With <keyword id="19899402" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital" source="keywords">digital</keyword> adoption fast gaining currency, <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> is likely to see <keyword id="19992513" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail" source="keywords">retail</keyword> <keyword id="19989657" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments" source="keywords">digital payments</keyword> double to USD 7 trillion by 2030 from current levels, a study by Kearney and <keyword id="19942875" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Pay" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Amazon Pay" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Amazon Pay">Amazon Pay</keyword> said. In the report 'How Urban India Pays', Kearney-Amazon Pay said strong adoption of digital payments in <keyword id="21056201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-purchases" source="keywords">online purchases</keyword> has potentially led to a permanent shift in consumer behaviours, fuelling offline adoption as well. While 90 per cent of the respondents of the survey preferred digital payments when making online purchases, affluent consumers lead the way with the highest Degree of Digital Payment Usage (DDPU), tending to use various modes of digital payment for 80 per cent of their transactions. "<keyword id="19955338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="millennials" source="keywords">Millennials</keyword> and Gen X are leading in the adoption of all types of digital payment instruments," it said. "Men and women both use digital payments in about 72 per cent of their transactions, indicating gender parity." The research was based on an online survey of over 6,000 consumers along with more than 1,000 merchants through offline and online methods across 120 cities with representation from various regions, income groups, city categories, age brackets and genders. India has seen a surge in <keyword id="19990771" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce" source="keywords">e-commerce</keyword>, with the market valued at USD 75 billion to USD 80 billion in 2022 and expected to grow at a 21 per cent CAGR until 2030. "In line with India's digital journey, retail digital payments have grown dramatically over the past five years - from USD 300 billion in FY18 to USD 3.6 trillion in FY24. By FY30, they are likely to double to USD 7 trillion," the report said. The Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPI" source="keywords">UPI</keyword>) has been a key driver of this growth, demonstrating a CAGR of 138 per cent in its volumes during FY18-24. Other instruments such as cards and digital wallets are also gaining in popularity, contributing 10 per cent of digital transaction value today. "With such dynamic developments, it is no wonder that India is a global frontrunner in the digital payment landscape, accounting for a stellar 46 per cent of the global digital transaction volumes in 2022," it said. Digital payments have penetrated small towns, with respondents in these areas highlighting that 65 per cent of their transactions are digital, while respondents in larger cities cited this ratio to be 75 per cent. "There is a strong correlation between a city's average DDPU and its retail potential, as measured by the Kearney India Retail Index, with the top six metros displaying both high DDPU and high retail potential," the report said. DDPU surpasses retail potential in some cities such as Lucknow, Patna, Bhopal, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Indore, Ahmedabad and Pune, which have a high DDPU nearly matching that of larger metropolitan cities despite having a lower retail potential than the top six metros. The report said co-branded credit cards are gaining momentum. "Emerging methods such as buy now, pay later (BNPL), wearable payments and voice assistant-based payments are also starting to make inroads." Digital modes of payment constitute around 69 per cent of the total transaction volumes for the Indian merchants that were surveyed. Even street vendors such as paan shops, fruit and flower sellers, food stalls, and kirana stores are joining the digital payment brigade. "Challenges for merchant adoption mirror consumer concerns, emphasizing issues of financial fraud, limited connectivity and trust," it said. The report said the next wave of growth in digital payments will be fueled by increasing penetration in segments with lower DDPU, such as consumers in lower-income groups and smaller towns, along with enhancing the value of spending via digital modes of payment in the higher DDPU segments by addressing their concerns. "All key stakeholders across the digital payments' ecosystem, including payment providers, the government, and value-added services players, will need to play a part in expanding digital payment adoption," it said. The focus areas should be empowering communities with financial education by launching target programmes to boost awareness of digital payments and new methods such as UPI Lite and UPI Lite X, especially for aspiring consumer segments, women in small towns, and street commerce merchants, to encourage higher adoption. Also, there is a need to create user-friendly consumer journeys by streamlining documentation and know-your-customer (<keyword id="19910870" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kyc" source="keywords">KYC</keyword>) processes, optimising user interfaces, and establishing responsive customer complaint resolution mechanisms, it said adding also there is a need to enhance digital infrastructure by addressing systems and network issues and exploring innovations such as UPI Lite X for areas with limited internet. Also, the risk of fraud has to be minimised and access to credit-based payment methods expanded by using alternate data for underwriting risk, developing innovative credit products and promoting credit education for financial health. "These areas can help India overcome challenges in the digital payment ecosystem by fostering a more inclusive, secure, and user-friendly environment, thereby enhancing the adoption of digital payments among consumers and merchants in India," it added.

India to see retail digital payments to double to USD 7 tn by 2030: Report

New Delhi, <keyword id="4742614" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-housing-and-urban-affairs">Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs</keyword> (MoHUA) has joined hands with <keyword id="830092" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> for home delivery of <keyword id="6361952" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Street-Food">street food</keyword> in six cities. As a part of Prime Minister <keyword id="456744" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="street-vendor">Street Vendor</keyword>'s AtmaNibhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) Scheme, the MoHUA entered into MoU with Zomato, to bring <keyword id="6770639" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="street-food-vendors">street food vendors</keyword> on its food-tech platform. In a statement MoHUA said that initially MoHUA and Zomato will run a pilot program by on-boarding 300 vendors across six cities namely - Bhopal, Ludhiana, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Vadodara. "The street vendors will be helped with PAN and fssai registration, training on technology/ partner app usage, menu digitization and pricing, hygiene and packaging best practices. Upon the successful completion of the pilot, MoHUA and Zomato plan to expand this initiative across the country in phases," it said. As per the MoHUA, this will give street food vendors online access to thousands of consumers and help these vendors grow their businesses. The MoHUA also launched the Mobile Application for PMSVANidhi se Samriddhi- Socio-economic profiling of PM SVANidhi beneficiaries and their families to link them to various Central government Schemes. "Covid-19 pandemic has restricted consumers from stepping out and forced them to follow physical distancing norms. In the given scenario it is important to connect Street Food Vendors with technology-enabled platforms to help them grow their business, thus helping them gain financially," said the ministry. In a first of its kind initiative, MoHUA entered into an MoU with Swiggy on October 5 last year and it is now joining hands with Zomato to empower street food vendors with digital technology. The MoHUA has coordinated with the key stakeholders including <keyword id="6414396" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="municipal-corporations">Municipal Corporations</keyword>, fssai, Zomato and GST officials to ensure that street food vendors are facilitated in completing the necessary prerequisites for this initiative. Zomato joins hands with the Indian government to deliver street food in Bhopal, Ludhiana, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, and Vadodara

A top health official of <keyword id="68884" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="telangana" source="Orion">Telangana</keyword> has blamed "<keyword id="6484016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pani-puri" source="Orion">pani puri</keyword>" for the large number of <keyword id="11950646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Typhoid" source="Orion">typhoid</keyword> cases being registered across the state. Director of <keyword id="14439087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-health-dr-g-srinivasa-rao" source="Orion">Public Health Dr G. Srinivasa Rao</keyword> on Tuesday said typhoid can be called 'pani puri' <keyword id="6361612" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Disease" source="Orion">disease</keyword>, and advised people to avoid it and other <keyword id="6361952" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Street-Food" source="Orion">street food</keyword> during the current rainy season to protect themselves from typhoid and other seasonal ailments. Referring to the habit of many people who gulp down several pieces of 'pani puri' at the roadside shops, he urged them not to ruin their health. "You may get pani puri for Rs 10-15 but tomorrow, you may end up spending Rs 5,000-10,000," he said. He said vendors should also pay special attention to hygiene and ensure use of safe drinking water. Rao pointed out that this year, more typhoid cases are being reported. During May, 2,700 cases were reported while this number stood at 2,752 during June. Contaminated food, water, and mosquitoes are identified as the main causes for seasonal diseases including malaria, acute diarrheal diseases (ADDs), and viral fevers, which have been reported in the past few weeks. This month alone, 6,000 diarrheal cases were registered across the state. Rao advised people to consume fresh food and boil their drinking water. He said since January, a total of 1,184 dengue cases have been reported in the state. Hyderabad alone accounted for 516 cases. Almost all the districts reported dengue cases. As many as 563 dengue cases were registered in June while in the first 10 days of this month, 222 cases were reported. The state is also reporting malaria cases. He said district medical and health officers have been directed to intensify anti-larval operations. He also urged people to observe every Friday as dry-day to eradicate mosquito menace. Rao also said though the number of Covid-19 cases has gone up during the last six weeks, people should not panic. He stated that Covid has entered an endemic stage, and the symptoms are common cold and fever. He also remarked that Covid has also become a seasonal disease. He said if anybody has Covid like symptoms, he should quarantine himself for five days. There is no need for Covid test if a person has no symptoms. The director of public health said only those Covid patients who have difficulty in breathing should be admitted to hospitals. He also cautioned private hospitals against doing platelet transfusions unnecessarily. Mumbai, May 15 () Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are home to the highest number of street vendors, collectively accounting for over one-fourth of the country's tally, economists at State Bank of India (SBI) said on Friday. According to a note released a day after the government announced a Rs 5,000-crore special credit facility for street vendors, ten states accounted for 35 lakh of the 50 lakh beneficiary street vendors who will be given a loan of Rs 10,000 each to restart businesses impacted by the lockdowns. Uttar Pradesh has 7.8 lakh vendors, while West Bengal follows with 5.5 lakh, it said, adding that the two states collectively command a 27 per cent share of the overall number. Bihar has 5.3 lakh vendors, Rajasthan 3.1 lakh, Maharashtra 2.9 lakh, Tamil Nadu 2.8 lakh, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka at 2.1 lakh each, Gujarat 2 lakh, Kerala and Assam at 1.9 lakh each, Odisha 1.7 lakh, Haryana 1.5 lakh, and Madhya Pradesh and Punjab at 1.4 lakh each. The economists said they depended on the self-employed in non-agriculture sector data from the periodic labour force surveys to arrive at the estimates. Welcoming the move of introducing the 'one-nation, one-ration card' concept, it said the government will have to build the necessary technological architecture in the 5.27 lakh fair price shops at the earliest to make it operational. The direct fiscal impact of the package announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday is only up to Rs 14,750 crore or 0.07 per cent of the GDP, as a bulk of the Rs 3.16 lakh crore of announcements is aspects like guarantees, it said. Till now, the cumulative fiscal impact of all the three packages announced by Sitharaman to mitigate the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is Rs 1.29 lakh crore or 0.6 per cent of the GDP. The economists marginally upped the country's fiscal deficit estimate for FY21 to 8 per cent of the GDP as against 7.9 per cent earlier. The slippage will largely be on account of lower revenues and higher expenditure as a result of the pandemic, the note said. With the schemes announced on Thursday also including a Rs 30,000 crore additional refinance support from Nabard for crop loans written by lenders, the economists said there is a likelihood of another Rs 30,000 crore in liquidity support being made available to the agri-focused institution from RBI over and above the earlier announcement of Rs 25,000 crore.
