Many experts emphasise that the pervasive influence of these accounts can negatively shape public perception and discussion, and is often used to target certain sensitive groups and stoke communal tension.<br /><br />As platforms struggle to keep pace with the evolving tactics of malicious bots, the need for stronger regulations becomes increasingly evident. Considering that AI is evolving at a rapid pace that makes it supremely difficult to tell bots apart from real human accounts — even for the tech-savvy — Brenner argues for US legislation that mandates platforms to identify human versus bot accounts. Similar measures are needed in India, where the lack of accountability for social media platforms allows harmful bot activity to proliferate.<br /><h2>What needs to be done?</h2>Addressing the bot problem requires a multitude of different solutions. For starters, enhanced technology, such as more sophisticated AI detection systems, could help platforms identify and mitigate bot activity more effectively. Speaking to Business Insider, Anglero said Norwegian people would likely ignore the rules.</p><p>Anglero said it's common for Oslo families to use social media, whether to coordinate children's sports teams or just to chat.</p><p>"This law stops the functioning of the average family and creates chaos for everyone," he said.</p><p>"Yes, children need to be protected, but better parenting is a better answer than banning technology," he said.</p><p>"The problem is not the tech but the culture. Norway's social system works but it still requires parents to be parents and raise their children, not the government."</p><p>Lina Ghazal, the head of regulatory affairs at Verifymy, an online safety provider, said that Norway would need to be smart about making a ban effective.</p><p>Ghazal told BI that the government would need to come up with strong controls so kids "can't easily bypass ineffective checking."</p><p>She suggested using email address age estimation and facial age estimation, two techniques that she said are "less disruptive" than requiring photos of IDs.</p><p>"If they get it right, it would create a powerful model for other countries looking to create safer, age-appropriate online environments," she said.</p><p>Other countries are considering similar ideas.</p><p>Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is working on a ban for children under 16, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/article/2024/sep/10/australia-children-social-media-ban-age-limit-under-16-details">The Guardian</a> reported.</p><p>France is taking a different approach, trialling a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/aug/27/france-to-trial-ban-on-mobile-phones-at-school-for-children-under-15">ban on mobile phones</a> at schools for children under 15.</p><p>Representatives for Støre and Toppe did not immediately respond to a request for comment.</p>

But a few years ago, a <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aap9559">study</a> confirmed that misinformation is spread mainly by real people compared to bots, with a 70% higher likelihood of false information getting 'retweeted' than truthful tweets. <br /><br />In 2022, after the billionaire <keyword id="19903807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Elon-Musk" source="keywords">Elon Musk</keyword> took over the social media giant, he got rid of a majority of Twitter's ‘content moderation’ teams across the world. Now, the platform takes a crowdsourcing approach to identifying misinformation through its feature called ‘community notes’.<br /><br />Building on our understanding on the spread of <keyword id="2635990" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="misinformation-on-social-media" source="Orion">misinformation on social media</keyword>, a team of analysts at Indiana University has now discovered that it takes only a few influencers to shift the beliefs and opinions of large audiences. These purveyors of misinformation can range from pundits with large followings to less reputable media sources, along with affiliated personal accounts and various influencers.<br /><br />To delve deeper into their social media influence, the research team focused on Twitter. They gathered data over 10 months, analysing 23,97,388 tweets from 4,48,103 users, and identified tweets flagged for low credibility.<br /><br />Their analysis revealed that about one-third of low-credibility tweets came from just 10 accounts, and approximately 70% were posted by 1,000 accounts.<br /><br />While most superspreader accounts were untraceable to individuals, some high-profile users, such as politicians and influencers, were identifiable.<br /><br />The researchers noted that many superspreader accounts were deactivated during Twitter's 2020 crackdown on disinformation. However, this trend is reversing, with X adopting a new approach under Elon Musk's ownership.<br /><br />Although this study primarily targets the US, its findings hold relevance for social media users around the world, including those in India. Paris had begun to suffer from a sudden rise in temperature and humidity, which had impaired the quality of sleep of many athletes. Goswami and other Indian Olympians had made reels celebrating the move.<br /><br />However, social media platforms were quickly flooded with negative comments from disgruntled observers. Most of these were directed at Goswami, questioning her commitment and dedication to her sport. The criticism has been harsh, with some even blaming her less-than-stellar performance at the <keyword id="20201477" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Paris-2024-Olympics" source="keywords">Paris 2024 Olympics</keyword> as an outcome of the decision to “make reels” instead of “focusing on the sport”.<br /><br />At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Priyanka Goswami finished 41st in the women's 20km race walk with a time of 1:39:55, significantly behind her personal best and national record of 1:28:45 set in 2021. This was her second Olympic appearance, having previously finished 17th at Tokyo 2020. In racewalking, athletes have to maintain a rapid pace while adhering to strict technique rules, making it one of the most challenging disciplines in athletics.<br /><br />Many also pointed out that Goswami had been training in Switzerland on “taxpayer’s money”. While this may certainly be true, considering how the athlete herself had posted reels of the same, barely anyone seemed to acknowledge the fact that this was part of Goswami’s training. Athletes often train at high altitudes to prepare for big events because the thinner air means there is less oxygen to deliver to their muscles. This forces their bodies to work harder, leading to more efficient workouts.<br /><h2>The struggles of race walking in India</h2>Race walking is certainly not an established sport in India, often overshadowed by more popular disciplines like cricket, badminton, and other athletics. This lack of recognition translates into limited resources and support for athletes who choose to pursue it. In addition, race walkers in India frequently face uncertainties regarding training facilities, funding, and opportunities to compete on international stages.<br /><br />Even in preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Indian race walkers had to reportedly overcome significant hurdles, including confusion over the selection process, a lack of inadequate training infrastructure and limited exposure to high-level competitions. Despite these challenges, athletes like Priyanka Goswami remained committed to their sport, striving to make a mark on the international stage despite the odds stacked against them.<br />        <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="112193514" title="Why have the Paris Olympics 2024 athletes been given over 2 lakh condoms?" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>However, the combination of these factors has led to India struggling to make a significant impact in Olympic race walking events so far.
