Study reveals 80% of software engineers must upskill by 2027 to keep their jobs

The report 'Assessing the Net Impact of e-Commerce on <keyword id="19898684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="employment" source="keywords">Employment</keyword> and Consumer Welfare in India' was launched by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. "Plugging in data from our survey, we estimate that online vendors generate 15.8 million jobs, including 3.5 million jobs for women," the report prepared by Pahle India Foundation (PIF), a Delhi-based policy research institute, said. E-commerce, according to the report, has been a key driver of employment generation In India. On an average, online vendors employ 54 per cent more people and almost twice the number of female employees, compared to offline vendors. The report noted that two of the most widely-recognised contributions of e-commerce penetration in the retail sector are --growth in employment and improvements in consumer welfare. It said rather than displacing physical markets, e-commerce is expanding into new territories like tier 3 cities. "Our data shows that a higher percentage of Tier 3 city consumers spend more than Rs 5,000 per month on online shopping as compared to consumers from bigger cities," it said, adding this is the India consumption story, which enables the co-existence of physical and digital retail. The study analysed the impact e-commerce has had on employment and consumer welfare through a pan-India survey of 2,062 online vendors, 2,031 offline vendors, and 8,209 consumers of products from e-commerce websites across 35 cities in 20 states and UTs. According to the report, each e-commerce vendor on an average employs about 9 people, of which 2 are female, while each offline vendor employs about 6 people, of which only 1 is female. It pointed out that there was increase in employment across skill levels, including high-skilled (management, marketing), medium-skilled (customer service, operations), and low-skilled (warehousing, logistics, delivery) functions. The report said that the growth of e-commerce and accompanying digitalisation have fundamentally changed the skill sets and roles required in the industry. "Vendors have experienced improved business performance parameters since listing online, including higher sales and profits," it said. According to the report, 60 per cent and 52 per cent of vendors, respectively, state that their sales and profits have increased since the time they have started selling online. "Overall, more than two thirds of the online vendors interviewed experienced an increase in online sales value and profits in the past year," the report said, adding that 58 per cent saw an increase in both. Barring costs, it said vendors have seen a positive shift in all other aspects of business performance since they started selling online. The report said there is a strong business case for offline vendors to list on e-commerce platforms or pursue an omni-channel strategy. "E-commerce integration has accrued significant benefits to vendors from smaller cities and micro-enterprises," it said. The study also delves into how e-commerce has reshaped consumer behaviour, noting that consumers have shifted to online shopping for reasons that include convenience, product variety, and access. "A highly engaged consumer base is indicated by the fact that more than 50 per cent of all respondents to the survey spent more than two hours on e-commerce platforms a week, and that 70 per cent made a purchase via e-commerce in the last month alone," it said. Speaking at the event, former NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar said, e-commerce has revolutionized India's retail landscape. Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation(MoSPI) secretary Saurabh Garg lauded the government's initiatives expanding digital public infrastructure that have enabled the smooth expansion of e-commerce. Online vendors generated 15.8 million jobs in India: e-commerce report

Domestic companies have been responsible for nearly 47 per cent of office leasing activity from 2022 to H1 2024, marking a departure from the traditional dominance of global corporations, particularly American firms. During 2022-2023, domestic firms experienced a 60 per cent surge in office space absorption compared to the pre-pandemic period of 2018-2019. Key occupier groups have secured significant spaces in prime locations across major cities, with <keyword id="19913115" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-ncr" source="keywords">Delhi-NCR</keyword> leading, followed by <keyword id="6354321" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="Orion">Bengaluru</keyword> and Mumbai. Domestic firms to lease 60-65 million sq ft office space by 2025: CBRE report

According to the report, entities in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> spent USD 1,703.8 million on AI in 2023. "<keyword id="20959016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-spending" source="keywords">AI spending</keyword> in India is expected to increase to USD 5 billion with CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 31.5 per cent between 2023 to 2027. By 2027 AI will be everywhere," Sharath Srinivasamurthy, Associate Vice President, <keyword id="19950614" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IDC" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="IDC" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="IDC">IDC</keyword> said. He said that in 2023, major spending of USD 209 million was driven by AI infrastructure provisioning and related software. It was followed by augmented customer service agents at USD 168.8 million, digital assistance USD 113.1 million, augmented threat intelligence USD 100.1 million and program advisors recommendation systems USD 97.1 million. "The infrastructure provisioning will continue to be the biggest contributor in overall spent," Srinivasamurthy said. Intel India Region Vice President and Managing Director, Santhosh Viswanathan said India is ready for AI as around 20 per cent of the world's data is produced in the country and it is the third biggest global market. Viswanathan said India leads globally in terms of technical skill availability. "Opportunities abound for those who invest in upskilling, with a notable shift in the way businesses operate, as over 85 per cent of Indian businesses plan to invest in AI within the next two years," he added. Moreover, the report mentioned there is a noticeable uptick in fresher demand within sectors such as Engineering, Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Retail. Skills pertaining to Data Engineering, Development (Java, Angular), ERPs, Power BI, Network Engineering, Cybersecurity, and UI/UX are particularly sought after among early career professionals. According to the report, the IT sector in India is experiencing a notable transformation as it expands beyond its initial technology hub, Bengaluru. Emerging tech hubs like Pune, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, and Delhi NCR are gaining prominence. This shift is driven by their flourishing tech industries and the presence of both domestic and international companies, propelling them to become established, mature technology hubs in India. City-wise trends for technology hiring demand in India are relatively concentrated, with the top five cities accounting for over 79 per cent of all job postings.

As per its evaluation, half of the candidates – at 50.3% were found to be employable as compared to the 46.2% last year. This report is a result of the evaluation of 3.75 lakh candidates or freshers who took the Wheebox National Employability Test (WNET) across India and the participation of 150 corporations from over 15 different industries in the Early Career Edition of the India Hiring Intent Survey. Piyush Nangru, co-founder and COO, Sunstone said the gap between skills that graduates have and industry-required skills continues to persist. “There is an urgent need across the country for multiple stakeholders to remedy the industry and higher education gap,” he said. Amongst the domains, B Com, MBA and B Pharm graduates are found to be most employable. Whereas, Polytechnic and MCA graduates were the least employable. “Improving employability through higher education remains a challenge and can be attributed to many factors.The post-Covid era further requires realignment of the higher education curriculum, up-skilling practices, and training techniques,” Nangru said. Among cities, Mumbai has the highest overall employment percentage of candidates, followed by Lucknow and Mangalore. Increased participation of women at work will give industries an edge with key roles already being occupied by women as we go into 2023,” the report said. Currently, the share of women in India’s workforce at 33% — is much less than that of males at 67%. Whereas, in countries like South America, Asia, and Africa, women account for 36% of the workforce. The report predicts that, in 2023, sectors like automotive, engineering and <keyword id="35619" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="internet-business" source="Orion">internet business</keyword> will see the most hiring. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Delhi are likely to have the most employable talent in 2023, as per its forecast. According to the <a href="https://unemploymentinindia.cmie.com/">Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy latest data</a>, the unemployment rate of India rose to 8% in November this year.
