Another source told the news aggregator that Singh, who serves as both Chairman and Managing Director, will likely sell around 10 percent of his shares, though the amount could increase if necessary. SpiceJet is currently in talks with investors, both in India and abroad, for a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP), with commitments already made for up to Rs 2,000 crore. These funds are expected to help the airline cover operational expenses and address its various liabilities. While no official statement has been made by SpiceJet, insiders expect the funding round to be wrapped up by the end of September. As of June 2024, Ajay Singh and the promoter group held just over 47% of the airline, according to data from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). SpiceJet, which once had a fleet of 74 aircraft in 2019, now operates only around 20 planes. In a recent investor presentation, the airline announced plans to raise Rs 3,200 crore through QIP, warrants, and capital infusion by Singh. This cash will be used to bring grounded planes back into service, settle liabilities, acquire new aircraft, and cover other general expenses. The airline aims to secure Rs 2,500 crore through QIP and an additional Rs 736 crore from previously issued warrants and funds infused by Singh, as detailed in the presentation. Social media was then rife with discussions about scalpers, and how they are hoarding tickets to sell them at higher prices. Now, BookMyShow has filed an FIR for black marketing of Coldplay's tickets. According to an ANI report, the company has taken legal action against unknown scalpers involved in the reselling of tickets for Coldplay's "<keyword id="23232180" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Music-Of-The-Spheres-World-Tour" source="keywords">Music Of The Spheres World Tour</keyword> " in India. The online ticket platform filed an FIR with the <keyword id="19906039" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Police" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Mumbai Police" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Mumbai Police">Mumbai Police</keyword> on October 2, accusing scalpers of black market activity surrounding tickets for the band's highly anticipated shows in January 2025 at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The FIR was registered at Vile Parle Police Station, with the Mumbai Police charging the accused under sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), as well as section 66(C) of the Information Technology Act. Investigations are currently underway to identify those involved in the unauthorised resale of concert tickets. The issue arose when BookMyShow, which opened ticket sales for the concert on September 22, received emails from two people who claimed to have secured tickets for others in exchange for money. Several WhatsApp messages were also sent to BookMyShow requesting additional tickets, which the platform ignored. BookMyShow had clearly warned buyers against purchasing tickets from third-party sources, yet scalping activities persisted. In response to these concerns, the ticketing company lodged a complaint with the police on September 23, well before the formal FIR was filed. BookMyShow's spokesperson said the company remains committed to combating ticket reselling and is cooperating with the authorities to investigate all instances of illegal sales, including those on social media platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp, as well as digital reselling platforms like Viagogo and Stubhub. BookMyShow's FIR filed with the Mumbai police also urges authorities to investigate the unauthorised resale of tickets by individuals and platforms. "We have provided details of all resellers that have come to our attention, including independent individuals reselling tickets for this tour across social media platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp and beyond, as also digital platforms such as Viagogo, Stubhub Holdings and more, to aid authorities in a thorough investigation," a statement from the company read. The platform is also reportedly considering cancelling tickets that have been sold through unauthorised channels and reiterated its strong opposition to illegal ticket resale. "Our stance remains clear and unchanged - BookMyShow vehemently condemns and opposes ticket reselling which is deemed illegal and is punishable by law in India. BookMyShow has no association with any such unauthorised ticket selling/reselling platforms and/or any third party individuals/platforms for the purpose of reselling Coldplay's Music Of The Spheres World Tour 2025 in India," a company spokesperson said as per ANI. BookMyShow had also posted a statement on Instagram last month, saying that scalping of tickets is punishable by law in India and that people should stay safe from scammers. "Scalping is strictly condemned and punishable by law in India. We have filed a complaint with the police authorities and will provide complete support to them in investigation of this matter. We urge you not to fall victim to these scams. Any tickets bought from unauthorised sources will be at risk of consumer and can turn out to be fake tickets. Beware of such scammers," the statement had read. Coldplay is set to perform three shows in Navi Mumbai on January 18, 19, and 20, 2025, as part of their world tour.

Well, that's a different, rather completely absent story. <h2>Que Sera Sera, much?</h2>A recent report by SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) that studied profits and losses made by traders in the equity derivatives segment between FY22-24 exposed the mad mania of futures and options trading in India, especially since the pandemic. Per the report, 91.1% of individual traders, or about 73 lakh traders had only lost money trading in futures and options in FY24. Between FY 22-24, over 1 crore traders, or about 92.8% of individual traders, had lost Rs 2 lakh each. But once bitten, twice shy? Well, not in this case. More than 75% of individuals, who had only made losses trading in F&amp;O in FY22 and FY23, continued to trade vigorously in FY24 as well, without any changes in the bottom line, which remained deep in red and negative. So, then all these traders must be uber-rich, with tons of cash and not much care to spare? Nope. 76% of traders in the F&amp;O space in FY24 had an annual income of less than Rs 5 lakh. 2 years ago, their share stood at 71%. And their choice of poison? Options! In FY24, 60% of traders made losses trading in futures, but a whopping 91.5% burnt their funds trading in options. Mind you, futures are riskier than options. With futures, which require significant capital investment, the buyer and seller both are contractually bound to adhere to the pre-determined strike price of the futures or options contract, irrespective of whether the prevailing prices are higher or lower (and thus, resulting in losses for either the buyer or seller). As of September 2024, India's STT mop-up had gone past Rs 26,000 crore. Traders have to pay STT whenever they buy or sell any security in the market. So, more trading brings in more STT, and hence, more revenue for the government, so they're not really complaining. After all, this is certainly what they'd call enviable growth. As of August 2023, our STT collection stood at about Rs 21,599 crores. And in FY20-21, India's STT collection had been Rs 16,000 crore. If only our salaries also managed to grow at this rate! <h2>So, what's happening?</h2>Two things. One, it's the big bulls who are raking in all the moolah. And it's the younger lot (those aged under 30) who are propping them up for this. In FY24, 43% of individual traders in the market were less than 30 years of age. In just one year, this number has swelled by 12 percentage points from just 31% of individual traders. But who says ageing is bad? Wrinkles and silver hair seemingly have a propensity of incurring lesser losses in the market. In FY24, only 79% of traders aged above 60 years made losses, as compared to 93% of those aged below 30. Small and mid-income traders, which make up 98% of the total trader base, witnessed average losses per person of Rs 65,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh in FY24 in futures and options, respectively. The winner here? Clearly, the big bulls, who declared an annual income of over Rs 1 crore, ended up with average profits of Rs 96,000 per person this year. <h2>What’s the sheriff up to?</h2>The government has finally swung into action, hiking the STT rate for F&amp;O during this year’s budget. Effective October 1, 2024, the STT on futures stands at 0.02%, up from 0.0125%. For options, it was upped to 0.1% versus 0.0625% previously. Small margins, but huge impact oncoming. Says Puneet Sharma- CEO and Fund Manager at Whitespace Alpha, “SEBI aims to enhance market stability while safeguarding investor interests, reflecting the regulator's intent to balance risk management with market participation”. But this might come with its own share of challenges, too. “Stricter norms around leverage, transparency, and capital adequacy could limit the ability of investors to determine their own risk appetite, thereby stifling innovation in trading strategies. Over-regulation in an environment that thrives on strategic flexibility and creativity could dampen the market’s dynamism, affecting India's competitiveness in the global derivatives landscape”, he observes. SEBI recently came out with a set of guidelines that aim to thwart <keyword id="19972907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-investors" source="keywords">retail investors</keyword>' participation in futures and options and hinder them from taking undue risks. Here's a quick recap of what's to come for the residents of the F&amp;O town Margin Requirements: To battle the high volatility and chaos which is generally seen on expiry days(i.e the last mandated date, post which an option becomes invalid), SEBI will put in place an extreme loss margin (ELM) of 2% for all open short options on the day of expiry. Translation? Traders will need to pony up more cash upfront, leaving them with fewer funds to take on risky bets. It ain't a choice: No more of one expiry every single day! Going ahead, an exchange like BSE or NSE will just be able to offer weekly expiries, that too, only on one benchmark index, as opposed to an entire buffet it currently offers. At present, NSE offers weekly options contracts for its financial index, bank and midcap indices. But say goodbye to this, and hello to derivatives on only 1 index per exchange. Raising the bar: Effective November 30, 2024, the minimum contract value for index derivatives will be upped to Rs 15 lakh, from the present Rs 5-10 lakh. The hope is that by making it ultra-expensive to enter these trades, investors will be dissuaded from taking on risky trades. Pay upfront: Starting February 2025, those trading in options will have to pay the entire options premium upfront, even before their trades are executed. This is because options generally carry very high leverage, and paying a significant sum upfront can force traders to think twice. Invigilation Pro Max: Starting April 1 2025, to make sure that the number of positions for equity index derivatives does not slyly slip over the mandated limit, especially on expiry days when trade volumes are huge, the exchanges will have to take a minimum of 4 position snapshots randomly. The question is, will these injections of sobriety be enough to calm down the steroid-fed bull of the futures and options market in India? Well, only time and market turnover will tell! People close to the matter told IANS that India-made iPhone 15 will be available on the first day of its global sale. The new iPhone 15 series was likely to go on sale in the days or weeks following the launch on Tuesday (US time). According to sources, a small set of 'Make in India' iPhone 15 units is set to be exported to other countries within a short span of time from its global launch. In August, Apple maker <keyword id="6354671" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foxconn" source="Orion">Foxconn</keyword> geared up the local production of the next-generation iPhone 15 at its Sriperumbudur facility near Tamil Nadu faster than ever, as the company doubled down on the 'Make in India' initiative. Sources close to the development had told IANS that Apple aims to deliver locally-assembled iPhone 15 as soon as it is launched globally in the middle of next month, in order to narrow the launch-to-availability gap and increase its exports from India to other nations. Last year, Apple started assembling the iPhone 14 at the Foxconn facility in India in September, a first in years when a new iPhone was assembled within weeks of its global launch in the country. The iPhone 15 is expected to be the most significant update to the device in three years. It will include camera system upgrades across the range, with the Pro models getting an improved 3-nanometer processor. iPhone 15 is also expected to feature USB-C type for the first time. Introducing a USB-C charging cable point in iPhone 15 is set to herald a new era for Apple. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Activist short-seller Hindenburg Research wiped out $153 billion in market value from Adani Group.</li><li>It recently disclosed that it made just $4 million for its efforts.</li></ul>Nate Anderson, the chief mind behind activist short-seller Hindenburg Research, has had an eventful past 18 months.In January 2023, he accused the Indian conglomerate owned by Gautam Adani — one of the world's richest people — of fraud, subsequently wiping out $153 billion in market value from its associated companies. This led Indian regulators to his doorstep and forced him into defensive mode. A war of words has persisted ever since.A year and a half later, the battle continues. And based on new information released by Hindenburg, one might wonder whether it was all worth it.The firm — which describes itself as specializing in "<a target="_blank" href="https://hindenburgresearch.com/about-us/">forensic financial research</a>" — recently disclosed that it's <a target="_blank" href="https://hindenburgresearch.com/adani-update-sebi/">made just $4 million</a> from its considerable efforts. Compared to the nine figures of market value it helped erase, and the $80 billion wiped from Adani's personal fortune, that's a drop in the bucket.Detailed below is the considerable back-and-forth that's taken place since Hindenburg's initial shot across the bow of Adani Group. The tale that follows highlights the lengths a global conglomerate — and the regulatory body with a vested interest in keeping it afloat — will go to defend itself. It also shows the resolute nature of Anderson as he continues fighting back.<h2 id="7df22065-9960-4dfb-a5ba-2a5dced6dda0">The initial report</h2>Hindenburg accused Indian business magnate Gautam Adani in 2023 of pulling off the "largest con in corporate history." It was the result of a two-year-long investigation, which found a number of financial and accounting irregularities in Adani's empire, the firm said in its <a target="_blank" href="https://hindenburgresearch.com/adani/">106-page report.</a>"Indian conglomerate Adani Group has engaged in a brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades," the report said. "We believe the Adani Group has been able to operate a large, flagrant fraud in broad daylight in large part because investors, journalists, citizens and even politicians have been afraid to speak out for fear of reprisal," it later added.Hindenburg identified at least 38 shell companies closely related to Adani Group, which it said appeared to engage in stock manipulation and money laundering. It cited "numerous examples"of those companies funneling money through private companies owned by Adani, before cash was set to Adani's listed public companies.The short-seller's investigation also found Adani's private and public companies to have "numerous" undisclosed transactions with other parties, the researchers found, which violates regulatory laws in India.The "labyrinthian network of shells appears to serve several functions, including shuffling losses into private entities to boost reported earnings, and surreptitiously moving money to prop up entities in the group," Hindenburg said.Adani Group was also affiliated with a number of funds that displayed "flagrant irregularities," the research firm said, such as being offshore entities, having concealed ownership information, and having portfolios being "almost exclusively" invested in Adani's firms.One such fund, Elara, controlled another fund that was around 99% concentrated in Adani shares. That suggested to the researchers it was "obvious Adani controls the shares," the report said.Hindenburg attached a list of 88 questions for Adani to answer, which included inquiries into the billionaire's close contacts, Adani Group executives, and investigations into the company by regulators."If Gautam Adani embraces transparency, as he claims, they should be easy questions to answer," the report said.<h2 id="87ef9631-a695-4bbc-86a3-c6c5152527e7">The response</h2>Nursing deep stock losses, Adani Group hit back with its own <a target="_blank" href="https://www.adani.com/-/media/Project/Adani/Invetsors/Adani-Response-to-Hindenburg-January-29-2023.pdf">413-page response</a>, calling Hindenburg's original report "nothing but a lie.""We are shocked and deeply disturbed to read the report published by the 'Madoffs of Manhattan,'" the reply said, referring to Hindenburg. "The document is a malicious combination of selective misinformation and concealed facts relating to baseless and discredited allegations to drive an ulterior motive," it added.The firm disclosed information on its accounting practices and professional relationships, while disputing many of the claims in the Hindenburg report.Transactions that were identified as suspicious by Hindenburg's team were in compliance with local laws and accounting standards, it said. Offshore companies and funds mentioned in Hindenburg's report were merely public shareholders in Adani-listed companies, the retort added."A listed entity does not have control over who buys/sells/owns the publicly traded shares or how much volume is traded, or the source of funds for such public shareholders nor it is required to have such information for its public shareholders under the laws of India. Hence we cannot comment on trading pattern or behavior of public shareholders," Adani's report said.The firm also criticized Hindenburg for its financial stake in releasing the report, calling the firm an "unethical short seller" and guilty of a "flagrant breach of applicable securities and foreign exchange laws.""This is rife with conflict of interest and intended only to create a false market in securities to enable Hindenburg, an admitted short seller, to book massive financial gain through wrongful means at the cost of countless investors," it said.Hindenburg issued a reply to Adani on the same day, denying any wrongdoing from its original report. They argued that Adani Group's reply failed to answer most of their questions. The conglomerate also didn't dispute the existence of certain "suspect" transactions, nor did it explain "their obvious irregularities," researchers added."We also believe that fraud is fraud, even when it's perpetrated by one of the wealthiest individuals in the world," Hindenburg Research said in its reply.Adani Group eventually <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/d0d318ce-b223-4026-8e7a-69bbd55d36f7">lawyered up</a> and readied for a fight, though the damage had already been done. In less than a week, Adani, known as the world's third richest man, saw his personal wealth plummet by $52 billion.<h2 id="5d579a08-65ec-42f4-bed2-9a0ffa2f2dd5">Conflict over Hindenburg's short-selling arrangement</h2>Indian regulators have raised specific questions about the structure of Hindenburg's short bet on Adani Group. The Securities and Exchange Board of India — the country's version of the SEC — sent a notice to Hindenberg in June 2024, raising questions about the nature of the report and the firm's relationship with Kingdon Capital Management, a New York hedge-fund involved in building a short position against Adani Group.Hindenburg's initial report was described to be "misleading" and have contained "inaccurate statements.""These misrepresentations built a convenient narrative through selective disclosures, reckless statements, and catchy headlines, in order to mislead readers of the report and cause panic in Adani Group stocks, thereby deflating prices to the maximum extent possible and profit from the same," the notice read.Regulators also revealed that Hindenburg had shared its research with Kingdon prior to publication. The two companies had a profit-sharing agreement, the notice says, with Hindenburg set to get 25% of Kingdon's profits for the short bet.Kingdon ended up making $22.3 million on the bet, $5.5 million of which is owed Hindenburg. $4.1 million of that had been paid as of the start of June, the document shows.Hindenburg shrugged off the letter as "nonsense," and an attempt to ward off whistleblowers who expose corruption among the country's most powerful people and companies."One might think that a securities regulator would be interested in meaningfully pursuing the parties that ran a secret offshore shell empire engaging in billions of dollars of undisclosed related party transactions through public companies while propping up its stocks through undisclosed share ownership via a network of sham investment entities," Hindenburg said in its reply.It added: "Instead, SEBI seems more interested in pursuing those who expose such practices."<h2 id="9e74ab2d-614e-4861-acce-77b6ae2aed56">A passion for 'finding scams'</h2>Backlash is nothing new to Anderson, who's <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/carl-icahn-hindenburg-research-short-seller-adani-group-nikola-block-2023-5">targeted other high-profile financiers</a> and began sniffing out wrongdoers on Wall Street long before he launched Hindenburg Research in 2017.This decade alone he's been instrumental in weeding out companies in the electric-vehicle industry. His work on Nikola led to fraud charges against its founder, and he also called out now-defunct Lordstown Motors for hyping up commercial interest in its product.More recently he <a target="_blank" href="https://hindenburgresearch.com/icahn/">took aim at activist investor Carl Icahn</a> and his famed operation, Icahn Enterprises."Find[ing] scams" has been a life-long passion, he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/16/business/short-seller-wall-street-scams-hindenburg.html">told the New York Times in a 2021 interview</a>, adding that he had spent hours off-the-clock looking into potential schemes, to the chagrin of some of his former bosses."I didn't plan it this way," he told the Times. "It was a side hobby that my employers were sometimes annoyed by."Fraud-finding is one of his top goals of 2024, he wrote in a <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/NateHindenburg/status/1609949199730348033">post</a> on X in January."My 2023 New Years professional resolution is to work with our @HindenburgRes team to expose some of the biggest frauds and financial charlatans in the world," Anderson wrote. "I am very confident we will achieve this goal."
