India's trade deficit widens to $19.73 billion in March, exports rose 6% in 2022-23 to $447 billion

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Vice Premier Sun Chunlan said China's pandemic is at a "new stage" that comes with new tasks.</li><li>Sun's words carry weight as she's the face of China's hardline Covid-zero approach.</li></ul><p>Hong Kong and Chinese stocks rallied Thursday after a top Chinese official — who oversees the country's pandemic management — appeared to tone down the country's hardline Covid-zero approach.</p><p>Vice Premier Sun Chunlan was speaking at a National Health Commission meeting on Wednesday, where she said China's pandemic is now at a "new stage" that comes with new tasks, according to an <a href="http://www.gov.cn/guowuyuan/2022-11/30/content_5729738.htm">official government statement.</a> </p><p>She said that's because the Omicron variant has become less able to cause disease, and as many more people have been vaccinated. China has also become more experienced in the prevention and control of COVID-19, she added. </p><p>That seems to hint at "some plans being underway for reopening next year," wrote Yeap Jun Rong, a market strategist at online trading platform IG on Thursday. </p><p>Sun's softening on China's draconian Covid-zero stance carries weight because she's seen as the face of the hardline approach. The shift is also significant because it followed <a href="https://www.insider.com/blank-paper-china-new-symbol-of-defiance-2022-11">rare public protests in China</a> last weekend against the country's relentless COVID-19 curbs after three years of the pandemic.</p><p>Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was 1.6% higher at midday, while the Hang Seng China Enterprises rose 1.25%. The Shanghai Composite was 0.65% higher.</p><p>As the world's second-largest economy after the US, China has been under pressure from pandemic restrictions that are into their third year. Economic activity contracted in November, as <a href="http://www.stats.gov.cn/tjsj/zxfb/202211/t20221130_1890710.html">official gauges</a> of China's manufacturing and service activities contracted from a month ago amid a record surge in Covid cases.</p><p>"Rising Covid cases, together with shrinking exports, added pressure on exporters," economists from <a href="https://think.ing.com/articles/asia-morning-bites-1-december-2022/">Dutch bank ING</a> wrote in a Thursday note. "Local government officials will likely exercise Covid measures with an intent to reduce their impact on the economy even if there are no further imminent changes in the overall Covid rules." </p><p>Apart from the optimism about a potential reopening of the Chinese economy, shares elsewhere in Asia were also propped up by <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-news-today-jerome-powell-inflation-interest-rate-hikes-2022-11">US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell,</a> who signaled on Wednesday the central bank is likely to slow its interest rate hike cycle as soon as December.</p><p>Japan's Nikkei 225 closed 0.9% higher, while South Korea's Kospi closed 0.3% higher. India's Sensex was last up 0.5% at 2.24 a.m. EST.</p>

<br />Trump last week hiked tariffs on China in a tit-for-tat response to similar move from Beijing. He also ordered American corporations to find alternatives to doing business in China, and threatened to declare a national emergency to enforce it before softening the threat Sunday. <br /><br />All of these comments battered Asian markets-- the Chinese currency Yuan hit a 11-year low--  until the Monday mood swing that caught traders by surprise. By then, many Asian exchanges had shut for the day but India was still open. <br /><br /><strong>Indian investors also had a government stimulus to factor in<br /></strong><br />Banking stocks led the rally after the Indian government revealed its plan to provide additional money to improve credit on Friday (August 23), aside from a slew of other measures  to revive a sluggish economy. However, the market looked much less than excited. <p>This might seem a little surprising: the US has just announced the official end to tapering, meaning no more new flows of QE. India's stock market was one of the emerging markets <a href="http://www.livemint.com/Money/v626Pr3DtqxnSDfUGQgZmI/Sensex-loses-more-than-170-points-in-opening-trade.html">hit hardest by the mere suggestion of tapering</a> in the first place.</p>
<p>But now, Indian equities seem to be going from strength to strength. At least part of the reason why is down to Prime Minister Narendra Modi:</p>

Recently, announcements on diesel price deregulation and the continued success of the BJP (Modi's party) have cheered markets.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Of course, there's a big downside to this. If Modi starts to disappoint, the expectations investors had for significant earnings growth are going to sour quickly. Once you're up on a pedestal, there's much further to fall.</span></p>

Modi Madness Catapults India Stocks To Record Highs 

Pakistani opposition leader <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword> has given a call for a shut down in <keyword id="3002" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Islamabad">Islamabad</keyword> next week and the news has already wiped off $3.5 billion from the Pakistan’s stock market.<br />

"Since hitting its record high on October 20, 2016, the benchmark-100 index has retreated 1,558.64 points, down 3.75% during the course of five trading sessions that wiped off over Rs 353.65 billion," The Express Tribune newspaper wrote.<br />
<br /> Imran has earlier successfully led shut down protests in the latter half of 2014. The selloff in the stock market halted the 26.6% gain seen in the KSE-100 index - akin to India's Sensex - in fewer than 10 months. And the push to sell has only increased since <keyword id="2346210" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan-Awami-Tehreek">Pakistan Awami Tehreek</keyword> chairman <keyword id="3791272" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="allama-tahir-ul-qadri">Allama Tahir ul Qadri</keyword> said he will join PTI's protest.<br />
<br /> "Increasing political uncertainty, as (the) date of PTI protests in Islamabad approaches, remains the main reason of nervousness among investors. The situation is exacerbated with religious parties joining the protest," said <keyword id="3791676" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="muhammad-shamoon-tariq">Muhammad Shamoon Tariq</keyword>, a partner at the Sweden-based Tundra Fonder, which has assets under management in Pakistan worth $150 million, to The Express Tribune.<br />

Tariq feels that there are few other important developments on the political front that are scaring the investors.<br />
<br /> "Markets are always scared of uncertainty and in the current protest call of PTI, no one is very sure of the outcome. The timing of these protests is also significant as the new <keyword id="15350" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Army">Army</keyword> chief's appointment is still pending," Tariq told the Pakistani newspaper, referring to the upcoming end of tenure of General <keyword id="1953535" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raheel-Sharif">Raheel Sharif</keyword>.<br />

"Political noise always has a greater impact on equities than any other news flow. The locking down of the capital where all the government machinery, foreign diplomats and foreign institutions reside is certainly the most important factor in the investors' minds right now," he further added.<br />

Imran Khan’s protest plans wipes off $3.5 billion from Pakistan’s Stock Market

<p>Global markets are selling off.</p>
<p>But nowhere is it worse than <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>.</p>

It's a pause of the post-Trump-win rally; the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at an all-time high Thursday.</li><li>Crude oil is lower after OPEC reported an increase in oil production in October.</li><li>Federal Reserve vice chair Stanley Fischer speaks at 9 a.m. ET, while the University of Michigan's preliminary consumer-sentiment survey for November will cross at 10.</li></ul><p>Here's Lutz: </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Good Morning, Futures are under some pressure early, led by another drop in Big Tech despite NVDA #s, with 1%+ losses in AAPL, FB, and AMZN. Currently, the peso is down 0.2% at 18.6289 per dollar. </span></p><p><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/japanese-yen-and-2016-election-donald-trump-hillary-clinton-2016-11">The Mexican peso isn't the only currency that's being impacted by Trump</a>.</strong> <span>"Since October, USD/JPY and share prices have risen when polls suggest a Clinton win is more likely and fallen when support for Trump rebounds," Taisuke Tanaka, a strategist at Deutsche Bank, wrote in a note to clients. Currently, <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/USD-JPY">the yen is weaker by 0.2%</a> at 104.71 per dollar.</span></p><p><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/chinas-trade-performance-remained-subdued-in-october-2016-11">China's trade surplus grew less than expected</a>. </strong>Exports fell 3.2% year-over-year while imports dipped 1.4%, making for a trade surplus of 325 billion yuan ($49.06 billion). The lira has recouped some of its losses and is weaker by 0.2% at 3.1725 per dollar.</p><p><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/priceline-earnings-q3-2016-2016-11">Priceline beats</a>. </strong>The travel booking site earned an adjusted $31.18 per share as revenue jumped 19% to $3.69 billion. Shares are <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/PCLN-Quote">up more than 5%</a> ahead of the opening bell.</p><p><strong>Stock markets around the world trade mixed. </strong>India's Sensex (+0.7%) led the way in Asia and Britain's FTSE (+0.1%) clings to gains in Europe. The S&amp;P 500 is looking to open lower by about 0.3% near 2,126.</p><p><strong>Earnings reports continue to flow. </strong>CVS Heath, DR Horton, SeaWorld Entertainment, and Valeant Pharmaceuticals are among the names reporting ahead of the opening bell.</p><p><strong>US economic data is light. </strong>JOLTs Job Openings will cross the wires at 8 a.m. ET. The US 10-year yield is down 1 basis point at 1.82%.</p>

10 things you need to know before the opening bell

<p>A recent Citi survey found hedge fund profits down for the year about $10 billion dollars <span class="st">-</span> or 30 percent <span class="st">-</span> from the year prior, and indexes from research firms eVestment and Preqin put hedge fund returns up around 3 percent <span class="st"><span class="st">-</span></span> just a fraction of the S&amp;P 500's 13.7 percent return.</p>
<p>But there were of course some winners.</p>
<p>Here are some common traits that last year's top performing funds shared, courtesy of <a href="https://www.preqin.com/">Preqin</a>'s 2015 Global Hedge Fund Report:</p>
<h3>Their core strategies were probably equity strategies.</h3>
<p>Of the top 20 performers, 75 percent used equity strategies. Of the top 10, equity strategy funds had a higher median return (59 percent) than any other type.</p>

<p>Last year's No. 1 performer was Arcstone Capital's Passage to India Opportunity Fund, a long-bias, value-oriented fund that saw a 225 percent net return.</p>
<p>Two other top performers were Alchemy India Long-Term Fund (up 60 percent) and ArthVeda Alpha India L50 (up 39 percent).</p>
<p>Though this may have seemed like an obscure bet at the beginning of 2014, India's Sensex, the benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange, actually <a href="http://www.nasdaq.com/article/sensex-rises-for-fourth-day-20141231-00045">rose</a> about 30 percent throughout the year.</p>

US Futures higher, led by Russell as more hawkish re-positioning occurs in Treasuries (ADP Employment and Yellen all before the Open). Nasdaq is lagging (#s, EU Regulatory headlines, Higher Rates = Lower buybacks). Keep an eye on Biotech, "risk off" has weighed heavily here - but M&amp;A this morning as ALXN pays a double for GEVA ($8.4B). The FTSE is unchanged as UK Election concerns sideline buyers, while the DAX is up 1% led by Financials as Greece makes latest IMF payment (Athens off small). Over in Asia, China's service sector activity comes in at its best level of the year, but Shanghai sold off another 1.2% on margin clampdown fears. India's Sensex the worst hit in 4 months, led by Banks and Outsourcers - while Aussie banks got smoked, hitting the ASX for 2.3%. Japan was still closed for Holiday ...</p><p style="padding-left: 60px;">The 10YY is just above 2.2%, but the curve steepening sharply again as the street positions for a blowout NFP print Friday. Bund Yields up another 7bp on the day (wow) as inflation metrics continue to rise globally (Oil). The DXY is under water tho, as the $ loses ground to Yen after failing 120 in the overnight. Euro has slight legs above 1.12. Despite the tailwind for commodities, Metals have all reversed lower, led by 70bp+ drops in Copper and Silver. Oil is up 2%+ however, as API showed a draw in inventories, and Saudi raises selling prices (y'day). At 8:30 this AM, we get the ADP Employment Print, just before Fed's Yellen, IMF's Lagarde Speak on a Panel in Washington at 9:15. US Futures are mixed, with NDX up 20bp but Russell lagging a bit. Keep an eye on the US Transports today - have been breaking down under the 200dma, but TNTE/FDX and GM headlines will have the space active today. European markets are playing catch-up after their 4day Holiday, with EuroStoxx up 1.3% led by a sharp rebound in Energy and Utilities - While the DAX has added 1% on materials and tech in slightly heavy trading - Consumer Discretionary only space I see in the red. Greek stress continues abating - Greek Yields are tighter and Athens' banks are bouncing as it seems they make the IMF payment. Over in Asia, India's Sensex lost ground after the central bank kept interest rates at 7.5% and Aussie's currency is surging after the central bank surprised traders by leaving borrowing costs unchanged. Shanghai Composite rose 2.5% to its best level since March 2008 as doves soar on stimulus hopes - while Japan gained 1.2% as the Yen dropped sharply.</span></p><p style="padding-left: 60px;">The US 10YY remains higher and remains just below NFP levels, while a sharp bid for Bunds reversed on better EU PPI data. The DXY is higher, making gains against Euro (under 1.09) and Yen (Tested 120 overnight) - causing a headwind for commodities. Gold is retreating from 7week highs, while Silver is getting hit for 1.5%. Despite the Aussie hold - Copper is jumping 70bp - the red metal lost its bid throughout y'days trade. The Oil complex is giving back some of yesterday's gains, with WTI off 1% into tonight's API Inventory data - Supplies probably rose by 3 million barrels - Genscape forecasting a very small 169K build in Cushing. Scheduled Catalysts are very light today - Fed's Kocherlakota speaks in Bismarck, N.D. at 8:50 this AM - at 10 we get JOLTS Job Openings; at 12 we get the DOE's Short Term Energy Outlook. There is a $24B 3Y auction at 1, and we get Consumer Credit at 3. Tonight after the bell, API data for Crude, Gasoline and Distillates</p>

<p style="padding-left: 60px;">Good Morning! US futures are starting stronger, led by a 70bp pop in Nasdaq. This mirrors sharp strength overseas, which has seen the DAX pop 1% in the last 2 days and EU stoxx eyeballing 6Y highs. Europe has outperformed USA by nearly 7% in 2015 as we await ECB QE this week. Greece is a lone standout in the red ahead of Sunday's elections - The latest poll last night showed anti-bailout Syriza stretching its lead to 6.5 percentage points. Over in Asia, Shanghai bounced back from yesterday's margin-headlines 8% slaughter, adding 1.9% as headlines show China's economy grew at its slowest pace in 24 years. India's Sensex hit all-time highs despite IMF cutting forecasts for global growth, while Korea's KOSPI added 80bp on chatter Sammy to split. Aussie was under pressure, as the Energy companies were under sharp pressure.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">The US 10YY is slightly lower but resting over 1.8%, and the Yield Curve is flattening, a slight headwind to Financials this AM (coupled with MS #s). German Yields are slightly higher as German ZEW rose more than expected. The USD is breaking to new highs, gaining against Euro and sharply against Yen, the latter nearing Y119. Despite this headwind, Gold is ripping towards $1300 ahead of ECB QE. The Oil complex was under decent pressure yesterday, and this morning finds Bren near unchanged, but WTI is under pressure into Expiry of contracts today, losing 2%. Copper is under pressure again on China numbers. On earnings, we have BHI, HAL and DAL on falling Oil price impact this AM. Tech rules tonight with IBM, CA, AMD and NFLX. Very light catalysts scheduled today otherwise - at 10am we get the NAHB Housing Market Index, and at 2:30 WTI contracts expire at the close of floor trading. Tonight Obama delivers State of the Union address at 9, and the BoJ decision is announced.</p>
