The tariffs could also encourage US businesses to source more chips domestically and help persuade chipmaking giants, like the Taiwan-based <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tsmc-making-apple-iphone-chips-helps-us-semiconductor-bet-2024-10">TSMC</a>, to keep building factories in the US. He added that US chipmakers could likely benefit from these tariffs because it could help them compete with companies abroad that sell chips at lower prices.The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment.<h2 id="dc733634-a51d-47cf-a7b9-405bdfac9e61">Tariffs on chips could boost construction and manufacturing jobs</h2>Patrick Moorhead, founder, CEO, and chief analyst at the research and advisory firm Moor Insights and Strategy, told BI that tariffs could increase the number of US chip manufacturing jobs. He added that he thinks the policy could incentivize chipmakers like TSMC and Samsung, which is based in South Korea, to boost manufacturing in the US."The cost of manufacturing in the US for Samsung and TSMC would be lower than a 30% to 40% tariff on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quartz-mine-computer-chips-hurricane-helene-spruce-pine-semiconductor-2024-9">wafers</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-ai-chip-production-manufacturing-nvidia-labor-china-taiwan-korea-2024-4">packaging</a>," he said, referring to key components of the chipmaking process.Jeff Ferry, chief economist at the Coalition for a Prosperous America, a nonprofit that advocates for increasing domestic manufacturing, estimated that tariffs could create roughly 100,000 jobs at US chip manufacturers and their suppliers.He said this estimate was partly based on a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.semiconductors.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/2021-Jobs-Report_2-pager.pdf">report</a> published in 2021 by the Semiconductor Industry Association — a trade association and lobbying group — that said a $50 billion investment would help create an estimated 10 additional chip factories in the US. Trump's trade restrictions could be good for American semiconductor jobs

Assuring the business leaders of India's deep commitment to the protection of intellectual property and to fostering tech innovation, Modi highlighted the economic transformation happening in the country, particularly in electronics and information technology manufacturing and semiconductors. "The Indian market is very important to Samsung. We have operated the manufacturing facility since 1996, and we also have R&amp;D centres in India. Noida and Bengaluru R&amp;D centres have become one of the biggest R&amp;D centres of Samsung and MX business. "They are busy developing flagship products as well as contributing to the development of <keyword id="22430809" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Galaxy-AI-technologies" source="keywords">Galaxy AI technologies</keyword>," Roh said, adding that these collaborations and efforts will continue in the future. In January this year, Roh termed India as one of Samsung's important manufacturing bases and said that the Korean electronics major will start manufacturing laptops this year at its Noida facility. "We are also working closely with component partners in the Indian market to strengthen infrastructure and supply chain. We have done so, and we will continue to do so going forward," Roh said. At Samsung Unpacked 2024, the tech giant expanded its wearables portfolio with the launch of Galaxy Ring, a health and wellness wearable device powered by Galaxy AI. It also unveiled its sixth generation foldable smartphones Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, along with Galaxy Buds3 and Galaxy Buds3 Pro. Both Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 are manufactured at the Noida facility. "The Indian market is one of the markets where the foldable range is growing exponentially, and at the centre lies Galaxy foldables. "Particularly, making health AI possible on our new products like watches and foldables, the contribution and efforts of Indian R&amp;D centres were immense," Roh said. He further said that the company expects the market demand to grow this year and has high expectations around Indian customers and consumers adopting the new foldable range with the incorporation of optimised Galaxy AI. "We will come closer to the consumers through diverse initiatives like first-hand experience programmes, game-related promotional activities, and Olympic sponsorship-related activities as well," he said. On the monetisation of AI services, Roh said mobile AI technologies and their usage patterns are progressing at such a speed that it would be too premature to comment on how it could be monetised. Samsung in talks with component partners to boost ops in India: TM Roh

As per the agreement, PSMC will provide design and construction support to build India's first AI-enabled greenfield fab in Gujarat, license a broad portfolio of technologies and provide engineering support to the fab unit. "We are pleased to partner with PSMC, whose technology and expertise will significantly accelerate our roadmap to pioneer semiconductor manufacturing in India. It will position us to play a key role in the growing semiconductor market to serve global customers," Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said. The company is setting up a chip manufacturing unit in Dholera at an investment of up to Rs 91,000 crore ( about USD 11 billion). Tata Electronics, PSMC conclude pact for ₹91,000 crore Dholera chip manufacturing unit

IT services major Tata Consultancy Services has entered into a partnership with the <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword>n Institute of Technology-Bombay, to develop what it said is India's first <keyword id="21836125" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="quantum-diamond-microchip-imager" source="keywords">quantum diamond microchip imager</keyword>. According to a statement from the IT services major on Tuesday, this to-be-developed sensing tool will hold the potential to unlock new levels of precision in the examination of <keyword id="20649044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="semiconductor-chips" source="keywords">semiconductor chips</keyword>, reduce chip failures and improve the energy efficiency of electronic devices. Over the next two years, experts from <keyword id="19950203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="TCS" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="TCS" meta.hostid="268" meta.entityid="TCS">TCS</keyword> will work with Dr Kasturi Saha, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering of IIT-Bombay to develop the tool. Semiconductor chips are an essential component of all modern electronic devices. These chips act as the brain of devices across industries such as communications, computing, healthcare, military systems, transportation, clean energy, and what not. Professor Saha said, "By working together, we aim to transform various sectors, including electronics and healthcare, and propel India forward through ground-breaking technologies and products aligned with National Quantum Mission's Quantum Sensing and Metrology vertical." Dr Harrick Vin, Chief Technology Officer, TCS, noted that the Second Quantum Revolution is progressing at an unprecedented speed, making it imperative to pool resources and expertise to build cutting-edge capabilities in sensing, computing, and communication technologies. "We firmly believe this initiative will have a transformative impact on various industries and society, with applications ranging from electronics to healthcare, and beyond. By working together, we can drive innovation and create a brighter future for all," said the CTO. National Quantum Mission, an initiative of the central government, aims to position the nation as a global quantum technology leader. As semiconductors continue to shrink in size, traditional sensing methods lack the precision and capabilities to detect anomalies in the chips, TCS asserted. The to-be-developed Quantum Diamond Microchip Imager can image magnetic fields, enabling a non-invasive and non-destructive mapping of semiconductor chips, much like an MRI at a hospital. It uses the defects in a diamond's structure, known as Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers, together with the other hardware and software for detecting and characterizing anomalies in semiconductor chips. The semiconductor industry in India is still in a nascent stage, with various local and multinational companies intending to tap its vast potential. Union Minister for Communications and Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, earlier this year said, that by the end of 2024, India would witness the launch of the first indigenous semiconductor chip. Currently, four semiconductor units -- three in Gujarat and one in Assam -- are in under construction stage. TCS ties up with IIT Bombay to develop India's first sensing tool for semiconductor chip imaging

The <keyword id="20143656" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="turnover" source="keywords">turnover</keyword> of India's automotive component industry registered a <keyword id="19910261" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="growth" source="keywords">growth</keyword> of 9.8 per cent in the financial year 2023-24, according to the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (<keyword id="20475655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ACMA" source="keywords">ACMA</keyword>). The turnover stood at Rs 6.14 lakh crore (USD 74.1 billion) during the year, said the ACMA, the body representing India's auto component manufacturing industry, in its review for the fiscal year 2023-24, as per a release. <keyword id="20373789" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shradha-suri-marwah" source="keywords">Shradha Suri Marwah</keyword>, President, ACMA, and CMD, Subros, said that apart from an increase in <keyword id="21825714" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vehicle-production" source="keywords">vehicle production</keyword>, higher value addition from the component sector has led to growth in the auto components sector. "On the front of trade, whilst overall merchandise <keyword id="19916774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports" source="keywords">exports</keyword> from India witnessed degrowth in FY24, auto component exports have grown despite geopolitical challenges and an increase in logistics costs," Marwah said. Elaborating on the mood of the industry and outlook for the near future, Marwah mentioned, steady growth in the vehicle industry has resulted in the industry reaching pre-pandemic levels of performance in 2023-24 in most segments, however, the first quarter of FY25 witnessed somewhat slower offtake in <keyword id="20051501" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vehicle-sales" source="keywords">vehicle sales</keyword>, especially in passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, given the high base, due to inclement weather conditions and elections. "With strong macro-economic indicators, conducive government policies, and over 7 per cent growth projected for the Indian GDP, we are hopeful that the auto components industry will continue to perform well in 2024-25," Marwah added in the release. Following are some of the key findings of the ACMA Annual Industry Performance Review: Auto component sales to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in the domestic market were at Rs 5.18 lakh crore (USD 62.4 billion), growing 8.9 per cent compared to the previous year. Consumption of increased value-added components, a thrust on localisation, and a shift in market preference towards larger and more powerful vehicles contributed to the increased turnover of the auto-components sector. Exports of auto components witnessed growth of 5.5 per cent to Rs USD 21.2 billion in 2023-24 in contrast to USD 20.1 billion in 2022-23. North America accounted for 32 per cent of exports. Europe accounted for another 33 per cent and Asia for 24 per cent, respectively. Exports to Europe grew by 12 per cent while to Asia remained flat. The key export items included drive transmission and steering, engine components, body and chassis, suspension and braking systems. Component imports grew by 3.0 per cent in 2023-24 to USD 20.9 billion from USD 20.3 billion in 2022-23. Further, increased vehicle movement and a surge in demand for used vehicles led to buoyancy in the aftermarket across all segments. The turnover of the aftermarket in 2023-24 stood at Rs 93,886 crore (USD 11.3 billion) compared to Rs 85,333 crore (USD 10.6 billion) in the previous year. The aftermarket, with an increase in e-commerce, is witnessing enhanced penetration, especially in the hinterland, and a gradual evolution into the organised sector. (ANI)
