When it comes to Sustainable Development Goals, India ranks quite low in the index. Out of 149 countries, India ranked at 110th spot as per a new index. 
 
Sweden topped the Sustainable Development Goals. 
 
The index was launched by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Bertelsmann Stiftung. 
 
The index collected available data for 149 countries to assess where each country stands in 2016 with regard to achieving the SDGs. 
 
It ranks countries based on their performance across the 17 global goals, a set of ambitious objectives across the three dimensions of sustainable development - economic development, social inclusion and environmental sustainability, underpinned by good governance. 
 
The index helps countries identify priorities for early actions and shows that every country faces major challenges in achieving the SDGs. 
 
"The Sustainable Development Goals are stretch goals, but they are within reach if countries work towards them with clarity and determination. The SDG Index and Dashboard can help each country to chart out a practical path for achieving the Goals," said SDSN Director Jeffrey Sachs. 
 
The countries which are closest to fulfilling the goals are not the biggest economies but comparably small, developed countries. 
Sweden tops the chart and is followed by Denmark and Norway on the top three performing countries. 
 
Germany (6) and the UK(10) are the only G7 countries to be found among the top ten performers. The US ranks 25th on the index, while Russia and China rank 47th and 76th respectively. 
 
India ranks 110th on the list followed by Lesotho on 113th position, Pakistan (115), Myanmar (117), Bangladesh (118) and Afghanistan (139). Poor and <keyword id="54124" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="developing-countries">developing countries</keyword> understandably score lowest on the SDG Index as they often have comparably little resources at their disposal. 
The Central African Republic and Liberia are at the bottom of the Index and still have the longest way to go in achieving the SDGs. 
 
A year after world leaders adopted the SDGs, the new index shows that all countries face major challenges in achieving these ambitious goals by 2030. 
 
No country has achieved the SDGs and even top Sweden scores "red" on several goals. 
 
The report shows how leaders can deliver on their promise and urges countries not to lose the momentum for important reforms. 
In order to achieve the ambitious goals, immediate and comprehensive action is needed in the crucial first years of implementation of the new global agenda, it noted. 
 
The report highlights major challenges per region: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries struggle to meet the goals on inequality, sustainable consumption, climate change and ecosystems, while many developing countries face major difficulties in providing basic social services and infrastructure access to their populations. 
 
East and South Asia outperform many other developing regions but unmet challenges persist in health and education. 
 
For Latin America and the Caribbean, high levels of inequality are among the most pressing issues. 
 
In spite of significant progress in recent years in Sub-Saharan Africa, the world's poorest region faces major challenges across almost all SDGs, with extreme poverty, hunger and health as major areas where substantial improvement is needed.

Out of 149 nations, India is at 110th spot on Sustainable Development Goals index

<keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s rank on the <keyword id="20020435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Economic-Forum" source="keywords">World Economic Forum</keyword>'s <keyword id="21747126" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Travel-Tourism-Development-Index-2024" source="Orion">Travel &amp; Tourism Development Index 2024</keyword> has risen to 39th place, with global tourism activities returning to pre-pandemic levels, the annual report showed on Tuesday. While the US topped the list, India is ranked highest in South Asia and among the lower-middle-income economies, the <keyword id="102110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WEF" source="Orion">WEF</keyword> said. India was ranked 54th in the previously published index in 2021, though changes made to the index parameters limit its comparability to earlier years. After the US, Spain, Japan, France and Australia figure among the top five in the 2024 list. The index, prepared in collaboration with the University of Surrey, showed India is highly price-competitive (18th) and boasts competitive Air Transport (26th) and Ground and Port (25th) infrastructure. In particular, India's strong Natural (6th), Cultural (9th) and Non-Leisure (9th) Resources help drive travel, and the country is only one of three to score in the top 10 for all the resource pillars, the WEF said. Moreover, despite a decline compared to 2019, the country still scores well for <keyword id="2173225" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="travel-and-tourism" source="Orion">travel and tourism</keyword> demand sustainability, especially thanks to more sustainable long stays among inbound visitors. It further said that as with many economies, travel and tourism enabling conditions in India have been impacted by global inflationary supply-side trends for the sector, with price competitiveness declining, while air transport and tourist services infrastructure are yet to recover to the 2019 level. As a result, the country's overall TTDI (Travel and Tourism Development Index) score is 2.1 per cent below its 2019 level. High-income economies in Europe and Asia-Pacific continued to lead the index. "International tourist arrivals and the travel and tourism sector's contribution to global GDP are expected to return to pre-pandemic levels this year, driven by the lifting of COVID-19-related travel restrictions and strong pent-up demand," the WEF said. The Middle East had the highest recovery rates in international tourist arrivals (20 per cent above the 2019 level), while Europe, Africa and the Americas all showed a strong recovery of around 90 per cent in 2023. The biennial index analysed the travel and tourism sectors of 119 countries around a range of factors and policies. Germany was ranked 6th, followed by the UK, China, Italy and Switzerland in the top ten. The results highlighted that high-income economies generally continue to have more favourable conditions for travel and tourism development. This was helped by conducive business environments, dynamic labour markets, open travel policies, strong transport and tourism infrastructure, and well-developed natural, cultural and non-leisure attractions.

India rises to rank 39th on WEF's Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024, becomes highest ranked South Asian nation

India has been ranked 133th in a new Global Youth Development Index that was put together by the <keyword id="81874" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commonwealth-Secretariat">Commonwealth Secretariat</keyword> on the Nation’s condition for youth when it comes down to employment, education, health, civic and political spheres. 
 India has ranked poorly, coming 133rd in the index that included 183 countries. India was placed below the neighboring countries like <keyword id="12266" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nepal">Nepal</keyword> (77), Bhutan (69) and <keyword id="6355572" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka">Sri Lanka</keyword> (31) and trailing behind the South Asian average. 
 
According to a report released last week that showed that India has seen an 11% improvement in score over the last five years and this highlighted the requirement for greater investment and hard-work to reap the the so-called demographic dividend. 
 
"While India's overall rank is relatively low, it has registered an impressive improvement of nearly 11 per cent in its youth development scores in the period between 2010 and 2015. The research for this report also shows that youth development levels in India lag particularly in the domains of health, education and employment. Improvements in these sectors will give India a much better chance of reaping a handsome demographic dividend," Abhik Sen, the lead author of the '2016 Global Youth Development Index' report told ET. 
 
The report highlighted the areas in which improvement is needed and they included education, employment opportunity and health and wellbeing. 
 The top 10 countries on the index are largely from <keyword id="3791301" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="europe-germany">Europe - Germany</keyword> (1), <keyword id="49968" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Denmark">Denmark</keyword> (2), <keyword id="103" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Switzerland">Switzerland</keyword> (4), <keyword id="6361754" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Kingdom">United Kingdom</keyword> (5), <keyword id="44173" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netherlands">Netherlands</keyword> (6), <keyword id="21177" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Austria">Austria</keyword> (7), <keyword id="63763" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Luxembourg">Luxembourg</keyword> (8), <keyword id="6359079" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Portugal">Portugal</keyword> (9) - with <keyword id="6355478" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Australia">Australia</keyword> (3) and <keyword id="6355311" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Japan">Japan</keyword> (10) as the two exceptions.

India ranks poorly in Global Youth Development Index, at 133rd spot

New Delhi, Jan 31 () India's development trajectory is critically linked with investments in social infrastructure and the country's march towards attaining Sustainable Development Goals is firmly anchored in investing in human capital and inclusive growth, the Economic Survey 2019-20 said.
 To reap the benefits of demographic dividend, the government is committed to improve the outcomes in education and skilling, and to provide employment and affordable healthcare to all, as per the survey tabled in Parliament on Friday.
 "India's march towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is firmly anchored in investing in human capital and inclusive growth," Economic Survey 2019-20 said.
 Scaling up development programmes for improving connectivity, providing housing and bridging gender gaps in socio-economic indicators is of paramount importance for sustainable development.
 It stated that the public investments in social infrastructure like education, health, housing and connectivity have a critical role in ensuring inclusive development in a developing country like India.
 "The 17 SDGs and 169 targets envisaged in the Agenda 2030, are closely interrelated with social infrastructure," it said.
 With the underlying dimensions of education and health embedded in SDGs, the improvement in Human Development Index (HDI) is also interlinked to SDGs as evidenced in the correlation between SDG rankings and HDI rankings of the states.
 The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development calls for global partnership to ensure peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.
 It is recognised that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality and spur economic growth in a sustainable manner, the survey said.
 India is committed to achieve these SDGs and a strong social infrastructure is key to achieve them, it said, adding that the government has been focusing on provisioning of assets such as schools, institutes of higher learning, hospitals, access to sanitation, water supply, road connectivity, affordable housing, skills and livelihood opportunities.
 This gains significance given the fact that India is home to the world's youngest population as half of its population is below the age of 25. SID ANS

So many Indians joining the Pharrell Williams’ Happiness project couoldn’t save the country from ranking 117 out of 158 countries on the index of happiness. 
 As per a news report by the Press Trust of India, the <keyword id="6363778" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="happiness-index">happiness index</keyword> has been mentioned in 2015 World Happiness Report published by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), which is a global initiative for the United Nations. Taking into account GDP per capita, life expectancy, social support and freedom make life choices as indicators of happiness, <keyword id="103" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Switzerland">Switzerland</keyword> has qualified at No. 1 in the happiness index. 
 
The other countries in the top five are Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Canada. 
 
India's rank is 117, below nations like Pakistan (81), Palestine (108), Bangladesh (109), Ukraine (111) and Iraq (112). Its rank dropped six notched from the 2013 report, when it was on the 111 spot, reads the news report of the PTI published in The Economic Times. The US is ranked 15, followed by UK (21), Singapore (24), <keyword id="50996" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saudi-Arabia">Saudi Arabia</keyword> (35), <keyword id="6355311" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Japan">Japan</keyword> (46) and China (84). 
 Afghanistan and war-torn <keyword id="6354913" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Syria">Syria</keyword> joined eight sub-Saharan countries in Africa -- Togo, Burundi, Benin, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Guinea and Chad -- as the 10 least happy of 158 countries.

Are you happy? India isn’t. It ranks 117 out of 158 in World Happiness index

Working in India is still okay, but if you can, plan your retirement somewhere outside India, because the country has been ranked last in the Natixis Global AssManagement's fourth annual <keyword id="3503702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Global-Retirement-Index">Global Retirement Index</keyword> (GRI). 
 
This makes India world's worst country for retirees. 
 
Talking of the top rankers, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland are among the top three countries where retirees have the best life; global power United States ranks 14th on the list. 
 
The list comprises of 43 nations, taking 34 from IMF's advanced economies, five from OECD and four from BRICS. Last year, the list had covered 150 countries, in which India ranked 88th. Even then, it was the worst-performing nation from BRICS. 
 
"In the health sub-index, India ranks last. India has a health index score of just 4%, the lowest score in any sub-index in this year's GRI," the report said. 
 
The objective behind this annual retirement index is to provide a global benchmark for retirees and future retirees so that they can evaluate and compare the suitability of various nations, and plan their retirement according to their expectations and needs. 
 
In 2014, India saw its elderly population crossing the 100 million mark, out of which half live below the poverty line. As per a report by HelpAge India, elderly Indians will be making up 20% of India's population by 2050. 
 
"India is last in the quality of Life sub-index with a score of 6%. India has the lowest score for air quality, happiness and water and sanitation and the second to last in biodiversity and habitat," the report added.

India ranks LAST in global retirement index

There exists a considerable overlap between the recently adopted United Nation’s (UN) <keyword id="55804" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="sustainable-development">Sustainable Development</keyword> Goals (SDGs) targeted to be achieved by 2030 and the social dimensions incorporated in the <keyword id="2181132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Social-Progress-Index">Social Progress Index</keyword> (SPI) developed by the Social Progress Imperative, a nonprofit organization based in Washington. The UN’s sustainable development agenda comprises of 17 goals pertaining to poverty eradication, lessening inequality and injustice and environmental challenges, particularly climatic changes and hold a global applicability, irrespective of the level of development of a nation. Likewise, the SPI captures comprehensively social progress of a country by incorporating various social and environmental indicators which have been distinctly grouped into three dimensions- Basic Human Needs such as food, water, sanitation, shelter, and personal safety; Foundations of Wellbeing for a better life such as basic education, information and communication, health , and environmental sustainability and thirdly, the Opportunity to improve one’s life through provision of rights, freedom , equality and access to advanced education. Figure1.1 highlights the overlap between the UN’s SDGs and the three dimensions of the SPI.

The SPI by aggregating indicators across all the dimensions provides a holistic measure to benchmark the progress reached on the sustainable development agenda of the UN. While, the world scores 61 on a scale of 100 on social progress, there exists a wide diversity in the social progress levels reached across the world, with countries falling under the category of “Low Social Progress” and “Very Low Social Progress” being the countries of concern for achieving the new SDGs for 2030. 
 
Looking at the SPI performance for India, which has been classified as one of the low social progress countries, it has been observed that while India performs well in terms of Nutrition and Basic Medical Care and Access to Basic Knowledge, it lags behind in many other critical aspects of development. For instance, in 2015, only 36 per cent of the population had access to improved sanitation facilities and about 26 per cent had access to piped water. Moreover, due to excessive freshwater withdrawals India is currently facing high water stress levels. In addition to this, about 25 per cent of the population does not have access to electricity, along with a poor quality of electricity supply to the rest of the masses. Further, India has low tolerance for all the members of its population, making it socially less progressive compared to the other countries. For instance, India has been ranked 128th in 133 countries on tolerance for immigrants from other countries. Understanding the pressing need of fostering social progress for India, the current Narendra Modi government has implemented a development strategy that is closely aligned with the recent UN’s sustainable development agenda. One of the most striking initiatives undertaken so far have been “Make in India” drive having intent of propelling domestic manufacturing growth along with spurring foreign direct investment, job creation and innovation in sectors such as automotive, defense manufacturing, electronics, mining, pharmaceuticals and renewable energy. In addition to this, initiatives such as “Digital India” and “Smart Cities” have committed to providing best in class infrastructure and smart solutions to its people such as smart energy systems, green transportation and smart buildings intended to save energy usage. 
 
Further, as India accounts for about 50 per cent of the world’s open defecation, Government of India and the World Bank have also signed a US$500 million credit for the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) project in the states of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. This complements the popular “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”, national campaign by the Government of India to clean the roads of the country. Several other programmes that would enable India to achieve higher social progress include “Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation” which proposes housing for all by 2022, and “Skill India” initiative which proposes to empower about 40 crore individuals with skills by 2022. Moreover, to drive innovation and the related growth, which is essential for sustainable development, Modi government has also taken steps to promote intellectual property rights within the country. A national Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) policy has been formulated which suggests providing tax benefits to the IPR creation. 
 
On the front of environmental sustainability, which has been another area of concern for sustainable development of a country, in the World Climate Change Conference (COP21) held in Paris in 2015, India has shown its support along with 176 other countries so far by signing the climatic change agreement which proposes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit the global rise in temperature to 1.5 degree Celsius. 
Thus, while several efforts have been taken up by the Indian government towards a more sustainable development growth path, it must be realized that to achieve the global goals, the world’s social progress score would have to reach atleast 75 out of 100(Report by Deloitte UK and Social Progress Imperative), which is possible only if all the countries, irrespective of their current level of economic growth overperform on social progress. One of the countries worth highlighting here is Costa Rica, which has achieved a SPI score of 77.88 with a GDP per capita of only $13, 431 per annum. While, several social indicators are positively impacted by economic prosperity, indicators on the front of health and wellness, rights and freedom, tolerance and inclusion and environment have a weak correlation with GDP, thus highlighting the necessity of prioritizing such dimensions directly so as to achieve the desired social progress score for the UN’s SDGs for 2030.

India’s Development Strategy towards Social Progress and UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Britain ranks one of the worst advanced countries for employment opportunities, pay, living standards and social inclusion.That is according to the World Economic Forum, which released a major new report entitled "<a href="http://wef.ch/igd17">WEF Inclusive Growth and Development Report</a>" on Sunday evening.&#xa0;The report includes&#xa0;the "Inclusive Development Index," which measures 109 countries for inclusive development.&#xa0;Out of these countries, 30 are considered "advanced economies" and within that sub-index, the&#xa0;<keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> ranks 21st out of 30.The&#xa0;results are derived by looking at&#xa0;12 key performance indicators of inclusive development under three pillars: <ul><li>Growth and Development;</li><li>Inclusion;</li><li>Intergenerational Equity and Sustainability.</li></ul>Within these pillars, WEF gets a score from looking at each country's ranking in:<ul><li>GDP growth, labour force participation and productivity, and healthy life expectancy;</li><li>Median household income, poverty and two inequality measures</li><li>Adjusted net saving (including natural capital depletion and human capital investment), demographic dependency ratio, public debt and carbon intensity.</li></ul>And this is the chart to show how the UK performed:<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>"Over the past several years, a worldwide consensus has emerged on the need for a more inclusive growth and development model; however, this consensus is mainly directional. Is India environmentally a developed nation? The first ever Environmental Democracy Index has the answer. 
 
As per a Press Trust of India (PTI) news report, India has ranked 24th out of 70 countries in the index to understand the state of environmental democracy for countries around the world. 
 Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, the US, South <keyword id="12925" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Africa">Africa</keyword>, the UK, Hungary, Bulgaria, Panama and <keyword id="15385" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Colombia">Colombia</keyword> are the top 10 nations in the list launched by Washington-based <keyword id="6356505" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Resources-Institute">World Resources Institute</keyword> (WRI) and Access Initiative yesterday. 
 "With a number of critical moments in <keyword id="6356826" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="environment">environment</keyword> and sustainability in 2015, advancing good governance and environmental rights are essential. This index is a powerful lever that will help governments to become more transparent and ordinary citizens to advocate for more rights," <keyword id="130143" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mark-Robinson">Mark Robinson</keyword>, <keyword id="241804" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-director">global director</keyword>, Governance, WRI told the news agency. 
 
According to the report, 93 per cent of the assessed countries have established the right to environmental information. 
 
However, almost half of these countries (45 per cent) do not have strong protections to ensure that access to information is affordable and timely, it said. 
 
The PTI report further says, nearly half (46 per cent) of the countries assessed do not provide any ambient air quality data online for their capital cities. 
 
In 73 per cent of the countries, courts will hear environmental cases. But very few countries assessed have assistance for marginalized groups, the report said. 
 Only 14 per cent of the countries have legal mechanisms that help <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> access courts to obtain redress when their environmental rights are violated, the PTI report added.

<ul><li>India slipped ten places in the <keyword id="2040615" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Competitiveness-Index">Global Competitiveness Index</keyword>, ranking at 68.</li><li>The country’s ICT technology innovation capacity is growing but isn’t backed by investment in human capital.</li><li>India’s overall score is relatively stable but countries ranked near India demonstrated more growth.</li></ul>Getting more people online has been the goal of the current Indian government since its rise to power. Fall in the price of 3G and 4G data has also made it more affordable for people to connect to the internet. Despite these strides, India fell 10 places in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) <a href="http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_TheGlobalCompetitivenessReport2019.pdf">Global Competitiveness Index</a>, ranking at 68. India’s slip in the rankings is only partially because of the fall in its score — a drop of 0.7 points. The report notes that a greater factor may have been because other countries — which were previously ranked lower on the Global Competitiveness Index — have shown faster improvement, especially when it comes to the adoption of information and technology. India has improved significantly since 2017, but information and communication technology (ICT) continues to remain a challenge due to underlying factors like women participation in the workforce and weak workers’ policies. India and other emerging economies are also showing signs of stagnation and slowdown since their growth has largely been ‘anaemic’ — or unequal. India’s mixed results More ICT means more innovation, according to the WEF. In order to deal with the growth of their innovation capacity, emerging economies — like China, India and Brazil — need to strengthen their skills and labour market. Technological integration is good on paper. But, without human capital investment, it remains largely inadequate. India performed well in terms of innovation, ranking 35th in the world. But, it falls short when it comes to other foundational enablers of competitiveness on the Global Competitiveness Index. The one thing that does work in India’s favour is its market size. Even its financial sector ranks better than most other countries despite the high delinquency rate — that’s not to say that the banking system has not weakened. On the other hand, India ranks as low as 107th when it comes to skills, and is at 101th in terms of product market efficiency. The country’s labour market needs transformation in order to protect its workers and also encourage female participation in the world place — which is abysmally low at a rank of 128 — according to the WEF. This is also reflected the level of inequality in India. Income share of the top 10% in the country is higher than levels seen in the US, China and even Russia. India’s progress was good — Others were better The East Asia and Pacific region is the most competitive in the world. Countries like Singapore, Japan and Taiwan lead the charge on the rest of the world. In fact, Singapore holds the highest rank on the Global Competitive Index. But India lags woefully behind, according to the WEF. Countries ranked near India all show small, but significant improvements in their score. Vietnam, for instance, is ranked 67 and moved up 10 places in the index showing 3.5 points of improvement. Azerbaijan made an even greater jump of 11 places even though its competitive score only increased by 2.7 points to rank at 58. Turkey was able to maintain its rank at 61 but only because its performance improved by 0.5 points. One of the reasons for its improved competitiveness is the diffusion of the Internet across the country. Turkey’s also has more women participating in the workforce and has strengthened workers’ rights. Colombia, 57th on the Global Competitive Index, moved up three places brushing up its score by 1.1 points. India vs BRICS Among the BRICS nations, China is the best performer, maintaining its 28th position and outranking the Russian Federation at 43. That’s 40 places and 14 points ahead of India on the Global Competitive Index. China’s performance is almost at par with OECD standards. In fact, its ICT adoption outperforms all 25 of the OECD countries. South Africa, also moved up 7 places in the Global Competitive Index with a score improvement of 1.7 points ranking at 60. The only BRICS nation to rank lower than India is Brazil at 71.
