Emissions from residential cooking and heating, power generation, and industries together contribute up to 60 per cent of India's PM2.5 pollution, with about 80 per cent of this coming from <keyword id="23824528" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fossil-fuel-combustion" source="keywords">fossil fuel combustion</keyword>, a new study has found. The peer-reviewed study, published in MDPI's "Air" journal, suggests dividing India into 15 airsheds based on regional climate and pollution sources. An airshed is a geographic area where <keyword id="53848" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-quality" source="Orion">air quality</keyword> is influenced by common factors such as wind patterns and pollution sources. Since pollution can spread across regions, the <keyword id="22077484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airshed-approach" source="keywords">airshed approach</keyword> promotes coordinated action among states. "Residential cooking and heating, power generation, and all other industries together are responsible for 40-60 per cent of the PM2.5 pollution in all the airsheds, and approximately 80 per cent of the pollution comes from fossil fuel burning sources," said Sarath Guttikunda, lead author of the study and founder of UrbanEmissions.info. The study said biomass burning, including post-harvest crop residue burning, contributed less than 3 per cent to annual PM2.5 levels while transport accounted for 5-10 per cent in all airsheds. PM2.5 are fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less, about the width of a human hair. These are so small that these can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, posing significant health risks. An analysis of PM2.5 trends from 1998 to 2020, along with state-level data on fuel consumption, energy demand and emissions, revealed that 11 of the 15 airsheds were critical for India's air quality management and required coordinated interventions. The Indo-Gangetic Plains remain the most polluted region, with significant emissions from residential cooking and heating (especially in winter), power plants, brick kilns (driven by construction demand), waste burning, dust and vehicular movement for passengers and freight. The plateau region between the Eastern and Western Ghats, India's second most populated area, has seen the highest rise in annual PM2.5 pollution during this period, the study said. "This is an indication of the growing urbanisation and demand for transport, industrial, and commercial amenities," it said. Coastal areas, vital to India's industrial economy, have also experienced rising pollution despite the moderating effects of land-sea breezes. This increase is attributed to growing shipping emissions and overall industrial growth in cities such as Mundra, Surat, Mumbai, Goa, Mangalore, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Haldia.

Indian Energy Exchange records 24% growth in September 2024

New Delhi: Consumer Electronics maker <keyword id="20046687" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="samsung-india" source="keywords">Samsung India</keyword> on Tuesday launched a new range of <keyword id="20097714" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-powered" source="keywords">AI-powered</keyword> <keyword id="20101665" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="washing-machine" source="keywords">washing machine</keyword>s and aims to be the market leader in the <keyword id="20097242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="premium" source="keywords">premium</keyword> segment in the coming quarters, said a company official on Tuesday. The company, which currently holds around 20 per cent of the washing machine market, has "an objective of becoming a consumer leader" by gaining market share quarter-on-quarter, outpacing the industry growth, said <keyword id="19897758" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Samsung" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> India Senior Director, Digital Appliances, Saurabh Baishakhia. Samsung expects new launches, the ongoing trend of premiumisation in the appliances segment and the coming festive season this year and tailwind from attractive financing schemes breaking down acquisition costs will help it gain in the segment and claim market leadership, he said. "We have 20 per cent market share and are looking further improving it. We aspire to become a brand that is bought by most consumers," Baishakhia told PTI. At present, South Korean maker LG Electronics is the leader in the Indian Washing Machine segment, with over 35 per cent overall market. In the washing machine vertical, brands like Haier, Bosch, Siemens, IFB, Godrej Appliances, and Whirlpool of India compete with Samsung. Samsung is looking at the new consumer trends, where people are upgrading and replacing, opting for a higher capacity washing machine of over 9 kg, which currently contributes 40 per cent of the front-load model sales. As per its strategy, Samsung is focusing on the front-load washing machine. Within this, models with a load capacity of nine kg and above are having a higher growth of 50 per cent, said Baishakhia. "So, people are already paying a premium in this industry for a large capacity of nine kg. We are doing is democratising it further by giving them even a larger load," he said, adding that the demand for the large sizes is growing because of changes in lifestyle besides growing urbanisation and rise in disposable income. Consumers are paying around a 5 per cent premium on the addition of every one kg load capacity. However, Samsung is a 12 kg capacity washing machine with a 10 per cent premium only against a 20 per cent market trend. "We have got the inflection point to almost half of it, which means that even at a premium of 10 per cent, they will not only get a larger capacity size but also get all these features," Baishakhia said. The Indian washing machine market is estimated to be around 10 million units annually, growing in single digits. Semi-automatic machines are still popular in rural markets, but full automatic front load and top load models are catching up now. When asked if Samsung would have a leadership position in the premium segment of Washing Mahchine over Rs 30,000 plus per unit, Baishakhia said the company would. "For us, our first target is to become a leader in this front-loading segment... So, our current goal would be, as to how, in this category, we can gain the highest market share and lead the market," he said. Samsung has claimed that its new AI-powered line-up of 10 large-sized front-load washing machines of 12 Kg will help to reduce energy consumption by around 70 per cent and be a "game changer". These machines with larger drums will reduce the wash timing to 39 minutes as the AI will detect the fabric and water turbidity and also decide on the perfect amount of detergent and fabric care. "Through this AI energy mode, we will be reducing energy consumption by more than 70 per cent. So, it will also be adapting to the consumer habit, with habit learning to suggest what kind of cycles suit most washing times," he said, adding that users will also have seamless information exchange through Samsung's app.

In the first three quarters of FY24, investments to the tune of ₹10.80 lakh crore were announced. Most of these announcements were dominated by airlines, power, chemicals and machinery. Bank of Baroda in a report said that 2023’s investment announcements, most of which might not materialize, are at the lowest since 2018. That however excludes 2020, when Covid-19 induced lockdown was in-effect. “Data on new investment announcements do indicate that industry in general is still in a wait and watch mode. One factor holding back investment could be excess capacity in several sectors. <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> data for June shows the average at 73.6%,” said economists at Bank of Baroda. Apart from this, uncertainty due to the elections could have played a role in companies being tight fisted. “The third factor could be high interest rates and the expectation of repo rate cuts next year in the second quarter of the fiscal,” the economists added. The consumption loan boom On the other hand, consumption loans that include home loans, auto loans, personal loans etc, grew the fastest at 37.7% in FY23. Within consumption, personal loans saw the sharpes growth, followed by consumer durable loans. Public and private sector banks give a large chunk of home loans. “There is a 22% increase in average ticket size (ATS) from ₹20.2 lakh in FY20 to ₹24.7 lakh in FY23. There has been a shift in originations by both value and volume seen from ticket size ₹5-35 lakh to ₹35-75 lakh,” said CRIF. The Snapdragon 8 Elite will power the next-gen flagship Android smartphones. The Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset is the successor of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and comes with a new moniker. In addition to announcing the chipset, the American chip giant also revealed some of the devices that will be launched with the new chipset in the coming weeks. <h2>Snapdragon 8 Elite features and specifications</h2>The Snapdragon 8 Elite uses the company’s second-gen Oryon CPU with a custom eight-core structure. It offers two prime cores clocked at 4.32 GHz and six performance cores clocked at 3.53 GHz. It offers support for 5,300MHz LPDDR5X RAM. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="114275922" title="Samsung Galaxy Ring is now available in India at ₹38,999" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> The new chipset is built on TSMC’s 3nm process and is claimed to offer a 45% boost in CPU performance and a 44% improvement in power efficiency. Coming to the graphics, the Snapdragon 8 Elite is equipped with a revamped Adreno GPU which is claimed to offer 40% improved performance and power efficiency. For gamers, it is claimed to offer 35% improved ray tracing performance. This will also be the first chipset to offer support for Unreal Engine 5.3. "We are so excited to bring the power of Qualcomm Oryon to our Snapdragon mobile platforms for the first time. It's a major leap forward and we expect consumers to be thrilled with the new experiences enabled by our CPU technology,” said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets, Qualcomm Technologies. Qualcomm’s new Spectra ISP ensures superior low-light performance, faster autofocus, and enhanced image processing. The Snapdragon 8 Elite comes with the Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System along with the Qualcomm 5G AI Suite Gen 3. The company has said that it has revamped HyperCore and this will offer a 3-degree Celsius decline in temperatures while gaming and reduce the power consumption by up to 29.7%. <h2><keyword id="20850131" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="OnePlus-13" source="keywords">OnePlus 13</keyword></h2>The OnePlus 13 is among the most awaited smartphones in the affordable flagship segment and is set to be launched in China on October 31. Snapdragon 8 Elite announced, to power iQOO 13, OnePlus 13, Xiaomi 15 series and more

<ul><li>Inflation has been eating into the purchasing power of lower and middle income groups with many essentials’ sales falling.</li><li>Majority of the upper and upper middle class respondents saw their household incomes go up more than inflation.</li><li>There is a dichotomy seen in online festive sales too as premium products are bought with discounts and purchase options say experts. </li></ul>There are two Indias within the great sub-continent. One where the day-breaking drink of tea has become dearer for many this year and the other half is doubling down on wine purchases. Neither of them are affected by the base effect of last year. <keyword id="2653343" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tea-sales" source="Orion">Tea sales</keyword> were down last year too, and <keyword id="806378" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wine-sales" source="Orion">wine sales</keyword> were up — darkening the ‘K’ line on economic recovery charts. Madan Sabnavis, the chief economist of Bank of Baroda calls it a schizophrenic pattern of consumption. “Sales are doing better in categories where price does not matter,” he tells Business Insider India. <div type="image" title="grocery demand" msid="104810160" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Source: Pixabay &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> It’s discretion not price The categories of goods where price matters are seeing low growth in output – a reflection of demand. Some of the casualties are detergent powders, groundnut oils, shampoos and hair dyes. Their output fell between April to August 2023, compared to the year before, as per BoB economics research. Inflation has a more indirect effect on these purchases. For example, tea and shampoo saw moderate inflation but their demand fell. Inflation was high in coffee, toothpaste and soaps but their demand grew. “The generalized inflation factor has been at work where real income has come down thus leading to lower purchasing power,” said BoB. In a survey conducted by UBS, about 46% of respondents said that they’re buying less personal care and packaged food compared to last year. For purchase of home care products, the respondents were largely neutral versus last year, it added. India’s largest FMCG player Hindustan Unilever with a large presence across rural and urban India has seen a direct impact of it in the quarter that ended in September 2023. Its overall urban volumes grew 3% and rural volumes fell 1%. “Rural recovery is likely to remain gradual,” the company said in its investor presentation indicating that the situation might not see any dramatic recovery in the coming months. Rural India saw reverse migration during the pandemic, but not all of them have gone back, opines Sabnavis. A chunk of downtrading is also being seen in urban areas amongst income groups that are facing the heat of inflation, experts add. At the other end This is, however, only one half of the story. At the other end, many Indians are not blinking while making discretionary purchases. A majority of the upper and middle class respondents – 65% – surveyed by UBS, saw their household incomes go up more than inflation. “The top 20% of the population account for the bulk of discretionary consumption. The survey results support our view that affluent consumers‘ income levels are holding up, as reflected in corporate wage growth that continues at double digits,” said UBS. Lalit Jhawar, co-founder and CEO, LandCraft Retail says that high-end gourmet products in urban areas have been steadily increasing over the last few years. He owns a luxury gourmet retails store- Food Square in Mumbai, which sells cheeses, truffles, caviar, artisanal breads and all the other international food items. “Affluence in urban areas has grown, resulting in a larger number of consumers with higher discretionary income,” Jhawar tells Business Insider India. Online sales: A story of dichotomy Another sign of higher spending is seen in the e-commerce festival sales. The first week of the many festival discount sales saw ₹47,000 crore worth of goods being sold, which is 19% higher than last year, says Redseer Consulting. Online sales, which now sees a good measure of metro and demand from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, is showing a dichotomy as well, say experts. “Two Indias have come into play where one India is saving up and waiting for prices to come down to clinch a good deal on premium products. On the other hand, there are low-value product sales i.e value-for-money purchases that are being bought more frequently,” said Abhishek Tandon, engagement manager at Redseer Strategy Consultants. The sale season, which is manna for bargain hunters, is also enthused by the number of Buy Now Pay Later and EMI options. “When it comes to big ticket purchases, premiumization is bolstered by financing options and discounts that make it affordable,” adds Tandon. In the pre-festive period between April and August,however, most consumer durable sales were in a negative zone, due to the high-base effect of last year, says Bank of Baroda’s report. Refrigerators, mobiles, readymade garments all showed a negative output – also indicating that discounts play a large role in discretionary purchases. Indian consumers have always been complicated and price has always played a big role in purchase decisions, choice of brands and more. But it’s no longer a linear story. One end of the market, driven by affluence, is veering towards premium purchases. The other end is looking for ways to survive with less in hand as inflation is eating into their purchasing power.
