Unrelenting rain forced the abandonment of the first-day's play of the two-day practice match between India and Prime Minister's XI here on Saturday, robbing Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill of some much-needed Pink ball game time ahead of the day-night second Test against Australia at Adelaide. The teams have agreed to play a 50-over-a-side match on Sunday at the Manuka Oval, weather permitting. However, the day might have come as a dampener for captain Rohit, who had skipped the first Test at Perth to welcome a baby boy into his family, ahead of the Pink Ball Test, starting from December 6. Though he has had couple of extensive net sessions with Pink ball, facing some quality bowlers in a real-match situation holds a different value, considering India's last day-night Test was against Sri Lanka in March 2022 in Bengaluru. Gill had to sit out of the first Test because of a finger injury and the top-order batter is expected to walk back into the eleven. Prior to that, Gill, who also had a good hit at nets on Friday, would have been hoping to enter the match zone through this side game. Rohit and Gill are expected to replace Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel in the playing eleven for the Adelaide Test. Now, they will pin their hope to form some early plans for the Pink ball Test on Sunday through that 50-over game. India have so far played four pink ball Tests. After their victory over Bangladesh (2019, Kolkata), India lost to Australia in 2020 (Adelaide) before winning against England (2021, Ahmedabad) and Sri Lanka (2022, Bengaluru) at home.

Emissions from residential cooking and heating, power generation, and industries together contribute up to 60 per cent of India's PM2.5 pollution, with about 80 per cent of this coming from <keyword id="23824528" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fossil-fuel-combustion" source="keywords">fossil fuel combustion</keyword>, a new study has found. The peer-reviewed study, published in MDPI's "Air" journal, suggests dividing India into 15 airsheds based on regional climate and pollution sources. An airshed is a geographic area where <keyword id="53848" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-quality" source="Orion">air quality</keyword> is influenced by common factors such as wind patterns and pollution sources. Since pollution can spread across regions, the <keyword id="22077484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airshed-approach" source="keywords">airshed approach</keyword> promotes coordinated action among states. "Residential cooking and heating, power generation, and all other industries together are responsible for 40-60 per cent of the PM2.5 pollution in all the airsheds, and approximately 80 per cent of the pollution comes from fossil fuel burning sources," said Sarath Guttikunda, lead author of the study and founder of UrbanEmissions.info. The study said biomass burning, including post-harvest crop residue burning, contributed less than 3 per cent to annual PM2.5 levels while transport accounted for 5-10 per cent in all airsheds. PM2.5 are fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less, about the width of a human hair. These are so small that these can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, posing significant health risks. An analysis of PM2.5 trends from 1998 to 2020, along with state-level data on fuel consumption, energy demand and emissions, revealed that 11 of the 15 airsheds were critical for India's air quality management and required coordinated interventions. The Indo-Gangetic Plains remain the most polluted region, with significant emissions from residential cooking and heating (especially in winter), power plants, brick kilns (driven by construction demand), waste burning, dust and vehicular movement for passengers and freight. The plateau region between the Eastern and Western Ghats, India's second most populated area, has seen the highest rise in annual PM2.5 pollution during this period, the study said. "This is an indication of the growing urbanisation and demand for transport, industrial, and commercial amenities," it said. Coastal areas, vital to India's industrial economy, have also experienced rising pollution despite the moderating effects of land-sea breezes. This increase is attributed to growing shipping emissions and overall industrial growth in cities such as Mundra, Surat, Mumbai, Goa, Mangalore, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Haldia.

While the exact causes of asthma remain complex and varied, this new study underlines that PM2.5 pollution is a significant risk factor. The study brings together insights from 68 epidemiological studies conducted across 22 countries, spanning regions from North America to South Asia. The PM E-DRIVE scheme will be implemented from tomorrow, October 1, 2024, and will be in force till March 31, 2026. The total outlay of ₹10,900 crore is spread over two years, with ₹5,047 crore allocated for FY 2024-25 and ₹5,853 crore for FY 2025-26. The scheme is aimed at accelerating the adoption of EVs in the country, with a focus on electric two-wheelers, electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws) and more. The scheme will also offer grants for the creation of capital assets such as electric buses, the establishment of a network of charging stations and the upgradation of testing agencies identified under this scheme. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113050150" title="Electric two-wheeler sales declined in August 2024, but year-on-year growth continues" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> The PM E-DRIVE Scheme has replaced the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India (FAME-II) scheme. The government introduced the FAME-II scheme in 2019 with a budget of ₹10,000 crore, which was later enhanced to ₹11,500 crore to extend its support for electric vehicles until March 2024. The PM E-DRIVE subsumes the ongoing EMPS-2024 scheme. A major focus of the scheme is providing demand incentives to lower the acquisition cost of EVs for consumers. For FY 2024-25, the scheme proposes a demand incentive of ₹5,000 per kWh for e-2Ws and e-3Ws, which will be reduced to ₹2,500 per kWh in FY 2025-26. A major part of the outlay, around ₹8,070 crore has been earmarked for EVs. This includes ₹4,391 crore for electric buses and ₹1,772 crore for electric two-wheelers. As part of the scheme, the central government aims to support the purchase of over 14,000 e-buses, establish 2,000 charging stations, and upgrade EV testing facilities across the country.
