Security software firm <keyword id="111839" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Symantec">Symantec</keyword> has claimed that India is the worst hit country in the entire Asia Pacific region by the '<keyword id="3305248" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="petya">Petya</keyword>' <keyword id="6362094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ransomware">ransomware</keyword>, while globally, it stands at the seventh place in the list of most affected nations. The ransomware has claimed thousands of victims all over the world.Symantec’s list of worst hit nations in the world is topped by Ukraine, the US and Russia, while France, the UK, Germany, China and Japan also feature on the list.After the '<keyword id="6362093" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="wannacry">WannaCry</keyword>' ransomware attack that took place in May and affected over 100 countries, this is the second time this year that cyber security has been at risk.Some of the biggest corporations that have borne the impact of ths attack are Russia's largest oil company Rosneft, Ukraine's international airport, shipping firm AP Moller-Maersk, and advertising giant WPP.In India, the attack is said to have affected one of the terminals at the <keyword id="107920" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru-Port-Trust">Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust</keyword> (JNPT), while operations at private port operator, APM Terminals Pipavav were also partially disturbed.(Image source YouTube)

India worst hit by Petya in Asia Pacific region, claims Symantec

Remember the ransomware WannaCry that hit the globe last month? Well, a new ransomware has yet again hit several countries, locking up computer screens of as many as 20 companies across the world. <keyword id="4701507" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Petwrap">Petwrap</keyword>, dubbed as an advanced version of ransomware <keyword id="3305248" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="petya">Petya</keyword>, has targeted users across India and Europe and shipping, aviation and oil and gas companies have been hit in the UK, Russia, France, Spain and elsewhere. Petwrap is believed to be asking for $300 to free up the locked computer screens. Mondelez, Merck and Maersk were targeted by the ransomware. As per several reports, Indian units of UK and Russia-based oil and gas, energy and aviation companies were also hit. A Mondelez International spokesperson said, "The network is experiencing global IT outage. Our team is working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible." Meanwhile, Neeraj Bansal, deputy chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust said the operations at Gateway Terminals India, operated by Maersk Group-owned APM Terminals at the Mumbai-based port, has been impacted. "They are trying to do what they can manually. They have told us assessing the situation and trying to find a solution as soon as they can," Bansal told ET.

With the global cyber attack by malware Petya occuring days before <keyword id="912223" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="goods-and-services">goods and services</keyword> tax (<keyword id="6354679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST">GST</keyword>) rollout date, GST Network (<keyword id="6356840" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="GSTN">GSTN</keyword>) has assured that its operations have not been affected and there has been no impact on registrations. GSTN Chief Executive Prakash Kumar said that the IT company took all necessary precautions in case such ransomware attacks happen, ensuring the safety of all data. GSTN will be handling the mammoth IT back office with over 3 billion invoices per month. "We have taken all care and there is nothing to worry about. Our system is run on Linux software and all data are safe and operations are going on smoothly," Kumar said. It was last night that the global malware attack named Petya started disrupting functioning at some central banks and many large corporations in Europe. The Indian shipping industry was affected by the attack as it hit the functioning of one of the terminals of India's largest container port JNPT at Nava Sheva. While that's still slower than the pace of growth in 2022 at 3.4%, it's an improvement from the IMF's <a href="https://www.imf.org/en/Blogs/Articles/2022/11/13/slowing-global-economic-growth-is-increasingly-evident-high-frequency-data-show" target="_blank" rel="noopener">October forecast</a> of a 2.7% rise. Strong labor markets, increased household consumption and business investment, and China's economic reopening from the COVID-19 pandemic, all contribute to the cheery outlook. "We're well away from any kind of global recession marker," Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, the IMF's chief economist, told <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-31/imf-raises-world-economic-outlook-for-the-first-time-in-a-year" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bloomberg</a> on Tuesday."This time around, the global economic outlook hasn't worsened. That's good news, but not enough. The road back to a full recovery, with sustainable growth, stable prices, and progress for all, is only starting," Gourinchas also wrote in a <a href="https://www.imf.org/en/Blogs/Articles/2023/01/30/global-economy-to-slow-further-amid-signs-of-resilience-and-china-re-opening" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Monday blogpost.</a>The IMF highlighted India and China as bright spots in the global economy. The two countries account for half of global growth in 2023, Gourinchas added in his blogpost. The US and Euro-zone will collectively account for just one-tenth of growth.And it also seemed surprisingly upbeat about the Russian economy — it expects the economy to grow, even amid sweeping sanctions against Moscow over the Ukraine war and a <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/QANDA_22_7469" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$60 a barrel price cap</a> for its crude oil exports — suggesting the restrictions are not that effective.The IMF expects Russia's economy to expand 0.3% in 2023 and 2.1% in 2024 — a stark reversal from an expected 2.2% contraction in 2022. The IMF had predicted in October that <a href="https://www.imf.org/external/np/g20/pdf/2022/111322.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Russia's economy</a> would contract by 3.4% in 2022."At the current oil price cap level of the Group of Seven, Russian crude oil export volumes are not expected to be significantly affected, with Russian trade continuing to be redirected from sanctioning to non-sanctioning countries," according to the IMF.The fund told <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/emerging-markets-growth-slowdown-bottomed-out-2022-risks-remain-imf-2023-01-31/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reuters</a> that Russia's economy was supported by a "fairly high" export revenue in 2022 and robust fiscal stimulus in part from military spending.However, the country is still expected to post a a decline in growth in the medium term due to the Ukraine war, Petya Koeva-Brooks, deputy director of the IMF's research department, told the news agency.
