The idea of buying ‘real’ Art has been limited to few who could blow a few Crores to hang a big name on the wall. The list included Art Connoisseurs and businessmen who could indulge in the luxury of investing and curating art pieces. Not anymore. 
 
The democratization of Art in India and the convenience of the Internet has seen many independent artists making a name for themselves by selling affordable art. 
 
Meet <a href="http://cupick.com/">Cupick</a>, a platform that helps monetize one’s creative assets by putting it on consumable products. It currently sells t-shirts, hoodies, posters, art prints, canvases and cards. 
 
Artists choose the products they want to sell, the price, and the company takes care of everything else. There is also a community where artists can follow, collaborate and interact with others of their kind. 
 
“Cupick is about making art consumable and accessible. The world’s so much better if we have a lot more beauty around”, Justin Alva, Co-founder and CMO says. 
 
DeviantArt and Behance have been the biggest platforms for visual artists around the world to showcase their work. However, they may not be the best places to monetize. Sites like Cupick are India’s answer to RedBubble and SocietySix when it comes to affordable art. 
 
The company has recently garnered $120K worth investments from Indian and overseas investors. Does it indicate to a changing Indian art scenario? 
 
“The boom in the economy has allowed people to spend on things that interest them. We want to make consumables aesthetic, and there is a huge market for it”, Alva says. 
 
The average price for the smallest poster size on the site is around Rs. 200. The costliest could be at Rs. 500 while the average size Art prints go for anything from Rs. 600 to Rs. 800 for the smallest size. So what Art could you possibly buy so cheap? 
 
“A lot of Indian artists between the ages of 21 to 30 have signed up. 30% are from outside of India. There have been signups from Indonesia, Korea, China, Europe, Mexico, US, Columbia, Chile and others. We have artists from 30 countries, give or take a few”, Alva informs. 
 
So how is Cupick different from other T-shirt and poster brands? “Shoppers on Cupick can expect a diverse range, not just pop or quirk”, Alva says. 
 
What’s the way forward for Cupick? 
 
“We have plans to add to product development and expand product categories. Our core focus over the coming months however is to get artists using Cupick and to be Asia’s largest Art catalog. We haven’t ruled out the possibility of partnering with other e-commerce sites”, Alva says.

With the average ‘maturity’ of Indian online shoppers standing at 3.3 years today, there’s only scope for growth of Indian e-commerce. According to a <a href="https://www.pwc.in/assets/pdfs/industries/retail-and-consumer/retail-report-300812.pdf">report</a> done by FICCI and PwC on Indian e-commerce, the Indian retail market is expected to cross $1.3 trillion by 2020. It is likely to be India’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/e-commerce-wars-amazons-jeff-bezos-vs-mukesh-ambani-in-india/articleshow/67620116.cms">largest retail chain operator</a> Reliance Retail, owned by Mukesh Ambani — the richest man, not only in India, but in Asia. The new rules are expected to boost sales for offline vendors by taking away the discounts available to consumers online. CRISIL estimates that it could increase revenue for offline retailers by ₹100 billion to ₹120 billion by 2020. Just as the loss of business for e-commerce is the gain for retail chains, the advantage is usually with the larger players in the space — because of the sheer scale, reach and resources at their disposal. And the largest of them all is Reliance Retail. “The impact on e-tailers would be largely in the electronics and apparel segments, which account for a bulk of their revenues,” says Anuj Sethi, the senior director at CRISIL Ratings. Coincidentally, 34% of Reliance Retail’s revenue comes from its electronics arm — Reliance Digital. It’s also the largest holder of foreign brand licences for apparel in India. Some of its top brands include Diesel, Hamleys, Kenneth and Steve Madden. Reliance Retail’s offline avatar served 3.5 million customers a week through 9,146 stores across 5,800 cities as of September 2018.  If CLSA’s estimate were to come true, Reliance Retail alone will be making over a quarter of all revenue from retail — both online and offline — in India, expected at about $550 billion, in the next decade. The timing There is no doubt that online retail still has a lot of potential in India. Nasscom and PricewaterCoopers (PwC) estimate that the market will balloon to $150 billion by 2022. Now, he is looking to expand the offerings beyond apparel, with a pilot programme in the state of Gujarat. Before Ambani’s entry, Amazon had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/amazon-takes-the-fight-to-walmart-by-investing-another-27-billion-in-india/articleshow/65404423.cms">invested over $4.7 billion</a> in India over the last six years, primarily because it identified the potential of a market with a population of nearly a billion and half people. Over the years, Amazon, Flipkart and other early birds have burnt billions of dollars giving discounts, getting people used to shopping online and creating a market. Then, the government revised its policy on foreign direct investment (FDI) in e-commerce on December 26, 2018, changing the rules of the game, which would bring the likes of Amazon and Walmart on a level playing field with new entrants. Less than a month later, Mukesh Ambani took the stage at the investor summit Vibrant Gujarat and unveiled his plan to expand his online retail business. The government’s new e-commerce rules are essentially trying to protect India’s retailers — including Reliance Retail — from the deep discounts offered by e-commerce giants. That is how Ambani’s physical stores gain. What’s more, as a new entrant to e-commerce, going against established players with equally deep pockets, Ambani will not have to burn money through discounts. In fact, he is not allowed to. He gets a level-playing field to fight established giants like Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart, at no extra cost. The spin Ambani had his own spin on why the change in rules was justified. "In this new world, data is the new oil. And data is the new wealth. India's data must be controlled and owned by Indian people and not by corporates, especially global corporations,” Ambani said at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2018. He was alluding to the fact that two biggest e-commerce companies in India are owned by foreigners, and they have access to priceless data on Indian consumer behaviour. Even people from the government echoed the ‘nationalistic’ spin to the story that Ambani offered. “We don’t want to build walls, but at the same time, we explicitly recognize and appreciate that data is a strategic asset,” Aruna Sundararajan, the nation’s secretary of telecommunications said last year at a press conference. The other view can be equally convincing to Ambani’s critics. John Elliott, the author of “Implosion: India’s tryst with reality” begs to differ. “The idea that Reliance is any safer at protecting Indian people’s data than Amazon or Walmart is ludicrous,” Elliott told Business Insider. Mukesh Ambani may be the surprise winner from India's new rules hurting Amazon and Walmart

<keyword id="22865833" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-vendors" source="keywords">Online vendors</keyword> have generated 15.8 million <keyword id="19914922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jobs" source="keywords">jobs</keyword> in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword>, including 3.5 million for women, with about 1.76 million retail enterprises participating in <keyword id="19990771" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce" source="keywords">e-commerce</keyword> activity, says a report released on Wednesday. The report 'Assessing the Net Impact of e-Commerce on <keyword id="19898684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="employment" source="keywords">Employment</keyword> and Consumer Welfare in India' was launched by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. "Plugging in data from our survey, we estimate that online vendors generate 15.8 million jobs, including 3.5 million jobs for women," the report prepared by Pahle India Foundation (PIF), a Delhi-based policy research institute, said. E-commerce, according to the report, has been a key driver of employment generation In India. On an average, online vendors employ 54 per cent more people and almost twice the number of female employees, compared to offline vendors. The report noted that two of the most widely-recognised contributions of e-commerce penetration in the retail sector are --growth in employment and improvements in consumer welfare. It said rather than displacing physical markets, e-commerce is expanding into new territories like tier 3 cities. "Our data shows that a higher percentage of Tier 3 city consumers spend more than Rs 5,000 per month on online shopping as compared to consumers from bigger cities," it said, adding this is the India consumption story, which enables the co-existence of physical and digital retail. The study analysed the impact e-commerce has had on employment and consumer welfare through a pan-India survey of 2,062 online vendors, 2,031 offline vendors, and 8,209 consumers of products from e-commerce websites across 35 cities in 20 states and UTs. According to the report, each e-commerce vendor on an average employs about 9 people, of which 2 are female, while each offline vendor employs about 6 people, of which only 1 is female. It pointed out that there was increase in employment across skill levels, including high-skilled (management, marketing), medium-skilled (customer service, operations), and low-skilled (warehousing, logistics, delivery) functions. The report said that the growth of e-commerce and accompanying digitalisation have fundamentally changed the skill sets and roles required in the industry. "Vendors have experienced improved business performance parameters since listing online, including higher sales and profits," it said. According to the report, 60 per cent and 52 per cent of vendors, respectively, state that their sales and profits have increased since the time they have started selling online. "Overall, more than two thirds of the online vendors interviewed experienced an increase in online sales value and profits in the past year," the report said, adding that 58 per cent saw an increase in both. Barring costs, it said vendors have seen a positive shift in all other aspects of business performance since they started selling online. The report said there is a strong business case for offline vendors to list on e-commerce platforms or pursue an omni-channel strategy. "E-commerce integration has accrued significant benefits to vendors from smaller cities and micro-enterprises," it said. The study also delves into how e-commerce has reshaped consumer behaviour, noting that consumers have shifted to online shopping for reasons that include convenience, product variety, and access. "A highly engaged consumer base is indicated by the fact that more than 50 per cent of all respondents to the survey spent more than two hours on e-commerce platforms a week, and that 70 per cent made a purchase via e-commerce in the last month alone," it said. Speaking at the event, former NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar said, e-commerce has revolutionized India's retail landscape. Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation(MoSPI) secretary Saurabh Garg lauded the government's initiatives expanding digital public infrastructure that have enabled the smooth expansion of e-commerce. Online vendors generated 15.8 million jobs in India: e-commerce report

Ready to take full advantage of the current market situation, both eCommerce companies and brick-and-mortar retailers want to make maximum profit and debating over who can be tagged as a marketplace. Both share different views over Foreign Direct Investment (<keyword id="44528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FDI">FDI</keyword>) in online stores. 
 eCommerce companies such as Amazon, Flipkart and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> operate as marketplaces in India thus allowing any retailer or trader to sell goods on their platform. But companies such as <keyword id="64373" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shoppers-Stop">Shoppers Stop</keyword>, <keyword id="6398216" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tesco">Tesco</keyword>, <keyword id="6357823" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Big-Bazaar">Big Bazaar</keyword>, <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword> and others work only with their chosen vendors, which makes them closed marketplaces. 
 
The two models of retail - online and offline - have different business models and cannot be looked upon with the same lens, said Aamir Jariwala, secretary, E-commerce Coalition of India, which represents firms such as YepMe, Ferns n Petals and IndiaMart, told the Economic Times. 
 Among all eCommerce companies, only <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> supports opening up online retail to FDI. 
 <keyword id="113282" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Retailers-Association-of-India">Retailers Association of India</keyword> (RAI), a lobby organisation for companies such as Reliance Retail and <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>, has demanded a clarification from the government about what constitutes a marketplace and sought status equivalent to their online rivals, as several large offline retailers, too, explore opening online fronts. 
 
Many of these online stores that could make use of foreign capital are demanding opening up India's ecommerce sector to 100% FDI. But the move is being opposed by larger online marketplaces such as Flipkart and Snapdeal. The government is hearing various retail industry representatives before framing its policy. 
 
While, traditional retailers such as Shoppers Stop and BigBazaar are putting up a united front with RAI. "A lot of our members are either already running or want to open online channels and get access to foreign capital. This ambiguity on 'retail marketplaces' creates a sense of risk," said Kumar Rajagopalan, chief executive at the lobby group. 
 
Offline retailers are also demanding that the government not differentiate within the retail sector by sales channel for drafting FDI regulations. "Creation of a policy on FDI just for online or offline retail is very myopic. It will create an imbalance in the sector," Rajagopalan said. 
 
Ecommerce firms argue that they will lose a good share of the market due to such policies. 
 
Nasir Jamal, secretary general at ECAI, said financial and strategic investors would flock to offline retail if the government equates online and offline retailers with respect to FDI. "Inventory-led ecommerce companies are facing a capital crunch, and are on the lookout for funds and they also need support," he said. 
 "Offline and online retail is converging and the government should precipitate this by having similar policies," said Nitin Gupta, CEO of <keyword id="1493567" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="PayU-India">PayU India</keyword>, owned by South Africa's <keyword id="1634215" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Naspers-Group">Naspers Group</keyword>. 
 
India's ecommerce trade accounts for 2% of the overall retail sector, which grosses over 31.7 lakh crore ($500 billion) annually. The country's online retail sector grew to $12 billion last year.

Fearing competition, Flipkart, Snapdeal oppose 100% FDI in India’s eCommerce sector

<ul><li><keyword id="1640900" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-grocery">Online grocery</keyword> segment will grow by 55% to reach 1.2% of the market by 2023, said a report by RedSeer and <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword>. </li><li>Today online grocery startups account for 40% of total e-commerce funding in India. </li><li>Startups in the online grocery sector have raised $665.70 million in funding in 2019 so far.</li></ul>The Indian online grocery segment is growing fast and how. Currently the online food and grocery retail holds a miniscule part of online retail with only 0.2% penetration. But it is predicted to grow by 55% to reach 1.2% of the market by 2023, said a report by RedSeer and BigBasket. The market size of this segment will also expand to $10.5 billion, the report predicts. The customers’ trust on online shopping along with the growing presence of e-grocery players will drive this growth in the sector, added the report. “The online grocery segment has been one of the fastest-growing e-commerce verticals in India and will continue to flourish in both metro and non-metro cities in the years to come,” said Hari Menon, Co-Founder and CEO, bigbasket. Online grocery vs E-commerce in India As Indians are used to visiting the kirana store in the next lane, online grocery has been growing slowly since onset in 2010. In the past few years however it picked up speed. As the number of e-commerce users grew it had a slow but steady effect on online grocery purchases. From a barely any presence in 2010, today online grocery startups account for 40% of total e-commerce funding in India.

 Tier 2 &amp; 3 cities to lead the next phase of e-grocery Online grocery’s dream to reach $10.5 billion by 2023 will not be fuelled solely by urban growth. A big share of this will come from Tier 2 and 3 cities. Grofers co-founder Dhindsa believes that the next big thing in e-grocery is increasing penetration of e-commerce in tier-2 markets and amongst lower SECs (socio-economic classification) in metros. “E-grocery will bring more shoppers into e-commerce as a whole and already 15% of our new users every month are first time online shoppers. Growing disposable income of the consumers in Tier II markets and the adoption of 4G has already laid a strong foundation for the next wave of growth for e-commerce,” he said.

The new regulation mandates that foreign e-commerce businesses can no longer sell goods from companies or entities in which they own a stake. But the government’s position is a unclear after they <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/amazon-and-flipkart-are-off-the-hook-youll-still-be-able-to-buy-the-amazon-echo-and-marq-products-online/articleshow/67379751.cms">‘clarified’</a> that e-commerce companies can still sell products under their own private label. According to the report, the total volume of sales of goods sold online through digital platforms may see a decline by $800 million in the current fiscal year if the policy does come into effect in February. Revenue will continue to sharply drop over the next three years for those companies that will be forced comply with the new rule. Despite this, the sales may grow but won’t be able meet expectations because of the policy change. Both Amazon and Flipkart — who have majority (70%) of revenue share in the online retail industry of India — are <a href="https://qz.com/india/1525199/modis-new-fdi-rules-will-badly-hit-amazon-india-flipkart/">dependent on sales </a>through group companies for half of their sales, reported Quartz. The new e-commerce rules by the Indian government are aimed at safeguarding the interest of local traders. Before the policy was announced on December 26, Morgan Stanley estimates showed that India’s e-commerce market would witness 30% growth year-on-year over the next 10 years reaching a value of $200 billion by 2027.
