The <keyword id="6064311" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Geminid-meteor">Geminid meteor</keyword> shower, which peaks this year on the late night of December 13, is the most intense meteor shower of the year, Director of M P Birla Planetarium and well-known <keyword id="10424362" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="astrophysicist-debiprasad-duari">astrophysicist Debiprasad Duari</keyword> said in a statement on Saturday. He said the Geminid meteor shower can be viewed from every part of India if the <keyword id="10424361" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sky-conditions">sky conditions</keyword> are favourable. "While it is expected around December 13-14 night, one can probably also see some meteors on early evening hours of December 14," Duari said. Meteors are bright streaks of dazzling light that one often sees in the night sky and they are often termed as "shooting stars". In reality, when a rocky object, which can be as small as a speck of dust enters the earth's atmosphere with a tremendous speed, because of the excitation of the air molecules and friction, a brilliant streak of light is produced, he explained. During a certain period of the year, one gets to see not one but numerous meteors originating from a particular direction of the sky. These are called meteor showers and in general are caused by the earth's passage through the leftover debris of dust, left behind by different comets as they come near the Sun. In general, comets are mostly made up of ice and dust and when they approach the sun, the ice in them melts leaving behind a trail of dust along its path. As earth, in its yearly journey around sun passes through this dusty region, the dust and rocky substances enters the earths atmosphere, sometimes with speed between 30 60 km per second, and produce a shower of light streaks, called as meteor shower. Since they seem to come from one direction of the sky, the practice is to identify the constellation from which they seem to be radiating and <keyword id="10424363" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-meteor-shower">the meteor shower</keyword> is named after the constellation. Among the various meteor showers, one of the most spectacular is the Geminid Meteor shower which occurs every year around the second week of December. Earlier this year, Facebook's safety team determined that Bajrang Dal likely was a "dangerous organization" and, per its <a href="https://about.fb.com/news/2020/08/addressing-movements-and-organizations-tied-to-violence/">policies against such groups</a>, should be removed from the platform entirely, according to The Journal. But Facebook hesitated to enforce those rules after its security team concluded that doing so could hurt its business in India as well as potentially trigger physical attacks against its employees or facilities, The Journal reported. "We ban individuals or entities after following a careful, rigorous, and multi-disciplinary process. We enforce our Dangerous Organizations and Individuals policy globally without regard to political position or party affiliation," a Facebook company spokesperson told Business Insider. According to the Journal, Facebook refused to say whether it ultimately decided to designate Bajrang Dal as not dangerous. This isn't the first time Facebook has faced criticism over how it has — or hasn't — enforced its rules, even within India or even within India in the past few months. <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/facebook-hate-speech-india-politics-muslim-hindu-modi-zuckerberg-11597423346?mod=article_inline">The Journal reported in August</a> that Facebook refused to apply its hate speech policies to T. Facebook employees had concluded that, in addition to violating the company's policies, Singh's rhetoric in the real world was dangerous enough to merit kicking him off the platform entirely. The internal tension over Bajrang Dal reflects the frequent challenges Facebook faces when its profits come into conflict with local governments and laws, rules the company has established for its platform, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg's pledges to uphold free speech and democratic processes. Skywatching in May 2022 – Mars-Jupiter conjunction, lunar eclipse and more

New Delhi [India], November 8 (ANI): Today is the day when the world will witness the last total <keyword id="90051" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lunar-eclipse" source="Orion">lunar eclipse</keyword> of this year. At full moon, when the moon is close to a node, total lunar eclipses take place because the earth blocks the sun's rays from reaching the moon. Almost a year after the last total lunar eclipse, the sight of the moon sliding into the shadows of the Earth returns and graces the sky. Viewers in North America, Central America, most of South America, the Pacific Ocean, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia will see the Moon darken and acquire a reddish in the wee hours of Tuesday, November 8. When and how to watch lunar eclipse The Moon traverses the northern half of Earth's shadow, with totality predicted to last 86 minutes. Mid-eclipse happens on November 8th at 10:59 Universal Time (UT), around six days before apogee, when the Moon is farthest from Earth in its orbit. As a result, during the eclipse, the Moon will appear 7 per cent smaller than it does when it's at perigee (closest to Earth), but the difference is imperceptible. The eclipse on Tuesday will be a bit brighter than the one that occurred in May -- especially in the Moon's northern half -- since the Moon doesn't glide as close to the dark center of Earth's shadow. There are several delightful extras viewers can look out for while admiring the eclipse. During totality, Earth's shadow dims the Moon sufficiently for stars to be visible right up to its edge. In addition, Uranus reaches opposition just a day after the eclipse, when it's directly opposite the Earth from the Sun and at its closest and brightest. And on eclipse night the distant planet will be upper left of the red-hued Moon -- binoculars will reveal the planet's pale disk. The farther west you are, the smaller the gap between planet and Moon. Also, the Northern and Southern Taurid meteor showers peak around this time, so eclipse-watchers might be treated to a few meteors streaking across the night sky. All stages of the eclipse occur simultaneously for everyone, but not everyone will see the full eclipse. Weather permitting, observers in western North America will witness the entirety of the event on the morning of November 8, with the partial eclipse phase beginning an hour or so after midnight. In Hawai'i, the totally eclipsed Moon will be directly overhead. Viewers in the central parts of the continent will see all of totality and most of the final partial phases, while those on the East Coast can watch the Sun rise as totality ends. South America will witness the initial phases of the eclipse up to totality, while Central America can enjoy the show a bit longer and see it through the total phase. The eclipse is an early evening event in central and eastern Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, and the Moon rises either during the earlier partial phases or during totality. The actual clock times of the eclipse depend on your time zone. Do's and Don'ts of Lunar Eclipse" Dos Until there is a lunar eclipse, tulsi leaves must be added to food products. Pray for the moon to be released from Rahu's control soon. Before and after the eclipse, take a holy bath to purify your body and spirit. Don'ts During a lunar eclipse, it is typically advised to stay inside and refrain from beginning any new projects or activities. Pregnant women are strictly forbidden from going outside during a lunar eclipse, cutting or sewing any fabric, carrying sharp tools like scissors or blades, or using knives, among other activities that could harm the unborn child. As per belief, people avoid consuming food. Avoid watching the eclipse with your naked eyes The events that happen during a total lunar eclipse are more complex and interesting than many people realize. The Moon's leading edge enters the pale outer fringe of Earth's shadow: the penumbra. You probably won't notice anything until the Moon is about halfway across the penumbra. 1. Watch for a slight darkening on the Moon's left side as seen from North America. The penumbral shading becomes stronger as the Moon moves deeper in. 2. The penumbra is the region where an astronaut standing on the Moon would see Earth covering only part of the Sun's face. 3. The Moon's leading edge enters the umbra, the cone of Earth's shadow within which the Sun's completely hidden. You should notice a dramatic darkening on the leading edge of the lunar disk. With a telescope, you can watch the edge of the umbra slowly engulfing one lunar feature after another, as the entire sky begins to grow darker. 4. The trailing edge of the Moon slips into the umbra for the beginning of total eclipse. But the Moon won't black out completely: It's sure to glow some shade of intense orange or red. 5. Why is this? The Earth's atmosphere scatters and bends (refracts) sunlight that skims its edges, diverting some of it onto the eclipsed Moon. If you were on the Moon during a lunar eclipse, you'd see the Sun hidden by a dark Earth rimmed with the reddish light of all the sunrises and sunsets ringing the world at that moment. 6. The red umbral glow can be quite different from one eclipse to the next. Two main factors affect its brightness and hue. The first is simply how deeply the Moon goes into the umbra as it passes through; the center of the umbra is darker than its edges. The other factor is the state of Earth's atmosphere. If a major volcanic eruption has recently polluted the stratosphere with thin global haze, a lunar eclipse can be dark red, ashen brown, or occasionally almost black. 7. In addition, blue light is refracted through Earth's clear, ozone-rich upper atmosphere above the thicker layers that produce the red sunrise-sunset colors. This ozone-blue light tints the Moon also, especially near the umbra's edge. You'll need binoculars or a telescope to see this effect. 8. As the Moon progresses along its orbit, events replay in reverse order. The Moon's edge re-emerges into the sunlight, ending totality and beginning a partial eclipse again. 9. When all of the Moon escapes the umbra, only the last, penumbral shading is left. Sometime later, nothing unusual remains. The event has five stages, each with different things to watch.(ANI)

Sundar Pichai gets a spot in Time's 2020 'influential' list and generous praise from Jamie Dimon

<ul><li>The US government’s Treasury and Commerce department are reportedly warding off a hacking attempt by the Russian hacker group known as <keyword id="4011681" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cozy-bear">Cozy Bear</keyword>. </li><li>This is only the latest in the long line of hacks that the state-sponsored group of cybercriminals have been linked to with respect to the US government. </li><li>Over the past six years, Cozy Bear has been behind at least five data breaches against the US government.</li></ul>The US government is currently in the midst of unravelling a sophisticated cyber attack that stretches back months. So far, data breaches at the US Treasury and Commerce departments have been recognised. But, the officials fear that other agencies within the government may also be vulnerable. Reuters initially reported the incident with sources claiming that the breach led to an emergency meeting of the National Security Council at the White House on December 12. A ‘foreign government’ had been able to break through and steal sensitive information. But, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/russian-government-spies-are-behind-a-broad-hacking-campaign-that-has-breached-us-agencies-and-a-top-cyber-firm/2020/12/13/d5a53b88-3d7d-11eb-9453-fc36ba051781_story.html">The Washington Post</a>, it wasn’t just any foreign government — it was the Russians. And, it was the same group of hackers who were able to breach through <a href="https://www.fireeye.com/blog/products-and-services/2020/12/fireeye-shares-details-of-recent-cyber-attack-actions-to-protect-community.html">FireEye</a>’s defences less than a week ago. In fact, the attack on the US government is only the latest in what is a long line of data theft campaigns led by a group of state-sponsored <keyword id="1768473" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russian-Hackers">Russian hackers</keyword> that go by the name of Cozy Bear or APT29. Who is Cozy Bear? According to cybersecurity firm <a href="https://securelist.com/the-cozyduke-apt/69731/">Kaspersky Lab</a>, Cozy Bear is a ‘precise attacker’. In addition to the US, the hacker group's targets also include government organisations and commercial entities in Germany, South Korea and Uzbekistan. During their past exploits, they have also been referred to as the Office Monkeys, CozyCar, The Dukes and CozyDuke. <div type="image" title="cozy bear targets" msid="79715581" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Cozy Bear aka CozyDuke&amp;#39;s targets across the world&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Russian hackers breach US defences thrice in two years This isn’t the first time that Cozy Bear has come after the US government. The first time they were caught was back in 2014, when the group launched a campaign targetting the White House and the Department of State. At the time the breach was dubbed the ‘<a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2015/03/10/politics/state-department-hack-worst-ever/">worst ever</a>’ hack on the US government. And, it took <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/three-months-later-state-department-hasnt-rooted-out-hackers-1424391453">over three months</a> for the authorities to clean out the system even though it was only the ‘unclassified’ email system that was breached. But, that was only the first many attacks that were to come. In another attack in 2015, Cozy Bear targetted the <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2015/08/06/russia-hacks-pentagon-computers-nbc-citing-sources.html">Pengaton’s email system</a>. It affected some 4,000 military and civilian personnel who worked for the highest-ranking officials — the Joints Chiefs of Staff — within the organisation. The same year, unknown to the public at the time, Cozy Bear was also hacking the Democratic National Committee (<a href="https://www.crowdstrike.com/blog/bears-midst-intrusion-democratic-national-committee/">DNC</a>), stealing passwords and other sensitive information. The post-2016 election phishing campaign Within hours of <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword> becoming the US president in 2016, five waves of phishing attacks were launched at US-based think tanks and non-governmental organisation (NGOs). And, again, Cozy Bear was allegedly <a href="https://www.volexity.com/blog/2016/11/09/powerduke-post-election-spear-phishing-campaigns-targeting-think-tanks-and-ngos/">at the centre of it</a>. A blast of emails was sent to people of important posts within national security, defence, international affairs, public policy and European and Asian studies. Cozy Bear’s second attack against the US government this year The year 2020 has seen an explosion in cybercriminal activity. And, Cozy Bear is no exception. Earlier this year in July, the Russian hackers’ group was <a href="https://www.nsa.gov/news-features/press-room/Article/2275378/nsa-teams-with-ncsc-cse-dhs-cisa-to-expose-russian-intelligence-services-target/">accused</a> by the National Security Agency (NSA), National Counterintelligence and Security Centre (NCSC) and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (<a href="https://cse-cst.gc.ca/en/media/2020-07-16">CSE</a>) of trying to steal data on COVID-19 vaccine and treatments that were being developed in the US, the UK, and Canda. Meet Cozy Bear — the Russian cyber espionage group allegedly behind US government data breach

Millions of Indians gained regular access to the internet for the first time over the past three years.</li><li>This is thanks to the "Jio effect," after regional mobile operator Reliance Jio launched extremely cheap data tariffs in 2016, costing as little as Rs 15 ($0.21) per GB.</li><li> Indians went from consuming an average of 700mb of data per month to 11GB, according to Counterpoint Research analyst Neil Shah.</li><li>This has led to unintended consequences like Indian music label T-Series overtaking YouTube star PewDiePie to become most-subscribed YouTube channel.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories</a>.</li></ul>The "Jio effect" is little known outside India, but it's already reshaping the way Silicon Valley does business. The phenomenon is named after the arrival of Reliance Jio, a mobile network operator that launched in 2016 with extremely cheap data plans. The network was founded by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, and the telco went from zero customers to becoming the biggest mobile operator in the world with more than 300 million subscribers. Jio's radical move was this: making 4G available to millions of Indians for free in 2016. It began charging nominal amounts for data in 2017 and, by then, the Indian appetite for internet content knew no bounds in part thanks to the availability of budget Android smartphones. Initially, Jio made no money, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/reliance-jio-and-reliance-retail-may-help-mukesh-ambani-rils-quarterly-earnings/articleshow/70274830.cms">but it has now become profitable</a>. "Jio has changed the consumption habits for hundreds of millions of consumers," said Neil Shah, an analyst at Counterpoint Research. "More people are using smartphones as their first device, unlike developed markets where the PC is the first device." Shah estimates that thanks to Jio's pricing, Indians have gone from consuming just 700MB of data per month to 11GB. This would let you watch about 30 episodes of "Game of Thrones." "You can get around 28GB of data for just a couple of dollars," says Shah. "And in that sense, once you have cheaper data and a smartphone, you're going to consume more content." <img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5c18187bad957159b36dd238-2400/2017-07-10t090713z1086661489rc1790fb7c60rtrmadp3reliance-jio-cyber.jpg" />Reuters Unlike the West, Indian smartphone adoption is still growing in the double digits as people buy their first internet-connected device. "More and more people are using smartphones as their first device, unlike developed markets where the PC is the first device," says Shah. This is significant. According to Pew Research, <a href="https://www.pewinternet.org/fact-sheet/mobile/">around 81% of Americans own a smartphone</a>, meaning there isn't much room to grow. The smartphone probably isn't their first internet-connected device either. Most consumers outside of India won't have really noticed what this means for the wider internet, but one incident really put the Jio effect on the map: this year's battle between Indian record label T-Series and Swedish vlogger PewDiePie to become most-subscribed YouTube channel. <img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5c58102070a61e40ba6b40b6-2000/pewdiepie.jpg" />Getty PewDiePie, also known as Felix Kjellberg. T-Series is a long-established Indian record label, producing music videos in various Indian languages as well as highly successful blockbuster films, all targeted at the home market. PewDiePie, by contrast, is a 29-year-old gaming vlogger and representative of a specific Western YouTube demographic - the self-referential, meme-loving, and occasionally offensive gamer. Up until March 2018, PewDiePie, real name Felix Kjellberg, was by the far the most popular YouTuber and inspiration for hundreds of other smaller creators who riffed off his offbeat humour and occasionally tasteless pranks. It has cemented its lead five months on, with 108 million subscribers versus PewDiePie's 98 million. Because cheap bandwidth is essentially unlimited, Indians are treating YouTube as their de facto streaming service, according to Shah. With access to the internet for the first time, they're turning to YouTube to find their favourite Indian language songs. "Most users have warmed up to YouTube to consume content, not just video, but music," he says. "They are going to YouTube rather than Spotify. People like T-Series or Star Network are seeing growth in video as well as music content." Neeraj Kalyan, president of T-Series, told Business Insider: "The recent growth of internet in India has increased the consumption of Indian content and, because of the decreased data costs, increase internet penetration, and higher bandwidth, this has been a real catalyst. "In 2016, there was mobile internet available in tier one or tier two cities, but now it's in tier three to tier five cities and villages, which had never experienced internet. So now the consumer is excited, and he's experimenting with everything, and it's resulted in an increase in consumption." It isn't just YouTube. India is now producing its own Silicon Valley-style internet giants, such as retail firm Flipkart - majority acquired by Walmart for $16 billion - online supermarket Grofers, payment firm Paytm, and Uber rival Ola. <img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5b519d774768008a308b45ef-1051/screen shot 2018-07-20 at 092450.png" />Stephen Lam/Reuters Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Silicon Valley is also feeling the impact of the Jio effect. Facebook, for example, began talking about the Jio effect indirectly in late 2016. The firm first mentioned the impact of cheap data in India on its Q3 2016 earnings call when CFO Dave Wehner said: "We're seeing the introduction of low price data plans in markets like India and Mexico contributing [to user growth]." Facebook would continue to talk about the impact of India's "promotional free data plans" on its user growth in every subsequent earnings call for a year. And the firm has described India as its biggest growth market in every quarter since Q3 2016, according to call transcripts analysed by Business Insider. Google is also playing nice with Jio. Its CEO Sundar Pichai attended the wedding of Akash Ambani, son of Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani, earlier this year. And the firm has been flagging the <a href="https://abc.xyz/investor/static/pdf/2017_Q1_Earnings_Transcript.pdf?cache=91f0790">massive growth in Indian Android users</a> since early 2017, not long after the launch of Reliance Jio. The firm said there more than 300 million new Android users from markets such as India and Brazil. <a href="https://abc.xyz/investor/static/pdf/2019_Q1_Earnings_Transcript.pdf?cache=ebdc584">At the beginning of this year</a>, the firm said India was the fastest-growing market for YouTube. How the 'Jio effect' brought millions of Indians online and is reshaping Silicon Valley and the internet

Put simply, China has started bailing out its banks. UBS estimates that between 2013 and 2015, China's banking sector disposed of somewhere between 1.65 and 1.8 trillion yuan ($248 to $270 billion) of bad loans and raised 620 billion yuan in capital - what UBS's Jason Bedford refers to as "underappreciated progress." But it still needs to dispose of a further 4.5 trillion yuan worth of bad loans, and raise another 2 trillion in capital.So there's still a long way to go for China's banks. And moreover, there's a disparity in how well banks in different geographical regions are able to raise capital and write off bad loans, which could be concerning. "We also note that progress across the country was asymmetrical," Bedford wrote, "with provinces with the weakest economic fundamentals recording the least progress in resolving issues." So, the economically weakest areas are the ones that could have the hardest time dealing with the problem. The map below shows the disparity. But, he adds, "it's a process," and at least the process has started in China.Another <a href="https://slack-files.com/files-pri-safe/T024ZHS95-F20S90VBQ/debtopia__reform_and_the_chinese_banks_-_ubs.pdf?c=1471012673-af0d868dd56f40ea7cc40534cd0fad4237aef73d">note from UBS</a> released today references Bedford's research, and remarks on how positive it is that the credit problem in China is increasingly being recognized and dealt with. The bank bailouts also signal some hope for reform in the country, the note says - other countries in the region, like Indonesia and India, with its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/india-goods-and-services-tax-impact-2016-8">likely passage of the goods and services tax</a> have been implementing reforms.However, the note says, this isn't enough to "turn bullish" on China just yet. The problem is that credit is still growing aggressively versus the economy, and until that changes, it's important to be wary.Bedford also mentions this in his research, saying that "the problem could be growing faster than the solution." If credit keeps growing at a "two or three times multiple of GDP growth," then the positive steps being taken could be outpaced by the growth of non-performing loans (NPLs).According to <a href="https://bmo.bmiresearch.com/article/view?article=1192030">research from BMI</a> that was released on August 10, China reports that its NPL ratio is approximately 1.8%. But BMI researchers estimate that the true ratio is closer to 20% and could even to as high as 30%.
