Indians are no longer looking for “best purchases and value buys under Rs 1,000”—at least not as much as before. <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s getting fancy, and how! From gold-flaked chocolates to swanky SUVs that look like they’re wheeled straight out of a Bollywood blockbuster, Indian companies are rapidly jazzing up their product lines, even faster than you can say the word "premiumization." But what does this mean for Indian companies and consumers? What is this jazz about premiumization all about? Is it just urban India that’s riding this wave, or has rural India also joined the bandwagon? We decode for you. <h2>What's premium, really?</h2>Imagine you’re eating Pav Bhaji at a roadside thela. Later during the day, you decide to dine out at a fancy, upmarket cafe, only to find Pav Bhaji Fondue on the menu. Same same, but much more expensive—often 5 to 10 times higher—for a little more hygiene and some better ambience! Think of premium products as this fondue. They are a notch up your regular, daily-use products soaps or shampoos, and even cars, all packaged luxuriously, offering just about the right touch of quality. The main differentiator, though, would be the price range. <h2>Driving home premium wellness</h2>A recent report by Nielsen suggests that over 70% of urban Indians are okay with paying a premium for their products. And companies are cashing in on this sentiment like never before. This explains why 58% of new products launched so far this year have been in the premium+ segment, as opposed to just 38% of new launches in regular, traditional trade. Take cars, for instance. Indians are no longer vying for a good old <keyword id="19950117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti" source="keywords">Maruti</keyword> 800 or <keyword id="20400567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="alto" source="keywords">Alto</keyword>, traditionally known for their healthy mileage, but are rather happy investing in more swanky features that come along with high-end cars. In October 2024, India’s largest car manufacturer, <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, sold 65,948 units of its compact cars like Swift, WagonR, Dzire, and more. Compared to the year-ago period, which saw sales of 80,662 units, this was an 18% dip. But take a look at their SUV (sport utility vehicle) sales for the same period. Cars like Brezza, Ertiga, and Grand Vitara sold about 70,644 units, a 19% uptick from the sales made in October 2023, i.e. 59,147 units. Simply put, when it comes to cars, Indians are saying the bigger, the better! The same is true for India's second biggest automobile manufacturer, Hyundai. Its SUV lineup made up a staggering 68.2% of the firm's total sales made for October 2024. What's more, SUV demand remained largely consistent across urban and rural markets. <h2>Consumers are inching up</h2>FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) are also riding the premiumization wave, with Indians prioritizing their health and wellness and not bothered about dishing out a few extra bucks for the same! You’ll find no dearth of words like organic, vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free, peppered generously over every product you’ll see today, be it soaps, juices, or more. No wonder then, sales from premium segments in 2024 make up around 27% of all FMCG sales and even contribute a massive 42% to the sector’s value growth in India. Nielsen report further adds that luxury brands that position themselves at twice the price of their category’s average are even witnessing stellar growth. In fact, for most FMCG brands like Tata Consumer Products, <keyword id="20002610" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-unilever" source="keywords">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> (HUL), Dabur, and Nestle, it is this premium segment that is growing much faster than their regular ones. And it's not just about daily-use products; Indians are also taking their celebrations a step over. Spirits manufacturer <keyword id="20125704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="radico-khaitan" source="keywords">Radico Khaitan</keyword> highlighted that for the first half of 2024, their prestige &amp; above segment made for 88.4% of its net sales value. In the same period, the regular popular segment accounted for just 9.1% of their net sales. From Hindustan Unilever, which saw its premium products grow 30% over the last quarter, to <keyword id="20521971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kingfisher" source="keywords">Kingfisher</keyword> beer's parent company, <keyword id="20124009" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-breweries" source="keywords">United Breweries</keyword>, whose premium product sales volume jumped by 27% during the quarter as opposed to just a 5% rise in overall volumes, everyone is seemingly taking their lifestyle a notch above. Per the Nielsen report, in 2024, a typical global consumer spends about $13.7k per year. This is set to grow by around 2.4% to $14k as early as next year. Even a report by Goldman Sachs also highlighted a similar trend, noting that India’s affluent class, or those earning over $10,000 (Rs 8,42,694.97), is set to reach 100 million in the next 3 years. And where will this consumer spend? On premium products! <h2>Online shopping shifts from mass to class</h2>Amazon’s Great Indian Shopping Festival, which was live between September 27 and October 29 this year, saw 140 crore customers, more than 85% of whom came from non-metro Indian cities. On the site, there was a 400% spike in sales in premium sales across categories like watches, fragrances, handbags, jewelry, and more. Rival <keyword id="19896939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart" source="keywords">Flipkart</keyword> noted a similar trend, recording 1.8x growth in premium beauty and personal care products during the first half of this year. <h2>Dialing in premiumness</h2>The Indian smartphone ecosystem has always been dominated by basic phones, or those entry- and mid-range phones that are priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 6,000. But that has changed in recent times, with premium smartphones (i.e., those priced over Rs 60,000) registering 20%+ growth in 2024. During the first quarter of this year, sales of mass phones (priced between Rs 10,000 and 20,000) reached 44%, compared to 51% in the year-ago period. But it's all sunny and shiny in the mid-premium (priced between Rs 40,000 and Rs 60,000) and super-premium segments (priced above Rs 60,000). Sales growth has burgeoned by as much as 27% and 86% in these categories, respectively. As India continues its march toward becoming the world's third-largest economy by 2027, the premium party is just getting started. Industry experts predict that premium segments will grow faster than you can say "sustainable organic handcrafted artisanal batch of coffee." So the next time you see someone dropping serious rupees on a fancy bottle of black water that also somehow plays music and tracks their hydration (yes, that's a thing), remember: This is just the trailer. Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Aisle are just a handful of the many dating apps that exist in India, usually free of cost, with an option for in-app purchases. As per <a href="https://www.statista.com/outlook/dmo/eservices/dating-services/online-dating/india#revenue">Statista</a>, most dating apps use a ‘freemium’ business model — some enticing basic services offered for free along with an upsell to more advanced, paid subscriptions. The revenue from dating apps in 2022 in India stood at $70 million, states Statista. But, are users willing to pay for these subscriptions? Sanjeev, a 30-year-old writer, believes that if dating apps were to set up blind dates or organize events for meeting people, he would pay for that but the current services don’t offer value for money. As he puts it, “Dating apps are charging for step 0 which has always been free.” <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="‘No point in paying for a connection’" comment="subhead2" text="‘No point in paying for a connection’">‘No point in paying for a connection’ </cmsannotation> While you can’t pay for love, most dating apps offer services that help improve your chances of getting a prospective match — an option for an unlimited number of swipes (Hinge), or a ‘spotlight’ version that will show your profile to more people (Bumble). Hinge also allows you to send a virtual rose and Bumble allows you to ‘superswipe’ on profiles that you like more than usual — but these features have to be purchased. As per the <a href="https://www.data.ai/en/go/identifying-mobile-apps-and-categories-defying-economic-downturn/">data.ai report </a>“Identifying mobile apps and categories defying economic downturn”, between H1 2022 and H2 2021 Bumble and Tinder were among the top 5 apps with the highest consumer spend. Business Standard also <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/technology/india-ranks-no-2-globally-in-the-number-of-apps-downloaded-after-china-123011301149_1.html">reported </a>that as per data.ai, Indian consumers spent $9.9 million up to December 2022 on dating and friendship apps to get unlimited swipes or enhance their profiles to get that perfect match. As Mohit Sharma*, 33, shared with Business Insider India, “The apps are made to extract some money. It’s business for the apps and hence you need to pay, that’s the structure. The real features only start after paying.” Mohit has used both Bumble and Hinge. 31-year-old Isha, who’s now out of the dating game but ‘religiously used’ Tinder for a period of two years, also believes that she would’ve paid for a more filtered list of prospective matches. However, she didn’t pay for any features when actually using the app. But 28-year-old Soumya Verma* sees no “point in paying extra for a connection. If it works, it works, no number of extra likes or superlikes can change that.” And 34-year-old Vivek Panwar, who actually found his wife on the dating platform Hinge, shared that though he may have paid for sending a private message to someone he really liked, he never spent money on the apps when he was using them. “I never paid for an app: maybe because there are too many fish in the sea and it never reached a desperate point,” said Panwar. However, it’s not always a case of desperation but at times, of need. There are certain features that are only available once you pay for them. For example, on Bumble if you want to see who’s already shown an interest in your profile before you’ve actually matched, you can pay to access the beeline. Similarly, on the dating app Aisle, users need to purchase invites to initiate communication with other users. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Can’t pay for authenticity" comment="subhead2" text="Can’t pay for authenticity">Can’t pay for authenticity</cmsannotation> Most users today are looking for authentic connections. Naturally, they can’t be paid for. As the dating platform Bumble revealed, “In 2023, chemistry, emotional intimacy, and intelligence are taking precedence over physical attractiveness for single Indians.” Verma also stated that it’s disappointing that “people still lie about their intentions. There is someone for everyone here, so be honest about what you’re looking for”. 45% of daters on Bumble too, are turned off by people who are not clear about their dating intentions. 28-year-old Agrima Sahore, who belongs to the LGBTQ+ community, also stated that she wasn’t sure if paying for a service would actually improve the overall pool or increase her chances of matching with more like-minded people. She even listed “misinformation, misrepresentation, lack of genuine effort, repeated conversations and forced small talk” among some of the disappointments of using a dating app. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Is the dinner date dead?" comment="subhead2" text="Is the dinner date dead?">Is the dinner date dead? </cmsannotation> For most people, monotonous conversations were the biggest pain point. This also explains why people are wary of stepping out for dinner dates — if they can’t find a connection while chatting, it’s hard to build one over an entire dinner date. “Singles are meeting for more than just dinner and drinks — opting for less traditional, more authentic and sometimes sober ways to get to know one another,” stated Tinder in its Year in Swipe Report 2022. As 27-year-old Ira Shukla, who used Hinge and Tinder sporadically for over a period of 7 years, puts it, “I’m not a fan of going for food and paying for the ambience. But when you are meeting someone new for the first time, it's not always easy to communicate this. So I used to choose a casual scene at home because it was cost-effective. Also, more comfortable.” Sharma also believes that “dinner dates are too formal” and require a lengthier time commitment, while for Soumya Verma, it’s a matter of safety. “I personally just find dinner dates a tad bit unsafe. So I prefer an early coffee, giving me room to scoot before it gets too late at night,” shared Verma. Panwar, on the other hand, believes that dinner dates are especially ineffective for people who are only looking for hookups. “I think people joined Tinder for hookups and dinner dates were a long shot, often ending in disappointment. However, he did not reveal the source or pay the tax due on that money until his death, according to the department. Siddhartha’s harassment charge at the tax department came at a time while his father-in-law SM Krishna is with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), that’s ruling at the centre and state. Telgi is better known for his $2.9 billion fake stamp paper scam, and was acquitted from it, <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/abdul-karim-telgi-acquitted-in-stamp-paper-scam-year-after-his-death-1987855.html">after his death, for lack of evidence</a>. The role and involvement of Siddhartha may remain unclear. The length of the arm between Chief Minister Krishna and his son-in-law in state matters may remain anybody’s guess. While the details of Siddhartha's political prowess may remain unknown, his achievements in business have been celebrated abundantly. Coffee estate to real estate India has always had coffee houses, in the big cities at least, where for decades thinkers, lovers, and revolutionaries have hung out. Privileged and benevolent Siddhartha not only built his own empire of coffee chains, real estate, financial services and logistics, he also supported entrepreneurs who went on to become icons in their own right. Infosys is a shining example, which went on to be the first poster boy of India’s IT revolution. However, the company didn’t have enough takers for its shares at the time of its IPO. Siddhartha, who was a stock broker in Bengaluru at the time, had underwritten those shares and bought them. He made a lot of money out of it but only because he knew their worth when no one else did. Whether it's a grand ceremony like a traditional Indian wedding or a small neighborhood get-together, drinking chai with your loved ones is a symbol of respect and togetherness in India. But its history is quite complex."Chai started out as a colonial conquest by the British, as they needed a place to grow tea outside of China since China held a monopoly on tea production," says Ayan Sanyal, a first-generation Indian American who co-founded the <a href="https://kolkatachai.co/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kolkata Chai Co.</a>, a cafe in New York City. "In the early 20th century, the British started a huge campaign to make tea popular amongst Indians. Tea vendors soon started adding their own ayurvedic spice blends to the tea and heavily mixing it with milk, inventing masala chai [a spice-added version of chai] as we know it."The British import mixed with local flavors became a smash hit and an Indian cultural export in its own right. Now, you can pick up a chai at nearly any coffee shop. But if you want to make your own at home, there are a few things to know first.<h2>The basics of chai</h2>While chai varies wildly from culture to culture, it breaks down into four main components: tea, spices, sweetener, and milk. You can customize each element to get the flavors, spice level, and sweetness you prefer.<h3>Tea</h3>Masala chai traditionally uses black tea, but you can use green tea, black tea, or whatever variety of tea leaves you have at home. You can also purchase special chai blends available online and at specialty grocery stores. There's no "standard" flavor palate for chai, because it will differ significantly based on the tea blend you use to prepare it. <h3>Spices</h3>The taste of your chai is also heavily determined by the type and amount of spices you use, and what combination of spices you include. Spices are what will help give it that unique woodsy and invigorating flavor and separate it from other tea preparations.According to Sanyal, some of the most common spices used in masala chai include cardamom, black pepper, ginger, lemongrass, mint, fennel, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. Each of these spices has different health benefits. While whole milk is traditional for chai, you can really use any milk you like. Switch it up with non-dairy milk like almond, oat, or soy, or make your chai a little lighter with skim. A very traditional variation of chai even uses buffalo milk. <h3>Sugar</h3>How much and what kind of sugar you use is entirely up to you and how sweet you want your chai.Start with 1 or 2 teaspoons of plain sugar - remember, chai is supposed to be sweet - and you adjust to your desired taste from there. Sanyal suggests experimenting with demerara or brown sugar, maple syrup, or honey if you're looking to try something new.Quick tip: One 8-ounce serving of chai contains about 25 milligrams of caffeine. Sanyal offers his technique for preparing chai below. <ol><li>Gather key ingredients. This includes your tea leaves, milk, your spice blend, your sweetener of choice, and water. You can also choose herbs like mint for a cooling effect and added flavor. </li><li>Simmer two cups of water on a stove or in a kettle. Wait for the water to boil.</li><li>Add your ingredients. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of tea leaves, 3 teaspoons of your spice blend, and other desired ingredients to the warm water.</li><li>Brew for 3 to 5 minutes with the heat still on. Two minutes is the ideal length but you can continue brewing until you find your ideal flavor. Generally, it takes 2 minutes for black tea and 3 minutes or more for milky tea to brew.</li><li>Add sweeteners and milk to taste. You can use whole milk, oat milk, almond milk, soy milk, or any kind you prefer. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of sugar or sweeteners based on how sweet you want your tea to be.</li><li>Let it boil and maintain a steady temperature. Most tea varieties will be ready within 2 to 4 minutes. You'll know the chai is ready based on the color. Masala chai will become brownish, while green tea may become golden or slightly green. True to their nature, they also picked a lot of winners who were able to gain business, funding along with publicity from screen time – that has helped many D2C brands in particular. Redseer Consulting, in a recently released report, has found that 27 startups that appeared on season 1 of the show secured funds from external investors. ”Most startups that appeared on the show secured deals 6 times greater in value from outside investors within a span of 1.5 years. Their current valuation is also 2.5 times greater than what they were valued on <keyword id="15913368" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank-season-1" source="Orion">Shark Tank season 1</keyword>,” said Kanishka Mohan, partner at Redseer Consulting. In season 1, as many as 117 pitches were made, out of which 65 of them accepted deals on the show, 20 rejected deals and 32 were not offered a deal at all. All these sections of startups, received a fair amount of interest from external investors. Six startups which were not offered a deal on the show like — On2Cook, Theka Coffee, Good Piggy Bank, Sabjikothi and Nushka were able to secure deals outside. “In all, most startups that appeared on the show fared well afterward, securing better deals and increasing valuations,” the consulting firm said. Who’s the biggest shark? As much as ₹100 crore was invested in startups that pitched their ideas on Shark Tank season 1 and 2 by eight sharks. And the shark with the most appetite is Aman Gupta, the founder of BoAt who invested ₹24.6 crore across 70 deals. He is followed closely by Peyush Bansal, the co-founder and CEO of Lenskart who invested ₹21.5 crore across 67 deals. The most active shark of season 1 who missed the second season is Ashneer Grover, the co-founder of BharatPe, who invested ₹5.3 crore in 21 deals. She recently left Paris and is getting ready to travel to India and beyond. She broke down her biggest spending categories for life abroad and her student debt. This as-told-to essay is based on an interview that has been edited for length and clarity.I got my undergrad degree at Anderson College in South Carolina. I graduated a semester early, in December 2019, and was going to do a big, two-month trip to Asia, but then COVID happened.At the time, I was already lined up for my first master's degree at Arcadia University in international peace and conflict resolution. I completed it virtually.Originally, I was having a hard time picking between a peace-studies program or a more traditional international-relations and diplomacy program. Then I found an opportunity to do both and get two master's degrees. It would only take three years instead of four for doing two separate degrees.When the opportunity came up to do my degree in Paris, I didn't hesitate. I grew up doing road trips with my parents around the US. I went to Uganda with a group from my church senior year in high school. and I did a semester abroad as well. I spent four and a half months living in the Middle East and that definitely taught me how to travel — how to do it confidently and safely.<h2>I jumped at the chance to move to Paris</h2><div type="image" title="Hayley in a friend's flat. " height="2049" width="1536" msid="102616843" hostid="261"></div>I moved to Paris in September 2021 and was there until June 2023 and completed my second master's degree. I was there on a student visa and I think I went to 11 or 12 European countries. Even though the finances were tight, travel was a priority.My first year in Paris it was a little bit quieter because it was still in the back half of COVID. I was living in the neighborhood that I wanted to live in: Marais. I had my regular cafe; I had my regular coffee shop. I'm on a first-name basis with my produce guy and my wine guy. And I really have this sort of community that I hadn't really experienced living in other cities like Philly or in Kalamazoo Shore.I had the same experience living in Jordan as I did in Europe. Despite, perhaps, the assumption that maybe the French aren't always kind or welcoming, people are so much more willing to be helpful. It just looks differently than it does when you grew up in a Midwest town, where everyone waves at everyone who drives by in their car.Definitely Paris is one of the most expensive cities to live in, especially in Europe, but I knew that going into it. I knew to expect sort of outrageous prices, particularly on rent. Rent is kind of crazy.My apartment was 17 square meters, or 183 square feet, and I paid 950 euros a month. I did have my own bathroom; I didn't have to share a toilet. In some of the older buildings, there's a toilet in the hallway and you just have a cubicle shower in the corner of your apartment. I was living in the 4th arrondissement, which is one of the most expensive parts of Paris.I definitely got lucky in terms of location and it had a washer, which was really important to me because, frankly, I am too cute to carry my laundry through Paris!I found the apartment on a website that connects owners to would-be renters. I rented from a man whose wife is Canadian, and she always prefers to rent to young women from North America, preferably students, because they're quiet; they're responsible. And I thought, "That is gonna be me!"<h2>I became a dog walker to cover some expenses</h2><div type="image" title="Hayley and her friends bought their food instead of going out. " height="4032" width="3024" msid="102616846" hostid="261"></div>My monthly expenses included 50 euros for internet and around 16 euros for my phone. With utilities, I paid my landlord directly and we split some of that cost.I was attending an American university in Paris, so I paid American tuition, which is just heartbreaking. I think my tuition was between $12,000 and $15,000 a semester, depending on how many courses I took.I used my student loans to pay for my accommodation, and for my tuition fees.I walked a dog every day and pretty much used my side-gig money as spending money to keep me alive. So groceries, matcha lattes, little treats, or renting bikes and scooters.I got around $20 to walk a couple's dog, for like an hour, which is like an outrageous amount of money to walk a dog! But he's an 85-pound boxer, so it was a bit of effort involved there. The owners are from the US and New Zealand, so sometimes I'd get paid in dollars through Venmo and other times it would be cash in euros. I'd also dog-sit for them when they went on big trips. I'd get paid more for that, but it wasn't a set fee. Sometimes they'd pay me by buying me tickets to the ballet or bringing back my favorite alcohol from Italy!I also had a position at my university as a social media intern for the school that paid 10 euros an hour, so around 350 to 400 euros a month.I was also a bike tour guide in Paris with a company. This started in May 2022. I got paid 60 euros per tour, or 20 euros per hour. My schedule was not consistent, but I averaged two tours a week during the school year and five a week over the summer.During my last semester, I got connected with an American family that recently moved to Paris. I worked with their 8-year-old daughter on her reading and math. Once a week, I'd pick her up from school and we'd spend about two hours together. I got 50 euros every time, so 25 euros an hour.My internship and bike-tour money was for bigger things, like travel and tattoos — I got 11 while living in Europe!I probably gave myself between 80 and 120 euros a week. The motto I lived on was "don't spend money" so I could do things that were important to me like traveling. I'd much rather save for a trip than blow my money at one night in a club. So I'd always cook with friends.I'm a vegetarian so I was basically living off produce and things like cheese, eggs, legumes, chickpeas, lentils — things like that. I had a one-pizza-a-week budget. I had a pizza place where they knew me really well. I'm also someone who likes a snack, so the little treats I would say were like a different category. And that was probably closer to like 20 euros a week.My spending went in phases: If I had a big trip coming up, I'd think, "Oh, I'm poor. I need to stop spending" versus when I'd think, "I'm in the semester, living my life." If I had 120 euros a week to spend and 50 went to groceries or things to sustain me, the other 70 was for fun. I'd probably say I spent between 35 and 40 euros on sitting at a cafe with friends.<h2>I have $131,000 in debt</h2>I got through undergrad with only $17,000 to $18,000 in student loans. My parents were really wonderful and helped put me and my brothers through school.Now I am $131,000 in debt, which is just such a large number to say out loud. That is from undergrad and two master's degrees. All things considered, it's really not that bad.If we're honest, the job positions that I'm looking at are entry level somewhere between $60,000 to $80,000 a year. So I'm looking at something that's going to make it possible for me to pay things off pretty quickly. Since I'm planning on going into public service, there's also loan-forgiveness opportunities for that: After 10 years in public service with consistent payments, all of the rest of my loans will be forgiven. I knew that going into the school and choosing to do two master's — knowing that I was headed for a career that was going to result in loan forgiveness.I could have taken out way less loans. But the priority for me was really just to enjoy the two years in Paris and to have the experiences that I felt like I wanted. For me, that meant taking out more loans so that I could live in the neighborhood that I wanted to live in. And then with any extra money, I was able to put that towards traveling and things like that.<h2>I'm heading to India with about $200 to my name</h2>I have been pretty much unemployed since May. I also have hardly any expenses if we're honest. Once I gave up my lease in May to a friend, I spent the month of June living in northern Spain with the couple who owns the dog that I walked. They invited me to spend the month with them. The most I was allowed to purchase was ice cream. They said they could afford to buy dinner because that's what their level of income looks like. They were so generous with me and I love them dearly. So, yeah, I spent two months in Europe just like schmoozing off of any friends who loved me at all.I had a decent amount of savings when I decided that I wanted to spend two months in Europe with no job. I had enough saved up to get me through the summer and figured it'd be fine. And, thankfully, I have parents who love me a lot and will let me crash with them for a few weeks. So I am only here in Michigan until August 13th and then I'm headed to Southeast Asia with like essentially $200 to my name.I am going to India for the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://y20india.in/">Y 20 conference</a>, the youth conference that precedes the G20. I'll be participating in an event called Talking Across Generations on Education, which is something put on by UNESCO's Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development. I'm so thrilled. Technically, I am attending with UNESCO's MGIEP and, as such, they are covering the costs of my transportation, accommodation and food while I am in India for the conference.But that event is only one day long, and in my mind I said, "Well if I'm going all the way to India for just one day, I'm not only gonna go to India for one day." So I asked them, "Well, wouldn't it be cheaper if it was a longer round trip?" To do a round trip from August 13 to 17 is like $3,000. But to go from August 13th to September 11th is only $1,700, but I never saw the final ticket price.I'm going to do a week in India, then I'm going to do a few days in Singapore, then a week and a half in Australia with friends. Then I'm meeting up with a friend in Vietnam and then staying with other friends in Thailand. And probably I'll have to help them paint their house. I think that's sort of the other half of the chocolate chip cookie rent.

 At that point, all Bhagat was armed with was the love for single serve <keyword id="3757117" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="coffee-capsules">coffee capsules</keyword> and his desire to start a company of his own. In November 2013, he got Tuhin Jain, an ex-Pepsi executive on board as the company’s COO. Both the co-founders realised that they had to get their technology in place before anything else and thus the first two years were entirely dedicated for the same. 
 
It was only in 2014 that the duo decided to test out the market and launched with two flavours. Today, they house 12 flavours. 
 
Needless to say, they were a big hit. Bonhomia soon became not only a category leader, when it came to premium single-serve coffee capsules, but also a category creator. 
 
Elaborating on the reason behind the success, Bhagat makes an interesting analogy. “Single serve consumption has done to coffee what internet has done to the world,” he says. 
 
What more, they have also brought to India the Nespresso-type experience of capsule beverages with individual coffee machines which are available on their website. 
 
 
 
 
“Bonhomia has redefined coffee consumption in India and our figures show that the trend is here to stay. We were the first people to launch single served capsules in the country. What’s special about our Indian angle is that the entire product portfolio is India sourced. All our coffees and teas are 100 pc Indian origins since India is the world largest producer of coffee and tea combined. Another Indian angle is that all our products are manufactured here locally in New Delhi, using state-of-art machinery and technology,” Bhagat further reiterates. 
 
Apart from measuring success in the form of an ever-increasing base of customers hungry for their products, the duo have also managed to raise USD 2 million in two tranches last year from a group of super angels including Kanwaljit Singh, Shripad Nadkarni, Apurva Salarpuria, Ashok Dhingra, Nita Mirchandani, Sarvesh Sahara , Ramrod Advisors, Gidwani family, Tolmolbol and Nitesh Kripalani. 
 
Bonhomia’s target audience, according to Jain are both, the older well-travelled consumers and also the younger generation who can’t do without their daily dose of coffee and will pay for quality coffee. 
 
At the moment, Bonhomia’s distribution presence has expanded to all major cities in the country and their capsules and brewing machines are widely available across outlets, such as Croma, Foodhall, Hypercity &amp; Nature’s Basket.

Ice cream and cold beverages, however, were one of the most affected industries. The industry was severely affected due to several country-wide lockdowns and closing down of consumer marketplaces. A viral rumour linking ice cream to increased COVID-19 risk made the matters worse. While the <a href="https://twitter.com/PIBMumbai/status/1255693276415475718">World Health Organisation</a> did step in to address the rumours, the damage was already done. After melting under lockdown woes and its cascading impacts for two years, ice cream brands have a reason to cheer this summer. Consumer companies are seeing high demand for ice cream and cold beverages as consumers look for some relief from the sweltering heat. A spokesperson for <keyword id="6376312" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mother-dairy" source="Orion">Mother Dairy</keyword> said that the company’s milk-based ice creams and dairy-based beverages have recorded over 50% growth in sales ‘on account of early summers and subsequent rise in temperatures, enhanced number of distribution assets coupled with the opening up of restaurants, offices, educational institutions, etc.’ The leading dairy company is optimistic that this summer, in its current progression, would likely add further momentum going ahead and is going to be ‘one of the best seasons for the ice cream and cold beverages industry.’ “This season, we are introducing 10 new variants of ice creams in order to keep our consumers excited and the highlight for this season is our shahi kulfi range wherein we are introducing four new royal Indian flavors namely Phirni, Paan, Malai and Pista. The offtake of dairy-based beverages is also being witnessed across all channels with thirst-quenching products such as chaach (buttermilk) and lassi (buttermilk) leading the pack,” said a company spokesperson. Milkshake and ice cream brand <keyword id="2972537" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="keventers" source="Orion">Keventers</keyword> also sees its biggest boom during the hot months of the year. Due to the early onset of summer, paired with intense heat waves across large parts of the country, Keventers’ co-founder Aman Arora said that the company clocked its ‘best sales’ in April this year. “We’ve seen a good jump in sales, and we’re hopeful this will continue. Our hottest products have been the cold coffees and chocolate milkshakes, but we are seeing some love when it comes to our newly launched ice creams as well. Our goal is to make Keventers something you enjoy year-round, not just during the summer,” said Arora. As restrictions on travel and social gatherings have been lifted, businesses have resumed across the country and people have started stepping out, out-of-home consumption of ice creams has also seen a small jump.
