The Maharashtra government has decided to further restrict the movement of people in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases in the state as in the rest of the country, most of which are the Omicron variant. Total cases in India surged by over 1.4 lakh in the last 24 hours. Out of these, 41,434 cases were from Maharashtra alone. On January 8, the government led by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that the assembly of five people or more will not be allowed even during the day i.e. from 5 a.m to 11 p.m. The night curfew has been further tightened to disallow people from stepping out of the home after 11 p.m except those delivering essential services. Not more than 50 people are allowed at weddings and other social gatherings, and not more than 20 at funerals and for last rites. Shopping malls must allow fully-vaccinated people up to 50% of their capacity and put up a display of the total number of customers inside. Similar restrictions apply for restaurants, and movie theatres as well. Schools and colleges will remain shut till February 15 and other public spaces like gyms, swimming pools, and beauty salons will remain shut and the government did not specify a reopening date for the latter set of services. All competitive exams, both at the level of the state and the Centre, where the dates have been announced will take place as scheduled. Hair cutting saloons can operate with 50% capacity and all the people working in such shops must be fully vaccinated. No city or district level sporting events are allowed to take place. National and international sporting events will continue as per schedule. Entertainment parks, zoos, museums, forts and other ticketed places will be closed. Maharashtra tightens COVID-19 restrictions as infections continue to spike ⁠— here’s all you need to know about the new guidelines

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that lockdown in the national capital is being extended for another seven days effective from May 10 till May 17 to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus in the state. Metro train services will be halted during the period, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday. He said although COVID-19 cases have come down in the last few days, but any slackness would squander the gains achieved so far in the current wave of the pandemic. The Delhi government had been forced to impose lockdown amid a steep rise in COVID-19 cases on April 20. Although, the cases have come down and positivity rate has reduced from the high of 35 per cent on April 26 to around 23 per cent now, but strictness is needed, he said. The lockdown scheduled to end at 5 am on Monday will now be extended up to May 17 morning. The chief minister also said that oxygen supply in Delhi has improved significantly in the last few days. Vaccination is also going on at a fast pace although there is lack of adequate vaccine stock, Kejriwal said. Delhi recorded 17,364 new COVID-19 cases and 332 deaths in the last 24 hours, pushing the overall tally to 13,10,231 confirmed cases. Delhi extends lockdown till May 17, more strict restrictions to be imposed

<ul><li>As India faces a second wave of COVID-19 restrictions, the trend of people refraining from unnecessary travel is already emerging.</li><li>Google’s latest Mobility Report shows that there’s a nationwide drop of 22% of people heading to shopping malls, cinemas, restaurants and cafes.</li><li>The most drastic dip is in the state of Maharashtra, which currently has the highest number of COVID-19 infections in the country, with a 39% dip in retail and recreation mobility.</li></ul>Cases of COVID-19 are beginning to spike for a second time in India and the worst-hit states are already seeing lockdown trends re-emerge. Fewer people are looking to go to restaurants, cafes, shopping malls and theatres, and are heading to supermarkets and pharmacies for necessities instead. Lockdown trends are starting to re-emerge as India faces second wave of COVID-19 infections

Owing to the rising cases of coronavirus, the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to put all urban areas under lockdown from 6 p.m. on Friday evening to 6 a.m. on Monday morning. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, talking to reporters on Thursday, said that he has reviewed the coronavirus situation in the state and has decided to place all urban areas under lockdown for two days from 6 p.m. on Friday evening to 6 a.m. on Monday morning. During this time, all the urban areas will be completely shut. The lockdown has already been clamped in 13 districts of the state on Sundays. Now the government has decided to do a 60-hour lockdown in all urban areas starting Friday. The state government a day earlier had announced a night curfew in all the cities of Madhya Pradesh. But after a record 4,043 corona cases were discovered on a single day on Wednesday, the government announced a Saturday-Sunday lockdown. The chief minister has appealed to all to wear mask, maintain social distancing and wash hands regularly.

He made the announcement on his social media handles on Tuesday after a meeting of the crisis management group which reviewed the <keyword id="8961954" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pandemic-situation">pandemic situation</keyword> in the state. "The lockdown has served the purpose of putting a check on coronavirus cases. Hence it would now be done away with, though a few restrictions will remain," the chief minister said. He, however, clarified that night curfew will be in place from 7 pm to 5 am. Kumar said private offices will be allowed to reopen and function with 50 per cent staff. Government offices, which have so far been functioning with 25 per cent staff strength, can do so with half of employees reporting on a day. Both government and private offices will be permitted to run till 4 pm. Shops, which had been allowed to remain open till 2 pm shall henceforth be required to down their shutters by 5 pm. Private vehicles would be permitted to ply and educational institutions could conduct online classes, Kumar added. The chief minister further said that the aforementioned restrictions will remain in place for another week after which the situation would be reviewed and further instructions might be issued. He also cautioned people against gathering in crowds. Complete lockdown was imposed on May 5 after the state was rattled by an explosive rise in COVID 19 incidence. More than half a million people have been infected since April while over 4,000 have died. In the past few weeks, however, there has been a marked decline in the number of people contracting the disease and fatalities. The second wave of infections in India has been bigger than the first, with daily cases crossing the 1 lakh mark (of which around 57% is from Maharashtra) including 513 deaths on May 4, forcing the state government to impose tighter restrictions. The night curfew will come into effect from 8 pm to 7 am in every district. Section 144 is being imposed during the day i.e more than five people at one place are prohibited to gather. The state will also go under weekend lockdown from Friday evening 8 pm to Monday 7 am. Here’s list of services/activities which are permitted or not by the state government during night curfew and weekend lockdown —<ol><li>Only essential services like medical shops will be open during the night curfew from 8 pm to 7 am, everything else will remain shut.</li><li>Public parks and playgrounds will be closed.</li><li>Movie theatres and drama theatres will not be functioning.</li><li>Commuters taking public transport like Mumbai’s local trains will have to strictly follow COVID-19 norms. One has to mandatorily wear a face mask and maintain social distancing.</li><li>Government offices will work at 50% capacity, rest of the employees will work from home except for staff on essential services duty like pandemic management.</li><li>Shoots of movies and serials are permitted to continue, but production houses need to avoid large gatherings at the location.</li><li>Markets are allowed to continue with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Construction work can also continue if there is an accommodation facility for workers.</li><li>Eating joints, bars and malls will have to close by 8 pm and there will be restrictions on the operations.</li><li>Salons, beauty parlours shall remain closed in the entire state.</li><li>Religious places like temples, mosques will have to strictly abide by the COVID-19 rules.</li><li>Transportation services like taxis, rickshaws or private vehicles will commute with 50% capacity during the day and are not allowed to travel during the night curfew.</li></ol>Maharashtra reported 57,000 new COVID-19 cases for the first time on Sunday, an alarming situation for the state. The order was initially imposed by the state government on April 18. Section 144 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) prohibits the gathering of more than 4 people at public places. Those who violate the rule can be booked or detained. Meanwhile, railway stations, bus stands and airports have been exempted from the order. The state government, last week, imposed a weekend curfew in the state starting from 7 p.m., on June 18 till 5 a.m., on June 21 due to a surge of COVID-19 cases in the city. However, the state government permitted resumption of activities in a graded manner to revive the businesses. On April 27, a <keyword id="9330088" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="statewide-lockdown">statewide lockdown</keyword> was imposed across <keyword id="6354780" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword>. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa imposed lockdown in 20 districts including the capital during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. The Karnataka government had imposed section 144 for 12 hours on New Year’s eve too, to avoid large gatherings at parties. <keyword id="2755451" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru-urban">Bengaluru Urban</keyword> recorded 1,470 new COVID-19 cases and 12 fatalities in the last 24 hours, pushing the overall tally to 11,98,158 positive cases and 15,319 deaths, so far. Religious places will have to follow the SoPs, Malik said, adding that that public transport system will remain functional. Mumbai city guardian minister Aslam Shaikh told reporters that work from home will be encouraged for offices, except for insurance, mediclaim, electricity and civic offices. Essential services have been exempted from the existing night curfew, he said.
