According to a report by Counterpoint Research, global 5G smartphone shipments recorded a 20% growth in the first six months of 2024 amid a decline in 5G smartphone prices. <h2>5G smartphone share crosses 50%</h2>For the first time, the share of 5G smartphones in the overall smartphone shipments crossed 50% in the first half of 2024. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113091114" title="Apple iPhone 16 to launch on September 9 – design, specs and everything we know so far" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> “5G handset shipments have been growing steadily and with the increased availability of 5G handsets in the budget segment, the emerging markets have witnessed high growth in this segment,” said Prachir Singh, senior analyst, Counterpoint Research. <h2>India emerges as the second biggest market for 5G smartphones</h2>India has emerged as the second biggest market for 5G smartphones behind <keyword id="19894886" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="China" source="keywords">China</keyword> in the first six months of 2024, overtaking the US. As per the report, strong shipment of 5G devices from Xiaomi, <keyword id="19897758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Samsung" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and Vivo, among other brands in the budget segment helped fuel the rise of 5G devices in the country. “Other emerging markets also witnessed high growth in 5G handsets. Consumers in emerging markets are looking at 5G handsets as an upgrade to their devices, even in the lower price segments,” Singh added. India recorded the highest growth in 5G smartphone shipments among the top five countries. India’s 5G smartphone shipments increased by 60% from H1 2023 to H1 2024. During the same period, China recorded a 14% growth, while the US recorded a mere 2% growth. Out of the total 5G smartphones shipped globally, 32% were shipped to China, followed by 13% each to India and the US. <h2>Apple leads 5G smartphone shipments</h2>With all of Apple’s smartphones being 5G enabled, the Cupertino tech giant leads the 5G race, accounting for over 25% of 5G smartphone shipments. Samsung comes in second with a 21% share. “ As the democratisation of 5G handsets increases with increasing 5G penetration in lower price segments as well as increasing expansion of 5G networks, this trend will further grow. The ongoing global premiumization trend will further fuel this growth. According to our market outlook, 5G share will cross 57% in 2024 and 65% in 2025,” said Tarun Pathak, research director, Counterpoint Research. India beats the US to emerge as the second-biggest market for 5G smartphones

According to an exchange filing, with a growing number of customers transitioning to 5G, Airtel is reallocating its mid-band spectrum to expand 5G services across the 1800, 2100, and 2300 MHz bands nationwide. The re-farming of the mid-band spectrum aims to provide customers with enhanced <keyword id="726530" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="browsing-speeds" source="Orion">browsing speeds</keyword> and improved <keyword id="2551158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indoor-coverage" source="Orion">indoor coverage</keyword>. As data demand escalates, Airtel is accelerating its spectrum re-farming efforts to deliver an exceptional 5G experience to its users. Randeep Sekhon, CTO of Bharti Airtel, remarked, "As more customers pivot to our 5G services, we have re-farmed our mid-band spectrum which was being used for 4G services. With this, we are also ready to launch Stand-alone technology. This will mean that the <keyword id="2365216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel-network" source="Orion">Airtel network</keyword> will be the first network in India to run on both stand-alone and non-standalone modes allowing us to deliver the best experience in the market." Airtel has successfully piloted the switch between standalone mode (SA) and non-standalone mode (NSA) modes on its 5G network in select circles, including Rewari, Chennai, and Bhubaneswar, with encouraging results. The minister highlighted this during his address at the Global Standards Symposium at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, one of the world's largest telecom events. He said, "In India alone, for example, 5G is anticipated to inject an astounding 450 billion dollars into the economy by 2040." The minister emphasized that 5G is not just about faster internet or low latency, but is laying the groundwork for <keyword id="20006420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-cities" source="keywords">smart cities</keyword>, advanced infrastructure, and autonomous innovations. Scindia further noted that 5G has already been rolled out across all 36 states and Union Territories, covering 98 per cent of districts and 80 per cent of the population in just 22 months. 5G to inject $450 billion into Indian economy by 2040: Telecom Minister Scindia

The announcement came on Monday as Jio revealed its quarterly results, showcasing staggering numbers and milestones achieved in various segments. As of March 2024, Jio boasts a subscriber base of 481.8 million, out of which 108 million subscribers are on Jio's True5G Standalone network. The number reflects Jio's stronghold in the Indian telecom market. According to a press release, the total traffic on the Jio network has reached 40.9 Exabytes, marking a 35.2 per cent year-on-year increase. This surge is attributed to the growing adoption of 5G and Home services. Notably, 28 per cent of the traffic comes from 5G subscribers, indicating a swift transition towards next-generation connectivity. Additionally, Jio's Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services have contributed significantly to the data traffic. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a dramatic 2.4x increase in annual data traffic, with per capita monthly data usage skyrocketing to 28.7 GB from just 13.3 GB three years ago. This surge underscores the growing reliance on digital connectivity in India. Commenting on the results, <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, expressed his satisfaction with the company's performance and its contribution to the Indian economy. He highlighted the significant achievements, including becoming the first Indian company to cross the Rs 100,000-crore threshold in pre-tax profits. Ambani said, "Initiatives across RIL's businesses have made a remarkable contribution towards fostering growth of various sectors of the Indian economy. It is heartening to note that alongside strengthening the national economy, all segments have posted a robust financial and operating performance. He reiterated Jio's commitment to strengthening the nation's digital infrastructure and its continued efforts to provide innovative solutions to consumers. The company's retail arm, Reliance Retail, also showed robust growth, with a 36 per cent increase in footfalls and strong digital commerce platforms offering a broad brand catalogue. "Reliance Retail continued to provide customers endless choices through its robust omni-channel presence. We continue to offer product differentiation and superior offline experience through stores remodelling and revamping of layouts. Our digital commerce platforms also provide newer solutions to users with a broad brand catalogue. Reliance Retail also works towards strengthening millions of merchants through its unique initiatives in new commerce space", said Ambani. In addition to its telecom and retail segments, Reliance Industries Limited has shown resilience in its Oil to Chemicals (O2C) segment, despite challenging market conditions. The KG-D6 block has achieved significant production milestones, accounting for 30 per cent of India's domestic gas production. Ambani emphasised, "Strong demand for fuels globally, and limited flexibility in refining system worldwide, supported margins and profitability of the O2C segment. Downstream chemical industry experienced increasingly challenging market conditions through the year." He added, "Despite headwinds, maintaining leading product positions and feedstock flexibility through our operating model that prioritises cost management, we delivered a resilient performance. The KG-D6 block has achieved 30 MMSCMD of production and now accounts for 30 per cent of India's domestic gas production." In terms of financial performance, Reliance Jio has achieved several remarkable milestones. The consolidated EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) at Rs 178,677 crore, while the consolidated Profit Before Tax (PBT) has surpassed Rs 100,000 crore. The company's market capitalization has crossed Rs 20,00,000 crore, further solidifying its position as one of India's most valuable companies. These contracts, which span a period of three years, are a crucial part of the company's Rs 55,000 crore capital expenditure (capex) plan. The investment will focus on expanding 4G coverage, launching 5G services, and meeting the growing demand for data in India. The debt-laden telecom operator announced the deal as it strives to regain market share in an increasingly competitive industry. Vodafone Idea has faced financial difficulties since its merger in 2018 between Vodafone Group's Indian arm and Aditya Birla Group's Idea Cellular. The Rs 30,000 crore deal with Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung is expected to provide Vodafone Idea with the necessary equipment to expand its 4G coverage from 1.03 billion to 1.2 billion people, as well as initiate the rollout of 5G services in key markets. The company confirmed that supplies under the new contract would begin arriving in the next quarter. In a statement, Vodafone Idea said that its primary goal is to enhance 4G connectivity across India while simultaneously preparing to introduce 5G technology. ""Vodafone Idea has concluded a mega, about USD 3.6 billion (around Rs 300 billion), deal with Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung for supply of network equipment over a period of three years. The capex programme is directed towards expanding the 4G population coverage from 1.03 billion to 1.2 billion, launching 5G in key markets and capacity expansion in line with data growth," the company said in a statement. Vodafone Idea seals Rs 30,000 crore deal with Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung for 4G and 5G expansion

State-owned <keyword id="19970536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSNL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> will start rolling out <keyword id="21279641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G-services" source="keywords">4G services</keyword> across the country from August, using completely indigenous technology in line with the government's "Atmanirbhar" policy, according to official sources. BSNL officials claimed to have recorded peak speed of 40-45 megabit per second on the 4G network which has been rolled out in the premium spectrum band of 700 megahertz (Mhz) as well as in 2,100 Mhz band during the pilot phase. The company has rolled out 4G services in Punjab using indigenously developed technology by IT company TCS and state-run telecom research organisation C-DoT-led consortium and onboarded around 8 lakh subscribers. "The 4G core developed by C-DoT is performing very well in the BSNL network in Punjab. It was installed in July last year. It takes 12 month to prove the success of such complex technology but the C-DoT core has stabilised within 10 months. BSNL will launch atmanirbhar 4G technology across the country in August," a senior government official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI. The core network is a collection of network hardware, devices, and software that provides fundamental services in a telecommunication network. Telecom regulator <keyword id="19942079" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Trai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Trai">Trai</keyword> in a recent paper explained core as part of a network that offers the functionality of aggregation, call control, switching, authentication, charging, gateway functionality, etc. TCS, Tejas Networks and government-owned ITI have bagged orders worth about Rs 19,000 crore from BSNL for deploying 4G network which is upgradable to 5G. In a recent earnings call, Tejas Networks Executive Director and chief operating officer Arnob Roy said BSNL's mobile network is getting deployed across zones. He said that wherever the C-DOT core is not available on the BSNL network, the equipment is getting integrated to the existing core. "When the C-DOT core gets deployed in those circles, in those zones, they will get parented to the C-DOT core as well. Tejas Networks Limited. This is just a temporary situation where the RAN (radio access network) is deployed and in that zone, the core is not available," Roy said. BSNL is in the process of deploying 1.12 lakh towers for 4G and <keyword id="20041753" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-services" source="keywords">5G services</keyword> across India. "The company has installed over 9,000 towers for 4G service across the country, out of which more than 6,000 are active in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, UP West and Haryana circle. BSNL has been selling 4G capable SIM only for the last 4-5 years. Only those customers who have older SIM will need to get new SIM to experience the service," a BSNL official said. Although it did not divulge the size of the deal, market watchers say that at BT's valuation of roughly USD 15 billion dollars, the deal could be in the ballpark of USD 4 billion. The shares will be purchased through Bharti Televentures UK, which is wholly-owned by Bharti Global. But it's taken multiple Olympics over six years for the technology to reach new heights.Here's how 5G capabilities have progressed at the Olympic Games since 2018, starting with a small trial at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and expanding to today's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-summer-olympics-2024">Games</a>-wide connectivity experience.<h2 id="47d86205-2395-4901-b982-649d55ca59a0">Pyeongchang Winter Olympics 2018</h2>For the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, KT, formerly Korea Telecom, ran 5G-network trials to showcase how the technology could be used.The trials included Sync View, a small camera that provided real-time athlete viewpoints, and Hologram Live, which broadcast press conferences live and in hologram form. There was also a 360-degree virtual-reality system that let visitors put on a headset and be immersed in other venues.Another trial feature, Time Slice, allowed viewers at home to watch events from multiple angles. The demonstrations highlighted the potential of 5G for high-speed, low-latency applications in broadcasting and immersive experiences.The trials in Pyeongchang were limited by necessity: 5G was still a nascent technology. Widespread adoption of end-user 5G didn't start until <a target="_blank" href="https://www.statista.com/chart/9604/5g-subscription-forecast/">a year after the 2018 Games</a>, but organizers saw the opportunity and chose to trial it.<h2 id="7012baa5-1224-4c03-aa1b-446d08caeb95">Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020</h2>The delayed Tokyo Olympics, which took place in 2021 because of the coronavirus, included a slew of 5G innovations.Golf-tournament attendees could rent devices to watch live footage of players who were at different holes from where they were, which provided a new level of access.For the sailing competition, a 50-foot floating screen in the harbor broadcast footage of the event via a drone and 5G technology, bringing a historically hard-to-see sport closer to viewers. At the swimming pool, attendees could use a 5G-enabled augmented-reality app to learn more about the competitors in front of them.All those innovations were made possible by the collaboration between the tech giant Intel and its Japanese partner NTT Docomo. The companies jointly developed the 5G network at what organizers called "the most innovative Olympic Games ever."Indeed, the Tokyo Games saw a significant step forward in 5G adoption because of Japan's advanced tech use. But it would still take time for it to be adopted more widely.<h2 id="5aebc8e4-2aa2-4ac4-81ed-cc52bc14ff84">Beijing Winter Olympics 2022</h2>China has long been an innovator of mobile technology, and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing proved no exception.Each Olympic venue had a full 5G network available to use, a first for the global competition. The technology was used at all sporting events, allowing for much deeper integration with TV broadcasting. Mario Reis, the director of telecommunications at the Olympic Broadcasting Services, said at the time that advancement in 5G enabled it to be trusted enough for deployment as a backbone technology for the Games' coverage.Intel once again partnered with a company from the host country, China Unicom, to roll out 5G capabilities. This was a boon given the more-remote nature of the Games, which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic.The ability for athletes to keep in touch with their families using 5G — which allows for faster, higher-resolution video calls — likely helped ease the challenges of performing at an event where movement and interaction were limited.<h2 id="3feb3546-b3f6-4ab4-b0bc-ac1cde6869bf">Paris Summer Olympics 2024</h2>Unlike previous Games, where organizers have sought to assign network responsibilities across a number of providers, the Paris Olympic organizers hired Orange as the sole provider to oversee 5G."It's a very impressive deployment that we are doing to enhance coverage," Bertrand Rojat, the chief marketing and innovation officer at Orange, told BI.The telecom giant's plans include a massive private 5G network to provide capacity across 32 sports and 120 official sites across the city. The organizers said that 12,000 screens, 8,000 WiFi terminals, and 13,000 computers are all connected by nearly 250,000 miles of fiber-optic cable, which will transmit the Games from the stadiums.The ability to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/network-slicing-5g-more-effective-risks-2023-11">use network slicing</a>, where a 5G network's total capacity is divided up and earmarked for specific uses, means the Olympic Broadcasting Services, which streams footage of the events, is expected to have minimal issues. If network slicing weren't in place, periods of peak usage by Games attendees could take up the capacity needed to power broadcasts.It's a significant test of the network but one that Rojat believes Orange is well prepared to handle."We're quite confident," he told BI, "although you can never commit 100%."

How 5G connectivity has evolved at the Olympic Games

Birla, chairman of Aditya Birla group, which is one of the shareholders of the troubled telco VIL, was speaking at the inaugural session of India Mobile Congress. "In the coming quarters, Vodafone Idea will initiate significant investments in order to roll out 5G networks and further expand 4G coverage across the country. Moreover, the company is determined to realise the government's vision of establishing a robust supply chain in critical and emerging areas, including Open RAN (Radio Access Network)," he said. Further, Birla said this endeavour will enable innovative Indian companies to design both hardware and software for the global markets. The sanctions are part of efforts to restrict Huawei's technological capabilities, especially in areas like 5G and AI. "AI accelerators, like the one that these chips fueled, are at the forefront of our technology race with the CCP, and I fear the damage done here will have significant consequences for our national security," Moolenaar added. "Congress needs immediate answers from both BIS and TSMC about the scope and volume of this disaster. The US government must take immediate steps to ensure this does not happen again."TSMC, Huawei, and the Commerce Department did not immediately respond to Business Insider's requests for comments.TSMC told Bloomberg that it stopped all shipments to Huawei after September 15, 2020. It declined to comment on the reports that its chips had ended up in Huawei products. "TSMC is a law-abiding company, and we are committed to complying with all applicable rules and regulations, including applicable export controls," TSMC said in its emailed statement to Bloomberg. "We proactively communicated with the US Commerce Department regarding the matter in the report. We are not aware of TSMC being the subject of any investigation at this time."<h2 id="fe26c08e-cd2e-4e3d-a477-f5211b02bcea">A 'shadow network' of chips</h2>The report adds to US concerns that Huawei is potentially obtaining advanced chips despite being blacklisted since 2020. A US semiconductor association <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-08-23/huawei-building-secret-chip-plants-in-china-to-bypass-us-sanctions-group-warns">warned last year</a> that Huawei was building a shadow manufacturing network.Min-yen Chiang, a researcher who focuses on the political economy of semiconductors, told Business Insider the development raises the question of opacity surrounding Huawei's "shadow network" of chips, including how big the web is and the nature of the network.He said public information suggests TSMC has been closely following export controls, but Huawei's network needs to be better understood to improve due diligence."If it remains unclear, what happened with TSMC could happen to other chip manufacturers as they wouldn't know if the chips that they sell would be resold to Huawei," Chiang said. <h2 id="22ca6e98-7cd9-45ff-b108-05b66813c717">Supply chain issues</h2>The situation could also have other implications, including distrust about TSMC's supply chain and more intense regulatory scrutiny, analysts said.
