<ul><li>India slipped ten places in the <keyword id="2040615" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Competitiveness-Index">Global Competitiveness Index</keyword>, ranking at 68.</li><li>The country’s ICT technology innovation capacity is growing but isn’t backed by investment in human capital.</li><li>India’s overall score is relatively stable but countries ranked near India demonstrated more growth.</li></ul>Getting more people online has been the goal of the current Indian government since its rise to power. Fall in the price of 3G and 4G data has also made it more affordable for people to connect to the internet. Despite these strides, India fell 10 places in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) <a href="http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_TheGlobalCompetitivenessReport2019.pdf">Global Competitiveness Index</a>, ranking at 68. India’s slip in the rankings is only partially because of the fall in its score — a drop of 0.7 points. The report notes that a greater factor may have been because other countries — which were previously ranked lower on the Global Competitiveness Index — have shown faster improvement, especially when it comes to the adoption of information and technology. India has improved significantly since 2017, but information and communication technology (ICT) continues to remain a challenge due to underlying factors like women participation in the workforce and weak workers’ policies. India and other emerging economies are also showing signs of stagnation and slowdown since their growth has largely been ‘anaemic’ — or unequal. India’s mixed results More ICT means more innovation, according to the WEF. In order to deal with the growth of their innovation capacity, emerging economies — like China, India and Brazil — need to strengthen their skills and labour market. Technological integration is good on paper. But, without human capital investment, it remains largely inadequate. India performed well in terms of innovation, ranking 35th in the world. But, it falls short when it comes to other foundational enablers of competitiveness on the Global Competitiveness Index. The one thing that does work in India’s favour is its market size. Even its financial sector ranks better than most other countries despite the high delinquency rate — that’s not to say that the banking system has not weakened. On the other hand, India ranks as low as 107th when it comes to skills, and is at 101th in terms of product market efficiency. The country’s labour market needs transformation in order to protect its workers and also encourage female participation in the world place — which is abysmally low at a rank of 128 — according to the WEF. This is also reflected the level of inequality in India. Income share of the top 10% in the country is higher than levels seen in the US, China and even Russia. India’s progress was good — Others were better The East Asia and Pacific region is the most competitive in the world. Countries like Singapore, Japan and Taiwan lead the charge on the rest of the world. In fact, Singapore holds the highest rank on the Global Competitive Index. But India lags woefully behind, according to the WEF. Countries ranked near India all show small, but significant improvements in their score. Vietnam, for instance, is ranked 67 and moved up 10 places in the index showing 3.5 points of improvement. Azerbaijan made an even greater jump of 11 places even though its competitive score only increased by 2.7 points to rank at 58. Turkey was able to maintain its rank at 61 but only because its performance improved by 0.5 points. One of the reasons for its improved competitiveness is the diffusion of the Internet across the country. Turkey’s also has more women participating in the workforce and has strengthened workers’ rights. Colombia, 57th on the Global Competitive Index, moved up three places brushing up its score by 1.1 points. India vs BRICS Among the BRICS nations, China is the best performer, maintaining its 28th position and outranking the Russian Federation at 43. That’s 40 places and 14 points ahead of India on the Global Competitive Index. China’s performance is almost at par with OECD standards. In fact, its ICT adoption outperforms all 25 of the OECD countries. South Africa, also moved up 7 places in the Global Competitive Index with a score improvement of 1.7 points ranking at 60. The only BRICS nation to rank lower than India is Brazil at 71. India falls 10 places in Global Competitive Index as others race ahead in technology

OYO Workspaces forays into Chennai with Innov8, Workflo

New Delhi, Dec 15 () Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan asked engineering students on Sunday to move away from the "traditional notions of success" and focus on entrepreneurship, saying no country can grow without the support of innovation.
Promoting entrepreneurship is a key objective of the BJP government at the Centre, he said during an interaction with students during the 72nd Annual Session of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers at IIT-Delhi.
Pradhan, who holds the portfolios of Steel Ministry and Petroleum and Natural Gas, said India has ample intellectual capacity to solve challenges and IITs are pride of the country.
He said the premier institutes are "breeding grounds" for academic excellence.
According to an official statement, the minister motivated the students to move away from traditional notions of success and become entrepreneurs to create a better future for themselves and for the country.
"No economy can grow by leaps and bounds without the support of innovation driven by its scientific community," Pradhan said, calling for a greater synergy between academia, industry and policy-makers to drive innovation.
"Oil and Gas PSUs have set up a fund of Rs 300 crore to support start-ups. I have even advised PSU companies to support innovation and entrepreneurship by employees... India is moving towards a knowledge-based economy and soon it will be at the centre of global innovation," he said.
India is a "nation of aspirations and our scientific community must contribute towards realising aspirations of our youth," he added. ABI ABH

Pradhan asks students to focus on entrepreneurship

New Delhi, Jan 22 () South Korean consumer electronics major Samsung is betting on India's small towns and rural areas to consolidate its position as the leader in the country's refrigerator market, a senior company official said on Wednesday.
 The company, which on Wednesday introduced its 2020 refrigerator line up for India, including one that can prepare curd, is banking on innovations and hiked capacity in entry level refrigerators to increase its overall market share to 35 per cent this year from 33.9 per cent last year.
 "We find that there is a lot of opportunity to be present in the addressable market (in India) with low penetration (of refrigerators) in tier III and tier IV (markets)," Samsung India Senior Vice President, Consumer Electronics Business, Raju Pullan told .
 The overall penetration of refrigerators in India is 33 per cent and frost free penetration will be at about 18-20 per cent, he added.
 In its 2020 line up, Samsung has introduced five-star rated direct cool single door refrigerator with new 2020 energy norms with capacity increased to 198 litres from 192 litres earlier. The line up is priced between Rs 17,990 to Rs 45,990.
 "For the first time ever Samsung's launch (in India) is in frost free and also in direct cool refrigerators with innovations and capacity. That's what consumers there want. The first thing that a consumer in tier II, III and IV wants is the capacity," he said.
 Convenience, storage space and energy efficiency are the key features consumers look for in a refrigerator and Samsung's 2020 range addresses all these needs, he said, adding that the new range of refrigerators would further strengthen its market leadership.
 "We want to expand the market. Therefore we find a very large scope because of the very low penetration to drive this segment of products," Pullan said.
 Claiming that Samsung became the number one in overall refrigerator market in India in the second half of last year, he said, "Our intent this year is to consolidate and take a dominant leadership position in the refrigerator category."
 As per industry estimates, the Indian refrigerator market is valued at around Rs 21,000 crore with LG, Whirlpool, Godrej and Haier the other players in the top five.
 "Our objective (for 2020) is that from the current 33.9 per cent market share, with these new launches we move up to 35 per cent," Pullan said, adding that the company is looking at 32 per cent market share in direct cool segment from 28 per cent at present.
 In frost free, he said Samsung is targeting 45 per cent market share, up from 42.6 per cent currently, while the target in side-by-side segment is 50 per cent, up from 48.3 per cent at present, he said. RKL RVK

Okinawa Autotech opens second plant in India, to manufacture 10 lakh EVs per year by 2024

By Yoshita Singh United Nations, Jul 11 () India and Japan at the UN have said that a strengthened cooperation in science, technology and innovation is key to accelerating the collective response to the COVID-19 pandemic which has infected over 12 million people and killed more than 560,000 globally. Scientific Secretary, Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Indian government Dr Arabinda Mitra, delivering a joint statement at a session on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) here on Friday, said that Japan and India organised a series of bilateral and multi-stakeholder meetings last month. "We believe that a strengthened STI cooperation is key to accelerating our collective response to COVID-19, as well as to achieving the human security, by building on the foundations for inclusive and sustainable development," Mitra said on behalf of Japan and India at the 2020 High-Level Political Forum session STI. As the members of the global pilot programme on STI for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) roadmaps, the two countries organised the meetings. Japan and India offer to extend their collaboration in applying frontier technologies in several SDG areas, including to collaborate with the UN Interagency Task Team on STI… in supporting pilot countries from Africa and other countries in the region, in formulating and implementing their STI for SDGs roadmaps, he said. Mitra said this will be enabled by sharing of experience, knowledge and capacities in the spirit of South-South and Triangular Cooperation. India and Japan also reaffirm that STI for SDGs roadmaps is a valuable working tool to strengthen national efforts on mapping and international cooperation on knowledge sharing, technology transfer, capacity-building, governance, networks and finance for countries to better address global challenges including those posed by the COVID-19 pandemic by ensuring access, equity and inclusion. New Delhi and Tokyo call for enhanced multi-stakeholder partnerships by launching "Partnership in Action" and leveraging more dedicated and diversified financing resources, he said. "We further commit to work together to foster closer scientific and technological collaborations by integrating research (knowledge creation), with education (knowledge dissemination) and innovation (knowledge application)," Mitra said. India has played an important role in the negotiations for introduction of a UN driven Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM), as an inclusive and equitable tool for SDG delivery based on affordable, accessible and available technological innovation, he said. The global pilot programme on STI is inspired by the collective commitment of both the Japanese and Indian governments in harnessing the prowess of Science and Technology for promoting inclusive development, keeping in mind the needs and aspirations of people and towards delivery of a larger global good through building international partnerships, Mitra said. A global pilot programme on STI for SDGs roadmaps was announced during the high-level political forum last year, focusing on five pilot countries: Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, India and Serbia. Sources said that Japan and India, taking forward their close partnership in the area of science and technology, have agreed to extend their collaboration to the area of SDGs through the programme. The two countries have decided to leverage the Society 5.0 Plan of Japan and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) for All strategy of the Indian government to share the best practices that address the resolution of social problems through the application of technology. The noted computer scientist <keyword id="3310065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anandan-Padmanabhan">Anandan Padmanabhan</keyword> has been brought on Adobe’s board, to head its big data experience lab in Bengaluru in the capacity of vice president, Adobe Research. 
 
Padmanabhan, who was earlier the MD (research outreach) at Microsoft, will now lead Adobe’s big data research initiatives in Bengaluru, including data mining, machine learning, social network analysis, mobile experience and content intelligence technologies. All these areas are big focus zones for Adobe, charting the new frontiers of its growth. 
 
"Adobe has always been at the forefront of cutting edge technology innovations, and our Research Labs in India have been instrumental in developing product innovations that are today driving the company's growth worldwide. <ul><li>India’s human capital has the highest score on the Innovation Index published by <keyword id="2665691" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Niti-Aayog">NITI Aayog</keyword>.</li><li>But, it also has the highest disparity of all the indicators with scores of states and UTs within India fluctuating between 8.98 to 74.96.</li><li>There’s also a paradoxical disparity between human capital and the number of people employed in ‘knowledge-intensive’ activities.</li></ul>India’s Innovation Index ranks the country and its states on five enabling pillars. Of those pillars, human capital has the highest score hitting 32. Even though this means that India has the ability to provide quality education and research capabilities to its workforce, not all states are doing equally well. In fact, the human capital pillar is also has the most disparity on the index with scores fluctuating from 8.98 to 74.96.

 Innovation disparity among states Southern states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka topped the index while Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar came in last. According to NITI Aayog’s <keyword id="4131506" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="india-innovation-index">India Innovation Index</keyword> report, this shows that the lower ranking states are in need of more investment to improve their education system.  The report’s findings show that the smaller and richer the state, the better it is at producing human capital. Income has a strong correlation because it implies that a state has more resources to devote towards building up its workforce. Size, on the other hand, means that it’s easier to manage administration and focus on smaller regions. Union territories and city states shine Chandigarh, Puducherry and Delhi lead when it comes to UTs and city states. In fact, they even outperform the Tamil Nadu — the highest performing state. According to NITI Aayog, this is because these regions have a higher availability of educational institutions and researchers. Addressing the paradox Even though India’s ranks high when it comes to human capital, it doesn’t do as well when it comes to knowledge workers — another enabling pillar of the Innovation Index. This means that even though India is producing a high number of graduates, they’re not being employed in ‘knowledge-intensive’ activities. The Innovation Index also found that India has a serious lack of research and development (R&amp;D) workers per million, The disparity indicates one of two things. Either, India’s graduates aren’t employable or the employment opportunities are scarce to begin with. “Further study is required to understand the situation better,” stated the report. But, India’s Innovation Index findings were run past a committee to figure out how to improve the country’s innovative capacity. When it comes to human capital, they highlighted two main challenges. One, the education isn’t industry oriented so low employability is an issue. More often than not, industries normally have to take it upon themselves to train new recruits. Second of all, the Indian education system focuses on quantity rather than quality. The committee recommends more coordination between industry players and education institutions to design a better syllabus. It also recommends improving the quality of education imparted by professors and giving them more time to focus on their own research. The challenges identified need to addressed a policy level. It also shows for the innovation ecosystem in India holds room for improvement.

New Delhi, Jul 1 () Social media giant Facebook is deeply committed to investing in and nurturing India's digital economy, with a particular focus on helping small businesses, its India Managing Director Ajit Mohan said on Wednesday. "Facebook as a company is deeply committed to investing in and nurturing India's digital economy, with a particular focus on helping small businesses, helping the agenda of job creation. And, our commitment is to work with other players in the ecosystem to see how we can create material impact," Mohan said while speaking at a CII event. He added that the company intends to be an "ally" to India as the country goes through this "exciting economic and social transformation" with a particular focus on building tech capacity and local infrastructure that can accelerate the country's transformation agenda. Mohan highlighted that India has seen an acceleration in adoption of digital faster than any country in the world, and new technologies will continue to play a very defining role in shaping the future of the country. "New technologies can fundamentally change the course of industries and our lives and imagining that next decade...the role of new technologies really means thinking about new ways in which we can build capacity in India... It means improving our global competence in an interconnected world," he said. New Delhi, July 6 () Nokia on Monday said its software products are powering Bharti Airtel's Voice over LTE (VoLTE) network in India. As part of its 'cloudification strategy', Airtel will deploy Nokia's CloudBand Infrastructure Software. The network supports over 110 million customers, which makes it "the largest cloud-based VoLTE network in India and the largest Nokia-run VoLTE in the world," a statement by Nokia said. Airtel has deployed India's largest open cloud-based VoLTE network with Nokia software products, the statement said adding the cloud-based VoLTE deployment allows Airtel to provide its mobile customers faster and more reliable, cost-efficient call connectivity. The solution, which will cover all 22 telecom service areas in India, uses commercial 'Off-the-Shelf' IT hardware with cloud-based Virtual Network Functions (VNFs), consuming much less power and space compared to the traditional 2G/3G Circuit Switched legacy core, it said. The solution enables Airtel to free up spectrum by ramping down its 3G network, allowing the operator to use the freed up radiowaves to deploy 4G/LTE services for better speed and capacity. As part of its cloudification strategy, Airtel will also deploy Nokia's CloudBand Infrastructure Software with the aim to create new revenue opportunities for 5G and internet-connected devices, it said. CloudBand will enable Airtel to lay the foundation for 5G networks and deliver new digital services with greater agility and ensure a reliable and high-performing network for delivering improved customer experience. "CloudBand is an open, scalable, flexible platform that will allow Airtel to adapt network capacity in accordance with changing consumption patterns in real-time and in a cost-efficient manner," the statement added. Randeep Sekhon, CTO of Bharti Airtel, said, "The country's largest open cloud-based VoLTE network is a major milestone in Airtel's journey. Our objective is to reap the benefits of cloud solutions to simplify our architecture and enable faster delivery of innovative services, ultimately delivering an enhanced customer experience."
