While waiting for an imminent turnaround in the industry, Patanjali Keswani, the founder and chairman of Lemon Tree Hotels is putting together a technology team that will be led by Chief Technology Officer (CTO). While the CTO is yet to be hired, the goals have been defined. "Technology will not be a support function, but it will be a strategic function and we will share it with Hamstede," Keswani told Business Insider. Hamstede Living, is a joint venture between Lemon Tree Hotels and global private equity major Warburg Pincus, that will offer co-living spaces for young, urban professionals and housing for migrant students in Indian cities. Lemon Tree Hotels will have a 30% stake in Hamstede. There are three ways in which Keswani aims to use technology to boost his hotel business but this will not include internet of things (IOT). "You don’t need your phone to open your curtains. The mid-market customer does not want it," he said adding that,"I don’t agree with what a lot of these international guys are doing where they are spending a lot of money on what I currently feel are doubtful return on investments. You can have your cell phone doing everything in the room, but as a consumer myself that’s not a real delight. At the end of December 2018, over 30% of Lemon Tree Hotels' rooms were owned by others but managed by the chain in exchange for a fee, according to research by HDFC Securities. Enhance the loyalty programme A three-year old loyalty programme has played a big part in helping Lemon Tree Hotels retain customers. "I was astonished in the last five hotels we have taken under management, in three months, 20% of the hotels’ inventory has come from the loyalty programme. It’s an amazing number. Typically, hotels cash break-even (without accounting for interest cost) at 25% occupancy. If you include interest cost, the break-even point is at 40-45% occupancy. If in 3 months, I get 20% (from loyalty programme) which means you are at cash break even in 3 months, that too in a bad year. So, going forward, why would I not leverage this? We are going to invest more capital in our mobile site, in loyalty, and in technology," Keswani explained. Productivity and cost control How can technology help hotels save cosrs? "I have a call centre with 150 people who get thousands of calls everyday from customers. 80% of those queries are very, very repetitive and predictable. It said that the companies are selling products for much lower than their fair price value, thus avoiding a larger GST cost. “Since FDI is governed by the FEMA and the Reserve Bank of India, it is demanded that an another enquiry may also be initiated on pattern of receivable funding and its disbursement," CAIT <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/cait-seeks-probe-into-alleged-avoidance-of-tax-liability-by-amazon-flipkart-11574620469832.html">said.</a> Earlier, the CAIT also organised a nationwide protest against the deep discounting of products on Amazon and Flipkart. OYO OYO brought Indian budget hotels online and shot to fame thanks to its many customers. But hotel owners who they work with are alleging that OYO’s practices are unethical. Recently, a Bengaluru hotelier filed a cheating case against Agarwal and six others claiming that the OYO hasn’t paid him his dues. According to the complaint, OYO was supposed to pay ₹7 lakh a month for room bookings but failed to do so since May 2019. OYO responded stating that it would fight back with a complaint against the hotelier for "using improper legal means to sensationalise a civil dispute and get attention". “This matter is currently sub-judice, and we are not at the liberty of commenting on specifics. Having said that, we strongly refute the claims made in the complaint that has been wrongfully filed against our founder and six other office bearers, based on false allegations and exaggeration on a regular commercial dispute,” the company said in a statement. The case of the Bengaluru hotelier is not isolated. Similar reports have surfaced from across the country against <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/why-many-hotel-owners-across-india-are-agitated-oyos-business-model-106154">OYO</a>. Zomato Indian foodtech unicorn has had a rough few months thanks to one of its bestselling features – Zomato Gold. The National Restaurant Association of India protested against the feature saying that Zomato advertised the ‘elite’ feature which turned out to be a mass product. This resulted in thousands of restaurateurs logging out of Zomato. The foodtech aggregator had shut down the logout movement by not offering discounts for its gold membership. New Delhi, Jan 8 () Deep discounting on goods and services offered by large online retailers has emerged as a major area of concern in a study conducted by CCI, particularly in case of mobile phones, and the fair trade regulator will probe all cases of possible abuse of market dominance.
 Releasing the findings of the study and its own observations, the the Competition Commission of India (CCI) said marketplace platforms need to adopt self-regulatory measures to address all areas of concern flagged in the study and also bring out clear and transparent policies on discounts.
 The study, Market Study on E-Commerce in India, was initiated by the regulator in April 2019 with a view to better understand the functioning of e-commerce in India and its implications for markets and competition.
 The study released on Wednesday found that issues like lack of platform neutrality, unfair platform-to-business contract terms, exclusive contracts between online marketplace platforms and sellers/service providers, platform price parity restrictions and deep discounts among others may directly or indirectly have a bearing on competition.
 While highlighting competition issues, CCI said that the price points at which sellers sell the products on the marketplace platforms are in many instances lower than the cost price for the brick and mortar retailers.
 These retailers maintain that they either have to match the online discounts at a significant loss or the online market would be foreclosed for them. 
 This was pointed out to be a particularly pressing concern in the case of mobile phones, where online markets constitute around 40 per cent of the total sales in the country.
 Making observation about the goods category, the regulator said the issue raised by the sellers relates to online discounts on major goods platforms purportedly pushing the prices below cost and impairing the offline small retailers' ability to compete in certain product categories.
 "The platforms denied any involvement in pricing," CCI said.
 It further added that "unfair pricing contravenes the competition law under Section 4(2) of the Act when indulged in by a dominant enterprise."
 Regarding services category, it said, "...discounts are offered by even the pure intermediary platforms following marketplace model with no control over the inventory sold through them".
 Discounts are purportedly funded by platforms for consumer on-boarding. It is causing the service providers, i.e. hotels and restaurants to lose control over the price of their products sold/distributed through online platforms, which also affects price and sales through other channels.
 Discounting is a common business strategy but where the design of the discounting schemes is misaligned with the rational business practices of the service providers, the use of such discounts as a competitive strategy comes into question.
 CCI, with a view to reduce information asymmetry and promote competition on the merits, has urged e-commerce platforms to put in place certain transparency measures.
 It urged the platforms to bring out clear and transparent policies on discounts, including the basis of discount rates funded by platforms for different products and suppliers and the implications of participation and non-participation in discount schemes.
 Besides, it said the business users should be notified about any proposed changes in terms and conditions.
 "The proposed changes not to be implemented before the expiry of a notice period, which is reasonable and proportionate to the nature and extent of the envisaged changes and to their consequences for the business user concerned," CCI said.
 Additionally, the regulator also asked e-commerce platforms to put in place transparency measures for search ranking, collection, use and sharing of data, user review and rating mechanism among others. SRS

Paytm is competing with almost everyone in Indian e-commerce

Mumbai, Feb 9 () With internet savvy millennials and Gen Z seeking an end to invasive questions while booking their stay, a survey has revealed that more than 72 per cent respondents prefer 'couple-friendly' hotels for short duration stays. Over 72 per cent respondents picked a couple-friendly hotel for shorter duration stays, be it for 'daycations' (brief duration day stay) or overnight stay, as per the survey by online travel company Goibibo. It further revealed that more than 46 per cent of the hotel bookings came from couples residing in the same city, whereas about 54 per cent were made for hotels located at an outstation destination. The pan-India online survey was commissioned by Goibibo's Consumer Insights among 1,000 respondents (couples in the age group of 22 to 26 years). Further, the survey found that 50 per cent respondents had booked couple-friendly hotels more than five times in the last one year. About one-third of these bookings were made on the day of check-in, it added. While bookings for couple friendly hotels are on the rise, some of the biggest yet common concerns of bookers include constant judgement and prying behaviour of the hotel staff (39 per cent) and sharing personal identity-proofs during check-ins (36 per cent). Other aspects that bookers are uncomfortable with include receiving promotional offers or mails from the hotels post the stay (27 per cent) and inability to remove the booking from their travel records (25 per cent), the survey added. "This survey shows how hassle-free access to safe spaces and cost-effective comfort is what matters most to young couples looking to book hotels," Goibibo Chief Marketing Officer Sunil Suresh said. Highlighting some of the key parameters considered by couples while making reservations at a couple-friendly hotel, the survey said more than 80 per cent of the respondents shared their comfort in booking hotels that offer 'No Questions Asked' check-ins. Other decision-making factors include affordability (61 per cent), location (55 per cent), rating of the hotel (53 per cent), privacy (52 per cent) and discounts offered (38 per cent), it added. In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, Keswani revealed his future plans. "I can tie up with related companies like an airline and a retailer, and the members of my loyalty programme can redeem points in any of the three purchase points," he said. The boost to valuation Aside from opening doors to new partnerships, the loyalty programme may also offer a valuation boost. The now beleaguered Jet Airways' loyalty programme, Jet Privilege, had 8 million member, according to the annual report of 2017-18. However, even before that in 2017, the programme was valued at over a billion dollars.  Keswani is confident that the pace of member addition will only increase in the days to come. "In three years, I have data on a million customers, and am adding half a million customers or more every year. As I open more and more hotels, more and more people will join. Since I am tripling in size in the next 3-4 years, I will start adding 150,000 (loyalty programme) members a month. I will also hit 8-10 million (loyalty members) in the next 5 years," he said.
