Economists at the country's largest lender, SBI, today said they see India's Q2 real GDP growth slowing down further to 6.5% in the September quarter of this fiscal year. Amid concerns over the country's economic growth rate and whether it is slowing down, the analysts said they expect FY25 growth to come "closer to" 7%. SBI analysts join a long line of agencies like Fitch, ADB, IMF, Moody, World Bank, S&amp;P, and even RBI in forecasting India's GDP growth for FY25 in the range of 6.8% to 7.2% for FY25, driven by robust consumption and investment. SIP inflows have been at an all-time high, and so has QIP (qualified institutional placement) fundraising. As many as 71 companies raised Rs 88,678 crore this year through QIPs. Activity in Indian primary markets also remained robust, with 78 mainboard IPOs in 2024; this is a 111% rise from just 38 listings in FY23. Between April and June 2024, India's real GDP grew by 6.7%, the lowest growth seen in 15 quarters, pushing experts to believe that India is caught in a cycle of slowdown. "There is some incipient pressure evident on the domestic economy. Based on our analysis of 50 meaningful leading indicators (both consumption and demand-centric), a dip looks plausible across select cohorts of agriculture, industry, and services in Q2," the <keyword id="22337294" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI-economists" source="keywords">SBI economists</keyword> added. Stating that they track 50 indicators to gauge economic activity, SBIs note said the proportion of indicators showing acceleration declined to 69% in Q2 FY25, as against 80% in Q2 FY24 and 78% in Q1 FY25. However, things might be changing now, given that rural demand has started looking up amidst muted urban demand. SBI also explained that the ongoing regulatory tightening on unsecured lending and roadblocks that are hindering rollover/refinancing of debt through unsecured credit are dismantling the unwarranted exuberance that had built up post-pandemic, especially in the urban areas. Notably, RBI MPC is set to meet between December 4 and 6, 2024, to decide if the prevailing repo rate of 6.5%, which has stayed unchanged for the last 2 years, should be brought down or not. Unveiling the impact of Flipkart on innovation and growth in seller success stories

<ul><li>Services sector consumption has been holding up but the picture while goods is ambivalent, say economists at Bank of Baroda.</li><li>They do not see any revival in private sector capex in a broad based manner in this financial year.</li><li>Debt issuances have gone up significantly; 80% is by companies from the financial services sector.</li><li>The possibility of a rate cut has now been pushed to FY25, say <keyword id="92547" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bob" source="Orion">BoB</keyword> economists. </li></ul>India’s investment and consumption story is not broad-based but patchy across sectors, according to Bank of Baroda economists. They said that a clearer picture could emerge in the next few months after the festival season while addressing the ‘State of the Economy’ webinar. “A lot of how consumption will evolve for this fiscal year will depend upon Kharif sowing. As of now, the services sector is holding up with good pent up demand in travel and hospitality. But with goods, it has been ambivalent as seen in the IIP data of consumer sectors. We will know more after the September-October and November period,” said <keyword id="170005" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="madan-sabnavis" source="Orion">Madan Sabnavis</keyword>, chief economist at Bank of Baroda. The IIP numbers of June which were released last Friday came in much lower than expectations at 3.7%. While 14 of the 23 sectors in manufacturing registered negative growth, the most disappointing was the electronics sector which has been a front runner of the PLI scheme. “There is something in these numbers we are unable to piece together,” commented <keyword id="4667782" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sabnavis" source="Orion">Sabnavis</keyword>. A fuzzy picture With regards to investments too, most of the capital expenditure is being done by the government — with most coming from the central government. With regards to private capex, only the services sector of airlines is leading investment announcements. Within the industry, only the chemicals sector registered an increase. “Investment picture is currently fuzzy and we do not see the private investment cycle beginning in a big way,” said <keyword id="18400672" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jahnavi-prabhakar" source="Orion">Jahnavi Prabhakar</keyword>, economist at Bank of Baroda. Within the government spending too, there has been a deviation as normal central and state government spends are on par. But in the last two years, the centre has been spending more than the states. States that generally have a large capex outlay like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are lagging behind. Debt vs equity issuances In spite of the Sensex hitting an all-time high, the equity issuances for FY24 till date have been lower than what was seen last year. This however is due to the base effect of LIC’s public offer last year. Debt issuance however has gone up significantly — by over 81% during the same time. But here too most of the issuances — at around 80% are from the financial services sector with NBFCs and HFCs accounting to around 60% of them. “Most of the NBFCs will be lending to the retail and services sector,” said Sabnavis, adding that he doesn’t see private sector capex revival this financial year in a broadbased manner. Moreso, the interest rate scenario has too many variables in play like possible production side worries from lower pulse sowing, El Nino effect on climate and global situation. “There are pain points with regards to oil seeds sowing and hence edible oils along with pulses,” says <keyword id="7062" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="prabhakar" source="Orion">Prabhakar</keyword>. The economists at the bank have also pushed the possibility of an interest rate cut to FY25 — and now believe that Indian central bank will maintain the status quo as long as inflation is within their expected lines.

The number of launches went down by 2% in Mumbai and 4% in Ahmedabad in the January-March quarter of 2024. <keyword id="19916484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-capital-region" source="keywords">National Capital Region</keyword> (NCR) and Hyderabad showed a marginal 3% and 1% respectively, as per data launched by <keyword id="19895044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="knight-frank-india" source="keywords">Knight Frank India</keyword>. But, that’s only half the story. Bengaluru’s new launches picked up by 9%, and three cities showed double-digit growth. Kolkata’s new launches grew by a whopping 89%, Pune’s grew by 15% and Chennai's by 10%. Overall, new project launches grew by 7% across the top 8 cities of <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>. “New launches were recorded at 93,254 units, surpassing sales in this quarter. Depleted older inventory drove consumers to newly launched properties at attractive prices, lowering average inventory age to 15.9 quarters in Q1 2024 from 16.7 at the end of 2023” says <keyword id="19895043" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="knight-frank" source="keywords">Knight Frank</keyword> in its report. sales across these cities in Q4 grew 9%, and five of them exhibited double-digit growth. Yet, there are two outliers — NCR sales grew by a marginal 1%, and sales fell by 2% in Bengaluru. Pune and Kolkata are the only two cities that saw a robust double-digit growth in sales as well as new launches. High-value home sales are growing at a faster pace than others. Homes priced at ₹1 crore and above accounted for 40% of the same. A year ago, they accounted for 29% of sales. The sales of such units grew by 51%. Units priced between ₹50 lakh to ₹1 crore fell by 6% YoY in Q4. Those under ₹50 lakh fell by 10% YoY, continuing a nine-quarter deceleration trend. “The residential segment witnessed a significant surge, propelled by continued growth in sales in the higher price category of ₹1 crore and above. This not only demonstrates a strong demand trajectory but also reflects buyers' confidence in making long-term commitments,” says <keyword id="20404833" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shishir-baijal" source="keywords">Shishir Baijal</keyword>, chairman &amp; managing director of Knight Frank India.
