State-owned <keyword id="20039085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India-Ltd" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Coal India Ltd" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Coal India Ltd">Coal India Ltd</keyword>'s contribution to the <keyword id="21546749" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-exchequer" source="keywords">government exchequer</keyword> increased by 6.4 per cent to Rs 60,140.31 crore in <keyword id="19910780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FY24" source="keywords">FY24</keyword>, over the financial year 2022-23. <keyword id="19903245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India" source="keywords">Coal India</keyword> Ltd (CIL), which accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal output, paid Rs 56,524.11 crore to the government exchequer in FY23, according to provisional figures of the coal ministry. Total levies paid to the government in March 2024 also went up by 14.8 per cent to Rs 6,069.18 crore from Rs 5,282.59 crore paid in the corresponding month of FY23. Of the total Rs 60,140.42 crore paid to the government exchequer in FY24, maximum amount of Rs 13,268.55 crore was made to the state government of Jharkhand, followed by Rs 12,836.20 crore to the Odisha government, Rs 11,890.79 crore to Chhattisgarh, Rs 10,865.96 crore to Madhya Pradesh, and Rs 6,188.89 crore to Maharashtra among others. The coal-producing states earned the <keyword id="19945274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue" source="keywords">revenue</keyword> from royalty, District Mineral Foundation (DMF) and National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) among others. The government had earlier said that the coal-producing states earned a revenue of Rs 1.52 lakh crore in the last nine years from royalty, DMF and NMET. Coal mining sector has proved to be a big booster for the economic growth of the states that produce fossil fuel. State governments are entitled to receive 14 per cent of royalty on the sale price of coal and 30 per cent of the royalty as contribution towards the proposed district mineral foundations (DMFs)-- which is meant to support project-affected people---and two per cent of NMET from dry-fuel produced by the coal companies and also the private sector. In case of captive, commercial mines states are also entitled to receive the revenue share offered by the auction holder in a transparent bidding process. Apart from this, state governments also benefit from increased employment, land compensation, increased investment in allied infrastructure like railways, road and several other economic benefits. Coal India's production and off-take are pegged at 838 MT for FY'25. Coal India's contribution to govt exchequer rises 6.4% to ₹60,140 crore in FY24

As per the Economic Survey of 2022-2023 around 65 per cent of India's population lived in rural areas in 2021. The report also highlighted that India stands out among emerging economies due to its strong GDP growth. The financial outlook is positive, with efforts to cut the fiscal deficit to 4.5 per cent. The report also noted that India's credit rating may improve because of the strong tax revenue and a large dividend from the RBI which will lead to a lower fiscal deficit than expected. "The fiscal outlook appears promising, with continued focus on reducing the fiscal deficit toward the 4.5 per cent target. Strong tax collections and a substantial RBI dividend may enable the fiscal deficit to come in lower than expected, which could potentially lead to an improved sovereign rating" said the report.

Scandals in China and Australia hit Big 4 giant PwC, but global revenues reached a record high

According to the official statement, the Cabinet also approved a proposal to set the <keyword id="22951452" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Annual-License-Fee" source="keywords">Annual License Fee</keyword> (ALF) for FM channels at 4 per cent of <keyword id="20406587" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gross-Revenue" source="keywords">Gross Revenue</keyword>, excluding Goods and Services Tax (GST). This will apply to the 234 new cities and towns. The expansion of Private FM Radio to these 234 new locations will address the existing demand for FM radio services in areas still uncovered by private broadcasters, providing access to new and local content in <keyword id="20520759" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="regional-languages" source="keywords">regional languages</keyword>. This initiative will create new <keyword id="19972727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="employment-opportunities" source="keywords">employment opportunities</keyword>, promote local dialects and culture, and support the 'vocal for local' initiative. Many of the approved cities and towns are located in Aspirational districts and areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism (LWE). The introduction of Private FM Radio in these regions will further strengthen the Government's outreach efforts. The evolution of India's Private FM Radio Policy marked a shift from <keyword id="22951453" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medium-wave" source="keywords">Medium Wave</keyword> (MW) broadcasting to Frequency Modulated (FM) waves, driven by a need to enhance the quality and variety of radio programming, improve broadcast standards, and modernize outdated equipment. The journey began with the approval of the FM Phase-I Policy in July 1999, which aimed to revitalize the radio industry by introducing open auctions for selecting successful bidders. However, the initial phase met with limited success, with only 21 channels becoming operational across 12 cities. Recognizing the need for a more robust framework, the government introduced the improved FM Phase-II Policy in July 2005, following recommendations from the Dr Amit Mitra Committee and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). This policy was well-received by stakeholders and resulted in significant growth in the FM radio industry, creating new employment opportunities and expanding the reach of private FM radio. Despite this success, many cities, particularly those with populations below three lakh and border areas, remained outside the private FM radio network. The necessity for further expansion led to the introduction of the FM Phase-III Policy, which sought to address the unmet demand for FM radio in uncovered cities. This policy recognized the strategic importance of extending FM radio services to border areas, such as Jammu &amp; Kashmir, the North Eastern states, and island territories, where private broadcasters had been reluctant to enter due to concerns about viability. The policy also aimed to incentivise the development of FM radio in these regions to counter cross-border propaganda and ensure that Indian radio channels had a wider reach. Additionally, the Phase-III Policy acknowledged the presence of 97 vacant channels from Phase-II that could not be auctioned for various reasons and emphasized the need for better utilisation of the frequency spectrum allocated for FM broadcasting.

Cabinet approves Rs 784.87 cr e-auctions for 730 FM radio channels across 234 new cities

New Delhi [India], September 16 (ANI): In a bid to maintain equilibrium in the domestic and international fuel markets, the <keyword id="6357307" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="central-government" source="Orion">Central Government</keyword> announced changes in the taxation structure for crude oil and petroleum product exports, effective from today. As per the <keyword id="1222399" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gazette-of-india" source="Orion">Gazette of India</keyword>, the <keyword id="156153" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ministry-of-finance" source="Orion">Ministry of Finance</keyword>, <keyword id="208415" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="department-of-revenue" source="Orion">Department of Revenue</keyword>, issued two notifications, amending previous taxation rates. According to the notifications, the <keyword id="1229080" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="windfall-tax" source="Orion">windfall tax</keyword> on domestic crude oil production has been increased significantly, while levies on the export of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) and diesel have been reduced. A tax levied on an unforeseen or unexpectedly large profit is called windfall tax. The windfall tax on domestic crude oil production has been raised from Rs 6,700 per ton to Rs 10,000 per ton. This move aims to capture a larger portion of profits from the surging crude oil prices, providing additional revenue for the government. The windfall tax on the export of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) has been decreased from Rs 4 per liter to Rs 3.50 per liter. This reduction is expected to make Indian ATF exports more competitive in the international market. The tax on the export of diesel has been reduced from Rs 6 per liter to Rs 5.50 per liter. This adjustment is aimed at boosting the export of diesel, potentially increasing revenue from international sales. These changes come as India navigates the complexities of fluctuating global oil prices and aims to strike a balance between reaping benefits from high crude oil prices and ensuring competitiveness in the international fuel market. The notifications, No. 30/2023-Central Excise and No. 31/2023-Central Excise, issued by the Ministry of Finance, will come into effect on September 16, 2023. The government expects these tax adjustments to have a positive impact on the nation's fiscal health and its position in the global fuel market. These amendments follow a series of recent changes in the taxation structure for petroleum products and are part of the government's efforts to adapt to the evolving economic landscape and maintain stability in the energy sector. Govt hikes windfall tax on domestic crude, reduces levy on export of diesel

According to the report, iPhone shipments grew about 39 per cent to 9.2 million units last year. "In CY23, India represented 4 per cent of iPhones shipments and revenue, up from 3 per cent in CY22 and 1 per cent 5 years ago," said analysts in the report. "If India continues to grow at the same trajectory while China iPhone shipments stay flat, India would be a bigger iPhone market than China by 2027," it added. TechCrunch was first to report on Apple India's 2023 revenue. Apple registered strong double-digit growth in the December quarter in India, reaching another quarter revenue record in the country, company's CEO <keyword id="19954680" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tim-cook" source="keywords">Tim Cook</keyword> said earlier this month. Responding to an analyst's questions, <keyword id="19905938" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cook" source="keywords">Cook</keyword> said that the India market "hit a quarter revenue record". India's smartphone shipments remained flat in 2023 at 152 million units, but Apple reached the 10-million-unit mark in shipments and captured the top position in revenue in a calendar year for the first time. In a bid to further boost mobile manufacturing in the country, the government in January slashed import duty on parts used for manufacturing of mobile phones to 10 per cent from 15 per cent. The move will help companies like Apple to manufacture more of its high-end premium smartphones in the country. Apple's India revenue up 42% to $8.7 bn in 2023: Morgan Stanley

New Delhi, The technology industry in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> reached $253.9 billion in revenue with an addition of $9.3 billion incremental revenue in FY2024 (estimated), growing at 3.8 per cent from FY23, a <keyword id="19955786" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nasscom" source="keywords">Nasscom</keyword> report said on Friday. The technology industry added 60,000 net employees in FY2024 (estimated), with a total headcount of 5.43 million. However, the focus on digital skills continued to remain strong with AI, Cloud, data and cybersecurity emerging as top in-demand skills for the industry, the report noted. The Indian tech services export revenue (excluding hardware) is expected to touch $199 billion in reported currency, a growth of 3.3 per cent compared to FY2023. "We do see FY2025 as the year of capability building as the new normal. The engineering research and development (<keyword id="20612065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="erd" source="keywords">ER&amp;D</keyword>) sector alone contributed 48 per cent to the total export revenue addition in FY2024. Global Capability Centres or GCCs continue to invest in India, expanding their service portfolios at the same time new GCCs are setting up operations. The industry saw an addition of 53 new GCCs in 2023, the report said. "While headwinds like global economic slowdown, inflation, recessionary fears and geopolitical conflicts continue to pose challenges, we are confident that the industry will bounce back," said <keyword id="20134134" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajesh-nambiar" source="keywords">Rajesh Nambiar</keyword>, Chairperson, Nasscom. With digital tech spending expected to grow in 2024, "We will also witness emergence of alternative demand source, customer retention, faster go-to-market strategies in newer markets for enterprises," Nambiar added. With continued investments by the government and enterprises in emerging technologies, India's domestic sector emerged as the great propeller. Focus on application development, automation, verticalised products, software-as-a-service (SaaS), data migration for AI and Cloud enterprise spending are some of the notable drivers to this growth, the report showed. "The industry is committing 60-100 hours per year per employee on upskilling," the findings showed.

Gross Goods and Services Tax (<keyword id="19951327" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gst" source="keywords">GST</keyword>) collections surged to a <keyword id="19953076" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="record-high" source="keywords">record high</keyword> of Rs 2.10 lakh crore in the month of April. The GST collection has also registered a 12.4 per cent year-on-year growth. According to a statement by the <keyword id="19908390" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Finance" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ministry of Finance" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Ministry of Finance">Ministry of Finance</keyword>, the growth was propelled by a robust uptick in both <keyword id="20791652" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-transactions" source="keywords">domestic transactions</keyword>, which rose by 13.4 per cent, and <keyword id="19933566" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="imports" source="keywords">imports</keyword>, witnessing an 8.3 per cent spike. After accounting for refunds, the net GST revenue for April 2024 stood at Rs 1.92 lakh crore, showcasing an impressive 17.1 per cent growth compared to the corresponding period last year. The breakdown of April 2024 collections reveals positive performance across various components. Central Goods and Services Tax (<keyword id="20793046" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CGST" source="keywords">CGST</keyword>) recorded collections of Rs 43,846 crore, while State Goods and Services Tax (<keyword id="20025648" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SGST" source="keywords">SGST</keyword>) collections amounted to Rs 53,538 crore. Integrated Goods and Services Tax (<keyword id="20025649" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IGST" source="keywords">IGST</keyword>) collections totaled Rs 99,623 crore, including Rs 37,826 crore collected on imported goods. Additionally, cess collections reached Rs 13,260 crore, which included Rs 1,008 crore collected on imported goods. Furthermore, the inter-governmental settlement process saw the central government disbursing Rs 50,307 crore to CGST and Rs 41,600 crore to SGST from the IGST collected. This resulted in total revenue of Rs 94,153 crore for CGST and Rs 95,138 crore for SGST for April 2024 after regular settlement. During the financial year 2023-24 the total gross GST collection recorded at Rs 20.18 lakh crore, exceeding Rs 20 lakh crore with a 11.7 per cent increase compared to the previous fiscal year. The average monthly collection for this fiscal year, that ended in March 2024 stood at Rs 1.68 lakh crore, surpassing the previous year's average of Rs 1.5 lakh crore. The surge in recent GST collections reflects a positive trajectory for India's economy, underscoring robust domestic consumption and buoyant import activity. The figures bode well for the country's fiscal health and economic recovery efforts, signaling resilience amidst global uncertainties. The Goods and Services Tax was introduced in the country with effect from July 1, 2017, and states were assured compensation for loss of any revenue arising on account of the implementation of GST as per the provisions of the GST (Compensation to States) Act, 2017 for a period of five years.
