<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ukraine's most significant aircraft kills in 2024 are two Russian A-50 command planes.</li><li>The A-50 can track over 150 targets simultaneously and relay them to a dozen fighters jets.</li></ul>Ukraine's embattled air defense network started 2024 with a string of successes.In the first three months of the year, the country claimed to have intercepted at least 1,011 missiles and loitering munitions, and shot down at least 16 jets of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) — 13 of which were downed in just two weeks.The kills include two modern Su-35 fighters and 12 valuable Su-34 fighter-bombers. But the most significant kills may have been two Beriev A-50 airborne early warning and control (AEW&amp;C) aircraft — platforms that carry no offensive weapons.The loss of the two A-50s represents an enormous blow to the VKS and its operations in Ukraine.Flying since the earliest days of the war, both sides have utilized early warning and control aircraft to enhance their capabilities and defeat each other's planes and missiles. The USSR's first AEW&amp;C aircraft, the Tupolev Tu-126, was designed to patrol Russia's 15,000-mile northern coastline for American nuclear bombers and ICBMs.But the Tu-126 lacked look-down capability, meaning it couldn't detect or track low-flying objects underneath it. Known as the "Mushroom" by the crew, it is operated by ten specialists and is capable of providing 360-degree scanning coverage.In its most upgraded version, the A-50 is capable of tracking over 150 targets simultaneously at ranges as far as 400 miles, including a limited ability to detect and track certain ground targets as well. The A-50 can also coordinate and send guidance data to up to 12 friendly jets simultaneously. For example, it can relay targeting information on a Ukrainian aircraft or static targets to VKS jets, or alert Russia's ground-based air defenses to an incoming missile.The USSR reportedly built as many as five A-50s a year, with about 42 being built by 1992, when the breakup of the Soviet Union halted production. It has had limited export success; one A-50 airframe was sold to China, but it was equipped with a Chinese-made radar and redesignated as the KJ-2000. Similarly, three A-50EIs were sold to India in 2004, though they were fitted with Israeli-made radars. In 2016, India ordered two more A-50 airframes.Despite halting production, the Russians have been upgrading their remaining A-50s. In addition to detecting and tracking targets, the Sentry acts as a command-and-control platform, and is capable of delivering combat data and orders directly to friendly assets.The E-3 has become a silent workhorse since it was adopted. It has been deployed as part of nearly every military operation the US has undertaken since its introduction, conducted radar coverage flights for NORAD, supported anti-drug trafficking missions in Latin America, and has occasionally tagged along with the president as he travels to foreign countries.E-3s have also been sent to allies and partners as a way to show support and provide assurance during times of crisis. They were deployed to South Korea after President Park Chung-hee was assassinated in 1979 and in Egypt in 1981 after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They have also helped Russian kinetic strike operations by providing live targeting data and coordinates to anti-aircraft missiles, VKS strike aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, and drones.As an AEW&amp;C aircraft, the A-50 is <a target="_blank" href="https://breakingdefense.com/2023/12/why-russia-now-has-to-use-its-a-50u-closer-to-the-fight-in-ukraine/">not supposed to be deployed close to the frontline of active combat zones</a>. Yet on January 14, Ukraine managed to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-says-took-down-spy-plane-intel-suggests-russia-worried-2024-1">shoot down an A-50</a> as it was flying over the Sea of Azov. A month later, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-claims-shot-down-a-50-russian-spy-plane-again-2024-2">a second A-50 was claimed</a>, this time over Russia itself.The shoot downs are as devastating as they are surprising, since Russia is unlikely to have many remaining A-50s able to replace the losses.Estimates vary, but Russia <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iiss.org/en/publications/the-military-balance/the-military-balance-2022/">reportedly started</a> the war with as many as ten active A-50s, with seven reportedly being A-50Us. In addition to the two shot down, a third A-50 was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.twz.com/ukraine-situation-report-belarus-admits-russian-a-50-radar-jet-damaged-in-drone-attack">reportedly damaged in Belarus last year</a>.Russia has said that it will restart production of the A-50, but those efforts are likely to be complicated by Western sanctions on critical electrical components. The sanctions issues have already been blamed for delays in production of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.twz.com/44145/western-sanctions-are-driving-delays-to-russias-new-a-100-radar-plane-report">A-50's replacement</a>, the A-100. The Ukrainians have also targeted the factory <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-lost-a50s-ukraine-hit-factory-repairing-spy-planes-report-2024-3">where A-50s are produced</a> with drone strikes.The E-3, meanwhile, has also played an active role in the war in Ukraine, although it has done so without crossing into Ukrainian airspace.Flying over Poland, Romania, and the Black Sea, NATO and Allied E-3s have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/flying-with-nato-awacs-1.6619471">surveilled</a> Russian activity in Ukraine, <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/ukraine-russia-surveillance-defense-war-65b93d45f67204c9db7a07330e722097">detecting</a> the movement of Russian jets, ships, incoming missiles and drones, and sometimes even ground units. Ukraine has been more effective at destroying critical sites like air defenses and command posts well beyond Russia's frontlines, and it's plausible that intelligence gathered by E-3 radars and sensors may contribute to this targeting.The Russians have made their disapproval of the E-3 operations known. Last November, the Russians threatened to destroy a French Air Force E-3 that was operating over the Black Sea in what a French military spokesman described as "a particularly aggressive radio exchange."Their importance notwithstanding, the E-3s are in need of replacement.With an average age of around 44 years, maintaining the E-3s is only getting more difficult — especially since the airframe it is based on was originally designed and built in the late 1950s and hasn't been produced since 1991.Last year, the US Air Force announced that it had selected the Boeing E-7 Wedgetail as the E-3's intended replacement. The service <a target="_blank" href="https://www.defensenews.com/air/2024/02/15/tricky-e-7-adaptations-complicate-us-air-force-boeing-negotiations/">hopes to acquire</a> 26 of the new planes by 2032, with the first planned to be introduced in 2027.NATO announced a similar plan last November, with plans to acquire six E-7s, the first of which will enter service by 2031. He urged the people to view it wherever possible, as this will be the last total lunar eclipse, and the next one (total lunar eclipse) due only after three years on September 7, 2025. The Earth will come between the Sun and Moon and the blue planet's monstrous shadow -- from a staggering distance of 3.93 lakh kms -- will shroud its small natural satellite, partially or fully, depending on the angle of alignment from where it is viewed, Prof. Adur explained. The Sun is around 109 times bigger than Earth and over 148-million kms away, while the Earth is nearly four times larger than the Moon, with an average distance of 3,85 lakh kms separating them. "In a total lunar eclipse, the Moon is entirely blanketed by the Earth's darkest shadow, called the 'umbra', and at this time, the Moon appears a dark-reddish colour, or what is called the 'Blood Moon' phenomenon," Prof. Adur said. In scientific terms, it's called the 'Rayleigh Scattering' as during a lunar eclipse the only sunlight that reaches the Moon passes through the Earth's atmosphere, thus turning the Moon an apparent reddish colour. This is the second celestial event since the last partial Solar Eclipse (October 25), and can be witnessed by people in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, parts of Asia, Russia, North and South Americas, Australia, North Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean regions. Despite the scary myths or deep religious aspects associated with any eclipse (solar/lunar), Prof. Adur assured that there is absolutely no harm in viewing the unusual 'Blood Moon' on Tuesday with naked eyes or with binoculars which will enhance the reddish colour. The northeastern parts of India like Kohima, Agartala, Guwahati and other regions in the world will witness it in totality on Tuesday, the final eclipse of 2022. As the Moon will be below the horizon during the eclipse hours, most other parts of India will miss the exciting starting phases of both the partial and total eclipse, he said. Kolkata, New Delhi, Chennai along with Mumbai, can witness only the partial phase, and in the country's commercial capital barely 14 per cent of the Moon's obscuration can be viewed at 18.03 hours in the setting sun. However, the Moon will be seen 60 per cent covered in Nagpur, 66 per cent in Srinagar and in varying degrees in other cities, said Prof. Adur. In case people miss the 'Blood Moon' on Tuesday, they can wait for October 28, 2023, when there will be another partial lunar eclipse that will be visible in some parts of the country, Prof. Adur smiled. While the eastern and northeast India will enjoy a better view, those in the north, west and south may find it difficult to spot all the five planets. Birla Planetarium in Kolkata, told IANS, "Our understanding of the solar system tells us that the planets revolve around the <keyword id="24879" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sun" source="Orion">Sun</keyword> almost in the same plane. For this reason, sometimes they take the form of an arc or even a straight line in the sky. This is going to happen on Tuesday." Though the planets will be visible in the form of an arc to naked eyes, binoculars and small telescopes can provide a better view. After the Sun sets, Jupiter and Mercury would set within a short interval in the evening sky. "Since the Sun sets early in the east and northeast sky in India, people from these locations can get a clear view of Jupiter and Mercury. But due to the Sun's high glare, sky watchers from other parts of the country may find it difficult to spot these two planets on the western horizon, however, a keen observation might help," Dr Duari said. The sunset in Kolkata will occur today at 5.50 p.m, while in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, the sun will disappear from the sky at 6.36 p.m, 6.51 p.m, and 6.31 p.m, respectively. In the evening sky, there will be a very bright object - Venus. With the help of small telescopes, towards the northern direction from Venus, the planet Uranus can also be spotted. Both Venus and Uranus will be up in the sky for quite a long time. "Venus will set at least two hours after the sunset," Duari informed. Mars will be there in the night sky till midnight. Just beside Mars, one can also see the Moon tonight. According to Duari, the last time this event happened was on June 24, 2022. On September 8, 2024, the "planetary alignment" will again occur. He said, "The 'planetary alignment' is not a rare phenomenon. But it is a lovable event and reminds us about our existence in the cosmos." Sky gazers in for celestial treat tonight with 5 planets forming an arc

Deemed PSLV-C47, it will be the PSLV’s 49th flight and the XL variant’s 21st launch. According to the agency, the satellite’s main use will be addressing the demands of urban planning, rural resources, coastal land use and monitoring land cover. Since the <keyword id="3703841" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cartosat-satellites">Cartosat satellites</keyword> are capable of providing high resolution pictures, they serve a dual purpose. They can also be used to defend India’s borders. Upgraded surveillance In September 2016, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/ISRO-to-launch-12-18-satellites-per-year/articleshow/52867943.cms">Cartosat-2C</a> helped Indian Army soldiers conduct <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Surgical-Strikes-First-major-use-of-Cartosat-images-for-Army/articleshow/54596113.cms">surgical strikes</a> along the line of control (LoC) by <a href="https://asiancorrespondent.com/2016/09/reports-india-used-eye-sky-destroy-terror-targets-pakistan/">providing</a> ‘Area of Interest’ (AOI) based images. That satellite could provide images that were 0.65 meters in resolution. The Cartosat-3 satellite, on the other hand, is supposed to be even more accurate with a resolution of 0.25 meters. It will also have adaptive optics, acousto optical devices, in-orbit focusing using micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) and large area-light weight mirrors. ISRO expects Cartosat-3 to orbit the Earth for the next five years from 509 kilometers in space. Here’s what’s special about India’s Cartosat-3 launch tomorrow

India plans to launch on March 28 an earth observation <keyword id="6358065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="satellite">satellite</keyword> that will provide it near real-time images of its borders and also enable quick monitoring of <keyword id="139159" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="natural-disasters">natural disasters</keyword>. <keyword id="8831645" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gisat-1">GISAT-1</keyword> is slated to be lofted into space by GSLV-F10 rocket from Sriharikota spaceport in <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword>'s Nellore district, about 100 kms north of Chennai. "We are looking to launch this Geo imaging satellite on March 28, subject to weather conditions", an official of the Bengaluru-headquartered Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) told on Sunday. The rocket will place the spacecraft in a geosynchronous orbit. It will be subsequently positioned in geostationary orbit, about 36,000 kms above earth's equator, using its onboard propulsion system. The launch of GISAT-1 onboard GSLV-F10 rocket was originally planned for March 5 last year but postponed a day before the blast-off due to technical reasons. Experts said positioning the state-of-the-art agile earth observation satellite in geostationary orbit has key advantages. "It's going to be a game-changer in some sense for India", a Department of Space official said. "With onboard high resolution cameras, the satellite will allow the country to monitor the Indian land mass and the oceans, particularly its borders continuously". Listing the objectives of the mission, ISRO has earlier said the satellite would provide near real-time imaging of the large area region of interest at frequent intervals. It would help in quick monitoring of natural disasters, episodic and any short-term events. The third objective is to obtain spectral signatures of agriculture, forestry, mineralogy, disaster warning, cloud properties, snow and glacier and oceanography. GISAT-1 will facilitate near real-time observation of the Indian sub-continent, under cloud-free condition, at frequent intervals, ISRO said. The planned launch of GISAT-1, weighing about 2,268 kg, comes close on the heels of the successful February 28 PSLV- C51 mission that orbited Brazil's earth observation satellite Amazonia-1 and 18 co-passengers, including five built by students. Secretary in the Department of Space and ISRO Chairman K Sivan told last week that the technical issues that led to postponement of GISAT-1 mission have been resolved and the further delay in the launch was due to COVID-19-induced lockdown which affected normal work. According to sources, GISAT-1 will be followed by the maiden flight of Small Satellite Launch Vehicle, ISRO's compact launcher, likely in April. SSLV has been designed to meet "launch on demand" requirements in a cost-effective manner for small satellites in a dedicated and ride-share mode. It is a three-stage all solid vehicle with a capability to launch up to 500 kg satellite mass into 500 km low earth orbit (LEO) and 300 kg into Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO). By comparison, PSLV -- the workhorse launch vehicle of ISRO -- can take up to 1,750 kg payload into SSO of 600 km altitude. With lower per kg launch cost, the mini launcher will have multiple satellite mounting options for nano, micro and small satellites. Sivan had earlier termed the SSLV an innovative vehicle which can be assembled in just 72 hours. "Instead of 60 days (for building a PSLV), it (SSLV) will be assembled in three days; instead of 600 people (needed to build a PSLV), it (SSLV) will be done by six people", he had said. India likely to launch its 'eye in the sky' satellite GISAT-1 on March 28 to monitor borders and natural disasters

<ul><li>India’s largest surveillance satellite so far, the Radar Satellite (<keyword id="997923" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RISAT">RISAT</keyword>) 2BR1, is set to launch on May 22. </li><li>It is the third in India’s RISAT series of launches. </li><li>This will mean increased vigilance along India’s China and Pakistan borders. </li></ul>India is upgrading its spy satellite system by launching <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/india-to-get-another-eye-in-the-sky-on-may-22/articleshow/69192628.cms">another</a> ‘eye in the sky’ on May 22. The South Asian country’s new addition will be able to pierce through clouds, and capture ‘the real picture’ of its borders, amidst intensifying geopolitical tensions. The Radar Satellite (RISAT) 2BR1 is the latest addition to the RISAT series of India’s defensive satellites. This is an upgrade over its predecessors and adds to India’s surveillance capabilities. On one side, India will be able to monitor the Indian Ocean for Chinese naval ships more efficiently and, on the other, keep an eye on the Arabian Sea for Pakistani warships. Even Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and the Line of Control (LoC) that runs between Pakistan and India will be under surveillance — day and night. RISAT 2BR1 is first of the five planned military satellites that Indian <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="space">Space</keyword> Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) has planned for 2019. This is an impressive record for ISRO, which launches one or two military satellites a year. Piercing the Clouds RISAT 1 and RISAT 2 are strong surveillance satellites in their own right. But RISAT 2BR1’s X Band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can pierce through the clouds, and has a resolution of up to one meter. Increased resolution means, it can decipher between different objects on the ground provided they’re at least a meter apart. RISAT 2, launched in 2009, was India’s first reconnaissance satellite, also known as spy or intelligence satellites. The original X Band SAR on board was a military grade sensor radar from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). It was actually launched before RISAT 1, <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/Spacecraft/risat-1">officially</a> an agricultural satellite, in lieu of the 2009 Mumbai terror attacks which called for increased vigilance along the borders. Striking resolution Images from RISAT 2 are known to have played a role in <a href="https://m.economictimes.com/news/science/indias-eyes-in-the-skies-gave-images-for-surgical-strikes/articleshow/54598628.cms">conducting</a> the surgical strikes along India’s LoC in 2016, as well as the 2019 Balakot <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/air-strikes-hit-balakot-in-pakistan-initial-assessment-100-hit-sources/article26373318.ece">airstrike</a>. The indigenously manufactured X Band SAR on RISAT 2BR1 uses the motion of the radar’s antenna to scan over the area where the target is assigned. So, rather than use conventional beam scanning to capture an image, X Band SAR uses radar pulse calculations to create a spatial resolution. Larger the aperture, or longer that radar pulses take to return, the higher the image resolution. The RISAT 2BR1 will launch from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh abroad one of the variants of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

 This isn’t India’s first radar imaging earth observation satellite. It’s not even the second. It’s the third satellite in what ISRO promises to be multiple RISAT launches in the coming year. At least five, according to Sivan — a big step up from just two RISAT launches over the past ten years. The aim is to help the Indian Army keep an eye on uninvited incursions along the border where human partol is difficult and monitor potential terrorist hideouts, and launch pads. In fact, imaging from RISAT-1 and RISAT-2 were <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/surgical-strikes-satellite-images-pakistan-loc-indian-army-344075-2016-09-30">reportedly</a> instrumental in the surgical strike that India carried out in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in 2016 and again, this year, during the Balakot ariel attack. The need for more surveillance isn’t limited to India’s borders on land, but also extends to the seas. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/2-of-asias-biggest-militaries-are-working-on-a-deal-that-could-give-them-an-edge-over-china/articleshow/66324453.cms">growing presence of China</a> in the Indian Ocean isn’t only a worrying factor for India but also for its neighbouring countries. But, a RISAT satellite can track ships in the can giving India the opportunity to head off any threats. Not just surveillance and reconnaissance Since a 615-kilogram satellite can monitor the Earth — come rain, come shine — it’s also useful in situations of disaster management. Where ordinary cameras depend on light, RISAT’s active sensor, or SAR, can observe the Earth without clouds or bad weather getting in the way. After the successful launch of the RISAT-2B, ISRO plans to launch the RISAT-2BR1, RISAT-2BR2, RISAT-1A and RISAT-2A satellites within the year. The first of these is expected in April, according to India’s apex space agency along with two other defence satellites. India launched its third 'eye in the sky' — and has five more on the way

It's built to fly up to 11 hours nonstop.</li><li>The game-changing aircraft should open new, previously uneconomical routes and connect more cities.</li></ul>Boeing is facing renewed scrutiny after an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-737-max-safety-record-crashes-issues-2024-1#:~:text=The%20737%20Max%20is%20Boeing's,years%2C%20one%20of%20its%20deadliest&amp;text=A%20Boeing%20737%20Max%209%20had%20to%20make%20an%20emergency,due%20to%20a%20manufacturing%20issue.">Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 plane lost a part of its fuselage</a> during a January flight — and it could prompt airlines to turn to European competitor Airbus.On Tuesday, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-ceo-boeing-alternatives-due-to-delays-and-grounding-2024-1">United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby suggested a possible new trajectory</a> for the carrier amid the Max 9 fallout, which resulted in dozens of United's own Max planes being temporarily grounded and a subsequent loss of revenue."The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/faa-grounds-boeing-737-max-9-planes-after-alaska-airlines-incident-2024-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Max 9 grounding</a> is probably the straw that broke the camel's back for us," Kirby told CNBC. "We're gonna build an alternative plan that just doesn't have the Max 10 in it."The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-inside-boeing-737-max-10-testbed-compete-a321neo-2023-7">yet-to-be-certified by the FAA Max 10</a> is the largest variant in the 737 Max family, and United has 150 on order. However, deliveries have already been delayed at least five years, and Kirby noted the "consistent manufacturing challenges" and called on Boeing to "take action."If United does change its order book, it's likely the carrier would go for the <a href="https://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/news/2022/06/22/boeing-exec-says-max-10-strong-competitor-for-a321.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Max's main competitor</a> — the Airbus A321neo. United has 180 total A321 planes on <a href="https://www.airbus.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2023-10-united-airlines-orders-60-additional-a321neo-aircraft#:~:text=United%20previously%20ordered%2050%20A321XLR,now%20for%20180%20A321%20aircraft." target="_blank" rel="noopener">order</a>, including 130 for the A321neo and 50 for the A321neoXLR.The "Xtra Long Range" variant, in particular, is Airbus' longest-ranged A321neo option. Like the Max 10 and Max 7 — Boeing's smallest 737 Max model — the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-airbus-new-game-changing-a321xlr-aircraft-launching-2024-2023-7">XLR is also yet to be certified by the FAA</a> but has not faced the same scrutiny. Even before the Max fiasco, airlines were eyeing the versatile narrowbody, which is expected to enter service this year.Here's why the A321neoXLR could be an industry game changer as demand continues to surge, people seek more point-to-point flying, and airlines continue to modernize their fleets. <h2>The A321XLR can open new routes thanks to its extra fuel tank</h2><div type="image" title="The first rear center fuel tank for the Airbus A321XLR being delivered." height="1290" width="1720" msid="101417566" hostid="261"></div>Single-aisle planes have been flying across the Atlantic for decades now, like JetBlue's Boston to London route using an A321XLR and Icelandair's New York to Reykjavik flight using a Boeing 757.However, the <a href="https://www.aerotime.aero/articles/easa-sides-with-faa-design-requirements-for-airbus-a321xlr-tank" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A321XLR's large rear center fuel tank</a> allows it to fly up to 5,400 miles (11 hours) nonstop, which is 15% further than the A321LR and gives airlines added flexibility.The XLR's range is especially helpful in regard to underserved markets because it should let airlines open previously uneconomical routes and effectively eliminate layovers between low-demand city pairs.American Airlines, which has ordered 50 XLRs, has suggested routes like Raleigh, North Carolina, direct to London — meaning passengers wouldn't have to stop in the carrier's Charlotte or New York hubs along the way."American likes the A321, and we can do a number of things with the XLR, including serving routes that cannot support a 787 but where we still have a nice onboard product," American's managing director of global network planning <a href="https://aviationweek.com/air-transport/airports-networks/american-eyes-multi-uses-airbus-xlr-leverages-ba-partnership" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jason Reisinger said at a Routes Americas 2023 panel in March.</a>Reisinger is likely nodding to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-american-airlines-new-business-class-flagship-suite-for-the-a321xlr-787-2022-9">American's brand new "Flagship Suite" business class</a> product that is set to debut on its future Boeing 787 and XLRs starting this year.<h2>The XLR will offer enhanced comfort and economics</h2><div type="image" title="A321XLR flying." height="1405" width="1874" msid="101417568" hostid="261"></div>According to an Airbus spokesperson, the XLR has good economics, including reducing fuel burn by 30% compared to the Boeing 757.And, he told Business Insider at the Paris Airshow in June that the jet does this without sacrificing capacity as it can hold between 180 and 220 people in a two-class configuration — similar to the 757, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/icelandair-orders-25-airbus-a321xlr-it-replaces-boeing-757s-2023-04-07/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">which Icelandair is replacing with the XLR.</a>Moreover, passenger comfort will not be compromised as Airbus has come up with new systems that <a href="https://www.breakingtravelnews.com/news/article/proving-the-a321xlrs-airspace-cabin-design-in-flight/">better regulate things like ventilation, temperature, and sound onboard</a>, as well as add more overhead bin space capacity — hopefully reducing the pesky gate checks.However, probably most importantly, the XLR will be a good fleet replacement aircraft as carriers ditch aging jets for ones with better engines and aerodynamics. This is not only healthy for an airline, but advanced systems can help reduce pilot workload and overall stress."The new Airbus A321XLR aircraft is an ideal one-for-one replacement for the older, less-efficient aircraft currently operating between some of the most vital cities in our intercontinental network," Andrew Nocella, Chief Commercial Officer for <a href="https://united.mediaroom.com/2019-12-03-United-Airlines-Sets-a-Course-for-the-Future-With-Order-of-50-Airbus-A321XLR-Aircraft#:~:text=%22The%20new%20Airbus%20A321XLR%20aircraft,president%20and%20chief%20commercial%20officer." target="_blank" rel="noopener">United said in a December 2019 press release announcing the XLR order.</a>An Airbus spokesperson told BI the XLR would also be half the cost to operate between Paris and New York compared to a widebody but noted there would be less revenue due to the fewer seats: "It's a balance," he said at the Paris Airshow.<h2>The XLR has already racked up hundreds of orders</h2><div type="image" title="An A321XLR in American livery." height="1803" width="2404" msid="101417574" hostid="261"></div>Since its world debut in 2019, the XLR has gotten over 500 orders from more than 25 airlines, an Airbus spokesperson told BI.Besides the two aforementioned orders from American and United, carriers from <a href="https://simpleflying.com/airbus-a321xlr-orders-2/">every corner of the globe have taken interest in the XLR jet.</a>Other deals include four from <a href="https://www.aviationtoday.com/2022/06/15/airbus-completes-first-a321xlr-test-flight/">launch customer Middle East Airlines</a>, 13 from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-jetblue-new-york-to-london-economy-mint-food-review-2021-8">JetBlue</a>, an undisclosed number from Indian airline IndiGo, 20 from Australian flag carrier Qantas, 30 from Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia X, 10 from Chile-based budget carrier Sky Airline, and seven from Czech Airlines.One thing to note: the diversity of operators, highlighting the plane's versatility that is expected to fit into both mainline and low-cost business models.IndiGo's order is particularly interesting for the region, with India historically lacking long-haul connectivity to cities in Europe and Southeast Asia.However, the XLR will help eliminate common layovers and create more direct links, like New Delhi to Seoul or Mumbai to Amsterdam, which are currently operated by dual-aisle jets."This order is an important milestone, as it reiterates our mission of strengthening air connectivity in India, which will, in turn, boost economic growth and mobility," <a href="https://www.airbus.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2019-10-indigo-signs-for-300-a320neo-family-aircraft">IndiGo's former CEO Ronojoy Dutta said in October 2019.</a>
