Overseas investments into India's sovereign bonds (or <keyword id="21202837" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="G-Secs" source="keywords">G-Secs</keyword>) were firm last week with an inflow of USD 403 million, soon after the government bonds were officially added to the <keyword id="20944101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="JPMorgan-Chase-Co" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co">JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co</keyword>'s benchmark emerging-market index -- Government Bond Index-Emerging Markets (GBI-EM). In a significant development that could pull in foreign funds into India's debt market, JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co added <keyword id="21354159" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-government-bonds" source="keywords">Indian government bonds</keyword> to its benchmark emerging-market index starting June 28. Inflows into the so-called fully accessible route (FAR) bonds by <keyword id="20015748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-portfolio-investors" source="keywords">foreign portfolio investors</keyword> have been to the tune of almost USD 11 billion since the inclusion announcement was made in September 2023, said global investment bank company <keyword id="19977638" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Morgan-Stanley" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Morgan Stanley" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Morgan Stanley">Morgan Stanley</keyword> in a report on Monday. Net inflows of money into India's debt markets have been positive in all but one month in 2024, data showed. "The <keyword id="20066775" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bond-market" source="keywords">bond market</keyword> saw foreign inflows in six out of the seven months so far in 2024, while equity flows are more mixed. Cumulative inflows to the bond market in 2024 are the strongest in recent years," the Morgan Stanley report titled 'India Fixed Income Strategy', said. One week after India's sovereign debt market secured a 1 per cent weight in JPMorgan's GBI-EM index, inflows into <keyword id="21603445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FAR-bonds" source="keywords">FAR bonds</keyword> stayed consistent. Officially, 29 FAR government bonds were included in the suite of global bond indices for emerging markets. This inclusion, according to Morgan Stanley, holds significant implications for foreign interest and participation in the Indian bond markets. Foreign investors continue to increase their purchase of G-Secs in 2024. FPIs added almost USD 7.1 billion in FAR bonds in 2024. As a result, <keyword id="20470056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-ownership" source="keywords">foreign ownership</keyword> of G-Secs has increased to 2.6 per cent. On G-Secs demand, Morgan Stanley notes that local banks hold 40 per cent of G-Secs. Insurance companies and the RBI hold 28 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively. "We expect the G-Secs supply pipeline to remain robust, supported by the government's aim to strategically consolidate debt through calendar-driven, auction-based switch operations and the re-issuance of securities to smooth the redemption profile and enhance liquidity in the G-Sec market," Morgan Stanley added. The inclusion of the index followed the Indian government's substantive market reforms for aiding foreign portfolio investments, the American multinational investment bank JP Morgan had said last year during the announcement. The inclusion of Indian government bonds in the JPMorgan Government Bond Index-Emerging Markets index could be seen as yet another sign of its growing appeal to global investors as it continues to remain one of the fastest-growing major economies. This development holds significance particularly as various global manufacturing behemoths are looking at India for investments, as part of their diversification strategy in a post-pandemic world order. JP Morgan had said India is expected to have a maximum 10 per cent weightage in its Government Bond Index-Emerging Markets. "Inclusion of the IGBs will be staggered over a 10-month period starting June 28, 2024, through March 31, 2025 (i.e., inclusion of 1 per cent weight per month)," JP Morgan had added then. Foreign investors are already making a beeline to place their bets in India's equity markets. Foreign portfolio investors have been net buyers in Indian stock markets, on and off.

Global investments in Indian government bonds firm, attributable to JPMorgan index inclusion

<ul><li>Sell-off by FPIs has been triggered by the underperformance of preferred stocks and outperformance in their least preferred sectors.</li><li>Drop in <keyword id="10995552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fpi-ownership" source="Orion">FPI ownership</keyword> comes as a surprise to analysts considering fundamentals of the Indian economy have never been better.</li><li>Despite the selloff since September, calendar 2023 sees net inflows of $12 billion n by foreign portfolio investors. </li></ul>As legendary investor Benjamin Graham often said, Mr Market constantly buys or sells a stock based on emotion and not on sound investing principles. Not surprising it is hard to make sense of the market and its gyrations. Even as India’s macro fundamentals are growing stronger each passing year, holdings of foreign portfolio investors have plumbed to their lowest level in a decade at 16.6%. What has contributed to the sell-off by FPIs is the underperformance of their preferred stocks and outperformance of stocks which they least preferred. In calendar 2023, small and midcap stocks have rallied by over 40% but the large caps have not done much. This is also a big reason for the selloff by FPIs. As US Treasury yields breached 4% levels, foreign investors began selling down India yet again from September 2023. This has resulted in their equity holdings reaching their lowest level in a decade. According to ICICI Securities, a leading domestic financial institution, this is a surprise, considering the favorable fundamentals of the Indian economy. The recent sell-off by FPIs has been driven by the decisive breakout of US bond yields above 3.5-4% post-September 2023. This spooked capital markets, despite the US Federal Reserve approaching the end of its rate hike cycle due to a moderating inflation outlook. The portfolio orientation of FPIs has also contributed to the drop in their equity holdings, with underperformance in their overweight position in high-quality, relatively expensive financial stocks and outperformance in their underweight position in industrials. Says ICICI Securities, “Data on aggregate sectoral institutional flows available during October 2023 indicates FPIs bought more of industrials while large selling was observed in financials. Also, quarterly corporate filing data on shareholding pattern indicates an uptick in small and midcap holdings and a dip in large cap holdings.” However, it is important to note that despite the recent sell-off, the overall FPI inflow for the year 2023 remains robust at $12 billion. This indicates that foreign investors still have confidence in the Indian market. India stands out compared to all other emerging markets, where FPIs have remained net sellers or have bought only marginally. Additionally, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have been actively investing in Indian equities, with overall domestic institutional flows reaching $20 billion in 2023 so far. Mutual funds have been particularly active, with net inflows of $17 billion. The aggregate holdings of FPIs currently stand at ₹54.5 trillion, representing 16.6% of the overall Indian equities as of November 2023. This is the lowest level since 2012. The drop in FPI holdings can be attributed to the sharp selling seen since September 2023, as well as the underperformance of their portfolio orientation. Recent activity by FPIs suggests a recalibration of their portfolio orientation. Data on aggregate sectoral institutional flows in October 2023 indicates that FPIs have been buying more industrials while selling off financial stocks. Additionally, quarterly corporate filing data on shareholding patterns shows an increase in small and midcap holdings and a decrease in large-cap holdings. On the other hand, domestic mutual funds continue to show buying interest across sectors, particularly in healthcare, private banks, other financial services, and industrials. However, selling was observed in PSU banks during October 2023. This indicates that domestic investors have a more optimistic outlook on certain sectors of the Indian market. Despite the volatility in the market, systematic investment plan (SIP) inflows have been steadily rising and have reached over $2 billion per month. This structural increase in SIP inflows demonstrates the long-term confidence of retail investors in the Indian equities market. In conclusion, the recent drop in FPI equity holdings in Indian stocks to a decade low is ironic considering the favorable fundamentals of the Indian economy. However, the robust overall FPI inflow for 2023 and the potential for a reversal in FPI holdings as yield spike fears recede and valuations become more reasonable provide hope for the Indian equities market. It is important to monitor the election-related uncertainty, which could add volatility to near-term flows.

FPI ownership of Indian equities drops to a decadal low of 16.6% in 2023, selloff triggered by portfolio underperformance & spike in US bond yields

<ul><li>India is a favoured investment destination for foreign investors, but it has not generated returns the way the US has.</li><li>India’s public markets are dominated by mid and small cap companies as scale is a problem.</li><li>Reliance and Adani (including newly acquired cement companies) now have the first and the third most highest weights in NIFTY100 at 9.7% and 4.3% respectively. Adani Group’s recent high increase in weightage is yet to be adapted by investors in their portfolios.</li></ul>India is a much loved market when it comes to <keyword id="6389755" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-portfolio-investors" source="Orion">foreign portfolio investors</keyword>. And this is evident from the inflows into equities after every crisis. This coupled with concentrated ownership of foreign investors have prevented any sharp fall in the benchmark indices over the years since the Global Financial Crisis. This does not mean that India is delivering outsized returns to investors, which perhaps explains the massive selling by FPIs since the end of last year, says Nitin Bhasin, co-head institutional equities and head of research at Ambit Capital. Edited Excerpts: The <keyword id="2931774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty50" source="Orion">Nifty50</keyword> is truly resilient in the face of headwinds but is it reflecting what is happening in India? As investors, we have missed the point that India is not outperforming the US in the last 10 years. We may have done well in the last six months but if you look at a decade then India has delivered an 11% CAGR over ten years. If you look at dollar returns, then India has not given more than 6.5-7%. This is less than the US market's returns. India has not generated outsized returns for foreign investors. India is a much loved market but it has not generated returns the way the US has! Why is this so? In India we look at the changes in the Nifty, we only look at the increase in market capitalisation but have these companies become large businesses in the last ten years? Now compare this with American companies which have gone out and built much larger global businesses. If you look at Google, Apple or Facebook, these companies have become world leaders. In India, companies have clocked profits but revenues have not grown at the same pace. Returns from Indian companies have come because these companies have become very expensive. If you look at smaller companies in the Nifty50, their multiples will be 2-2.5 times that of Nifty’s multiple. If you look at the benchmark index, it is dominated by financials at 35% and another 15% is accounted for by IT services. Auto, Oil &amp; Gas (largely Reliance) will together account for nearly 72%. You have lopsided earnings trading at a lower multiple and a small number of companies trading at very high multiples. Unless the mindset of the world changes its view and multiples of asset heavy companies increase, you have a challenge and why should Nifty’s returns be any different from the last 10 years? Finally, now a lot of Indian money is finally coming to Indian equities. But do we have the depth in the market? We see a lot of small companies coming to the public markets and there are very few large businesses coming to the market on a global scale. Our country’s listed space is dominated by mid and small caps which have a scalability challenge. You have a challenge of the past showing you that India has not beaten the US market and the Nifty is very lopsided. Are the foreign portfolio investors done selling in India? The month of June saw massive selling by foreign investors. If you look at foreign portfolio investors 85% of their holding would be in the top 100 stocks. I cannot hazard a guess if they are done selling. We don’t know what has happened that they have come back; perhaps a change of outlook or valuations in pockets becoming attractive. Or, reduced newsflow around challenges of crude or interest rates in India. However, we do not expect a similar intensity of selling seen in the preceding six months. But, we are still not out of a situation where one can bet that the markets have only one way to go– which is upwards. Both micro (earnings) and macro (global and Indian factors) situations look uncertain and tough in many pockets. We are not decisively moving towards a situation where the index will move only upwards in the near-term. India has neither become oversold nor is the market inexpensive. Given that China has its own issues, do you feel India’s capital markets could be a beneficiary of these developments? I don’t think India can benefit from what is happening in China. I doubt that large institutions that dedicatedly invest in China will move out and come to India. You are talking about two different sizes of markets as companies in China are very large which is not the case in India. China is a hotbed for internet consumption and electronics manufacturing. China has 35-40% weightage in a Global Emerging Market fund, while India’s is 10-12%. If an investor wants to buy stock in an electronics company for $100-200 million, do we have such opportunities in India? If you look at FPI ownership is it still concentrated in the top 10 stocks on the Nifty50? Will this polarisation continue? Polarisation has to increase for the time being. Reliance Industries continues to invest in its businesses – be it retail, O2C or Jio. If you see Adani Group then the promoters have emerged as the richest promoters from India over the last three or four years. They are entering new businesses. If I were an investor, I would soon note that 20-25% of Nifty100 of market cap is accounted for by Reliance and Adani Group. Then there is a large financial merger happening which could mean that perhaps a few handful of names will account for 40-45% of the index; hence high polarisation. Where do you see markets going in the near term? We are operating in a scenario which is a see-saw market. We have positive and negative forces for the Indian economy while we have less positive forces when it comes to external factors. The market will spend a lot of time oscillating between overvalued and under-valued zones, thanks to the risks. We are not in a situation where the markets can crash 20-30% and neither are we in a situation where we can say the market has reason to go up 20-30%. In this market, we can look at specific stocks on their business models and valuations. There is no clarity on energy prices and small imbalances can affect prices. In addition, our ability to export will be curtailed, if the US and Europe go into recession, the global consuming market will shrink. If investors have an appetite for risk and recession then money flow into India may continue but may not be with the same amount of buoyancy. What worries you about the domestic situation? Borrowing costs in India continues to remain high. We are caught in a 7-7.5% Gsec, which is very high. Inflation remains high too in India. India is still sitting on a large number of underemployed women. Unless we do something about our labour participation rate, things will not improve. The government is also behaving in a populist way rather than investing in infrastructure; perhaps that’s what is required with a large population. We are making slow progress as a country but we are not creating a massive consumption class beyond the top-20% of the population. What are the things working for us – formalisation, entrepreneurship and technology businesses (but are these being created for the world?) Unless our GDP growth picks up materially, how can we have good earnings growth? I don’t think we are sitting on the cusp of a definite bull market. What does a high weightage of Reliance and Adani mean for investors? Reliance and Adani (including newly acquired cement companies) now have the first and the third most highest weights in NIFTY100 at 9.7% and 4.3% respectively. Other two large group representations are Tatas at 7.7% and Bajaj at 4.2%. Whilst Reliance’s high weight is well known and adapted by investors, Adani Group’s recent high increase in weightage is yet to be adapted by investors in their portfolios. Given the experience of infrastructure developers’ poor past performance and concerns around Adani Group’s past capital allocation and high leverage plus the lack of awareness amongst investors would mean that institutional owners could remain underweight Adani names for some time until they understand management’s value creation vision. Beyond stocks and bonds: Understanding the PMS & AIF ecosystem in India

The combined holdings of domestic mutual funds and direct households in stocks have risen over 720 bps since 2015 whereas those of foreign portfolio investors (<keyword id="725142" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fpi" source="Orion">FPI</keyword>)have declined about 230 bps, <keyword id="48670" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="morgan-stanley" source="Orion">Morgan Stanley</keyword> said in a report. The last quarter alone saw a near 90 bps rise in domestic ownership while FPI ownership of sample of 75 companies fell 84 bps QoQ. At 25.6 per cent ownership of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s largest 75 companies, domestic investors are now larger holders than FPIs for the first time since 2010, the report said. Average sector positions went higher in the latest quarter led by domestic institutions albeit FPIs continue to run more active portfolios. FPIs are overweight on financials and lifted the relative position by 40 bps during the quarter after taking it down for five consecutive quarters. The position is still 540 bps below the peak of September 19. The biggest FPI selling happened in technology where they have gone underweight during the quarter, Morgan Stanley said. "FPIs are also underweight on consumer discretionary and industrials - distinct from our recommendations. While domestic institutions added to technology during the quarter, they remain underweight. They also added financials and consumer discretionary but are overweight on neither. They are overweight on communication services, consumer staples and utilities in divergence from our view.The only sector where we are in sync is industrials where we recently raised our weight," Morgan Stanley said. From among the top 20 aggregate institutional holdings, active positions (relative to the MSCI Index) rose the most for <keyword id="6357073" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="itc" source="Orion">ITC</keyword> and declined the most for <keyword id="10926" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reliance" source="Orion">Reliance</keyword> during the QE June 2022. Domestic mutual funds, retail investors now bigger equity holders than FPIs: MS

<ul><li><keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>, at 18.2% now, has the second highest weightage in <keyword id="20566089" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="msci-index" source="keywords">MSCI Index</keyword>, after China.</li><li>Nuvama expects this recent rejig by MSCI to bring in $1.2 billion in passive inflows from FIIs.</li><li>India’s corporate earnings growth, macroeconomic outlook and equity market performance are reasons for the upgrade, say experts.</li><li>Chinese markets’ relative underperformance and falling holdings of top emerging market (EM) funds in the market play to India’s advantage. </li></ul>India’s weightage in the MSCI Global Standard Index has been recalibrated to 18.2% by the index in its latest rejig. Not only is it at a historic high, it’s the second-highest weightage in the index after China, which is at 23%. Moreover, market watchers believe that it can go higher in the current calendar year itself. “With a consistent flow from domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and now if steady foreign institutional investors (FIIs) participation resumes, there is potential for India to surpass a 20% weightage in the MSCI EM Index by early 2024 itself,” said a report by Nuvama. <keyword id="20385487" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanjeev-hota" source="keywords">Sanjeev Hota</keyword>, vice president of research at Sharekhan also believes that India has room to go further in MSCI. “With China markets not performing, India is a good opportunity for FIIs, in terms of its corporate earnings growth and political stability,” he told Business Insider India. India's representation in the MSCI EM pack had been at around 8% from 2015 until October 2020. Since November 2020, its representation has nearly doubled. If one were to count it from 2012, when it was at around 6.6%, it has almost tripled, experts say. “This remarkable achievement can be attributed to multiple factors. India's standardized Foreign Ownership Limit (FOL) in 2020. Robust performance by Indian equities, particularly in the midcap segment, leading to numerous inclusions in every review,” said a report by Nuvama. The research firm expects as much as $1.2 billion of foreign institutional investor (FII) passive inflow into the markets, both in standard and smallcap index. Apart from funds, it will also bring further stability into Indian equities. “Increased MSCI weightage will lead to increased institutional holdings which are considered to be generally long term in nature. It will provide stability in prices over the long term,” says Apurva <keyword id="20059502" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sheth" source="keywords">Sheth</keyword>, head of market perspectives &amp; research at SAMCO Securities. India versus China Experts also attribute India’s ascension in index weightage to the relative underperformance of Chinese markets. The lowest daily average turnover on the stock market since 2019 was 790 billion yuan in 2023 as per Alchemy Capital Management. Over the past year, MSCI China declined by 25%, while MSCI India has increased by 31%. The recent liquidation of real estate major Evergrande will add more troubles to the banking sector as well. With the outlook continuing to be strong for India, we expect it to attract more money on its own merits, but China’s failures would only add fuel to the fire,” said Alok Agarwal, head quant &amp; portfolio manager, Alchemy Capital Management. If significant EM funds continue to pull out, China’s equity risk could prolong stagnation. India, on other hand, with its robust macroeconomic outlook, and the performance of equity markets could become a preferred opportunity, experts say. “India’s story has just started. Jalan Kalrock Consortium, the winning bidder for the revival of grounded carrier <keyword id="6358200" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jet-Airways" source="Orion">Jet Airways</keyword>, on Friday said it has infused an additional Rs 100 crore in the airline as per the court-approved resolution plan. With this, the consortium has "fulfilled" its total financial commitment of Rs 350 crore to revive the airline, which would pave the way for it to take over the ownership of Jey Airways, JKC (Jalan Kalrock Consortium) said in a statement. JKC also said it is expecting the airline to be up and running next year with the launch date likely to be announced in the next few days. Jet Airways has not flown since April 17, 2019. "Kalrock Consortium (JKC) today completed an additional infusion of 100 crore, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to a successful resurgence of Jet Airways," the consortium said in the statement. "With this infusion, JKC has now fulfilled its total financial commitment of Rs 350 crore equity as per the court-approved resolution plan, and all commitments by JKC now stand fulfilled to take control of the iconic airline," it added. It also said that the consortium's strategy to revive the airline remains unaltered. "The new promoters are determined to re-establish the operations of the airline up and running in 2024," it said and added that further announcements regarding the launch date of Jet Airways will now be made in the coming weeks.
