As the ambitious <keyword id="3204746" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="2030-Development-Agenda">2030 Development Agenda</keyword> is starting to be implemented, India has demanded that the priorities and needs of developing countries must be kept at the centre of attention. 
 "The 2030 Agenda including the <keyword id="879547" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sustainable-development-goals">Sustainable Development Goals</keyword> as well as the commitments contained in the <keyword id="3205079" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Addis-Ababa-Action-Agenda">Addis Ababa Action Agenda</keyword> must now be implemented expeditiously and in good faith," said <keyword id="882197" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Syed-Akbaruddin">Syed Akbaruddin</keyword>, India's new Permanent Representative to the UN. 
 
"In this process, the objectives, priorities and needs of the developing countries must remain the centre of attention, "Akbaruddin said. 
 He was speaking at the handover ceremony of the <keyword id="3205080" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="G77-Chairmanship">G77 Chairmanship</keyword> from South Africa to Thailand, which was his first speech at the world body after taking charge at the Permanent Mission of India here last week. He also said that if 2015 was a year of negotiation and deliberation, "2016 should be a time of consolidation and implementation." 
 He further added that India will be resolute in pushing for developing country unity and there would be no stone unturned to give special consideration to the interests of the <keyword id="484496" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="least-developed-countries">Least Developed Countries</keyword>, <keyword id="3205081" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Small-Island-Developing-States">Small Island Developing States</keyword> and <keyword id="3205082" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Landlocked-Developing-Countries">Landlocked Developing Countries</keyword>.

"This year there are heightened expectations for the directions the United Nations development system can take to support Agenda 2030. The test for success will always remain what happens on the ground," the UN Chief said. 
 
"We need to get this right so that our operational and normative work can converge and make a difference where it matters most -- at the country level," he added.

India wants priorities of developing nations to be the centre of attention of 2030 Development Agenda

Gandhinagar, <keyword id="7706673" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance-minister-nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> said on Wednesday exuded confidence that India will become the world's third largest economy worth over USD 5 trillion by 2027-28 and a developed nation by 2047, with GDP touching USD 30 trillion. India, with a GDP of roughly USD 3.4 trillion, is currently the fifth largest economy in the world, after the US, China, Japan and Germany. Sitharaman said during the Amritkal, which will mark 100 years of India's Independence in 2047, emphasis is being given to sunrise industries. Also, the FDI policy of the Narendra Modi Government has helped attract foreign investment, with USD 595 billion coming in the last 9 years. "It is possible that we will be the third largest economy by 2027-28, and our GDP will cross USD 5 trillion by that time. By 2047, it is a conservative estimate that we will reach at least USD 30 trillion in terms of economy," Sitharaman said while addressing a seminar of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024. Stressing that the people of India have met with the challenges post-COVID and recovery is on a strong footing, she said Gujarat will be the engine of growth in India's march to become a developed economy by 2047. The state has 5 per cent of India's population but contributes 8.5 per cent to the country's GDP. It is rapidly moving forward at 12 per cent CAGR (annual growth) between 2011 and 2021 against a national average of 10.4 per cent, the Union <keyword id="6355261" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance-minister" source="Orion">Finance Minister</keyword> said. Sitharaman said India is on track to become an in-house producer of semiconductors, and EV adoption is happening in a big way. All of these are the result of the FDI policy being pursued by the government. Between April 2000 and March 2023, in 23 years, India has attracted USD 919 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI). 65 per cent of this, or USD 595 billion, has come in the last 8-9 years, Sitharaman said. "FDI is coming in... where policies bring in greater certainty, convenience, ease of doing business, FDI flows in. Of course, disruptions of higher US Fed rate and other things can divert it elsewhere. But despite that, we have been receiving that kind of flow of the FDI. It is not as if it's coming only for manufacturing, it is coming in the service sector (as well)," she said. Speaking about financial inclusion, Sitharaman said 80 per cent of people have bank accounts. The number of bank account holders increased to 50 crore from 15 crore in 2014.

India to be third largest economy by FY28, a developed nation by 2047: FM

<keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> came in at 133rd out of 156 countries in the <a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/happiness-report/2018/WHR_web.pdf">UN’s World Happiness Report </a>for 2018. The annual report, which is authored by the Sustainable <keyword id="6355210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Development">Development</keyword> Solutions Network, ranked India 122nd last year and 118th the year before that. India was outranked by all of its neighbours in the latest report -- Sri Lanka (116), Bangladesh (115), Nepal (101) Bhutan (97), China (86) and surprisingly, Pakistan (75), which had the highest ranking in the Indian subcontinent. In fact, the only other countries in Asia that scored lower than India were war-torn Afghanistan (145), Syria (150) and Yemen (151). Globally, the list was topped by Finland, while Norway and Denmark came in at second and third, respectively. The report primarily assesses a country on six different variables that are deemed to correlate with <keyword id="6358439" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="happiness">happiness</keyword> -- income per person, life expectancy, freedom of choice, generosity, perception of corruption and social support. Of these, only two variables, GDP per capita and healthy life expectancy, can be easily calculated. Since the remaining variables are qualitative in nature, they are largely determined through Gallup surveys of around 2000 to 3000 residents of each country for the preceding three years. The seventh variable, dystopia, measures a country’s performance on each of the six factors against a hypothetical country with the lowest national averages of each. The idea of national happiness gained prominence after the prime minister of Bhutan, which came in at 97th on this year’s list, highlighted the concept of a gross domestic happiness index to the <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword> in <a href="http://www.un.org/press/en/2011/ga11116.doc.htm">July 2011</a>. The first UN-sponsored World Happiness Report was subsequently released in 2012. While India hasn’t experimented with the measurement of gross national happiness, the state of Madhya Pradesh did establish a ministry of happiness in 2016 which was mainly tasked with running programmes for community service, volunteerism and psychological counselling. However, the state’s mandate to spread happiness was dealt a huge blow in December last year, when the minister for happiness, Lal Singh Arya, was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Indias-first-ever-happiness-minister-is-wanted-on-murder-charges/articleshow/62069829.cms">found to be a suspect</a> in the murder of an opposition politician in 2009.

All of India's neighbours are happier than India, according to a UN report

When it comes to Sustainable Development Goals, India ranks quite low in the index. Out of 149 countries, India ranked at 110th spot as per a new index. 
 
Sweden topped the Sustainable Development Goals. 
 
The index was launched by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Bertelsmann Stiftung. 
 
The index collected available data for 149 countries to assess where each country stands in 2016 with regard to achieving the SDGs. 
 
It ranks countries based on their performance across the 17 global goals, a set of ambitious objectives across the three dimensions of sustainable development - economic development, social inclusion and environmental sustainability, underpinned by good governance. 
 
The index helps countries identify priorities for early actions and shows that every country faces major challenges in achieving the SDGs. 
 
"The Sustainable Development Goals are stretch goals, but they are within reach if countries work towards them with clarity and determination. The SDG Index and Dashboard can help each country to chart out a practical path for achieving the Goals," said SDSN Director Jeffrey Sachs. 
 
The countries which are closest to fulfilling the goals are not the biggest economies but comparably small, developed countries. 
Sweden tops the chart and is followed by Denmark and Norway on the top three performing countries. 
 
Germany (6) and the UK(10) are the only G7 countries to be found among the top ten performers. The US ranks 25th on the index, while Russia and China rank 47th and 76th respectively. 
 
India ranks 110th on the list followed by Lesotho on 113th position, Pakistan (115), Myanmar (117), Bangladesh (118) and Afghanistan (139). Poor and <keyword id="54124" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="developing-countries">developing countries</keyword> understandably score lowest on the SDG Index as they often have comparably little resources at their disposal. 
The Central African Republic and Liberia are at the bottom of the Index and still have the longest way to go in achieving the SDGs. 
 
A year after world leaders adopted the SDGs, the new index shows that all countries face major challenges in achieving these ambitious goals by 2030. 
 
No country has achieved the SDGs and even top Sweden scores "red" on several goals. 
 
The report shows how leaders can deliver on their promise and urges countries not to lose the momentum for important reforms. 
In order to achieve the ambitious goals, immediate and comprehensive action is needed in the crucial first years of implementation of the new global agenda, it noted. 
 
The report highlights major challenges per region: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries struggle to meet the goals on inequality, sustainable consumption, climate change and ecosystems, while many developing countries face major difficulties in providing basic social services and infrastructure access to their populations. 
 
East and South Asia outperform many other developing regions but unmet challenges persist in health and education. 
 
For Latin America and the Caribbean, high levels of inequality are among the most pressing issues. 
 
In spite of significant progress in recent years in Sub-Saharan Africa, the world's poorest region faces major challenges across almost all SDGs, with extreme poverty, hunger and health as major areas where substantial improvement is needed.

Out of 149 nations, India is at 110th spot on Sustainable Development Goals index

Sooner than later, there are few things that would inevitably change for <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. For starters, it will no longer be known as third world country. The multicultural nation will embark on a journey to claim its ‘developed’ nation status from that of the ‘developing’ country. The economic growth, as per the experts, will reach a balanced state despite the aggression we see in the markets. 
 
The political scenario in the country has changed since the last seven months. There has been a change in the mood of the nation, in those political parties which claimed leadership till now, and even in ideologies that led them. 
 Today, in the changed situation, when the nation gazes at its tomorrow, things look brighter than they were before for various reasons. Now, will India be a ‘<keyword id="1091203" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="super-power">super power</keyword>’ is a question that seeks an appropriate answer. But, we need to define the borders for this term—‘super power’. 
What makes a country a superpower per se? 
 
Is it the economic prowess? Is it the presence of human resources in abundance? Is it the modern outlook that a country possesses as a nation? Or is it the self-sufficiency? Food security or nuclear power and defense forces? What is the main thing that comes around to frame the answer? 
 
Or, is it a combination of all these aspects that makes a country a superpower? 
 
The world contemplates many answers. While experts in each of these areas would pin it down to one thing, will India’s march towards ‘superpower-dom’ be a smooth sail? 
 
Recently, former member of Indian planning commission Saumitra Chauduri delivered a lecture on this topic in Mumbai and demolished the myths surrounding the term. 
 
“India will never be a superpower and is unlikely to become one in near future,” he said while elaborating on the lecture which focused on realising India’s potential in the current scenario. 
 
 
Superpower: Aspiration or reality? 
When India is poised to be on the throes of being identified as a nation that’s going to play a prominent role in the near future, is the status of being a super power an aspiration or reality? While young Indians who constitute the majority of its population want it to emerge as a superpower in the coming years, being a super power is an aspect that seems more like romance with the tag than the real image. 
 
Economy: The chief maker? 
In a survey done recently by London’s independent think tank Legatum Institute some respondents reacted positively to this focused question. They felt India would be an ‘important’ economic superpower by the end of the decade. Now, this makes it a hazier picture than bringing in clarity on the issue. 
 
Growth across sectors 
With the new and aggressive government at the helm of affairs, India is certainly looking at concrete steps that can be taken to ensure the growth across sectors both government and private be managed well. Right now, the government isn’t as aggressive as it should have been, in the last six decades as far as policies to promote businesses were concerned. Globalisation and liberalisation apart, India has, within its own structure, seen paced out growth. But, now emphasis looks high on private participation which could accelerate the progress trajectory. But then again, this is an anticipated result than a surefire outcome. 
 
Emerging market 
If a country is defined by its market potential, India is second only to China in the world for the simple reason that it is the second most populated country in the world. No prizes for guessing the first one. Educated middle class, technology penetration and integration into services, hospitality industry and businesses are thriving right now in India. It holds great potential to the new tomorrow where the country turns into a huge market for new players and trends. 
 
Nuclear superpower 
If diplomatic relations are anything to go by, India is the place to understand the importance of a nation being a nuclear superpower. Soon, the country will increase its spending on defense and take strong steps to ensure its security – on both land and food for its population. 
In that sense, India is truly a superpower that’s going to be a model for the other nations to emulate, given the fact that most of its middle class population will integrate itself into this march to claim the title. 
 
Technology superpower The country carried out a successful <keyword id="164562" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mars-mission">Mars mission</keyword> within frugal budget. This aspect stands as an important indicator of India’s unabated march in claiming the space in space technology. India is also being a prominent player in the trend of e-Commerce which is currently surging world over. 
 However, its poverty levels, and the hungry stomachs that will still make into the charts of various headers of <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword> statistics may actually cost India its image in some sense.

India A Super Power: Close To Reality Or Fantasy?

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=world+bank&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">World Bank</a> has decided to do away with old nomenclature of ‘developed and developing’ nations based on their prosperity and is giving new classification to countries with more precision. 
 
Until now, India was known as a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=developing+nation&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">developing nation</a> but now it will be known as 'lower-middle income country/South Asia'. 
 <keyword id="6354424" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Bank">World Bank</keyword> has given this nomenclature to be more specific. 
 
For example, India, Malawi and Mexico may be hardly comparable even if a few economic and social parameters overlap. 
 
Till now, developing stood for low-and middle-income countries while high-income countries were called 'developed'. 
 
Also, Mexico, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=china&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">China</a> and Brazil will be called 'upper-middle income'; India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=lower+middle+income&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">'lower-middle income'</a>. 
 
World Bank data states that India languishes on many indicators such as labour force participation rate, electricity generation and access to improved sanitation facilities. 
 
Time required to start a business in India was 29 days in June 2015 against the global average of 20 days. 
 
After this decision, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=United+Nations&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">United Nations</a> may also follow suit. 
 
Under the UN's current classification, all of Europe and Northern America along with Japan, Australia and New Zealand are classified as developed regions, and all other regions are developing.

Our message to the other partners is the same as it's always been, which is we want to make sure that we're all pulling on the same oars here to get Afghanistan to that better future," Kirby said. 
 
"But the way that gets done is by healthy, strong institutions inside Afghanistan to include security forces, which is of course the focus of the Resolute Support mission. Right now help <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=afghan+forces" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Afghan National Security Forces</a> continue their leadership of the security mission inside Afghanistan," he said.

By Yoshita Singh United Nations, Jun 12 () India has underscored its commitment to assist the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) as they deal with the "double blows" of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change which has also impacted the tourism sector in the scenic islands. The SIDS are islands of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. They are relatively remote, vulnerable to environmental challenges, such as climate change, and generally small in size. India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti during a first virtual ambassadorial meeting of the Steering Committee on partnership for SIDS this week, said the COVID-19 pandemic has flattened the planet in terms of its impact and distress caused but it has impacted disproportionately on countries and regions, particularly on the SIDS. "The COVID-19 pandemic flattened the planet in terms of its impact and distress caused. But it has impacted disproportionately on countries and regions, particularly on SIDS….In many ways, COVID-19 and climate change have come as a double blow for SIDS," Tirumurti said. Citing the impact of the pandemic on the tourism sector, which he said has come to a complete halt, Tirumurti noted that the devastation has been far more for SIDS for whom the sector accounts for almost 30 per cent of the GDP. "India stands ready to partner and is already partnering with the SIDS. We are fully conscious of your priorities and your requirements. We will do our best to see how we can partner you in this quest," he said. Tirumurti highlighted India's efforts to assist the SIDS nations in dealing with the impact of COVID-19 and climate change. He said India is assisting the SIDS partners to combat COVID-19 under the India-UN Development Partnership Fund, which was established in 2017 to provide for assistance to developing countries, including Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and SIDS for projects that contribute to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals. India is also committed to assist its SIDS partners to tackle the impact of climate change, he said, adding that a regional initiative was launched in Suva on Wednesday under the India Fund which will see Solar Photovoltaic systems installed on buildings of national significance in Fiji, Micronesia, Palau, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. India is also partnering with the SIDS in the area of capacity building, Tirumurti said. "We have agreed to set up an Institute for Sustainable Coastal and Ocean Research, a network of marine biology research stations, and the setting up of IT laboratories for Pacific Island states." India had organised the first India-PSIDS and India-CARICOM leaders' meeting in New York last year when New Delhi had announced a USD 26 million grant to CARICOM nations and Pacific Small Island Developing States for high impact developmental projects in the areas of their choice. CARICOM stands for the Caribbean Community and Common Market and is an organisation made up of 15 Caribbean nations to promote economic integration among members. In addition, a Concessional Lines of Credit of $300 million was announced which can be availed for undertaking inter alia, solar, renewable energy and climate related projects based on each country's priorities, he said.
