Cisco, in a separate announcement, said it aims to train 500,000 cybersecurity professionals over 3 years across India. Cisco's first-ever Cybersecurity Readiness Index highlighted where businesses are doing well and where cybersecurity readiness gaps will widen if global business and security leaders don't take action. Underlining that readiness is critical, the Cisco study revealed that 90 per cent of respondents said they expect a cybersecurity incident to disrupt their business in the next 12 to 24 months. India scored high in the global chart in terms of maturity (24 per cent), performing above the global average of 15 per cent on cybersecurity readiness. About 38 per cent of companies in India fall into the beginner or formative stages. Conducted by an independent third party, the survey asked 6,700 private sector cybersecurity leaders across 27 markets to indicate which of the solutions they had deployed and the stage of deployment. Companies were then classified into four stages of increasing readiness -- beginner, formative, progressive and mature. While beginner (overall score of less than 10 star) implies the initial stages of deployment of solutions, formative (score between 11 - 44) have some level of deployment but performing below average on cybersecurity readiness. In the index, progressive (score between 45 - 75) meant considerable level of deployment and performing above average on cybersecurity readiness, whereas mature (score of 76 and higher) have achieved advanced stages of deployment and are most ready to address security risks. While organisations in India are faring better than the global average, the number is still very low, given the risks. According to Cisco, this readiness gap is telling, not least because 90 per cent of respondents said they expect a cybersecurity incident to disrupt their business in the next 12 to 24 months. The cost of being unprepared can be substantial as 80 per cent of respondents said they had a cybersecurity incident in the last 12 months, and 53 per cent of those affected said it cost them at least USD 500,000. "Cybersecurity is a top priority for businesses as they continue their digitisation journey. The job analytics database of GlobalData, a data and analytics company, showed a notable shift in the pharmaceutical industry as companies are increasingly prioritising the adoption of emerging technologies and stringent compliance measures to safeguard against cyber threats and data breaches. An analysis of Company Filing Analytics Database revealed that cybersecurity dominated pharma industry discussions during Q2 2023 as well amid the push for digital transformation. "The growing digital engagement, coupled with the rising occurrence of data breaches, has prompted pharma companies to place a heightened emphasis on roles geared towards minimising enterprise risks. These roles aim to advocate privacy measures and develop cybersecurity strategies that enhance the comprehension of privacy-related risks linked to emerging technologies," said Misa Singh, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData, in a statement. In August, the global pharmaceutical industry experienced a 19 per cent rise in new job postings related to cybersecurity in Q2 2023 compared with the previous quarter, the report said. "In an era where data is the lifeblood of the pharmaceutical industry, the shift towards embracing technology and fortifying cybersecurity measures is not just a strategic move but a critical imperative. Cybersecurity jobs in pharma sector up at 34% CAGR since 2020: Report

According to <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/global-economics/china-hacking-concern-revives-india-focus-on-cybersecurity-plan">Bloomberg</a>, the new rules will be approved by the cabinet committee on security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Considering the fluid nature of cyberattacks, the law should enable collaborative efforts amongst states and union territories of the country and also at a cross-jurisdiction level," explained Supratim Chakraborty, a partner at Khaitan &amp; Co. More importantly, experts are hoping that this time the regulations will have a little more bite in order to be effective against <keyword id="119065" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyber-threat">cyber threat</keyword>s. “India's cyber threat canvas has evolved and now includes persistent and penetrating attacks targeting India's national and commercial computer networks,” Sameer Patil, a defence expert with Mumbai-based think tank Gateway House told Business Insider. The move to set up a new system comes amid increasing reports of hackers from other countries targeting users in India and the country’s critical infrastructure. India needs a cybersecurity policy with more bite Pankit Desai, chief executive and co-founder of Sequretek, a Mumbai-based cybersecurity firm, feels that India’s critical infrastructure has already opened India to a Trojan horse situation. He thinks that the only way for any new policy to be effective is to have more bite than bark. “We don’t need frameworks, there are enough of them that already exist. What we need is an institution with teeth that will force these entities to step up their security investments much like what RBI [Reserve Bank of India] did for banks,” he told Business Insider. It has been eight years since India’s cybersecurity framework was first unveiled, but not much has been done in terms of creating a coordinated approach to address cyber threats — especially when it comes to the country’s critical infrastructure. “The response to a cyber threat should be at least as coordinated as the emergency response to the floods in Uttarakhand last month,” Avimukt Dar, founding member and senior partner at IndusLaw, told Business Insider. The private sector has a key role to play The question isn’t only about coordination between public stakeholders, but private ones too. According to Dar, companies and businesses will only report any kind of cyber incidents if they get something in return. “Until and unless companies are being held to ransom, the details don’t come out — we saw this last year,” he said. Not sharing data can leave behind a gaping hole of information. According to Singapore-based cybersecurity firm Cyfirma, cyber intelligence sharing is critical for players within a specific industry or a group of companies in order to fight cybercrime, effectively. “This can create a common repository of known threats, malware, attack vectors and methods, giving organisations additional ammunition to mount more effective defence strategies. Over 98% organisations in the country have shortages in their security operations staffing, said a new report on Thursday. <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> reports the strongest concern in comparison to its global peers when it comes to tackling the increased volume of cyberthreats and security incidents, said the report by software company Micro Focus. "As a fast-developing economy, India is witnessing a rapid adoption of digital tools and services within its enterprise ecosystem," Praveen Patil, Country Manager -- Security, Risk &amp; Governance Micro Focus, India, said in a statement. "The unprecedented adoption of cloud is also giving rise to newer vulnerabilities and cybersecurity challenges." In fact, India takes the lead when it comes to cloud adoption, with every surveyed organisation having at least some sort of cloud deployment, according to the "2020 State of Security Operations" report which details the various cybersecurity issues faced by security operations centres (SOCs) across the globe. Across the globe over 96 per cent of organisations use the <keyword id="10152072" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cloud-for-it-security">Cloud for IT security</keyword> operations, and on average nearly two-thirds of their IT security operations software and services are already deployed in the Cloud. During the pandemic, security operations teams have faced many challenges. The biggest has been the increased volume of cyberthreats and security incidents - 45 per cent globally -- followed by higher risks due to workforce usage of unmanaged devices - 40 percent globally. India is the top country that reports this as the biggest challenge along with 51 per cent increased challenge of investigating or remediating incidents, said the report. For the study, Micro Focus, in partnership with CyberEdge Group, developed a 15-question web-based survey. The survey involved 410 security operations professionals in the US, the UK, Germany, India, and Japan in August. India faces talent crunch for cyber threat detection even as it leads in cloud adoption

<ul><li>India’s cybersecurity <keyword id="53650" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="watchdog">watchdog</keyword>, <keyword id="448001" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CERT-In">CERT-In</keyword>, has warned users about the ‘high’ number of vulnerabilities to WhatsApp and <keyword id="4936066" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="whatsapp-business">WhatsApp Business</keyword>’ older versions.</li><li>Meanwhile, malware disguised as an offer to turn WhatsApp’s traditional green into pink or gold is also making the rounds in group chats. </li><li>Users are recommended to keep their WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business mobile apps up to date and report to the company if they come across any suspicious links.</li></ul>The Indian cybersecurity watchdog, Cert-In, has issued a ‘high’ severity rating against WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. According to the vulnerability note, the emergency response team has found ‘multiple’ vulnerabilities within the mobile apps. And these loopholes could allow hackers to gain access to sensitive information about you. “Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code or access sensitive information on a target system,” <a href="https://cert-in.org.in/">said the note</a>. However, this is only an issue for users still running an old version of WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business. If your app is up to date, then your information should be safe. But that’s not it. A new threat has been making the rounds over group chat. The link entices users by offering to turn the WhatsApp interface from its traditional green color to a shade of pink as well as new features. A password with six characters, including passwords that have numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and symbols, can be cracked instantly. As per the study, passwords with more than 18 characters are ideal against AI tools. Even if you use just numbers, it will take an AI tool ten months to crack the password. AI chatbots are cracking the code: How PassGAN can break into 51% of common passwords in under a minute

<ul><li>The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that it will be putting in new cybersecurity guidelines for urban cooperative banks (UCBs) by 31 December 2019. </li><li>The central bank said that it wants to bring UCBs at par with commercial banks. </li><li>A graded approach has been proposed where the level of security measures will vary according to a bank's digital depth, product offerings, and other factors. </li></ul>India's central bank has announced that it's going to bring in more cybersecurity guidelines for urban cooperative banks (UCBs) — to make sure that they measure up to their commercial counterparts. “This would bolster cybersecurity preparedness and ensure that the UCBs offering a range of payment services and higher information technology (IT) penetration are brought at par with commercial banks in addressing cybersecurity threats,” stated the Reserve Bank of India (<a href="https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/BS_PressReleaseDisplay.aspx?prid=48803">RBI</a>) in a monetary policy committee review today. Banking is becoming more 'boundary-less' in the era of digitisation and as more data is shared online, the number of threats is growing as well. The central bank already introduced baseline controls back in October, last year. Details of the new guidelines will be announced on 31 December 2019. More digital products mean more security guidelines RBI's new 'comprehensive cybersecurity framework' has been proposed as a graded approach. This means that security measures will vary according to a UCB's digital depth, interconnectedness with other payment systems, digital products offered and overall cybersecurity risk. As the nature, variety, and scale of digital offerings increases, more stringent security measures will have to be put in place. Proposed cybersecurity measures Even though the RBI didn't go into details about its new security measures for UCBs, it did disclose that future regulations will include implementing bank-specific email domains. The easiest way for hackers to obtain sensitive data about a user is through phishing emails. They send out emails with misleading links to lure victims to giving away passwords and bank details. Bank specific email domains allow users to tell the difference between a bank's official site and fraudulent sites. A dedicated URL will give users the option to rely on their own avenues of accessing a bank's online payment service — rather than accidentally share their account information on a phishing site. The new measures will also include the periodic security assessment of public-facing websites and applications. Earlier this year, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/finance/rbi-asks-indian-banks-to-probe-alleged-data-leak-of-1-3-million-cards/articleshow/71837356.cms?from=mdr">Group-IB</a> — based out of Singapore — reported that credit card numbers of nearly 1.3 million Indian bank customers were being sold on the dark web. And, according to the most recent data from the Data Security Council of India (DSCI), India is a prominent target for cyber attacks. Between 2016 to 2018, India was the second most affected country by cybersecurity threats. Periodic security assessment of UCB's website and apps will catch new threats and plug previously undetected loopholes. Other proposed regulations include strengthening the cybersecurity incident reporting mechanism, strengthening of the governance framework and setting up a Security Operations Center.
