By Yoshita Singh United Nations, Apr 16 () WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has welcomed the world health body's cooperation with India to leverage strategies that helped the country win its war against polio into the response to COVID-19 outbreak, saying such joint efforts will help defeat the pandemic.The World Health Organization (WHO) has said it will work with India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to leverage the strategies that helped the country eradicate polio to fight the pandemic.The WHO's national polio surveillance network will be engaged to strengthen COVID-19 surveillance and its field staff will continue to support immunization and elimination of tuberculosis and other diseases."Great news: @MoHFW_INDIA &amp; @WHOSEARO initiated a systematic engagement of @WHO's national polio surveillance network, and other field staff, for India's #COVID19 response, tapping into the best practices &amp; resources that helped win its war against polio," the WHO director-general tweeted, referring to India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and World Health Organization Regional Office for South-East Asia.According to the Johns Hopkins University data, over 2 million people are infected by the virus and more than 136,000 people have died of the disease globally.Ghebreyesus expressed gratitude to Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan "for his leadership and collaboration" with WHO. "Through these joint efforts we can defeat the #coronavirus and save lives. Together!"India eliminated polio in 2014.According to a WHO press release, Vardhan said in New Delhi that "time and again the Government of India and WHO together have shown our ability, competence and prowess to the whole world. With our combined meticulous work, done with full sincerity and dedication, we were able to get rid of polio.""All of you in the field – IDSP (Integrated Disease Surveillance Project), state rapid response teams and WHO - are our 'surveillance corona warriors'. With your joint efforts we can defeat the coronavirus and save lives," Vardhan added.WHO South-East Asia Regional Director Poonam Khetrapal Singh said the National Polio Surveillance Project (WHO-NPSP) played a critical role in strengthening surveillance for polio that generated useful, timely and accurate data to guide policies, strategies and interventions until transmission of the poliovirus was interrupted in the country," adding that the other WHO field staff involved with elimination of tuberculosis and neglected tropical diseases and hypertension control initiative were also significant resources.Singh added that "it is now time to use all your experience, knowledge and skills, with the same rigor and discipline that you showed while monitoring polio activities, to support districts with surveillance, contact tracing and containment activities."The WHO release said strengths of the NPSP team – surveillance, data management, monitoring and supervision, and responding to local situations and challenges – will be utilized to supplement efforts of National Centre for Disease Control, IDSP and Indian Council of Medical Research to strengthen COVID-19 surveillance.The NPSP team will also support in sharing information and best practices and help states and districts calibrate their response based on transmission scenarios and local capacities.The WHO field staff will continue to support immunization and surveillance and elimination of Tuberculosis and Neglected Tropical Diseases, Singh said, adding, "disease outbreaks can negatively impact progress in a range of areas, from maternal and child mortality to vaccine-preventable diseases and other treatable conditions. <ul><li>India and China have deployed more troops along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh amid the coronavirus lockdown and worldwide pandemic. </li><li>Chinese media blames India stating, “India is merely seeking to divert its domestic attention.” </li><li>The development comes are two alterations along the Indo-Sino border — one in Ladakh and another in Sikkim — were reported earlier this month. </li></ul>Tensions between China and India are flaring up again as both countries try and establish their dominance in the Galwan Valley region. Both countries have reinforced troop deployment along the disputed border in eastern Ladakh, reported <a href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1188681.shtml#.XsKVoTpuzm8.twitter">TOI.</a> India fears this could turn into a flashpoint with Chinese troops pitching tents near the river and kicking off fresh construction, according to the report. There has been no immediate reaction from the Indian Army or the Ministry of External Affairs on these reports. Not surprisingly, the Chinese media is blaming India. “India is merely seeking to divert its domestic attention and pressure since the COVID-19 pandemic impacted its economy,” analysts told <a href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1188681.shtml#.XsKVoTpuzm8.twitter">Global Times</a>. Experts in China believe that this won’t turn into another standoff like the one in Doklam in 2017. This is not the first flare-up this month The 4,057-kilometer Line of Actual Control (LAC) is a recurring issue for both countries. And, such skirmishes aren’t uncommon and most pass off peacefully. However, earlier this month on <a href="https://www.deccanchronicle.com/nation/current-affairs/120520/chinese-helicopters-spotted-in-eastern-ladakh-along-india-china-border.html">May 5</a>, there was a violent clash between the Indian Army and the China People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in the northern part of Pangong Tso lake that left many injured — on both sides. Such physical altercations are rare. On <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/world/sino-india-border-clashes-china-says-its-troops-committed-to-uphold-peace-6405130/">May 9</a>, another standoff occurred along the border in North Sikkim — an area where no alterations have been reported in recent years. Indian soldiers formed a human chain to stand their ground as Chinese soldiers tried to push them back. Once reinforcements arrived, fistfights and pelting of stones ensued. “The Indian side remains committed to the objective of maintaining peace and tranquillity in the India-China border areas,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/india-highlights-need-for-peace-and-tranquillity-on-border-with-china-following-clashes/story-a7LJyIsMOREpxXAQPCWlEL.html">Anurag Srivastava</a> said on May 14. Both of the recent incidents, in Lakadh and Sikkim, will likely be discussed at the next border meeting between the two armies. The Line of Actual Control The central point of contention is that Beijing does not recognise India’s border with Tibet that was demarcated before 1947 by the British and Tibetan authorities. China maintains that Tibet is an integral part of its territory and the demarcation was not sanctioned by the Chinese rulers at the time. India, on the other hand, disputes that claim saying that many areas were ceded by Tibet to British India. The terrain along the border is largely inhospitable with snowy deserts, sandy expanses and intermittent rocks jutting from the ground. As a result, the LAC doesn’t have a fence or any physical infrastructure to dictate where India’s territory ends — and China’s begins. Ordinarily, both sides patrol the border. The soldiers are usually unarmed or carry only small weapons. Protocol dictates that even if they come face-to-face, they need to ensure that weapons should be positioned in a non-aggressive manner with nozzles facing the ground. In other instances, a crossing of paths leads to ‘banner drills’. Either side displays banners proclaiming that the particular area belongs to them. While Chinese banners are normally in English or Hindi, the one’s displayed by India are in Mandarin or English. They last a couple of hours before both sides taper off after a Major or a Lieutenant Colonel intervenes. Amidst a pandemic, both China and India have reportedly deployed troops in Ladakh as tensions flare up along the border

Mumbai, Mar 31 () The government on Tuesday announced setting up of a "cargo air-bridge" between India and China, and said that regular cargo flights for transporting critical medical supplies between the two countries are likely to be operated by Air India from April 3. In an official release, the civil aviation ministry also said it has operated as many as 62 cargo services in the past five days, starting March 26, under its recently launched 'Lifeline Udan flights' initiative, transporting over 15.4 tonnes of essential medical supplies. The initiative is aimed at ferrying medical and essential supplies from one place to another across the country. "On the international front, Air India has established a cargo air-bridge between India and China. Regular cargo flights for transporting critical medical equipment and supplies between the two countries are likely to be operated by Air India from April 3, 2020 onwards," the ministry said. The Lifeline Udan flights are being operated using the hub-and-spoke model, with New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata serving as the four hubs. Of the 62 flights, as many as 45 flights have been operated by the flag carrier Air India and its regional arm, Alliance Air, while the rest 17 by the Indian Air Force and private carriers IndiGo and SpiceJet, the release said. It also said Air India and IAF collaborated for operating Lifeline Udan services to Ladakh. Private carriers like IndiGo, Spicejet and BlueDart are operating medical cargo flights on a commercial basis, it stated. The lifeline cargo includes COVID-19-related reagents, enzymes, medical equipment, testing kits, personal protective equipment (PPE), masks, gloves and other accessories required by "Corona Warriors" across the country. The carriers involved in Lifeline Udan operations include Air India, Alliance Air, Indian Air Force (IAF) and Pawan Hans, the release said adding that it is also getting support from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and its cargo and logistics subsidiary AAICLAS, AI Airports Services (AIASL), PPP airports and private ground handling entities, among others. The civil aviation ministry and all aviation stakeholders are determined to support India's war against COVID-19 by transporting essential medical supplies by air in the most efficient, seamless and cost-effective manner, it said.
