India puts curbs on laptop and tablet imports – here’s how it could impact you

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (<keyword id="41780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iisc" source="Orion">IISc</keyword>) have developed a brain-inspired analog computing platform capable of storing and processing <keyword id="6355729" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="data" source="Orion">data</keyword> in an astonishing 16,500 conductance states within a molecular film. Published on September 11 in the journal Nature, this breakthrough represents a huge step forward over traditional digital computers in which data storage and processing are limited to just two states, the IISc s<keyword id="6355999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ai" source="Orion">ai</keyword>d. In a press release, the institute said that such a platform could potentially bring complex AI tasks, like training Large Language Models (LLMs), to personal devices like laptops and smartphones, thus taking us closer to democratising the development of AI tools. These developments are currently restricted to resource-heavy data centres, due to a lack of energy-efficient hardware. With silicon electronics nearing saturation, designing brain-inspired accelerators that can work alongside silicon chips to deliver faster, more efficient AI is also becoming crucial. "Neuromorphic computing has had its fair share of unsolved challenges for over a decade," explained <keyword id="23122611" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sreetosh-goswami" source="keywords">Sreetosh Goswami</keyword>, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE), IISc, who led the research team. "With this discovery, we have almost nailed the perfect system - a rare feat," he said. According to IISc, the fundamental operation underlying most AI algorithms is quite basic - matrix multiplication, a concept taught in high school maths. But in digital computers, these calculations hog a lot of energy. The platform developed by the IISc team drastically cuts down both the time and energy involved, making these calculations a lot faster and easier. The molecular system at the heart of the platform was designed by <keyword id="23122609" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sreebrata-goswami" source="keywords">Sreebrata Goswami</keyword>, Visiting Professor at CeNSE. As molecules and ions wiggle and move within a material film, they create countless unique memory states, many of which have been inaccessible so far. Most digital devices are only able to access two states (high and low conductance), without being able to tap into the infinite number of intermediate states possible. By using precisely timed voltage pulses, the IISc team found a way to effectively trace a much larger number of molecular movements, and map each of these to a distinct electrical signal, forming an extensive "molecular diary" of different states. "This project brought together the precision of electrical engineering with the creativity of chemistry, letting us control molecular kinetics very precisely inside an electronic circuit powered by nanosecond voltage pulses," explained Goswami. "Tapping into these tiny molecular changes allowed the team to create a highly precise and efficient neuromorphic accelerator, which can store and process data within the same location, similar to the human brain. Such accelerators can be seamlessly integrated with silicon circuits to boost their performance and energy efficiency," the IISc said. IISc researchers said the key challenge that the team faced was characterising the various conductance states, which proved impossible using existing equipment. The team designed a custom circuit board that could measure voltages as tiny as a millionth of a volt, to pinpoint these individual states with unprecedented accuracy. It also turned this scientific discovery into a technological feat. The team was able to recreate NASA's iconic "Pillars of Creation" image from the James Webb Space Telescope data - originally created by a <keyword id="6537818" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supercomputer" source="Orion">supercomputer</keyword> - using just a tabletop computer. They were also able to do this at a fraction of the time and energy that traditional computers would need. Using their AI accelerator, the team recreated NASA's iconic "Pillars of Creation" image from the James Webb Space Telescope data on a tabletop computer - achieving this in a fraction of the time and energy required by traditional systems, it said. The team includes several students and research fellows at IISc. They also collaborated with Stanley Williams, Professor at Texas A&amp;M University and Damien Thompson, Professor at the University of Limerick, it added. The researchers believe that this breakthrough could be one of India's biggest leaps in AI hardware, putting the country on the map of global technology innovation. Navakanta Bhat, Professor at CeNSE and an expert in silicon electronics led the circuit and system design in this project. "What stands out is how we have transformed complex physics and chemistry understanding into groundbreaking technology for AI hardware," Goswami explained. "In the context of the India Semiconductor Mission, this development could be a game-changer, revolutionising industrial, consumer and strategic applications. The national importance of such research cannot be overstated," he said. With support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the IISc team is now focused on developing a fully indigenous integrated neuromorphic chip. "This is a completely home-grown effort, from materials to circuits and systems," he emphasised. "We are well on our way to translating this technology into a system-on-a-chip," he added.

Phones drool, glasses rule. That's the mantra Meta is banking on customers adopting. It starts with updates to the company's smart Ray-Ban glasses, but those may be just a stepping stone to a future with holographic augmented-reality glasses, where people can have more lifelike video calls, watch TV, or read text messages, all while still seeing the world around them.On Wednesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg not only announced that the company was upgrading its smart glasses with new AI features, but he also unveiled a prototype of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/orion-meta-ar-smart-glasses-review-2024-9">holographic specs</a> that aren't yet for sale. These glasses, called Orion, reportedly cost Meta somewhere around $10,000 a pair to make — and they're the latest flashy attempt to break through in an industry of wearable AR and VR that has yet to catch on.These wearables have largely flopped and been mocked among the masses. Google Glass set the stage a decade ago and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-glass">spectacularly failed</a>. It was released before it was ready for prime time — an unfashionable, futuristic camera mounted over the eye that drew ridicule and inevitably weirded people out, thanks to its ability to somewhat surreptitiously record video. Now, despite a rocky start three years ago, Meta's smart glasses are doing better than expected. That's a low bar, given how deeply its first generation of the Ray-Ban glasses from 2021 disappointed — selling only about 300,000 pairs, less than 10% of which were still in use last summer. But earning a modicum of cool in what's been panned as perhaps the dorkiest market in tech is a big leap.In a July earnings call, Zuckerberg said the second generation of glasses "continue to be a bigger hit sooner than we expected — thanks in part to AI." People were buying the glasses quicker than the company could make them, he said. Glasses are "a very natural computing platform," Zuckerberg said. The Ray-Bans also have the benefit of being "just good-looking glasses," he told the crowd during Meta's Connect 2024 event, and he said "people want to have something on their face that they're proud of and that looks good."That's important to overcoming the cringe of putting a computer over your eyes. Meta's loftier goal, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/orion-meta-ar-smart-glasses-review-2024-9">Orion glasses</a>, aren't quite there. They're bulkier and way nerdier than a pair of Ray-Bans, very "Dexter's Laboratory"-coded, even if they're a more approachable option than other ski-goggle-like headsets and smart glasses. Yet getting people into the Orion glasses may depend on getting people comfortable with smart glasses generally, and that's where the Ray-Bans could come in. They're a chance for Meta to stuff its AI into hardware and keep pace in the AI arms race with Apple, Microsoft, and Google — even if customers aren't rushing to buy AI-stuffed products yet. And the Meta Ray-Bans make it even easier to use AI as you move through the world — no hands (and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/my-apple-vision-pro-nightmare-surveillance-privacy-2024-3">awkward air-pinching</a>) required.Still, wearables are a tough industry. The VR and AR headset market has slumped, declining by 54% from early 2022 to 2023, according to data from IDC. The number of VR headsets shipped fell by 4% between 2023 and 2024, according to Counterpoint Research. Despite Apple's splashy release of its Vision Pro earlier this year, the company is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-07-11/apple-s-vision-pro-won-t-cross-500-000-sales-this-year-idc-says">not expected to sell more than 500,000 devices</a> this year (in comparison, some 500,000 iPhones are sold globally every day). Its $3,500 price point is certainly a deterrent to widespread adoption, but so is the feasibility; they're clunky, there are too few programs made for them, and they're stuck among a niche user.VR headsets are "not going to be mass market, ever, in this current form," says George Jijiashvili, the senior principal analyst of games at the research firm Omdia. But if Meta's can make AI work in a way that combines video capture, sound, and location context together, the glasses could be a game changer. "If they manage to create an AI solution that actually works very well, then having glasses in that situation makes a lot of sense. You can see the road to mass adoption more clearly with glasses than with VR headsets."That's what Zuckerberg hopes, too. "These glasses exist. They are awesome," he said. "They are a glimpse of a future that I think is going to be pretty exciting." So far, it's been hard to convince the average person they need a computer strapped to their face. Meta's new Ray-Ban glasses are pulling a bait and switch

India could see a shift in foreign direct investment (FDI) trends in the second term of Donald Trump (Trump 2.0) as President of the United States, says a research report by the State Bank of India. The report highlighted that under his first term, Trump 1.0, the Trump administration made sweeping regulatory changes aimed at attracting investments back to the U.S., which impacted FDI inflows globally, including India. It added that if similar policies are reintroduced in Trump 2.0 also, it could create challenges for emerging markets like India, which rely on FDI as a significant driver of economic growth. Notably, a recent Kotak report highlighted that a complete Republican control over all arms of the US government would mean increased US earnings via corporate tax cuts, higher tariffs on imports into the US and greater US fiscal deficits. The first two could spell doom for emerging markets like India and China, since foreign investors will make a beeline for investing more money in the US markets, which will come at the cost of intense selloff in emerging markets. However, higher fiscal deficits will eventually lead to the dollar weakening after the initial euphoria dies down. "India may see shifts in foreign direct investments (FDIs) during Trump 2.0. The Trump 1.0 administration saw significant regulatory changes aimed at attracting investments back to the US," the SBI report stated. However, given that India has been gradually diversifying its sources of FDI (foreign direct investments), this trend could serve as a buffer against any potential decline. Moreover, domestic institutional investors have been stepping up big time, maintaining some balance to the massive exodus of FIIs over the past month. So far in November 2024, FIIs have withdrawn Rs 19,849 crores from the cash segment in Indian markets, while DIIs have poured in Rs 14,014.18 crores as of November 10th, 2024. "India is no longer dependent on the traditional sources of FDI inflows... unlike the recent past, FDI is now coming in many new sectors," noted the SBI report. Unlike a decade ago, when most FDI inflows came from a limited number of traditional sectors, India is now attracting investment in a wide array of industries, including renewable energy, sea transport, medical devices, and surgical appliances. Data suggests over the last 24 years, i.e., between April 2000 and June 2024, FDIs have poured in $1,013.4 billion in the Indian economy. Out of this, 67%, i.e., $689.88 billion, has come in just the last 10 years. The report added there are up to 12 emerging sectors showing strong FDI interest, which could help offset any loss of inflows in conventional sectors if there is a shift in global investment patterns under another Trump administration. In the last financial year, the top 5 sectors that have received the highest quantum of FDI inflow include the services sector (finance, banking, insurance, and business) which makes up about 16% of the inflows. This is followed computer software &amp; hardware, which constitute around 15% of total FDI flows. Trading and telecommunications follows with a share of 6% each, and Automobile Industry comes next with a 5% share. In the short term, the potential for increased U.S. tariffs, more restrictive H-1B visa policies, and a stronger dollar could bring some volatility to India's trade and investment landscape. However, in the long term, these challenges might also encourage India to expand its manufacturing capabilities, diversify export markets, and focus on becoming economically more self-reliant. Notably, India has maintained a merchandise trade surplus with the U.S. despite tariffs imposed during Trump's first term. This indicates that Indian exports have remained resilient, and there is potential to strengthen this trade relationship further by capitalizing on emerging sectors and reducing dependency on traditional industries. Suman Chowdhury, Executive Director &amp; Chief Economist, Acuité Ratings &amp; Research Limited cautions that in the medium to long term, the trade relationship with the US may see a structural improvement. "Higher tariff and trade restrictions in the US with China should translate into better opportunities for exports of manufactured goods from India", he adds.

Economic Survey 2023-2024 highlights emerging job trends in AI, Cybersecurity, 3D Printing and Web Development

Top industry groups and tech giants, including <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> and Intel, have sent a letter to the <keyword id="126668" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-department-of-commerce" source="Orion">US Department of Commerce</keyword>, protesting against <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s recent import restrictions on PCs, laptops and servers. In the letter, the biggest players in technology and manufacturing said the move "could significantly disrupt trade, hamper efforts to more closely integrate India into global supply chains, and harm businesses and consumers in both countries". Eight American trade groups asked the government to urge India to reconsider the policy, reports Bloomberg News. The industry groups included the Information Technology Industry Council, the National Association of Manufacturers and the <keyword id="1034072" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="semiconductor-industry-association" source="Orion">Semiconductor Industry Association</keyword>. They wrote in the letter that any barrier to trade could affect the shipment of US-made computers and electronics into India. According to the notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in India, for clearance of import consignments with effect from November 1, 2023, a valid licence for restricted imports is required. The government has told tech companies that the restrictions are not to ban imports but to promote exports via domestic manufacturing. Meanwhile, top consumer electronics companies like HP, Apple and Dell last week urged the government to extend the November 1 deadline for the licences required for PCs, laptops and tablets by at least an year, as it will take time to configure and set up manufacturing/assembling units as per new guidelines. Upon finding a face match, the software would track down other personal information like addresses and jobs. In a demo video, the students showed examples of finding a stranger on the subway and identifying where that person worked.It's important to note that the facial recognition wasn't executed on the glasses themselves. Meta Ray-bans can stream video to your Instagram account or to a device; the students fed that video into the software. All the rest — the facial recognition and retrieval of identifying details — was completed by a program on a laptop that worked separately from anything Meta had done.Nguyen told Business Insider that the experiment wasn't meant to show that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-ray-ban-smart-glasses-gen-z-friends-review-photos-2023-11">popular Meta Ray-Bans</a> are a problem."We do not want this to be a criticism of their product at all, and we just had them on hand —this could have been done on a phone camera," he said. He said one benefit could help you, or anyone with face blindness, remember someone's name at a dinner party.At the time, Bosworth followed up with a (now deleted) tweet saying, "Face recognition is a hugely controversial topic and for good reason and I was speaking about was how we are going to have to have a very public discussion about the pros and cons." Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses debuted a few months later in the fall of 2021.It's now been three years since Meta executives weighed the possibilities of facial recognition in smart glasses — and no such feature has yet been added. And it isn't because it's too much of a technical challenge (hey, a couple of college kids can do it!).It would appear that Meta has decided that either consumers find it too creepy or that doing it is too legally thorny. Illinois, Texas, and the European Union have laws against certain uses of facial recognition technology.Legal issues aside, consumer attitudes change. When the Meta Ray-Bans first launched, many people were freaked out by the idea of camera glasses. But over the last few years, the glasses have become a hit product. Meta has sold more than 700,000 pairs since last October, according to the market intelligence firm IDC. It's possible that at some point in the future, facial recognition in glasses will seem like a welcome convenience rather than a privacy nightmare.

After Singapore and Hong Kong, Nepal has also banned the sale and import of certain spice-mix products manufactured by Indian brands over alleged quality concerns. Four spice-mix products by <keyword id="21333385" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MDH" source="keywords">MDH</keyword> and <keyword id="19997009" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Everest" source="keywords">Everest</keyword> were banned in the Himalayan nation from Friday due to suspected ethylene oxide or EtO contamination, according to the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control here. Under this, Madras Curry Powder, Sambhar Mixed Masala Powder; Mixed Masala Curry Powder of MDH and Fish Curry Masala of Everest have been banned in Nepal. "As residue contents of ethylene oxide are found to be exceeding the prescribed limit in these four products, the import and sale of these products are banned within the country as per Article 19 of the Food Regulation 2027 B.S.," the department said in a notice issued on Friday. "Our serious attention has been drawn towards media reports about the sale of these sub-standard products in the market, and they are harmful for consumption," it said. The food quality control watchdog has also urged importers and traders to recall these products from the market. Last month, Singapore and Hong Kong halted sales of some spices produced by MDH and Everest over suspected elevated levels of ETO linked with some cancers. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has since initiated steps to examine the quality of powdered spices from various brands in the country. On Friday, the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders (FISS) said India's spice export may decline nearly 40 per cent in FY25 if the issue of <keyword id="21673555" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ethylene-oxide-contamination" source="keywords">ethylene oxide contamination</keyword> in spices meant for exports is not addressed at the earliest. Nepal bans sale of Indian spice-mix products over quality concerns

As PC and laptop makers urge the government to rethink its decision on import licensing requirements accompanied by a quota, the industry stakeholders have met <keyword id="296566" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="it-ministry" source="Orion">IT Ministry</keyword> officials to seek solutions on the matter. The meeting discussed proposed changes, like linking the import of IT hardware to the local manufacturing of a company value and its export value of electronic items, according to sources. The meeting on Friday was called to give suggestions on how the proposed import management system should work and get the stakeholders' feedback. Another meeting is likely to happen again next week to continue discussions on the issue. Last month, the <keyword id="7825659" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india-cellular-and-electronics-association" source="Orion">India Cellular and Electronics Association</keyword> (<keyword id="6816005" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="icea" source="Orion">ICEA</keyword>) wrote to the IT Ministry, requesting the government to rethink its decision on import licensing requirement accompanied by a quota, which was extended by 3 months until October 31, fearing that this may lead to price rise in consumer electronics products as companies are not yet prepared for manufacturing PCs, laptops and servers domestically at scale. The letter said that an overarching factor that should be taken into consideration in "avoiding supply chain disruption till domestic production ramps up" is that any "reduction in supplies or even an indication will lead to hoarding and market distortion". This, in turn, can push up consumer prices, "which will adversely impact not just key stakeholders such as students, but also those who are the core of growing the digital economy, i.e. start-ups, IT and ITES firms, BPOs". The industry seeks at least nine-month breather after the PLI for IT Hardware was launched. "The government may undertake a re-assessment of the investment pipeline and the supply situation before inviting the industry to discuss whether any further policy intervention is needed at that stage. It may be too early to assess the full implication of the new scheme before then," according to the letter. Where servers are concerned, the ICEA has received inputs that companies in that sector seek a relook at their inclusion in the proposed intervention. The Central government earlier deferred its decision to restrict the import of certain categories of laptops and computers until November 1, allowing companies three-months time to import these devices. Post November 1, no entity will be allowed to import laptops, computers, and related items without a license. The PLI 2.0 for IT hardware has garnered applications from 40 companies including global and domestic. The expected incremental production under the scheme is around Rs 3.35 lakh crore. "There is no bar on the budget."Planners' cost estimates of the Ambani wedding varied widely, from tens of millions of dollars to hundreds of millions of dollars.Anant's older sister <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ambani-richest-family-in-asia-india-lifestyle-home-wedding-photos-2018-12">Isha Ambani</a> got married in 2018 in a similarly lavish wedding, including a Beyoncé performance. While media outlets speculated about a $100 million price tag, a spokesperson for the Ambani-owned company, Reliance, said that it cost less than $15 million, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/naazneenkarmali/2018/12/11/the-big-fat-ambani-wedding-celebrates-a-match-among-indias-billionaire-elite/#7cb474465992">per a Forbes article</a> at the time.A spokesperson for the family did not respond to a request for comment about the costs for Anant Ambani's wedding.The pre-wedding events have grabbed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ambanis-throwing-another-pre-wedding-party-cruise-ship-2024-5">headlines</a> for months. With so many celebrities and business leaders angling for an invitation, the nuptials are also a business networking event, Aggarwal said.<h2 id="7190f45a-3ee9-4e5a-bf2a-0fef8f5de89f">Each main family member is assigned a 'shadow'</h2>Many couples don't want to host their weddings at venues where other high-profile families have already held nuptials, Aggarwal said."They want everything to be exclusive," she said. "The decor has to be something else that no one else has ever thought of. It is almost like a big movie set."For a big celebrity wedding, planners divide their staff into teams and hire hundreds of additional people leading up to and on the day of the ceremony.With chefs, waiters, light and audio teams, and decorators, about 500 people often work the event, Modgil said.The planners also assign butlers to each main family member. These staffers, called "shadows," hold their phones and gifts and ensure they stay hydrated and have everything they need."There are over 70 suppliers and vendors who we work with for each wedding," said Darshan Shroff, a Mumbai-based wedding planner. "I like to describe wedding planners in India as circus masters."<h2 id="07e84198-c3b3-4ae5-b860-565eaa82e3bd">Privacy and security are top concerns</h2>Many celebrity or influencer couples are particular about how their wedding is portrayed on the news and on social media.Planners have strict instructions that restrict posts from vendors about outfits, decor, or flowers before a set date. Most big weddings also collect the phones of their guests for privacy, and couples have teams that work with the media."You can't have too many people hanging out taking their pictures. It makes them very uncomfortable," Modgil said about celebrity guests and couples.Top security firms and even local authorities may sketch out safety plans."The minute there are some kind of celebrities, whether it's politicians or Bollywood, security becomes very important," Modgil said. "We've had separate people escorting them and even taking them back because sometimes they even get mobbed."The families and their guests are not always easy to please.Aggarwal said she has planned weddings where celebrity attendees call to confirm what type of hotel suite they will be staying in and what kind of car is coming to pick them up.
