But they want to expand their global empire to more mature economies like the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-price-of-brexit-has-been-16366-billion-so-far-plus-an-impending-recession-160and-it-hasnt-even-started-yet/articleshow/68763254.cms">UK</a> and the US as well, according to KPMG’s India CEO Outlook 2019.<br /><br />The global climate is growing increasingly turbulent and Indian CEOs aren’t oblivious, one of the primary concerns being the global ‘return to territorialism.’<br /><br /><strong>This land is ‘my’ land<br /></strong><br />As Indian CEOs are looking outwards, the ‘return of territorialism’ is a growing concern as countries are starting to look inwards. This is on top of the minds of Indian CEOs after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/why-the-staggering-costs-of-climate-change-on-india-are-much-more-than-monetary-losses/articleshow/66161296.cms">climate change</a> and disruptive technology. <br /><br />The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/trumps-escalations-of-the-trade-war-against-china-could-push-washington-towards-a-direct-confrontation-with-beijing-experts-warn/articleshow/69413005.cms">trade war</a> between the US and China has left them worried, as a majority want to take their products and services abroad. <br /><br />As many as 54% of CEOs are looking to expand into North America and Europe, which is a shift for companies that normally look at emerging economies. Unlike many companies which are in the throes of a slowdown, the IT sector has bigger fish fry. European markets which are its mainstay are growing slow, and the US is dealing with recession fears. <br /><br />Adding fuel to the fire, the US government is making it tough for them to operate, with tighter immigration laws which are taking its toll. <br /><br />Yet, IT companies are showing signs of resilience. For the first time in three years, US led growth is ahead of growth from the European Union, according to Nomura’s market analysis.<br /><br /><strong>Ramping up operations in the US<br /></strong><br />It will neither be cheaper nor easier to play a lot more in the US markets, as their ability to send employees to service the clients will not be easy. To counter the aftermath of diminishing manpower in the US, these companies have ramped up acquisition and large deals to make up for it.<br /><br />Infosys and TCS are the worst hit by the lack <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/amazon-facebook-apple-google-face-low-h1b-rejection-rate-while-deloitte-capgemini-suffer/articleshow/69734189.cms">of H1-B visa applications</a>.<br /><br />Yet, these companies are trying to gain more clients in the country and adding manpower. The acquisition and deals, in turn, are the primary reasons why momentum in US markets is greater than growth in European markets at a yearly growth rate of 12.4%.<br /><br />And they will continue to gain more deals, believes Nomura.<br /><br /><strong>The negatives bearing IT down<br /></strong><br />Increased number of large size deals is causing companies to miss margin estimates.<br /><br />Additional pressure from increasing visa costs, rising subcontractor costs and higher salary payouts has also taken a toll on margins.<br /><br />Hiring has grown at a yearly rate of 10% and attrition levels remain elevated at 17% to 22%.<br /><br />Three out of the four Indian IT giants — TCS, Infosys, HCL Technologies and Wipro — missing their growth expectations and all them missed margin expectations.<br /><br />Though IT companies chase other markets, they are not immune to Indian slowdown blues. The stagnation in growth is attributed to slowdown in banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) coupled with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/auto-sales-continue-to-decline-in-august/articleshow/70941671.cms">softness in automobile manufacturing</a>. <br /><br />BFSI’s soft growth and the future outlook is an indicator of the challenges that IT companies are facing in capital markets, large EU banks and regional banks in the US.<br /><br />Retail growth was also flat at 7% to 9%.<br /><br /><strong>The brighter side of IT<br /></strong><br />In spite of dragging factors, the IT sector has a few fast growth segments like energy which is growing at 12.7%. Telecom is also is growing at 13.9%. <br /><br />The IT sector, overall, is a part of a growing disruptive transition across the country and the world — digitisation. <br /><br />Digital growth has also been strong for IT companies like TCS, Infosys and Wipro during the first quarter for the current financial year. They have shown quarterly growth of 42.1%, 41.9% and 34.2% respectively.<br /><br />Going forward, Nomura expects Indian IT companies to price their products aggressively in a bid to win more market share.<br /><br />The IT sector is one of the core sectors of the Indian economy. TCS, Wipro, and Infosys are chasing growth but losing margins in the process

<ul><li><keyword id="285387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Haier-India">Haier India</keyword> to become a billion-dollar company by 2020 and is also certain about being one of the top three players in the home appliance segment in the next two years. </li><li>With its recent investment in Uttar Pradesh’s industrial park, Haier is aiming to offer almost 4,000 new direct employment opportunities along with over 10,000 indirect jobs.</li><li>This year, the brand set aside ₹110 crore as its marketing budget. The brand spent its marketing monnies on traditional advertising, combined with digital and strategic brand sponsorships with an end goal of increasing engagement across channels. </li></ul>The Chinese appliances and electronic goods maker, Haier has grown 35% this year and aims to become a billion dollar company by the end of 2020. It is also aiming at becoming one of the top three players in the home appliance segment and rise from its currently held fifth position in the country. <br /><br />Last year, Haier India, which follows January-December fiscal calendar, grew at 50% and recorded a net revenue of around ₹3,500 crore. Despite seeing a dip in its Y-o-Y growth this year, Eric Braganza, President, Haier India is positive about achieving his set goals in 2020. <br /><br />“Our assurance is driven largely by the higher sales and Haier’s growth trajectory in India,” says Braganza. <br /><br /><strong>Importance of Indian Market for Haier</strong><br />For Haier, India is one of the top contributing markets. Hence, the brand aims to introduce new ‘state-of-the-art products that align with its philosophy of Inspired Living into the market.’ <br /><br />Sharing the reason behind India’s strength, Branganza said, “Being at the forefront of introducing innovation through our products, we have evolved as a market disruptor in consumer durables. We have a network of 20,000 dealers across India, in which around 2,000 are direct and 18,000 are indirect dealers. We are further growing our customer base through an extensive retail network of large format stores, multi-brand outlets and a robust dealer network across the country.”<br /><br />In its attempt to further strengthen its presence in the country and to ‘meet the rising demands,’ Haier invested ₹3,069 crore in an industrial park in Uttar Pradesh. It is set to open its doors by the end of 2020. Through this expansion, Haier aims to create almost 4,000 new direct employment opportunities along with over 10,000 indirect jobs. <br /><br />Braganza said Haier is also open to further expand in India, citing the company’s growth and consumers growing demands. <br /><br />Right now, Haier gets its lion’s share from refrigerators ー 40% of its overall turnover. “We are now increasing our investments across other categories such as Air Conditioners, Washing Machines and LED TVs,” says Braganza. <br /><br /><strong>Performance in 2019</strong><br />Haier India set aside ₹110 crore as its marketing budget this year. In the first half of the year, it launched an integrated marketing campaign for its PuriCool range of air conditioners. <br /><br />The brand spent its marketing monnies on traditional advertising, combined with digital and strategic brand sponsorships such as KBC, Mega Icons, Masterchef, Mr. Punjab, and a few other regional programmes to ‘establish a closer connect with the customer.’<br /><br />With the changing marketing landscape, Braganza says, content marketing is becoming important to engage with the consumers. <br /><br />“Content is an important aspect of marketing strategies today, given the influx of multiple surfaces and mediums where customers reside. It has become essential to effectively build a connect with customers in varied forms such as video, print or in a modern setup -- a gif, meme, website interface/blogs that play a critical role in forming a brand perception in consumer’s mind,” he adds. <br /><br />Braganza takes pride in the campaign ‘Silent Performers’ for its range of Silent Washing Machines launched during the festive season. The campaign highlighted the riveting stories of India’s leading women athletes -- Hima Das (sprint runner), Dipa Karmakar (Olympian artistic gymnast) and Simranjit Kaur (Indian boxer). <br /><br />“The TVC has been picturized on the daily lives of these sportswomen who champion the notion of achieving goals despite ‘unimaginable challenges’ and ‘media glare’,” he explains. <br /><br />This year, Haier also introduced heavy discounts and cashback offers to latch onto the trend. It saw more and more consumers ‘shifting to easy finance options for purchasing products’ and decided to partner with Bajaj Finserv, HDBFS, HDFC, IDFC First, Kotak and Axis Bank. Collectively, it offered affordable EMI schemes while giving the customers a chance to make the most of the festive season.<br /><br />Going forward, the brand will continue using integrated marketing solutions to increase engagement with its consumers, introduce new products to meet their rising demands, and give them an ultimate product experience. <br />

Haier sees 35% brand growth this year; remains certain about becoming a billion-dollar company by 2020

It will also provide stipends of varying amounts, according to the ET report. The stipends will be sponsored from the ₹100 billion deposit under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme. The government plans to contribute 25% towards of that amount.<br /><br />All graduates in the final year of their study across both public and private institutions will be eligible for training under the program. The move is a joint effort of three major ministries in India — human resource development, labour and skill development. <br /><br />Overall, the program hopes to cover over one million students in the upcoming academic session (2019-20), helping improve their employability skills. The details of the apprenticeship candidates and employment status will reportedly be posted on the government’s skills portal.<br /><br />In India, technology graduates seem to have an upper hand when it comes to landing jobs compared to graduates of non-technical subjects. <p>In its efforts to stimulate growth, the government has been trying to attract foreign investors and strengthen its capital markets.</p>
<p>However, the measures included in the plan were widely regarded as falling far short of accomplishing these goals, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/28/india-tax-idUSL4N0BS4K920130228?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=rbssFinancialServicesAndRealEstateNews&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter">according to Reuters.</a> Here are some of the measures rolled out in the FY13-14 <keyword id="6358021" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="budget">budget</keyword>.</p>

<li>"Uniform registration and other norms by converging the different KYC [Know Your Client] norms".</li>
<li> Make it move closer to international practices. Investors with a stake of less that 10 percent will be treated at foreign institutional investors (FII) and those with an over 10 percent stake will be considered foreign direct investors (FDI).</li>
<li>"The FIIs will also be permitted to participate in exchange traded Currency Derivatives segments to the extent of their <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>n rupee exposure in India."</li>
<li>FIIs will also be allowed to use their investments in corporate bonds and government securities as "collateral to meet their margin requirements."</li>
<li>"Final Withholding Tax at the rate of 20 per cent on profits distributed by unlisted companies to shareholders through buy-back of share".</li>
<li>A surcharge of 5 percent on foreign companies with taxable income of over Rs. 100 million (approx $1.8 million) for one year. This is up from two percent surcharge. For domestic companies the surcharge was raised to 10 percent, from 5 percent.</li>
<li>A proposal for a <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/28/india-tax-idUSL4N0BS4K920130228?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=rbssFinancialServicesAndRealEstateNews&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter">tax residency certificate</a> that would be needed to avoid double taxation, that was part of the financial bill in the budget.</li>

<p>Certain tax amendments in the budget didn't clarify which investment returns would be taxed.</p>
<p>Moreover, the tax residency certificate amendment that is targeted at 2016 "sparked fears tax authorities would have wider discretion to go after foreign investors," <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/28/india-tax-idUSL4N0BS4K920130228?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=rbssFinancialServicesAndRealEstateNews&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter">according to Reuters.</a></p>
<p><strong>The importance of foreign investment</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-indias-gdp-growth-is-headed-to-a-10-year-low-2012-8">Growth as we've already reported is at a 10-year low</a>. And the Indian government thinks investment (both foreign and domestic) is "the key to restart the growth engine".</p>
<p>Remember, this time last year Jefferies' analysts <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jefferies-india-investment-cycle-2012-3">Nilesh Jasani and Piyush Nahar</a> had said that India's economic slowdown was being driven by a collapse in the investment cycle that is "far from being played out."</p>
<p>Moreover, India's current account deficit, which represents the country's balance of payments, widened to a record $28 billion the quarter ending December 12. India needs to attract foreign investments to lower this as well. This is because a wide current account deficit makes the Indian economy vulnerable to a rout in global financial markets and could hit the Indian rupee.</p>

<p><strong>Other measures</strong></p>
<p>The budget, which needs to be approved by parliament, also raised taxes on the extremely wealthy as part of its plan to lower the federal deficit. It proposed a surcharge of 10 percent on those whose taxable income exceeds Rs 10 million (approve $180K) to help lower the federal deficit. But if implemented this is also in place for one year.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/1e2a2a1c-8175-11e2-ae78-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2MCljDrTq">Jahangir Aziz, chief India economist for JP Morgan told the Financial Times</a> that the budget lacked a focused plan to revive growth:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"It’s like a shotgun that fires pellets across the board. There is no target you are actually choosing. There is no concerted vision where he wants growth to come from, or where he wants to take this economy, not today, not tomorrow, but the day after tomorrow."</p>

<p>The Hindu nationalist leader, elected in a landslide earlier this year, is planning to increase the country's manufacturing share of GDP from 15% to 25%.</p>
<p>It's an enormous task. </p>
<p>This week Modi has already celebrated <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/things-that-cost-more-than-indias-mars-mission-2014-9">India's successful and astonishingly cheap mission to Mars</a>, b<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">ut the coming task will be harder.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Modi's basic goal is a Chinese-style expansion, led by the manufacturing sector. There are a lot of factors in India's favour, and some major challenges. </span></p>

<p><strong>A lot of stalled projects means a lot of room to improve. </strong>Modi is extremely preoccupied with reforming India's energy sector, and with good reason. That's a weakness, but Societe Generale research from Patrick Legland and Suman Guliani suggests an improvement "create a cascade effect leading to high growth and boosting investor confidence."</p>

<p><strong>Indonesia isn't going to grow as quickly. </strong>That's according to a note from Morgan Stanley's Singapore office: "<span class="il">India</span><span> is likely to show cyclical recovery in economic growth and margins before it begins to accelerate its pace of reform momentum, whereas </span><span class="il">Indonesia</span><span> will have to increase the pace of reform momentum to lift its growth potential from the current levels." The economists add that Indonesia is most exposed to rising US rates. If competitor nations are held back, that's probably to India's benefit.</span></p>
