The country exported coffee worth USD 1.14 billion in 2022-23. India is Asia's third-largest producer and exporter of coffee. The country grows Arabica and <keyword id="20325925" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="robusta" source="keywords">Robusta</keyword> varieties. <keyword id="20319141" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arabica-coffee" source="keywords">Arabica coffee</keyword> beans have less <keyword id="21791331" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="caffeine-content" source="keywords">caffeine content</keyword> than the Robusta. Arabica has sweet and smoother taste, while Robusta is generally more bitter and harsher on the taste buds. New Delhi, Coffee shipments from India rose 13.35 per cent to 1,25,631 tonnes during January-March period of this year on higher demand for <keyword id="20319140" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Robusta-coffee" source="keywords">Robusta coffee</keyword>, according to the official data. The country had exported 1,10,830 tonnes of coffee in the same period in 2023. India, Asia's third-largest producer and exporter, grows Arabica and Robusta varieties of coffee. <keyword id="20319141" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arabica-coffee" source="keywords">Arabica coffee</keyword> bean has lesser caffeine content than the Robusta. Arabica has a sweet and smoother taste, while the Robusta is generally more bitter and harsher on the taste buds. According to the <keyword id="20293421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coffee-Board-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Coffee Board of India" meta.hostid="263" meta.entityid="Coffee Board of India">Coffee Board of India</keyword>'s latest data, export of Robusta coffee bean rose by 18 per cent to 69,637 tonnes in the first quarter of the 2024 calendar year from 59,050 tonnes in the year-ago period. However, the shipment of Arabica coffee bean declined to 13,419 tonnes from 15,468 tonnes in the said period. Instant <keyword id="20319139" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coffee-exports" source="keywords">coffee exports</keyword> rose 16,218 tonnes during January-March of this year as against 15,238 tonnes in the year-ago period, while re-export of coffee also increased to 26,239 tonnes from 20,952 tonnes in the said period. In terms of value, <keyword id="21237296" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="total-coffee-exports" source="keywords">total coffee exports</keyword> were at Rs 3,644 crore during January-March of 2024, higher than Rs 2,604.44 crore achieved in the year-ago period. The unit value realisation was Rs 2,90,057 per tonne. Italy, Russia, the UAE, Germany and Turkey are the major coffee <keyword id="21237297" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="export-destinations" source="keywords">export destinations</keyword> for India. In its post-blossom estimate, the board has projected the country's total <keyword id="21237298" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coffee-production" source="keywords">coffee production</keyword> at 3,74,200 tonnes for the 2023-24 marketing year (October-September), higher than the actual output of 3,52,000 tonnes in the previous year. In the full 2023 calendar year, India's coffee exports had declined by 5.4 per cent to 3.77 lakh tonnes.

New Delhi, Jan 7 () Coffee exports from India rose marginally to 3.50 lakh tonne in 2019 as compared to 3.48 lakh tonne in the previous year, according to the Coffee Board.
 India is the third-largest producer and exporter of coffee in Asia.
 Italy, Germany and Russia were the major export destinations for Indian coffee last year. India ships both Robusta and Arabica varieties, besides instant coffee.
 Robusta coffee exports rose 4.10 per cent to 1,86,360 tonne in 2019 from 1,79,004 tonne in 2018, the Board data showed.
 Export of Arabica coffee however declined 10.75 per cent to 47,341.82 tonne from 53,049 tonne in 2018.
 The outbound shipment of instant coffee fell to 27,339 tonne in 2019 from 29,146 tonne in the previous year, the data showed.
 Of the total coffee exports, India exported 72,267 tonne to Italy, 37,175 tonne to Germany and 28,573 tonne to Russia last year.
 Some of the major exporting companies include CCL Products India, Tata Coffee, NKG India Coffee, Allanasons Pvt Ltd, Olam Agro and Coffee Day Global Ltd.
 Coffee production is estimated to be slightly higher at 3,19,500 tonne for the 2018-19 crop year (October-September), as per the post monsoon forecast by the Board. LUX ANU

In a Rs. 3,000 crore deal, Siddhartha had sold his stake in Mindtree. </li><li>Per year, the total volume of coffee exported by Siddhartha is about 28,000 tons. Another 2,000 tons of coffee is sold locally with the coffee growing and trading company reporting an annual turnover of Rs. 60 million. </li><li>Siddhartha was 58 years of age when he died and he held a post-graduate degree in Economics. Their family owns about 15,000 acres of coffee estate and is the Largent coffee planters. </li><li>A month before Siddhartha’s death, Coca-cola had started talks to purchase a major stake in Café Coffee Day, the largest café chain in India. This was considered to be a well-calculated strategy that would hedge the risks connected with the selling of Coca-cola beverages in India and help the company to gain a strong foothold in the sub-continent if the deal had been realized.</li><li>Way back in 1985, Siddhartha had owned about 10,000 acres of coffee farms. As per his statement, he doubled his investment in the coffee plantations within a year when the coffee trading was liberalized in the 90s. </li><li>Siddhartha started the Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company Ltd (ABCTCL) in 1993 to export coffee and the company became the second largest exporter of coffee from India. </li><li>The first store of CCD was opened in Brigade Road of Bengaluru that charged Rs. 100 for a coffee and an hour of Internet surfing. New Delhi, Nov 29 () The government has initiated dialogue with ASEAN members for review of the free-trade agreement (FTA) executed 10 years ago, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal informed the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
 Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, the minister said the FTA with ASEAN was executed around 10 years ago and "our study shows that we have not been able to get as much benefit out of the FTA".
 "We have opened up our market to many other countries to the detriment of India's and Indian coffee growers interests.
 "We have already initiated dialogue with ASEAN countries and I am happy to share with the House that ASEAN has agreed for a review of the FTA. We will take up various issues in the review and then we will report to the House," he told the House.
 He also said the Coffee Board is trying to develop an Indian brand of coffee for export and the work in this regard is underway.
 In his written reply, the minister also said the Government of India through the Coffee Board is undertaking various measures to boost the export of coffee across the world. SKC DV HRS

A string of organic coffee outlets are going to dot India soon as a farmers' cooperative based in Kottayam that cultivate organic crop has plans to open coffee shops across the country. 
 Manarcadu Social Service Society (Mass) is expected to come up with their <keyword id="3302878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cafe-de-Monde">Cafe de Monde</keyword> in a few months from Kerala and the first one will come up in Kochi. 
 After coffee, the cooperative is likely to start selling <keyword id="414343" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Organic-fruits">organic fruits</keyword> and vegetables cultivated by it through these shops only. 
 
Reportedly, Mass, which was incorporated in 2001, has over 5000 farmers under its wings who cultivate in 3100 hectares spread over 18 villages. It exports coffee, cocoa and spices to Europe through the company Plantrich Agritech Pvt. Ltd. 
 
The society annually produces 4000 tonnes of spices, 6500 tonnes of cocoa, 2600 tonnes of coffee and 1870 tonnes of fruits. It also grows organic coffee in Tamil Nadu.

New Delhi, Jan 5 () Further escalation in the tension between the US and Iran will have implications on India's exports to the Persian Gulf nation, apex exporters body FIEO said on Sunday.
 Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) Director General Ajay Sahai said so far exporters have not flagged any concerns related with exports to Iran.
 "However, if the tensions will continue, it may have affect on India's exports to Iran," he said.
 He added that due to existing trade sanctions on Iran, Iranian shipping lines are only taking Indian consignments to that country.
 Tensions between Iran and the US increased after an American drone strike killed top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani last week.
 Iran is a key trading partner of India. Its major exports to India are oil, fertilisers and chemicals, while it imports cereals, tea, coffee, basmati rice, spices and organic chemicals, among others.
 India's exports to the Persian Gulf nation in 2018-19 were worth USD 3.51 billion (about Rs 24,920 crore), while imports were valued at USD 13.52 billion (about Rs 96,000 crore).
 The trade imbalance is mainly because of India's import of oil from Iran.
 Both the countries are holding negotiations for a bilateral preferential trade agreement (PTA) to increase trade.
 Unlike a free trade pact, where two trading partners significantly reduce or eliminate duties on maximum number of goods traded between them, PTA involves removal of duties on certain identified products.
 FIEO had earlier said that Iran holds huge export opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, chemicals, machinery, pharmaceuticals, paper and paper products, man-made fibre and filament yarn and essential oils. RR ABM

Before Rhea Sanghi joined <keyword id="4164636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="BLUE-TOKAI">Blue Tokai</keyword> <keyword id="6354798" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="coffee">Coffee</keyword> Roasters as its Community Manager in October 2015, she had never been much of a coffee drinker. Now, coffee is such a deeply-ingrained part of her life that it’s hard for her to imagine how she lived without it, she confesses. In a similar vein, Blue Tokai aims to give India’s coffee drinkers, traditionally used to instant coffee or the likes of Barista and Cafe Coffee Day, a transformative experience with its specialty blends. The idea for Blue Tokai took root in the minds of the co-founders, Matt Chittaranjan and Namrata Asthana, when they moved from Chennai to Delhi in 2012 and found themselves out of options for fresh and accessible specialty coffee. It all started with some farm visits Matt and Namrata visited a number of coffee estates in southern India, mainly in Karnataka, with the end goal of sourcing beans for the domestic retail market. Rhea says that the farmers scoffed at the couple upon hearing this. They said that there wasn’t a market for specialty coffee in India. Before Blue Tokai and other specialty coffee brands came along, these coffee farmers mainly exported their produce. India ranks among the largest producers of coffee in the world, but exports around 70% of its beans to the other countries, most notably Italy and Australia. The high quality blends were exported, while the cheaper, less flavourful beans were meant for instant coffee. Matt and Namrata invested in a roaster and began sourcing the beans directly from the farmers. After roasting the beans, they would sell the roasted beans to customers through online channels. Slowly but surely, the company helped drive a paradigm shift in India’s coffee <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> by introducing people to its single-estate Arabica coffees. “This is how Blue Tokai demonstrated innovation,” Rhea laughs, “by giving people good coffee that didn’t burn their tongues and tasted naturally sweet instead of bitter.” Changing tastes The company wasn’t alone. Blue Tokai started operations as Starbucks was ramping up its presence in India through a joint venture with Tata- an indicator that Indian consumers were ready for change. “In the last few years, specialty coffee has become the go-to choice for a specific kind of Indian,” Rhea says, “the upwardly mobile metro-dwellers who are used to a certain lifestyle. They’re looking to curate their world with good brands and are willing to travel lengths to get their daily dose of caffeine, even though they don’t necessarily have to.” In around five years, Starbucks’ has already reached a 100 outlets in India, buoyed by an aspirational urban middle class that is looking to sip local brews while working at cafes. Apart of raising consumer awareness, Starbucks’ growth has demonstrated that the coffee market is taking off in India, and that there is room for other brands. In addition to Blue Tokai, a number of homegrown coffee brands have sprung up in the last few years - Bangalore’s Flying Squirrel and Third Wave Coffee, Goa’s Sussegado and Mumbai’s The Indian Bean - all of which have looked to plug the market gap with their domestically sourced, specialty blends. Even though they’re all vying for shelf space in retail stores, selling wholesale to restaurants and experimenting with the cafe model, their national reach is made possible through e-commerce. The end result? Indian consumers are spoilt for choice. Blue Tokai’s retail customer base mostly comprises people between the ages of 27 and 35 who are more aware of their choices and what they’re consuming. When asked what sets Blue Tokai’s customers apart from those of big chains, Rhea quips, “Our customers are people who know the difference between good coffee and great coffee.” Rhea joined Blue Tokai just as it was launching its first cafe, which was attached to its roastery in Delhi’s Saiyad Ul Ajaib area. In her first few months, she was privy to the roastery’s escalation to a full-service cafe. “With each day came more customer feedback to act on, more staff to train and more additions to the menu.” She was also charged with leading the company’s social media strategy and building a community through events like brewing classes. “Why the cafe?” I ask Rhea. The idea was to have an espresso bar where prospective customers could taste their coffee before purchasing a particular blend of roasted beans. Blue Tokai was primarily in the business of online sales before launching the cafe. However, Matt and Namrata soon realised that no one in the market was offering good, freshly-brewed coffee for direct purchase. “We started selling cortados, flat whites and pour overs,” Rhea says, “and once that took off, people said that they wanted food options, WiFi and power outlets.” Caffeine-induced growth The company’s growth is impressive.There were around 15 to 20 employees at the company when she joined. There are now 140. I’m talking to Rhea in Blue Tokai’s fifth cafe, at Gurgaon’s Bristol Chowk. They currently have seven outlets, spread across Bombay and Delhi, with an eighth one slated to open in Panjim, Goa by the third week of April. “We never intend to go the franchising route,” Rhea explains, “all our cafes will be owned and operated by us so we can maintain our quality”. Rhea is currently Blue Tokai’s head of marketing and partnerships. Her role covers all three facets of Blue Tokai’s business: the online retail segment, the wholesale segment, which involves supply arrangements with 400 partners such as restaurants, hotels and corporates, and finally, the cafes. She has more than a few things on her plate at the moment. She’s building a team to handle cafe operations and customer service on a zonal basis. She’s working to streamline Blue Tokai’s social media presence. She’s growing the B2B sales program. She’s tying up with partners for a range of events such as India Art Fair, Magnetic Fields and Design ID. She’s onboarding more food partners to strengthen the menu at Blue Tokai’s cafes. She’s also working with smaller food and beverage brands on cross-promotion opportunities and pop-ups. It seems that this emphasis on community has paid off. “We have amazingly loyal customers,” Rhea says. “We try to be as approachable as possible, which helps us get a lot of constructive feedback from customers.” “What else sets Blue Tokai apart?” I ask her. It’s the kind of ingratiating question so common in interviews with company insiders, one that invariably unlocks a number of empty buzzwords and feel-good catchphrases. But Rhea doesn’t disappoint: “We are farm-to-cup in the truest sense.” The company’s purpose, from the very beginning, was to cut out the middleman and give its coffee farmers the credit they deserve. Most coffee chains or distributors buy their coffee through a series of intermediaries and sell their products weeks after the beans have been roasted. Blue Tokai sources the beans from 11 estates, as detailed on its website, roasts them at least a few times a week and sells them directly in cafes or ships them within one or two days. Rhea also alludes to the company’s emphasis on transparency. “Everything we do is very consciously done. All our products go out with a roast date and the details of the estate that it was sourced from. Our roasteries in Bombay and Delhi are open to the public so they get a first-hand insight into the roasting process.” We’re nearing the end of our interview. I ask Rhea about Blue Tokai’s plans for the short-to-medium term. “We want to make our coffee more accessible,” she says, “ the idea is to open more cafes and be in as many places as possible.” In addition to Panjim, the company is considering expanding into other Tier-2 cities. “People in places like Jaipur and Surat drink A LOT of coffee,” Rhea explains. Blue Tokai is also planning to expand its product slate. “We’re looking to sell brewed coffee through retail channels - bottled, cold brew and nitro, mainly. The market for preserved, ready-to-drink coffee has a lot of potential.” Rhea needs to get back to work, her phone has been ringing incessantly over the past hour. I conclude with one last question. “Has your experience at Blue Tokai made you confident about starting your own company one day?” “Yes” she replies almost immediately. She laughs as she gets up. “It’s hard to imagine how it wouldn’t be coffee-related, though.”

Despite unfavourable economic conditions in major markets such as the European Union (EU), the US, and West Asian nations, Indian <keyword id="21353395" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="textile-exports" source="keywords">textile exports</keyword> grew by 9.59 per cent compared to the previous year in May 2024, the Confederation of <keyword id="22064995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-textile" source="keywords">Indian Textile</keyword> Industry (CITI) said in a report. Simultaneously, <keyword id="22064997" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-apparel-exports" source="keywords">Indian apparel exports</keyword> saw a growth of 9.84 per cent during the same period. The CITI in its report highlighted that the cumulative exports of textiles and apparel during May 2024 registered a growth of 9.70 per cent over May last year. The country's overall exports for May 2024 surged to USD 68.29 billion. This was a substantial year-on-year increase of 10.2 per cent, according to data released by the Commerce Ministry on June 14. The analysis noted that during Apr -May' 24, Indian textile exports registered a growth of 6.04 per cent over the previous year, while apparel exports registered a growth of 4.46 per cent during the same time period. The cumulative exports of textiles and apparel during April-May 2024 saw a surge of 5.34 per cent as compared to the same period last year. The recently released export data revealed that sectors such as electronic goods, drugs and pharmaceuticals, organic and inorganic chemicals, engineering goods, petroleum products, plastics &amp; linoleum, cotton yarn/fabs made-ups ( textiles manufactured), handloom products, etc., man-made yarn/fabs./made-ups, handloom products etc. performed well in the exports from the country. Other merchandise products, such as meat, dairy and poultry products, mica, coal and other ores, minerals including processed minerals, RMG of all textiles, tea, coffee, rice, tobacco, carpet and handicrafts, oil seeds; and fruits and vegetables, did well too. On Friday, AshwKumar, President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), highlighted that a positive trajectory was seen in May 2024, driven by robust order bookings. Among the top ten export markets for India were the US, UAE, Netherlands, UK, China, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Germany and France. Considerably, in these markets, the exports registered a double-digit growth rate. Breaking down export data released yesterday, the merchandise exports witnessed a 9.1 per cent rise to USD 38.13 billion, while service exports climbed by 11.7 per cent, reaching USD 30.16 billion. Indian textile exports surge by 9.59% in May despite global economic challenges

These include mandi (wholesale) taxes, minimum export prices, duties and quota restrictions. </li><li>Not only will this help <keyword id="45092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="farmers">farmers</keyword> tap into foreign markets better, but will stabilise export flows and improve relations with <keyword id="44844" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trade">trade</keyword> partners. </li><li>The policy will also involve a number of initiatives such as the standardisation of agricultural produce, the development of supply chains and shipping infrastructure, the amendment of conflicting regulations and investment in R&amp;D. </li></ul>Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always stressed that one of his administration’s key priorities is to boost farmer incomes, the progress on which has been hindered by persistently low retail food prices. With this in mind, on 6 December, his Union Cabinet <a href="http://www.pib.nic.in/PressReleseDetail.aspx?PRID=1554960">approved a new policy</a> to double agricultural exports to $60 billion by 2022, the same year by which it intends to double farmer incomes, and make India one of the world’s 10 largest agricultural exporters. Under the policy, all restrictions on the export of organic and processed food items will be lifted. These include mandi taxes, which are fees levied on the sale of produce that vary from state to state, minimum export prices, duties and quota restrictions. Not only will this help farmers tap into foreign markets better, but will stabilise trade flows and improve relations with partners as export bans and duties often tend to be a sticking point during trade negotiations. In the past, the Indian government has instituted export bans on certain food items in response to soaring domestic demand. The policy will also involve a number of initiatives such as the standardisation of agricultural produce, the development of supply chains and shipping infrastructure, the amendment of conflicting regulations and investment in logistics and technology to make smallholder-farmers trade-ready. India’s agricultural exports, which roughly comprise a tenth of the country’s overall merchandise exports, are currently dominated by three items: basmati <keyword id="13726" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rice">rice</keyword>, meat and marine products. In an attempt to diversify India’s exports, the central government will invest ₹14 billion to merge a variety of export incentive schemes and set up specialised export-focused clusters in a number of agricultural strongholds in India. Storm in the tea cup is something you have heard. But will you laugh if you hear that a storm is brewing in the coffee cup? Not if you belong to the southern part of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place> where coffee is more than a mere beverage. Drinking coffee in the South is a ritual of sorts that sets the tone for the day. Therefore, when the first cup of coffee arrives, it better be caramel-hued, piping hot, steamy, frothy and appropriately sweet. Because when the first cuppa is downed and the taste reaches its crescendo, the day pans out well, in fact, very well.

	 

	A few years ago, coffee was a drink that was predominantly South Indian and came in steel cups, both at home and outside. And each cup cost around Rs 5. But this was before the 1,500-outlets-strong Café Coffee Day started its operations in 1996. Prices at the CCD were then considered insane and experts had even written off the chain as an experiment that hadn’t got its facts right. After all, who would want to pay Rs 50 for a coffee variety, no matter how exotic it is, when normal coffee is available for a fraction of that amount?<o:p></o:p>

	 

	But very soon, the patrons, especially the young people who had arrived fresh as the benefactors of the IT industry, embraced the fashionable coffee shops (they had delightful ambience) as their new socialising hubs that spoke of their status symbol. After all, coffee is all about class, isn’t it?<o:p></o:p>

	 

	The coffee clubs in every city worth their salt will vouch for it. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Bangalore</st1:city></st1:place> had some; Kolkata had its charming old coffee houses, some of which date back to the Colonial Era, and many cities came up with their own versions of coffee culture that integrated with their respective cultures. In other words, coffee did form a lifeline for many. What’s more, coffee was the essential part of Indian literature as well, especially in the early 1970s, since coffee clubs hosted numerous poetry sessions, literary discussions and socio-political debates over endless cuppas, shaping the Indian sensibility!<o:p></o:p>

	 

	Indian coffee, which has a comparatively recent origin and is mostly grown in the South, entered the country in the 15th century as a Sufi saint brought the beans back when he returned from <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on"><keyword id="6364756" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mecca">Mecca</keyword></st1:city></st1:place>. The seeds sown at that time have been bearing fruits ever since.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	The production of coffee beans in the country and the ever expanding café markets are interrelated in some ways, but the growth of the Indian coffee industry and the fast-paced development of the consumer market for coffee are not totally interdependent.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	While <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region>’s Arabica and Robusta are known for their distinct aroma and stimulant properties, we must remember that <st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region> exports nearly 80% of its total coffee produce to <st1:country-region w:st="on">Russia</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Germany</st1:country-region>, the <st1:country-region w:st="on">US</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Spain</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Belgium</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Slovenia</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Greece</st1:country-region>, the <st1:country-region w:st="on">Netherlands</st1:country-region> and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">France</st1:country-region></st1:place>, among others. The country grows nearly 800,000 tonnes of coffee across the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Orissa</st1:place>, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><keyword id="6354915" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Assam">Assam</keyword></st1:country-region></st1:city>, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, <keyword id="46408" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Arunachal-Pradesh">Arunachal Pradesh</keyword> and so on. With the majority of the coffee growers being unorganised farmers, coffee as a cash crop does not have the negotiating power to dictate its procurement prices.<o:p></o:p>

	 
 Although there is a <keyword id="2239954" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Coffee-Board-in-India">Coffee Board in India</keyword> that essentially deals with the welfare of the coffee growers, underdeveloped socio-economic conditions, perpetual labour shortage and absence of government assistance in 98% cases make it more of a traditional crop that has been grown through generations, rather than a cash crop with great profit potential.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	On the other hand, what’s been thriving is the processed coffee business, which is more like a hospitality industry, with customer service and profit-making being its chief objectives. Café Coffee Day has already posted an impressive growth chart of 1,500 outlets in less than two decades and other cafés, which are opening to brisk business, are present across almost all highways, metros and tier II cities. It seems that the market for coffee as a consumer product has been resurrected in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p>

	 
 Consequently, when the world’s largest coffee chain <keyword id="6377922" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Starbucks">Starbucks</keyword> entered the Indian market through a joint venture with the industry biggie <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tata-Group">TATA Group</keyword> (Tata Starbucks Ltd), the market was warm and more than welcoming. The well-travelled Indian took to Starbucks as the fish takes to water. The brand, which entered the Indian market in October 2012, has been on a roll ever since, opening outlets in all major cities. The company is currently catering to a market worth $300 million and hopes to achieve an impressive 20% annual growth.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	Curiously, the Indian coffee market, in spite of having enough growth potential, has not looked beyond CCD. Other brands such as Barista, ow­ned by Lavazza Spa, had a tough time staying afloat in this volatile market.<o:p></o:p>

	 

	In a largely tea-obsessed nation, coffee feels like an aberration. But brands such as CCD and Starbucks are positioning themselves as lifestyle choices and aspirational names in order to serve more than just coffee. But here is a hitch. In spite of pushing a lot of money into branding, will Indian consumers cold-shoulder these companies after experiencing the initial euphoria of having an international coffee brand in the neighbourhood? In such a case, only constant innovation can save the cup of coffee!<o:p></o:p>

Overall imports in the month fell marginally to $41 billion from $41.9 billion in December 2017 and $43.1 billion in November 2018. The reduction in the country’s import bill is good for a developing <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> like India, which is dependent on imports for some necessary items like oil. The recent/steady weakening of the rupee had made these imports even costlier.  However, as the cost of essential imports like oil rose, Indians’ demand for discretionary items like gold, jewellery, and <keyword id="6380512" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="electronics">electronics</keyword> fell. India’s gold imports have been declining for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-value-of-indias-gold-imports-are-declining-but-thats-a-good-thing/articleshow/65009130.cms">a while now</a>. They fell by 24% year-on-year to $2.6 billion in December 2018, capping an overall decline of 7% to $24.8 billion in the April-December period. While this can be attributed to a number of factors, the most prominent one is high domestic prices (following the depreciation of the rupee) which has caused rural demand to plummet. As people in rural areas like smallholder farmers lack access to formal banking channels, they usually invest in gold. Positive impact on trade deficit This is good for the Indian economy, which has been currently struggling to boost its exports in the absence of global demand. Rising imports and falling exports erode the country’s foreign exchange reserves and weaken the local currency further. Last month, India’s exports rose marginally to $27.9 billion on a year-on-year as a decline in exports of agricultural commodities like coffee and oilseeds as well as jewelry and engineering inputs were countered by a rise in outbound shipments of petroleum products and chemicals. Despite the negligible growth in exports, India’s trade deficit declined to its lowest point since February 2018, thanks to falling demand for gold and electronics, both of which India imports in very high quantities, India’s trade deficit declined. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/oil-prices-are-falling-and-thats-great-news-for-the-indian-rupee/articleshow/66768210.cms">The appreciation of the rupee</a> also helped India’s trade balance. The trade deficit, which measures the difference between imports and exports, had surged in the middle of 2018 owing to higher prices of oil, which in turn, battered the rupee. India imports 80% of its domestic oil requirements. The shrinking deficit will make the country’s finances less vulnerable to global shocks as it heads into election season. The downward trend the trade deficit is expected to continue amid election uncertainty, global trade tensions and declining export growth from one of India’s largest trade partners, China. India’s current account deficit was originally expected to increase <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-is-hiking-import-duties-on-an-additional-15-items-to-keep-its-current-account-deficit-in-check/articleshow/66175600.cms">to 2.8% of GDP </a>by the end of 2019 from 1.9% at the end of March 2018. However, final estimates will likely be lower than this.
