State-owned <keyword id="20039085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India-Ltd" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Coal India Ltd" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Coal India Ltd">Coal India Ltd</keyword>'s contribution to the <keyword id="21546749" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-exchequer" source="keywords">government exchequer</keyword> increased by 6.4 per cent to Rs 60,140.31 crore in <keyword id="19910780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FY24" source="keywords">FY24</keyword>, over the financial year 2022-23. <keyword id="19903245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India" source="keywords">Coal India</keyword> Ltd (CIL), which accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal output, paid Rs 56,524.11 crore to the government exchequer in FY23, according to provisional figures of the coal ministry. Total levies paid to the government in March 2024 also went up by 14.8 per cent to Rs 6,069.18 crore from Rs 5,282.59 crore paid in the corresponding month of FY23. Of the total Rs 60,140.42 crore paid to the government exchequer in FY24, maximum amount of Rs 13,268.55 crore was made to the state government of Jharkhand, followed by Rs 12,836.20 crore to the Odisha government, Rs 11,890.79 crore to Chhattisgarh, Rs 10,865.96 crore to Madhya Pradesh, and Rs 6,188.89 crore to Maharashtra among others. The coal-producing states earned the <keyword id="19945274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue" source="keywords">revenue</keyword> from royalty, District Mineral Foundation (DMF) and National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) among others. The government had earlier said that the coal-producing states earned a revenue of Rs 1.52 lakh crore in the last nine years from royalty, DMF and NMET. Coal mining sector has proved to be a big booster for the economic growth of the states that produce fossil fuel. State governments are entitled to receive 14 per cent of royalty on the sale price of coal and 30 per cent of the royalty as contribution towards the proposed district mineral foundations (DMFs)-- which is meant to support project-affected people---and two per cent of NMET from dry-fuel produced by the coal companies and also the private sector. In case of captive, commercial mines states are also entitled to receive the revenue share offered by the auction holder in a transparent bidding process. Apart from this, state governments also benefit from increased employment, land compensation, increased investment in allied infrastructure like railways, road and several other economic benefits. Coal India's production and off-take are pegged at 838 MT for FY'25. Coal India's contribution to govt exchequer rises 6.4% to ₹60,140 crore in FY24

New Delhi, India's total <keyword id="6383145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-production" source="Orion">coal production</keyword> rose 8.40 per cent to 222.93 million tonne (MT) in April-June 2023-24, an official statement said on Monday. The country's overall coal output was 205.65 MT in the year-ago quarter, the Ministry of Coal said. Captive mines /others registered a growth of 4.74 per cent to 30.48 MT in Q1 FY24, from 29.10 MT in Q1 FY23. The cumulative coal dispatch grew 6.97 per cent to 239.69 MT in Q1 this fiscal compared to 224.08 MT in Q1 of FY23. The total coal stock, as of June 30, 2023, surged 37.62 per cent to 107.15 MT (provisional) from 77.86 MT a year ago. "This growth indicates the continued efforts to meet the rising demand for coal," the ministry said. State-owned <keyword id="45383" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="coal-India" source="Orion">Coal India</keyword> Limited (CIL) has recorded 9.85 per cent growth, with production reaching 175.35 MT in Q1 FY24 compared to 159.63 MT a year ago. India will not face any coal shortage this year, even during the monsoon, Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi said last month.

India's coal output grows 8.40% to 222.93 MT in April-June 2023

India's eight core industries recorded a growth of 7.4 per cent in December (2022) against 4.1 per cent recorded in the same month last year, according to official data released by the <keyword id="527366" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Commerce-Industry" source="Orion">Ministry of Commerce &amp; Industry</keyword> on Tuesday. The number stood at 5.4 per cent in November, 2022. "The production of coal, electricity, steel, cement, fertilizers, refinery products and natural gas increased in December 2022 over the corresponding month of last year," stated the release. The <keyword id="16313496" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="production-of-crude-oil-declined" source="Orion">production of crude oil declined</keyword> by 1.2 per cent in December, 2022. The cumulative growth rate of ICI during April-December 2022 was 8.0 per cent (provisional) as compared to the corresponding period of last year. The Index of Core Industries measures combined and individual performance of production in selected eight core industries viz. coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilizers, steel, cement and electricity. India's core sector output rises by 7.4 per cent in December

A day before the official release of India's Gross Domestic Product (<keyword id="35050" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDP" source="Orion">GDP</keyword>) figures for <keyword id="21593310" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q1-FY25" source="keywords">Q1 FY25</keyword>, a report by <keyword id="20548750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anand-Rathi" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Anand Rathi" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Anand Rathi">Anand Rathi</keyword> research estimates the GDP to grow by 7 per cent, primarily driven by the robust performance of the services sector. The financial advisory firm also maintains its full-year <keyword id="19972825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDP-growth" source="keywords">GDP growth</keyword> projection at 7 per cent, though it warns of potential downside risks. Utilities GVA is expected to rise by 11.5 per cent, while the construction sector has slowed due to election-related disruptions and the impact of heat. The mining sector remains strong, supported by increased coal production. The services sector is expected to be the primary driver of GDP growth in Q1 FY25. Despite reduced <keyword id="20155204" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-spending" source="keywords">government spending</keyword> ahead of the elections, which is likely to dampen growth in some service sectors, financial, real estate, and professional services are expected to have performed well. This performance is attributed to strong market activity and credit growth. Overall, Services Gross Value Added (GVA) is expected to grow by 8.2 per cent in Q1 FY25. As per the report, Investment was a key growth driver in FY24, fuelled by government infrastructure projects and a real estate upswing. However, the momentum appears to have slowed in Q1 FY25 due to pre-election restrictions. Despite this, the report predicts a significant rise in government capital expenditure in the coming months, supported by greater budget allocations. The report highlights the changing dynamics of private consumption in India. FY24 saw weak consumption, especially in rural areas, with final consumption expenditure growing by just 3.8 per cent. However, as FY25 begins, there are signs of a rural revival. Indicators such as increased two-wheeler sales and improving Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) volume growth signal a rebound in rural demand. In contrast, urban demand continues to show signs of sluggishness. The muted sales of passenger vehicles, weaker retail credit transfers, and flat Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections underscore this trend. While consumption is not expected to see a significant rise in Q1 FY25, the outlook for the remainder of the year appears positive. This optimism is bolstered by anticipated higher agricultural output and sharper government focus on rural areas. The agriculture sector is expected to post a subdued growth of 2.1 per cent in Q1 FY25, affected by scorching heat and uneven rainfall last year, which led to lower reservoir levels and hindered farming activities. However, the outlook is more promising for the remainder of the fiscal year, with better rains and improved sowing conditions expected to boost agricultural output Additionally, a rebound in stamp duty collections suggests buoyant real estate sales. Private capital expenditure, which was previously subdued, is expected to expand in FY25, driven by rising capacity utilisation and strong order books. The industrial sector, which grew by 9.5 per cent in FY24, is expected to see a shift in growth drivers in Q1 FY25. The focus is now moving towards utilities and mining, with manufacturing growth slowing. While government infrastructure projects and private capital expenditure will continue to support industrial growth, the global growth slowdown poses potential risks.

Anand Rathi anticipates Q1 FY25 GDP growth at 7%, a little lower than RBI's estimate of 7.1%

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Coal India on Tuesday said it has registered a double-digit production growth of 10.7 per cent in January.
 The company as a whole has been averaging close to 2 MT per day coal output during the month, it said in a BSE filing.
 "Coal India Ltd (CIL) clocked double-digit growth of 10.7 per cent in coal production for the month of January 2020, till 27th (January)," it said.
 "CIL's production at 54.17 MT till January 27, was ahead by 5.23 MT in absolute terms on a like-to-like comparison of last year, registering a growth of 10.7 per cent, the first double-digit growth so far during the current fiscal," the filing said.
 A company official said the production spurt came largely on the back of production in Mahanadi Coalfields and South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) adding "by the end of January, production is likely to be up by another 8 MT."
 Mahanadi Coalfields surged ahead with 21.5 per cent production growth, as of the referred date, followed by SECL with 14.4 per cent.
 These are two of the largest producing subsidiaries of CIL, which together contribute close to half of CIL's total coal output.
 Much to the relief of the company, Dipka opencast mine of SECL, the third largest coal producing mine of CIL, came back strongly in record time reaching one lakh tonne per day production.
 Dipka's lower benches were flooded when a non-seasonal river broke the embankment and flooded the mine on September 29, 2019, it said.
 "Coal offtake at 48.07 MT, as of 27th January 2020, registered a growth of 6.2 per cent compared to same date last January...," it said.
 There is no shortage of coal in power plants, with a total of 65.66 MT currently available in the system, of which stock at CIL's pitheads is 31.41 MT.
 Thermal power plants were adequately stocked with 34.25 MT of coal (as of January 26), sufficient for 19 days consumption, it said.
 The current level of coal stock at power plants is 14.89 MT more than that of the year-ago level. In the year-ago period, it was 19.36 MT.
 "Better management of supply logistics ensured that coal stock at various power stations was maintained throughout the year and the number of critical power plants never touched double-digit during 2019-20 as per CEA," the official said.

Coal India output in January rises 10.7 pc

Nagpur, Jun 21 () Coal India Limited (CIL) will engage mine developer cum operators (MDOs) to increase its coal output and reduce import dependency of the dry fuel in the coming years. The Maharatna coal mining behemoth in the process has identified a total of 15 greenfield projects to operate through MDO model of which 12 are open cast and 3 underground, a release by Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) - subsidiary of CIL - said. Combined, they have a total targeted capacity of around 168 million tonne/year (MTY). While the OC projects have a targeted capacity of 162 MTY, UG projects have close to 6 MTY. The contract period would be for 25 years or life of mine whichever is less. "CIL will engage MDOs of international repute, having state-of-the-art-technology through open global tenders, who shall excavate, extract and deliver coal to the coal companies of CIL as per the approved mining plan. "CIL's board recently has given its nod in regard to standard bid document and request for bids for the engagement of MDOs. CIL is laying out plans to complete the formalities by 2021-22 so that all projects become operational and start yielding the output to contribute in 1 BT by 2023-24," it said. It further informed that upcoming identified projects of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, South Eastern Coalfields and Central Coalfields Limited will form major segments for the MDO mode with targeted capacities of 65.5 MTY, 52.4 MTY and 45 MTY, respectively. Eastern Coalfields Limited and Northern Coalfields Limited will have projects with targeted capacities of 3 MTY and 2 MTY, respectively. "Notice Inviting Tender (NIT) for 2 Projects, Siarmal OC of MCL (40 MTY) and Kotre-Basantpur Pachmo of CCL (5 MTY) together having a targeted capacity of 45 MTY has been floated in 2019-20. While NIT for 5 Projects for a targeted capacity of 68 MTY will be floated in the ongoing fiscal, for the balance 8 projects NIT will be floated in the fiscal, 2021- 22," the release said. It also informed reputed MDOs would be engaged to have multiple advantage of technology infusion, and operational efficiency in the system apart from increased production. CIL to engage MDOs to boost coal output

New Delhi, Feb 1 () State-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) on Saturday said it produced 451.52 million tonnes of coal in April-January period of the ongoing fiscal, a decline of 3.8 per cent.
 The company had produced 469.65 million tonnes (MT) of coal in the year-ago period, CIL said in a filing to the BSE.
 However, the PSU's coal output in January rose 10.3 per cent to 63.11 MT as compared with 57.21 MT in the corresponding month of previous fiscal.

Coal India Apr-Jan output drops 4 pc to 451 MT

With no relief in sight despite coal stocks running critically low and production disruptions looming across the Indian aluminium sector, the Aluminium Association of India (<keyword id="47439" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aai" source="Orion">AAI</keyword>) has approached the Ministry of Coal, urging the immediate resumption of adequate coal rakes for the highly power-intensive Aluminium industry. In its representation to the Ministry, the AAI has lauded the combined efforts by the Ministry of Coal and Coal India Limited in reviving domestic coal production, which has helped ease the coal supply crisis for the Power Sector. The steps undertaken by the Ministry increased the overall daily rakes dispatched from 242 rakes/day in September 2021 to 289 rakes/day in December 2021. This has drastically strengthened the coal stocks of the Power Sector to around 10 days, a marked improvement from a mere 2-3 days in the months of September-October last year. However, this has come at enormous cost to the <keyword id="629340" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Captive-Power-Plants" source="Orion">Captive Power Plants</keyword> (CPP)-based industry and the worst impacted is the Indian aluminium industry, which continues to see depleting coal stocks of only 3-4 days, abysmally low compared to the prescribed level of 15 days for the sector. Struggling to cope with this prolonged crisis since the second quarter of this fiscal year, the AAI has now sought the Ministry's support to ensure adequate supplies to the CPPs by earmarking at least 25-30 coal rakes per day to ensure viable industry operations. The need for the CPPs is especially urgent, given that Aluminium production is a continuous process that requires huge volumes of uninterrupted quality power supply. This quantum can only be met only through the in-house CPPs set up by all the aluminium smelters plants to meet this specific requirement. Accordingly, the industry has established Captive Power Plants of 9,400 MW capacity (comprising 34 per cent of the cumulative thermal CPPs capacity domestically) to supply continuous power for Aluminium operations. Even though the Government has reiterated that there is now an improved availability of coal in the country overall, the non-availability of rakes for the non-regulated sectors remains a major concern. Curtailing coal supplies to Captive Power Plants (CPPs) has directly resulted in a coal crunch situation for the Aluminium Sector. Any power interruption in an aluminium smelting operation for more than 2 hours can lead to the freezing of molten aluminium within the smelting pots, which takes a minimum of 6 months to fix, and then almost a year to once again begin yielding the desired metal output, causing enormous production, cost and supply disruptions. With the continued crisis, it will take over a year's time to clear the backlog of rakes, and for the CPPs to build and maintain adequate coal stocks for sustainable operations. The crisis further aggravates with the last-minute cancellation of coal auctions for NRS, giving no relief for the domestic industry to secure coal for manufacturing and CPP-based industries. With the ongoing revival of the economy and increased post-pandemic industrial activity, the CPP-based industries are highly dependent on uninterrupted coal supplies which is vital for sustainable operations and the continued cost-competitiveness of power intensive industries vis-a-vis global players. Any production curtailment by this sector will have cascading effect on consumption and downstream supply chain, thereby adversely impacting the nation's GDP growth. The AAI representation has gone on to highlight that since August 2021, the Non-Regulated Sector has been facing uncertainties in securing sufficient coal rakes for continued operations, with supplies limited to just 40-50 per cent of the required coal. This has led to a backlog of over 6000 coal rakes as most of the available coal and rakes are being diverted to the Power Sector as "Priority Coal Supplies", even despite their coal inventory situation drastically improving. Coal shortage now at alarming levels, say aluminium producers

New Delhi, The <keyword id="1259130" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="production-cost">production cost</keyword> of India's steel producers using the blast furnace route would remain contained in the near term due to China's ban on <keyword id="10497991" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="australian-coking-coal">Australian coking coal</keyword>, India Ratings and Research (<keyword id="1704466" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ind-Ra">Ind-Ra</keyword>) said. Accordingly, the <keyword id="10497992" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="chinese-move">Chinese move</keyword> will lead to softer coking coal prices which shall directly support EBITDA per tonne accretion of around Rs 2,600 over FY21 for companies using the blast furnace route. "Such companies are likely to have reduced cost of <keyword id="113521" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="steel-production">steel production</keyword> by around ₹1,800 per tonne YoY in 2HFY21, supported by the reduced cost of coking coal per tonne of around ₹7,300," Ind-Ra said in a report. As per Ind-Ra, China's ban has led to negative bias on coking coal prices. It expects Australia premium hard coking coal (HCC) CNF prices would be around $120 per tonne over remaining FY21, except for any weather-related supply disruptions in Australia. "Despite China's healthy steel production growth of 7% YoY in the first 7MFY21, its coking coal imports have significantly reduced by 12% as against an increase of 14% YoY in FY20, reflecting the country's increased reliance on domestic coking coal. "Considering the low coking coal imports by China in 7MFY21 and a possible further reduction amid China's ban on Australian coking coal, an excess supply would build-up unless Australian miners reduce their output considerably. "Hence, Ind-Ra understands coking coal prices would remained soft although other major coking coal importers such as India, Japan and South Korea's production levels have recovered them to pre-covid levels," Ind-Ra added. Lately, China and Australia were the largest coking coal trade partners in the world. China's imports and Australia's exports, respectively, form 40% and 65% of the world's overall coking coal trade. "As Chinese end-users are likely to increase their domestic coal production or import coking coal from countries such as Indonesia, Russia, Canada and the US, Indian buyers would gain more bargaining power with Australian coking coal. "India and China have been the largest consumers of Australian coking coal, competing with each other and composing 25% and 24% respectively, of Australia's total metallurgical coal exports." One is that metals stocks are always linked to crude oil prices and, right now, they have jumped $84 per barrel, which is probably at a recent high. Usually when crude prices go up, base commodity prices also go up, which is a good thing for metal companies,” said Deven R Choksey, managing director at KR Choksey Investment Managers told Business Insider. Currently, the crude oil prices are at $85 per barrel, trading at a 2-month high after the US oil inventory fell for the seventh straight week to levels last seen in 2018. Note that crude oil is a basic input in the production process and is used to fuel cars and planes for transportation and generate electricity for use in production of goods and services. So any change in the price of oil will impact the costs for the company and hence increase the product price. Another reason for the rise in metal prices is that companies had cut down production in recent weeks because they thought the demand wasn’t strong enough. “Anywhere across the globe particularly Europe production capacities at being pared, they (companies) are not increasing the production be it because of environment issues or covid related restrictions. Many companies have been keeping their production capacity at a lower level, which is resulting in higher prices of the product due to shortage of supply,” added Choksey. Metals are mirroring the rally in crude oil and the recent output cuts are helping

A major focus of the social, political, and economic pressure to divest is <keyword id="11955837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="coal-mining" source="Orion">coal mining</keyword>, especially thermal coal. The fossil fuel is used to generate <a href="https://www.bp.com/content/dam/bp/business-sites/en/global/corporate/pdfs/energy-economics/statistical-review/bp-stats-review-2021-full-report.pdf">34% of the world's electricity</a> but produces large amounts of carbon-dioxide and <a href="https://www.carbonbrief.org/coal-mines-emit-more-methane-than-oil-and-gas-sector-study-finds">methane</a> emissions during its production and consumption, more than oil or natural gas <a href="https://www.iea.org/data-and-statistics/data-browser/?country=WORLD&amp;fuel=CO2%20emissions&amp;indicator=CO2BySourceBySource">in 2018</a>.The recently released Intergovernmental Panel on <keyword id="11896311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">Climate Change</keyword> report has put a spotlight the urgent need to move into cleaner energy sources and reduce coal-mining activity. But <a href="https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/coal">rising prices</a> of more than $170 per metric ton (nearly four times the lowest price in September) indicate a resurgence in demand.Divestment targets the investment capital required to finance the production, distribution, and sale of coal <keyword id="11955836" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mining" source="Orion">mining</keyword>. Despite its polluting reputation, coal-fired power has been attractive to investors because of the generating capacity of the largest plants (5 gigawatts), the often cheap price, and the relative stability of its supply in high-use countries like China, India, and the US.Coal, both the kind for heating (thermal) and the manufacturing of steel (metallurgical), also makes up about 50% of the world's mining market. And the industry continues to grow, with <a href="https://globalenergymonitor.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/CoalMines_2021_r4.pdf">432 new mine developments and expansion projects</a> announced or under development worldwide, according to a survey by the Global Energy Monitor published in May. China and Australia are the leaders in <a href="https://www.worldsteel.org/en/dam/jcr:16ad9bcd-dbf5-449f-b42c-b220952767bf/fact_raw+materials_2018.pdf">two kinds of coal</a> used in steel production, coking, and metallurgy. Both are among the <a href="https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/net-zero-coalition">more than 191 countries</a> that have signed commitments for net-zero emissions by 2050. But to achieve the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, which was set by the <a href="https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/the-paris-agreement/the-paris-agreement">Paris Climate Accords</a>, the amount of coal used to manufacture steel would need to decline by 80% in the next three decades compared with current levels, according to analysis by <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/sustainability/our-insights/sustainability-blog/here-is-how-the-mining-industry-can-respond-to-climate-change">the consulting firm McKinsey</a>. Companies <a href="https://www.spglobal.com/marketintelligence/en/news-insights/latest-news-headlines/wave-of-institutional-divestment-from-coal-mining-generation-develops-in-2019-56263503">across several industries</a> have been moving away from coal, and insurers like Allianz have publicly released policies restricting coal or investments in coal-related assets."Ideally, companies close coal power plants and do not sell them," the insurance company <a href="https://www.allianz.com/content/dam/onemarketing/azcom/Allianz_com/responsibility/documents/Allianz-Statement-coal-based-business-models.pdf">wrote in a statement</a> published in May on coal-based business models. The pressure to sell off coal assets has existed for years and has reached coal companies themselves, including the global mining giants <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-07-11/biggest-miner-bhp-said-to-move-closer-to-thermal-coal-exit?sref=P6xXtEaF">BHP</a> and <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-03-28/rio-tinto-sells-last-coal-mine-kestrel/9597352#:~:text=Mining%20giant%20Rio%20Tinto%20has,Adaro%20Energy%20for%20%242.9%20billion">Rio Tinto</a>. But while global <keyword id="11955835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="coal-consumption" source="Orion">coal consumption</keyword> and production fell worldwide in 2020, and hit a <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/u-coal-consumption-hit-60-160000115.html">60-year-low</a> in the US, developing countries are leaning into coal for their economic recoveries. Last year, China increased both its output and its use of coal to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-climate-change-china-coal/china-generated-over-half-worlds-coal-fired-power-in-2020-study-idUSKBN2BK0PZ">more than half</a> the world's coal-fired power. Despite the country's plans to reach <a href="https://www.nsenergybusiness.com/news/industry-news/china-carbon-neutral-2060/">carbon neutrality</a> by 2060, China added <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-coal/chinas-new-coal-power-plant-capacity-in-2020-more-than-three-times-rest-of-worlds-study-idUSKBN2A308U">38.4 gigawatts</a> of coal-fired power capacity last year - more than three times the amount built anywhere else worldwide, Reuters reported, citing international research.The increase in coal-fired electricity generation in India for this year is expected to be <a href="https://www.iea.org/reports/global-energy-review-2021/co2-emissions">three times higher</a> than renewables. This increase in demand is expected to push carbon-dioxide emissions from coal in 2021 to <a href="https://www.iea.org/reports/global-energy-review-2021/co2-emissions">640 million metric tons</a>, the highest levels since 2011. For divestment of coal to be successful and global climate goals to be met, it will require greater regulations, economic disincentives, and a true understanding of how carbon emissions do not care about national borders.
