India's <keyword id="19922493" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="coal" source="keywords">coal</keyword>-based power generation increased 7.14% to 872 billion units (BU) in the April-December period of the current fiscal. The rise in domestic coal-based electricity generation reflects an ample supply of coal to meet the growing energy demand in the country, the <keyword id="19922492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-ministry" source="keywords">coal ministry</keyword> said in a statement. <br /><br /> Domestic coal-based power generation was 813.9 BU in the year-ago period, it said. <br /><br /> In the country, power is generated from conventional sources -- thermal, nuclear and hydro-- and renewable sources -- wind, solar, biomass etc. Thermal power producers use coal as the main fuel to run the units and the dry fuel contributes to more than 70% of the total electricity generation. <br /><br /> Coal-based power generation in the country registered a growth of around 10.13% during April-December period of FY'24, as compared to the corresponding period of previous year while overall power generation grew 6.71% during the same period, the ministry statement said. <br /><br /> Coal imports for blending dropped by 40.66% to 17.08 MT during April-December period of current fiscal from 28.78 MT in the corresponding period of previous year, despite the rising power demand. <br /><br /> "It showcases the nation's commitment to self-reliance in coal production and minimising overall coal imports," it said. <br /><br /> Coal-based power generation has played a significant role in meeting India's energy demands. The country is experiencing a substantial increase in power demand, driven by a combination of factors like industrial growth, technological advancements, population growth, and economic development.

India VIX dipped by 2.41%, while small cap 50 plunged by 1.03%. As for sectoral indices, media (down by 1.89%) and realty (down by 1.70%) saw the maximum dips, while bank, FMCG, financial services ,oil and gas, healthcare and pharma closed the day in green. <br /><br />Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares says that Indian bourses began the August month on a strong note above the psychological barrier of 25,000. <br /><br />"But, negative divergence in RSI pulled the Index lower to settle the trade at 25,010.90 with gains of 59.75 points. Among the sectors, Energy was the top gainer while media and realty corrected the most. Broader markets underperformed the frontline index as mid and small caps corrected by 0.85% &amp; 0.98% respectively. The Index has formed a Spinning Top candlestick pattern which represents indecisiveness where the downside seems to be protected at 24,930 while the immediate resistance is placed at 25,100", he continued. <br />

Let's take a look at these efforts and compare them with findings from other recent environmental reports to see the full picture.<br /><h2><keyword id="21818512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="emission-intensity" source="keywords">Emission intensity</keyword> reduction</h2>The economic survey proudly states that India has reduced the emission intensity of its GDP by 33% from 2005 levels by 2019. This means the country is producing less greenhouse gas for every unit of economic activity.<br /><br />This is a commendable achievement because India’s original climate change target — or Nationally Determined Contribution — was set to precisely 33% reduction of emission intensity by 2030, before being revised to 45% in 2022. While the jump from 33% to 45% is still a significant one with barely half a decade to go, this progress is a clear sign that India’s climate policies are having a real impact.<br /><h2><keyword id="19895602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="keywords">Renewable energy</keyword> capacity</h2>According to the economic survey, 45.4% of India’s installed electricity generation capacity — which includes solar, wind, and hydropower — now comes from non-fossil sources, as of May 31, 2024. <br /><div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111774972" title="Economic Survey shows India&amp;#39;s energy needs to grow 2.5x, healthy growth in formal employment" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>As per reports by the Ministry of New &amp; Renewable Energy, India added a record renewable energy capacity of 18.48 GW in 2023-2024, with solar installations amounting to 12.78 GW, followed by 2.27 GW of wind energy. However, industry experts have also noted that India Inc. cannot afford to run out of steam now, and must continue to add at least 50 GW for the next six years to meet the target of 500 GW of renewables by 2030.<br /><h2>Indian energy needs</h2>India's energy needs are expected to grow 2 to 2.5 times by 2047, as per the latest economic survey. This necessitates a balanced approach to <keyword id="19951336" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="energy-transition" source="keywords">energy transition</keyword> that considers resource limitations and the need for resilience to climate change.<br /><br />India has suffered from an overdependence on coal and fossil fuels in the past, accounting for around 75% of total energy generation in 2021, as per the Energy Information Administration. However, this number has been quickly falling, even dropping below a historic 50% in Q1 2024.<br /><h2>Sovereign <keyword id="20177085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-bonds" source="keywords">green bonds</keyword></h2>To fund green projects, India issued Rs 16,000 Crore in sovereign green bonds — financial instruments that support green projects at lower capital costs — in early 2023 and another Rs 20,000 Crore later in the year, the economic survey reports. As per the government, these proceeds were utilised in many eco-friendly projects, such as New and Renewable Energy, Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Housing and Urban Affairs, Railways. To widen the investor base, the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) also recently permitted eligible foreign investors to invest in such bonds.<br /><h2>Mission LiFE and Green Credit Programme</h2>The survey also talks extensively about Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), which promotes sustainable living, and the Green Credit Programme (GCP), which incentivises eco-friendly actions by offering “green credits”.<br /><br />In the past few months, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and a few other states have reportedly approved thousands of hectares of degraded forest land for greening exercises as part of the GCP.<br /><h2>International initiatives</h2>India has spearheaded several international initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), One World, One Sun, One Grid (OSOWOG), the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), the Infrastructure for Resilient Island States’ (IRIS) and the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT). On the right track — Economic Survey 2023-24 outlines India’s commendable climate action

<br /><ul><li>34.7 crore <keyword id="20290357" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ayushmann-bharat" source="keywords">Ayushmann Bharat</keyword> cards generated </li><li>Avg growth of the manufacturing sector at 5% over last decade</li><li>Reduction in dependence on non-institutional credit </li></ul><br />The <keyword id="6354872" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="economic-survey" source="Orion">Economic Survey</keyword> 2023-24 noted that the country's energy requirements are set to burgeon by 2-2.5x by 2027, underlining the need for energy efficiency and seamlessly transitioning to clean energy solutions. <br /><br />By means of sovereign green bonds, the government managed to raise Rs 16,000 crore between January-February 2023, alongside an additional Rs 20,000 crore between October and December 2023. <br /><br />As for social security, Ayushmann Bharat, of which over 34.7 crore cards have been generated, has saved over Rs 1.25 lakh crore of OPD expenses of the poor and under-privileged families. <br /><br />The country's labor market has also seen solid improvement, with unemployment rates declining to 3.2% in 2022-23. The net payroll additions under Employee Provident Fund Organization has also doubled over the past 5 years, signaling a healthy growth in formal employment. As per the survey, care economy and agro-processing are the two key areas where there is untapped potential for boosting quality employment, and increasing women participation in the labor force. <br /><br />The agriculture sector has registered an average annual growth of 4.18% over the last 5 years, with the sector growing about 1.4% during 2023-24, as per provisional estimates. To provide further fillip to the sector, the government has been focused on reducing the sector's dependence on non-institutional, informal credit. As a result, its share has come down from 90% in 1950, to just 23.4% in 2021-22. However, as the survey observed, the country's agricultural growth policies should be consistent with climate change and water security practises.<br /><br /><h2>Thrust on MSMEs, manufacturing and clean energy</h2>Over the last decade, the manufacturing sector managed to mark an average annual growth rate of 5.2%, majorly driven by chemicals, wood products and furniture, transport equipment, pharmaceuticals, machinery, and equipment. <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> also emerged as a net exporter of finished steel over the last 10 years, and was a significant producer and consumer of the same during FY24. <br /><br />India's indigenous coal production also jumped up, with India actively working to reduce its import dependence. In FY 24, India producued 997.2 million tonnes of coal, imported 261 million tonnes, and consumed 1233.86 million tonnes.<br /><br />India's pharma market, valued at $50 billion, is the 3rd largest in the world, and India ranks prominently amongst clothing manufacturing nations as well. As of FY24, it is the second largest manufacturer, and one of the top 5 exporting nations of clothing, with the export of textiles and apparel, including handicrafts increasing by 1% to reach Rs 2.97 lakh crore.<br /><br />A similar growth was witnessed in India's electronics manufacturing segment, making up for 3.7% of global market share, with exports rising to Rs 1.9 lakh Crore in FY23. Per the survey, "the PLI schemes for key sectors have attracted significant investments, boosted production, sales and exports and generated jobs, particularly in the case of white goods. Keeping in view India’s vision of becoming ‘Aatmanirbhar’, over Rs 1.28 Lakh Crore of investment was reported until May 2024, which has led to production/sales of Rs 10.8 Lakh Crore and employment generation (direct &amp; indirect) of over Rs 8.5 Lakh under PLI scheme". <br /><br />Focus has also been on boosting research, development, innovation and entrepreneurship in the country. The number of granted patents increased seventeen-fold from 5,978 in 2014-15 to 1,03,057 in 2023-24. More than 45% of the recognised start-ups are emerging from Tier 2/3 cities.<br /><br />The country's services sector contributed to about 55% of the total size of the economy in FY24. The clean energy sector in the country also saw new investment of Rs 8.5 lakh crore  between 2014 and 2023. India is prominently making a mark in space, with 55 active space assets, out of which 18 are communication satellites, nine navigation satellites, five scientific satellites, three Meteorological Satellites, and 20 are Earth Observation satellites.<br /><br />

Budget 2024: Key sustainability and energy initiatives that Indian government plans to implement this year

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Coal billionaire Gautam Adani is building the world's largest power plant, and it's all renewable.</li><li>Adani's nephew, who's in charge of the project, says there's "no choice" but to go big on green energy.</li></ul><p>The largest power plant in the world is under construction, and it'll produce enough clean energy to fuel entire countries like Belgium, Chile, or Switzerland.</p><p>It will cover 200 square miles — nearly the size of Chicago.</p><p>Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) is building the solar and wind power plant in a salt desert in the western Indian state of Gujarat. AGEL is the clean energy unit of the Adani Group, the biggest coal miner and importer in India founded by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-gautam-adani-indian-industrialist-billionaire-wealth-elon-musk-2022-12">billionaire Gautam Adani</a> in 1988. Adani is currently the second richest person in Asia, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbesindia.com/article/explainers/top-10-richest-people-asia/88245/1">according to Forbes</a>.</p><p>The Adani Group has promised to dump $70 billion into clean energy by 2030 — including $20 billion on this project alone — as India tries to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/19/business/india-adani-green-energy-plant-climate-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN reported</a>.</p><p>"There is no choice for India but to start doing things at a previously unimagined size and scale," Sagar Adani, the 30-year-old nephew of Gautum Adani and the executive director of AGEL, told CNN.</p><p>India — the <a target="_blank" href="https://climatepromise.undp.org/what-we-do/where-we-work/india">third-largest energy consumer in the world</a>, 73% of which comes from coal — has pledged to reach net-zero emissions by 2070, two <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/us-long-term-strategy.pdf">decades later than the US has pledged</a>. India also hopes to get half of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.</p><p>And AGEL's massive new plant could be a major step in making that happen.</p><p>The project, expected to be finished in five years, will create 15,200 green jobs and produce enough clean energy to power 16 million Indian homes, AGEL <a target="_blank" href="https://www.adanigreenenergy.com/newsroom/media-releases/Adani-Green-Energy-operationalizes-1000-MW-of-the-30000-MW-Khavda-renewable-energy-park">said in a press release on its website</a>.</p><p>As India develops, Sagar Adani told CNN he hopes his country does not burn through as much fossil fuel as other countries did during their developments.</p><p>"If India does what China did, if India does what Europe did, if India does what the US did, then we are all in for a very, very bleak climatic future," Sagar Adani told the outlet.</p><p>However, AGEL's plant and green energy commitments are still built on profits from coal production.</p><p>The Adani Group's coal mining operations make up at least 3% of the world's coal-based carbon dioxide emissions, and the group makes 62% of its revenue from fossil fuel, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2022-09-09/world-s-third-richest-billionaire-adani-pivots-from-coal-mogul-to-green-champion?sref=yaJhKSOh">Bloomberg reported</a>.</p>

Stock-specific buying can be anticipated in the IT segment. Few fertilizer counters have given a strong breakout, namely Chambal Fertilizers and GNFC. <br /><br />Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research at Kotak Securities highlighted that yesterday, the benchmark indices continued non-directional activity, the Nifty ended 21 points higher while the Sensex was up by 100 points. Among Sectors, the energy index rallied over 1% whereas intraday profit bookings were seen in selective pharma and healthcare stocks. <br /><br />"Technically, after an intraday rally again the market witnessed profit booking near 24,950/81,800, which is mildly negative. We are of the view that the larger texture of the market is positive. However, a fresh uptrend rally is possible only after the dismissal of 24,950/81,800. Above that, the market could move up till 25,050-25,200/82,000-82,400. On the flip side, below 24,800/81,200 we could see further weakness till 24,700/81,000. If the markets are really strong then we can see a strong reversal after hitting the levels of 24,700/81,000. In case the market sustains below 24,700 then we could see the level of 24,500 in the near term", he continued. <br /><br />
