<ul><li>Over three quarters or 78% of Indian CEOs say that global economic growth will decline in the next 12 months. </li><li>After the economic downturn, CEOs are also worried about inflation and macroeconomic volatility in the short-term (12 months) and over the next five years. </li><li>As much as 85% of India CEO’s said they do not plan to reduce headcount, and 96% said they do not plan to reduce compensation either. </li></ul>Indian CEOs are the most pessimistic they’ve ever been in the last 12 years, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) annual CEO survey. Over three quarters or 78% of them believe that the global economic growth will decline in the next 12 months. This is a significant departure from the optimistic outlooks seen in 2021 and 2022, the survey said. However, 57% of CEOs also expressed optimism about the Indian economy. “Despite signs of a global economic slowdown, continuing high inflation and the ripple effects of the conflict in Europe, there is optimism among India CEOs about the country’s economic growth. To survive over the next few years, CEOs will need to manage external risks and drive profitability,” said Sanjeev Krishan, chairperson of PwC in India. India CEOs have faced more headwinds than tailwinds in the last couple of years but have nonetheless managed to stay the course, the report says. PwC’s 26th Annual Global CEO Survey polled 4,410 CEOs in 105 countries and territories, including 68 from India. Even in difficult times when most global CEOs are prioritising cost-cutting, Indian CEOs are keen on retaining talent. As much as 85% of them said they do not plan to reduce headcount, and 96% said they do not plan to reduce compensation either. Economic downturn on top of mind A year ago, most CEOs were worried about cyber or health risks, but this year, the impact of the economic downturn is top of mind. Inflation and macroeconomic volatility are also stressing them the most as they identify these as a risk both in the short-term (12 months) and over the next five years. Climate change comes next, followed by financial exposure to geopolitical conflict risks and cyber risks. “The conflict in Ukraine and growing concerns about geopolitical flashpoints in other parts of the world have caused India CEOs to rethink aspects of their business models, with almost half of the respondents that are exposed to geopolitical conflict integrating a wider range of disruptions into scenario planning and corporate operating models,” the report said. Those holding the top jobs at companies are trying to mitigate risks by increasing investments in cybersecurity or data privacy, said half of those polled. But the most common change that they are making is adjusting supply chains, as 67% claim to be doing that. The rest are re-evaluating market presence or expanding into new markets or diversifying their product/service offering. A different new world Indian CEOs are also weighed down by long-term worries, as 41% of CEOs believe that they do not expect their companies to be economically viable in ten years if they continue on their current path. They also see multiple challenges to profitability within their industries, as they believe they would be operating in a much different scenario than they are used to. “To survive over the next few years, CEOs will need to manage external risks and drive profitability. In the long term they will also need to reimagine, reinvent and reconfigure their businesses and work culture to thrive. Importantly, they need to act on both now, and simultaneously,” said Krishan. Around 62% of India CEOs believe that changing customer demand will impact profitability in their respective industries over the next ten years to a large or very large extent. This is followed by 54% who are concerned about changes in regulations. The next most common worry is disruption that will be caused by advanced tech, AI, metaverse, blockchain etc. Around 49% of them said that supply chain disruptions will also worry them in the next ten years. “Certain sectors such as pharmaceuticals, automotive, consumer electronics and chemicals have significant dependence on materials imported from countries such as China, Taiwan and Japan. These factors cause India CEOs to worry about supply chain disruption, uncertain lead times, heightened freight rates and commodity prices,” the report said. In an exclusive interaction with ANI Skoda Auto Brand Director Petr Janeba says Skoda's European bestseller, the Enyaq EV, was initially slated for an Indian debut this year but postponed to next year for an updated version. Janeba says a significant facelift planned for the model in March has led the company to hold off until the new version, featuring Skoda's latest design language, is ready. He said, "We have one of the best-selling EVs in Europe our European Enyaq. The car was tested, and the car was prepared for India. We have actually stopped bringing the car this year. Because there will be a huge facelift of the Skoda Enyaq coming in March following the new design language." He added, "We actually can choose one of the three EV cars coming to India or all three." Skoda is closely monitoring India's changing EV policies, especially the CAFE3 (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) norms set to be introduced in April 2027. On further investment in India Janeba highlighted the importance of a consistent regulatory environment, as state-level EV and hybrid tax policies currently vary widely, impacting long-term planning. "And within this plan, we understand nobody can survive in India without having a deeper localised CKD EV in India. We are ready for this. We are ready in Pune to make another investment for the car and for the production to get it. At the end of the day, we still take our time in order to decide the right measure car for the market, seeing the new competitors coming on the EVs." Said Janeba Skoda already has two manufacturing units in India, in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Pune. EVs are planned to be manufactured in their Pune plant For the production, he stated, "In the same factory in Pune, Chakan we will be producing EVs. Currently we have increased because of the Kylaq the production capacity in Pune to 250,000 units a year and we will be increasing further once it is needed either for the current cars because of the export or because of the Indian demand or for the new cars like EVs." The facility is also set to support EV production with deep localisation efforts to make Skoda's electric lineup more affordable for Indian consumers. Piyush Arora, India CEO, Skoda Auto echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence that Skoda's expanded product offerings will capture the growing sub-four-meter SUV segment, a category that represents nearly 30 per cent of India's automotive market. <ul><li>The first half of 2020 was so unusual and unprecedented that the ad industry took a nosedive to as low as -60%.</li><li>Businesses of all kinds and sizes suffered and put their advertising activities on hold to give their consumers space to process the unprecedented times.</li><li>So, after a year and a half of lull, brands and advertisers went all out with their marketing activities during the festive season this year. Consumers were extra excited to step out, shop zealously and as most research studies reflected, Diwali exceeded expectations and broke previous records.</li><li>So, we speak to media experts and digital agencies to find out if the advertising industry has managed to bounce back this year, discuss the industry’s spending so far and their expectations from the last festival of the season, Christmas.</li></ul>After a year and a half of celebrating festivals virtually, Indian consumers were excited to have some sense of normalcy back this year during the festive season. Advertisers and brands also went all out to leverage on this uptick in consumer sentiment, starting from Raksha Bandhan to Diwali. Experts were also hopeful that the festive season will bring in cheer and serve as a respite from the pandemic-associated slumber. According to Redseer Consulting, 2021 saw India witness its biggest ever Festive Sales with brands clocking a Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of $9.2 billion through online channels over this period. Online Festive Sales in India continued to grow at a blistering pace and saw a 23% YoY growth in GMV. On the other hand, the categories that witnessed subdued growth this year included the likes of home furnishings, home decor, furnishings and other electronics. Looking back at 2020, Eeshita Ghosh, General Manager and Office Head, Motivator Bangalore said, “The festival of 2021 is definitely better than 2020 and as high if not more than 2019. The ad volume started picking up from Q3 of 2021 and with more than 20% growth over 2019 Q3. The festival months saw multiple new advertisers getting active, approximately 2000+ new advertisers are active in media. The inventory was full, and the market sentiments were very positive. With festival and IPL, media was very active with multiple new categories.” A lot of hopes were banking on the festive season for the industry's overall revival, however, unlike Ghosh, Neena Dasgupta, CEO &amp; Director, Zirca Digital Solutions was a little disappointed; not with the numbers but with overall creativity. Explaining why, Dasgupta said, “Honestly, the performance fell short of expectations. Not only in terms of volume but also the kind of activities. I felt our methods possibly regressed a bit to remain cautious and conservative. Innovative ideas were few and yet each of them benefited. The consumer is now more aware and it’s time we took their psychometric into consideration. And at times where media dollars need to be more efficient and effective, we have to embrace tech that allows us to capture the consumer mindset and then deploy media buys across mediums.” Sharing how the festive season has panned out so far for the advertising industry, Dasgupta added, “It’s been an interesting festive season. There was exuberance in the consumer spirit and it reflected in some categories. And yet the exuberance didn’t necessarily translate into communication to the same scale. This was possibly a combination of inflation, economic imbalance at consumer levels and some category constraints that impacted sales. What was interesting g though was the growth in rural activities at the consumer end and advertising end too. Every medium had its share. And fintech growth made some aspirations real for this segment. We now have a fascinating growth story for Bharat.” With a steady monsoon and plump harvest so far, it was a cheerful year for rural India as well. They spent their harvest festivals with more enthusiasm and happiness to share with their loved ones. Brands also left no stone unturned to expand their marketing activities beyond metro and Tier I cities this year. In fact, this year, Tier II and III had the lion’s share in e-commerce spends. Will we return to 2019’s ad spends? After June, the advertising industry’s performance picked up by leaps and bounds. Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh Chaturthi and ace festival Diwali, improved consumer sentiment and helped the advertising industry to bounce back. But have we returned to 2019’s levels? “The ADEX numbers for October and November are yet to come, but as we observed from our billing, we are positive that it has bounced back to 2019 levels,” said Ghosh. Dasgupta told Advertising and Media Insider that regional and rural markets exceeded 2019’s performance but some markets are yet to reach there. Decoding media dispersion this festive season While there was buoyancy across the board, television got the most attention from advertisers yet again, followed by digital. Talking about medium dispersion, Monaz Todywalla, CEO at PHD Media India said, “In terms of mediums, television and digital continue to drive impact and lead from the front, with digital playing a vital role in ensuring last-mile connectivity and driving sales across multiple touchpoints. Raman Mittal, CMO and Co-Founder, TO THE NEW was delighted to see digital getting a bigger piece of pie than 2020. He said, "COVID revolutionized the way people shop. We saw businesses go all out on digital channels this Diwali season to communicate with potential clients. Companies have adjusted their attention on digital marketing to stay up with new shopping channels and get the biggest piece of the pie as a result of continual digital transformation." "Interaction and Influencers were the two themes that peaked this festive season," Raman continued. "Giveaways, contests, and online polls were used to promote interactive content. In addition, the top celebrities were enlisted to help brands stand out amid the crowd. These tendencies, we believe, will last well into Christmas and New Year." Within digital, video got the most attention and while traditional advertisers continued to spend heavily, they were matched and at times exceeded by online services/startups. Mihir Karkare, Cofounder and EVP of Mirum India said, "The videos ruled the roost this festive season. Online video platforms were in great demand – YouTube and OTT were the preferred choices for brands. Apart from Diwali, all the cricketing action also contributed heavily towards increased advertising spends. From a 'growth of share' standpoint, Influencer marketing as come of age." Hopes rest on Christmas Christmas is the last festival of the year. Will it give an additional impetus and help the advertising industry exceed 2019’s performance? “Christmas is a bit low, but we have seen many advertisers continuing with the momentum built during the Q3 period. I expect Q4 to be like Q2 and will be higher than Q4 of 2020 and close to 2019 Q4,” answered Ghosh. PHD Media’s Todywalla is optimistic that the momentum will continue and brands will keep up with their marketing blitzkrieg. “With consumers showing an increased propensity to spend, pent-up demand from brands translating into a bouquet of launches - complimented by high-decibel marketing campaigns, and an overall increase in consumption and sales from all corners of the media and entertainment ecosystem, the festivities have ushered in a season that's peppered with a healthy dose of optimism. We believe this wave of hope and optimism is expected to be carried forth into the coming year too," said Todywalla. With a huge push from key festivals such as Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi and Raksha Bandhan, cautious optimism continues to thrive in the advertising industry.

There are many categories in discretionary spending which are still having high sales. The impact of this reduced sentiment however isn’t as bad, especially in discretionary spends. “The consumer sentiment isn't as negatively impacted as people are projecting it to be,” Shrenik Gandhi, co-founder and CEO of digital marketing agency White Rivers Media, told Business Insider India. He noted that the sales will be soft for a few months before they pick up. Contrary to the popular opinion, he noted that the festive sales growth might be muted compared to last year as the trends of revenge buying and pent-up demand have faded away. “I think this year’s festive season will be much better than the previous two years, with consumer spend increasing,” Chandramouli said, differing from Singhal’s opinion. Amazon, Flipkart and Myntra sales – all unaffected by low consumer sentiment

As much as 71% of them are looking to bet on this asset class in the next 12-24 months, as per a Sotheby’s survey. Most of them see it as an investment as 44% of them picked capital appreciation as the reason they’d buy a property in the next 1-2 years. This reason trumped lifestyle upgrade and income generation. Most of the affluent Indians surveyed in annual <keyword id="20154622" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="luxury-outlook-survey" source="keywords">Luxury Outlook Survey</keyword> 2024 own multiple properties. This indicates that investors are back in the market, and many of them are keen on holding on to them for the long-term to create wealth for the next generation. “There’s also a shift in sentiments that aligns with a broader acknowledgment of real estate's enduring value and potential for sustained financial growth. We believe investors are strategically positioning themselves for wealth accumulation and creating multi-generational wealth through real estate investments," said <keyword id="20241942" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashwin-chaddha" source="keywords">Ashwin Chaddha</keyword>, CEO, India Sotheby's International Realty. Holiday homes &amp; farm houses Commercial real estate which generates rent was the most preferred sub-set. Holiday homes, farm houses and agricultural land were the other popular choices. “We observe an increasing trend of owning farmhouses in suburbs/ city peripheries, driven by the need for larger spaces, open green areas, work from home, privacy, and amenities such as a private swimming pool,” the report said. In other notable findings, 35% of holiday home buyers expressed <keyword id="19895061" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="goa" source="keywords">Goa</keyword> as their preferred destination. It highlights the enduring appeal of Goa's lifestyle among India's wealthy, Sotheby’s notes. Desire to invest in overseas property remained stable at 12%. Their top choices are Dubai, UAE, and USA.

The country's total gold demand stood at 774.1 tonnes in 2022, according to the World Gold Council (<keyword id="20256712" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wgc" source="keywords">WGC</keyword>) Gold Demand Trends report 2023. "India's gold demand in 2023 declined by 3 per cent to 747.5 tonnes, strongly influenced by rising gold prices. Although consumer interest remained high, it lagged trade sentiment. October's price correction during <keyword id="20023931" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="navratri" source="keywords">Navratri</keyword> stimulated a robust consumer response, boosting Diwali sales in November. "However, demand declined in December as gold prices resumed an upward trend, resulting in a 9 per cent drop in fourth quarter jewellery demand compared to the same period of 2022," <keyword id="20399154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wgc-regional" source="keywords">WGC Regional</keyword> CEO, India, Somasundaram PR told PTI. Price of gold was volatile throughout 2023, with the yellow metal reaching a new high of Rs 61,845 per 10 gm on May 4 in the domestic market and USD 2,083 an ounce in global markets, and this trend continued with the precious metal reaching another high of Rs 61,914 per 10 grams in November 16. Looking forward to 2024, India's gold demand should benefit from ongoing positive economic conditions and if the prices hold out are not significantly volatile there is likely to be a big spurt in demand which could be anywhere between 800-900 tonnes, he said. "The subdued demand range of 700-800 tonnes since 2019 attributable to continuous rise in prices, increase in duties, stock market outperformance, near-term elections spending impact and acceptance of elevated price levels, suggest the potential for a spurt in demand in the near future. However, any short-term impediments to higher demand could arise from another round of sharp price hikes and volatility triggered by global factors," he added. The total jewellery demand in India dropped by 6 per cent to 562.3 tonnes in 2023, compared to 600.6 tonnes in the previous year, the report stated. Meanwhile, the total gold investment demand in the country grew by 7 per cent to 185.2 tonnes, compared to 173.6 tonnes in the previous year, the WGC report said. "Bar and coin investment in India rebounded, growing by 7 per cent to 185 tonnes year-on-year. The fourth quarter demand touched 67 tonnes, 64 per cent above the five-year quarterly average. "The correction in gold prices led to some robust investment responses in third and fourth quarters, supported by increased interest from physically backed gold ETF investors, setting total holdings in Indian-listed products to a record 42 tonnes by year-end," Somasundaram said. He said that recycling was 20 per cent higher due to low and supportive higher prices but at 117 tonnes, could be considered the normative expected level. Total gold imported to India in 2023 was 780.7 tonnes, up by 20 per cent compared to 650.7 tonnes in 2022, according to the report. "Net gold imports surged by 20 per cent to 780.7 tonnes in 2023, primarily due to substantial inventory building by the trade. "In 2024, gold imports are likely to be higher than the demand. The various Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) India has inked with many countries are expected to boost gold imports further this year," noted Somasundaram.
