The idea of buying ‘real’ Art has been limited to few who could blow a few Crores to hang a big name on the wall. The list included Art Connoisseurs and businessmen who could indulge in the luxury of investing and curating art pieces. Not anymore. 
 
The democratization of Art in India and the convenience of the Internet has seen many independent artists making a name for themselves by selling affordable art. 
 
Meet <a href="http://cupick.com/">Cupick</a>, a platform that helps monetize one’s creative assets by putting it on consumable products. It currently sells t-shirts, hoodies, posters, art prints, canvases and cards. 
 
Artists choose the products they want to sell, the price, and the company takes care of everything else. There is also a community where artists can follow, collaborate and interact with others of their kind. 
 
“Cupick is about making art consumable and accessible. The world’s so much better if we have a lot more beauty around”, Justin Alva, Co-founder and CMO says. 
 
DeviantArt and Behance have been the biggest platforms for visual artists around the world to showcase their work. However, they may not be the best places to monetize. Sites like Cupick are India’s answer to RedBubble and SocietySix when it comes to affordable art. 
 
The company has recently garnered $120K worth investments from Indian and overseas investors. Does it indicate to a changing Indian art scenario? 
 
“The boom in the economy has allowed people to spend on things that interest them. We want to make consumables aesthetic, and there is a huge market for it”, Alva says. 
 
The average price for the smallest poster size on the site is around Rs. 200. The costliest could be at Rs. 500 while the average size Art prints go for anything from Rs. 600 to Rs. 800 for the smallest size. So what Art could you possibly buy so cheap? 
 
“A lot of Indian artists between the ages of 21 to 30 have signed up. 30% are from outside of India. There have been signups from Indonesia, Korea, China, Europe, Mexico, US, Columbia, Chile and others. We have artists from 30 countries, give or take a few”, Alva informs. 
 
So how is Cupick different from other T-shirt and poster brands? “Shoppers on Cupick can expect a diverse range, not just pop or quirk”, Alva says. 
 
What’s the way forward for Cupick? 
 
“We have plans to add to product development and expand product categories. Our core focus over the coming months however is to get artists using Cupick and to be Asia’s largest Art catalog. We haven’t ruled out the possibility of partnering with other e-commerce sites”, Alva says.

The Indian Affordable Art Bazaar

Gone are the days when art was limited to galleries, displayed only behind closed doors and walls were stained with paan, scribbles, urine, posters and lack of general apathy. 
 
Now, tables have turned, all thanks to the St+Art Foundation, a non-profit organisation that works on art spaces in public spaces, which is hosting the Sr+Art Festival in the national capital for the second consecutive year. 
 
This year, they aimed big. They wanted to embed art into the cities we live in- and what better city to start with than the national capital of the country itself? 
 So, the result is this- over 14 artists from <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> and all across the world have come together to paint their heart out on walls and as a result creating India's very first open air public art district in <keyword id="6411894" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lodhi-Colony">Lodhi Colony</keyword>. 
 
Though the work that started in December 2015 is still in progress, presently several walls between Khanna Market and Meherchand Market are a spectacle lending themselves as an open air art gallery. 
 
Prepare to be mesmerized when you cross Meherchand Market and end up noticing a mural of freedom fighter Rani Lakshmi Bai painted by Lady Aiko, a Japanese artist or catch yourself reading the painted poem on the walls of Lodhi in Block 11 written by the painter Neils Shoe Meulman himself. His calligraffiti will be hard to look away from. 
 
It reads: Sans Serifs No Letters, And No Words To Read, Sans Words No Signs, No Names In The Streets, Just Rows Of Buildings, And Gardens Sans Weeds. 
 
There will be more art adorning the walls as you pass by the Colony and while you pass each mural, remarkably different than the previous one, you will be forced to catch your breath for a moment-at the sheer brilliance of the work of these artists, most of whom have been successful in completing painting over a wall in under 4-5 days. 
 
Their weapons of choice? Rollers, stencils, spray cans and last but not the least, their free hand. 
 
Built on the foundation of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the initiative focuses on creatively spreading the message of maintaining a cleaner physical environment. “Art has the potential to create a positive impact on a city and its residents, while also paving the way towards making people more conscious about their environment. Through the creation of India’s first public art district, we hope to work with the government on more projects to create a sustainable approach towards the Swachh Bharat Mission,” says, Arjun Bahl, co-founder and festival director, St+Art India.

Welcome to Lodhi Colony- India's first open air public art district

Seven rare antiques that were smuggled out of India to the US have been recovered from the <keyword id="2791710" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honolulu-Museum-of-Art">Honolulu Museum of Art</keyword>. The antiques were allegedly stolen by notorious art dealer <keyword id="6369706" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Subhash-Kapoor">Subhash Kapoor</keyword>. 
 
According to the US authorities, the museums was not aware that the period pieces were stolen when they were added to the collection between 1991 and 2003. The US officials are expected to return these objects to the Indian government. 
 
As per the ET report, officials learnt that the 2000 year old terracotta rattle that was in Kapoor’s art gallery in New York City has been taken to the museum’s collection. 
 
On investigation, six other antiques including figurines, architectural fragments, and tiles in possession of the museum were discovered to be smuggled. It should be noted that Kapoor was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice and was arrested in late 2011 in Germany. He was later extradited to India and is currently awaiting trial. 
 
"Looting is a serious problem in the art market and all buyers of art, including museums, need to be mindful that some antiquities have been illegally obtained," Honolulu Museum of Art director Stephan Jost said in the report. 
 "Over the past several years, American art museums have become progressively more rigorous in vetting the history of objects they acquire. Clearly the museum could have done better in the past. We hope that bringing attention to this problem and doing the right thing will help reduce looting of cultural objects. Partnering with <keyword id="350775" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="HSI">HSI</keyword> is the most effective way to combat this ongoing issue," Jost added. 
 
In 2007, the Indian consulate to the US, had requested HIS’s assistance in investigating and recovering several artifacts that were smuggled from India to New York. By the mid of 2012, the HIS agents by the end of July 2012, had recovered several antiques worth $100 million. 
 
The stolen artifact included a five foot tall head of Buddha, a life-sized stone figure, a bronze sculpture of goddess Parvati which is estimated to be about $2.5 million and 2nd century BC Bharhut Stupa Yaksi pillar sculpture valued at nearly USD 18 million.

The Indian art market is on course to have its best-performing year ever based on the first six months of FY23. Having a turnover of USD 75.8 million as of 30 September 2022, according to Indian Art Investor's <keyword id="15302035" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-art-market-report" source="Orion">Indian Art Market Report</keyword> for H1FY23, FY23 may exceed FY22. The first six months of FY23 have been able to produce more than the yearly turnover of 34 of the 39 years of prior auction data held by <keyword id="6515833" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="iai" source="Orion">IAI</keyword>. The study states that a total of 468 artists - or 57 per cent of the works sold in FY22-have contributed to this accomplishment through the sale of 2,053 pieces. "The top tier of the market continues to break norms and make headlines. Works priced &gt;USD 1.2 million are responsible for 67 per cent of the turnover, with the top 5 most expensive works alone bringing in 20 per cent. But as the divide widens, so does the lowest tier. Works priced Commenting on the report findings, <keyword id="964124" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pallavi-bakhru" source="Orion">Pallavi Bakhru</keyword>, Partner, Private Client Services at <keyword id="10410446" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="grant-thornton-bharat" source="Orion">Grant Thornton Bharat</keyword>, said, "With a staggering USD 75.8 million being generated in the first half of the current FY, people are now understanding that the Indian art market is a great space for alternate investment portfolios. With a sharp increase in income, there has been an increase in demand for art. And while art was mostly considered a collectable and a luxury item, it has slowly and steadily moved into the category of a capital asset, which by definition provides benefits over a long period of time. Although traditional buyers remain a force in driving the market, there is an influx of new collectors who find art safe and are warming up to the idea of art as an investment option." The top 10 most expensive works sold in H1FY23 were equally distributed between Q1 and Q2. These ten pieces were responsible for 27 per cent of the entire turnover produced over those six months. Seven of these pieces belonged to <keyword id="99619" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="modernists" source="Orion">modernists</keyword>, and three were pre-modernist pieces. The majority of the works sold and 81 per cent of the overall revenue made during this time period are by modernists. Since oil was the medium used most frequently by Modernists, it made up 57 per cent of the overall revenue. Because canvas is thought to be the material of choice for oil, it accounted for 75 of the revenue. Online auctions have completely revolutionised the market and now makeup 86 per cent of all transactions. Overall, H1FY23 has demonstrated the strength of the Indian art auction business, demonstrating a steady growth and unrealized potential. With pride, the market has grown in all the correct directions. Modernists have shown to be wise investments since Contemporaries have been on the rise. Along with an influx of riches and a new breed of collectors entering the market, there is a positive attitude. The auction season has gotten off to a strong start in September, and the market has continued to astound everyone. Indian art market clocks $75.8 million in turnover for H1FY23

New Delhi, The Indian ultra-rich allocate 17 per cent of their investable wealth towards luxury items, with maximum preference to watches followed by art and jewellery, according to <keyword id="19895043" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="knight-frank" source="keywords">Knight Frank</keyword>. In a virtual press conference, real estate consultant Knight Frank released 'The Wealth Report 2024', highlighting that 17 per cent of the investable wealth of Indian Ultra-high Net Worth Individuals (<keyword id="20759156" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uhnwi" source="keywords">UHNWI</keyword>) is allocated towards luxury or passion investments. UHNWI are defined as individuals with a net worth of USD 30 million and above. The joy of ownership has been cited in the survey as the prime reason for Indian UHNWIs for making investments into luxury assets, the consultant said. Among Indian UHNWIs, luxury watches are the most coveted investment category, followed by art and jewellery. Classic cars are at 4th position, followed by luxury handbags, wine, rare whisky, furniture, coloured diamonds, and coins. However, on a global scale, the super-rich show their preference for luxury watches and classic cars. <keyword id="19895044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="knight-frank-india" source="keywords">Knight Frank India</keyword> Chairman and Managing Director <keyword id="20404833" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shishir-baijal" source="keywords">Shishir Baijal</keyword> said in a report, "<keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s affluent class has long shown a fondness for collectibles spanning various categories. With both domestic and global markets offering significantly higher returns for such items, India's ultra-wealthy are actively pursuing investment opportunities in areas aligned with their passions." The demand for rare collectibles is on the rise across different age groups in India, he added. "... as wealth continues to grow in the country, we can anticipate further investments in these asset classes," Baijal hoped. According to the annual Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index (KFLII), which tracks the performance of 10 popular investments of passion, art was the best-performing luxury asset class with prices rising 11 per cent in 2023. "Despite witnessing a depreciation of 9 per cent in the last 12-month, over a longer period of 10-year, rare whisky continued to command its premium value registering 280 per cent returns," the report said. Despite the major auction houses observing a year of record-breaking sales in the luxury investment market, the KFLII edged into marginal negative territory for the second time, declining 1 per cent in 2023. This was because several constituents of the index dropped into the red zone or showed minimal gains.

India's super rich put 17% of investable wealth in luxury items says Knight Frank

New Delhi, Mar 8 () Mumbai-based film production company Mukta Arts, which runs multiplex chain under the brand name 'Mukta A2 Cinemas', plans to add around 25 screens by 2021 taking its total count to around 100 screens, according to a top company official. Mukta Arts, founded by Bollywood producer and director Subhash Ghai, is planning to invest around Rs 50 crore in the next two years for expansion of the multiplex chain, primarily targeting the budget segment viewers from tier-II and III cities in the domestic market. Besides, the company, which also has overseas presence and operates six screen in Bahrain, has plans to expand its operation abroad. "We currently have 74 screens across India and abroad. We are looking at cities like Chennai and Bengaluru to expand to 100 screens by the calendar year 2021," said Mukta Arts Managing Director Rahul Puri. Mukta Arts would be investing "over Rs 50 crore to reach our targets within the next two or two and a half years," he said adding that "the company is evaluating various ways to raise the funds required for the expansion". On being asked about the projection for the coming 3-4 years for Mukta A2 Cinemas, Puri said, "We intend to double the number of screens." According to its business strategy, the company would continue to focus on the Bahrain market in the gulf region and expand there. "We have a six-screen multiplex at Manama in Bahrain. We will be making an announcement shortly about expansions in Bahrain. At the moment, Bahrain is an area of focus for us as Dubai is fairly saturated," he added. In the domestic market, Mukta Arts is currently reviewing properties in Bihar and Assam. Mukta A2 Cinemas' turnover at the end of the third quarter of the financial year 2019-20 stood at Rs 65 crore. Currently, Mukta A2 Cinemas gets around 60 per cent revenue from ticket sales, 30 per cent from food and beverages and the remaining 10 per cent from advertisement. Mumbai, Jan 21 () Arts, crafts and learning kits supplier Stone Sapphire will invest around Rs 400 crore by 2022 to expand its distribution base and scale up domestic toy OEMs to tap into the growing toy market, a top official said.
 The Gujarat-based firm, which manufactures and distributes arts, craft and stationery kits for children under the brand 'Skoodle', is also a distribution partner of US toy maker Hasbro in India.
 "The Indian toy market is expected to touch USD 3.3 billion by 2024. Our intention is to bring global toy brands to India at affordable rates. We will be investing around Rs 400 crore by 2022 which will be utilised for strengthening our distribution base here as well as assisting domestic toy OEMs to manufacture global toy brands in India," Red Ridge Global CEO Vick Rana told reporters.
 Stone Sapphire is the Indian arm of Red Ridge Global.
 Red Ridge, with experience in markets in China, Canada, Malaysia and the US, where it is manufacturing and distribution partners for global toy brands, wants to replicate the model in India as well so that Indian kids can get enjoy branded toys at affordable rates, he said.
 "To push the make in India initiative, the government is likely to announce curbs on import of toys. We intend to take this initiative forward by partnering with global toy makers to have their manufacturing base in India. This will not only give kids access to global brands but will also reduce the cost by almost 30 per cent," Rana said.
 The company is also eyeing USD 200 million or Rs 1400 crore revenue from its India operations by 2025. However, the company did not mention its current India revenues, but said the parent company Red Ridge is a USD 500 million firm.
 Stone Sapphire has its own manufacturing facility as well as warehouses in Vadodara and plans to partner with one OEM every month and increase the warehousing capacity to 5 lakh sqft in the near future.
 "We have already invested Rs 100 crore last year to add warehousing space, increasing our distribution network to reach smaller towns as well as to partner with domestic toy makers. We already have 10 manufacturing units and we will add one every month going forward. We invest in technology and equipment to meet the global quality standards," Rana added. PSK MR

A device the company calls Kaalink then separates out the carbon as soot, leaving out other polluting agents like heavy metals and carcinogens. The carbon can then be retrieved from the Kaalink to be mixed with oils and water to make paints, inks, and so on. Just 30-50 minutes of car pollution can generate enough purified carbon to fill an Air Ink pen, <a href="http://www.graviky.com/air-ink.html">Graviky Labs claims</a>.The company, which is based Bengaluru, India, partnered with Tiger Beer to commission street artists to create murals using Air Ink in Hong Kong's Sheung Wan district. This company is turning car exhaust into inks and paints

Near the end of 2013, the animated movie <keyword id="6366669" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mahabharat">Mahabharat</keyword> was released and was touted as “India’s most expensive multi-starrer <keyword id="21778" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="80" keywordseo="animation">animation</keyword> film.” The voice actors included the who’s who of contemporary Indian cinema. Amitabh Bachchan lent his voice to the iconic character of Bhishma; Ajay Devgan was Arjun; Sunny Deol was Bheem and Vidya Balan was Draupadi. None of the actors charged any fee and yet, the movie had a budget of Rs 50 crore. After the first week, it managed to earn just Rs 1.5 crore. 
 
Mahabharat was a phenomenal flop. 
 
But much of it had to do with the low quality animation that people ended up watching on-screen. And the studio blamed for such below-par work was a Juhu-based one called Pen India Pvt Ltd. Surely, there was nothing wrong with the story – Mahabharat is one of the most popular epics in the world. And the voice-acting was top-notch. So the only factors behind the debacle were the quality of animation and marketing. 
 
Outsourcing kills creativity Like many other industries, animation in India earns most of its revenues through outsourced projects from American and European studios. According to a secondary research presented in the <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Nasscom">NASSCOM</keyword> Industry Report, the money earned by Indian animation and VFX studios from global projects has steadily increased over the past decade. 
 
While that is good news from a business standpoint, the increasing number of outsourced projects also means that the animators are constantly working under strict deadlines and their project work is always under remote supervision which hardly leaves any room for creative decision-making. For the global studios, the Indian animation talent is akin to a sweatshop where the designs and plans are already in place and the workers are only expected to execute them. Such an environment not only tramples upon creativity but also leaves little time to pursue one’s creative aspirations. The few animators who choose not to work for those studios often find it difficult to earn a decent living. This is because the domestic market for animation is quite small. In 2009, domestic projects only accounted for 30% of the total revenues the industry earned. The rest came from outsourced animation, gaming and VFX work. 
 
Failure to woo the target audience 
As animated movies are relatively new in India, one of the biggest mistakes happened in figuring out the right content for a particular demographic. If you were to look at some of the animated films that came from India and achieved very little success, you might end up thinking – here’s a country where kids love Hindu mythology. 
 
It might seem odd now but that’s exactly what the producers had in mind when they released movies like Ramayan, Chhota Bheem, Ghatotkach, Krishna, etc. All of these feature stories from Hindu mythology and as India has the largest Hindu population, the producers just assumed that these stories would be popular. What a wrong assumption to make! What they don’t realise is that these stories are already known to Indian kids and they are not getting anything new or original out of these films. However, the Indian film industry is partly to blame for this – originality has never been its strong point. 
 Animation film-makers of India need to learn from studios like <keyword id="161299" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Pixar">Pixar</keyword>, <keyword id="11201" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Dreamworks">DreamWorks</keyword> and Disney who come up with highly original scripts such as <keyword id="241494" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Wall-E">WALL-E</keyword>, Kung-fu Panda, Madagascar, Toy Story, How to Train Your Dragon and more. On the other hand, the Indian audience must change their mindset and start enjoying good animated films. Discarding an animated movie as a ‘cartoon’ film is an indication that most Indian viewers still think that anything animated is meant ‘for the kids.’ If only our people grew up on Japanese Manga and Anime from a very early age… 
 
Training counts Animation can be taught while sketching is a talent that is honed over a longer period of time. So, the first thing wannabe animators need to know is that you need to love art, drawing and sketching. In India, people often choose animation as a career just because it is a booming sector. Five years ago, they might have chosen biotechnology or marine engineering for the same reason. But that’s not the way to go about choosing a career. There are a handful of really good schools in India for learning animation, illustration or design – such as the National Institute of Design (NID), Srishti School of Art and Design, <keyword id="2199190" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="J-J-Institute-of-Applied-Art">J.J.
