As 5G roll-out picks up speed thanks to Reliance Jio and Airtel, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> climbed four spots for median mobile speeds globally in the month of April, from 64th position in March to 60th, a report said on Wednesday. Median mobile download speeds in India increased from 33.30 Mbps in March to 36.35 Mbps in April, according to network intelligence and connectivity insights provider Ookla. Overall, India showed improvement in its global ranking for median fixed broadband speeds, moving from the 84th position in March to the 83rd position in April. The country's performance in fixed median download speeds witnessed a slight increase from 50.71 Mbps in March to 51.12 Mbps in April. Qatar led the chart for global median mobile speeds, whereas Senegal jumped 16 spots in rank globally. For overall global fixed median speeds, Bahrain registered the highest increase in rank, jumping by 14 spots globally, with Singapore sustaining the first spot this month as well. In January, India ranked at 69th position globally in median mobile speeds, while, in February, India ranked at 67th position. Meanwhile, Qualcomm is rolling out 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) in collaboration with Reliance Jio to serve millions of residents in India, the chip-maker's President and CEO Cristiano Amon has said, as the country doubles down on providing 5G services to all by the end of the year. With the roll-out of 5G in India, the global chip-maker had bolstered its efforts with Reliance Jio to help it fast connect 100 million homes through its 5G FWA, including the millimetre wave (mmWave). India sees 4-spot jump in median mobile speeds globally

<keyword id="429606" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-major-Bharti-Airtel">Telecom major Bharti Airtel</keyword> and <keyword id="1119509" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Qualcomm-Technologies">Qualcomm Technologies</keyword>, Inc on Tuesday announced their collaboration for accelerating <keyword id="764355" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G">5G</keyword> in India. Recently, Airtel became India's first telco to demonstrate 5G over a LIVE commercial network in the city of Hyderabad. An Airtel statement said that through its network vendors and device partners, the telecom will utilise the Qualcomm 5G RAN platforms to roll-out virtualised and Open RAN-based 5G networks. "Airtel, as a board member of the O-RAN Alliance, is committed to driving the success of O-RAN and is working with Qualcomm Technologies to explore and implement the O-RAN approach for India," it said. The flexible and scalable architecture of O-RAN will create new opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses to become viable players in the deployment of 5G networks, it added. In addition, Airtel and Qualcomm Technologies will collaborate to enable a wide range of use cases, including 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) that is designed to deliver broadband connectivity at <keyword id="209297" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="gigabit">Gigabit</keyword> speeds to homes and businesses. This collaboration also aims to allow a faster rollout of broadband services in a cost effective and expeditious manner across India for "last mile" connectivity challenges. Airtel to collaborate with Qualcomm for 5G rollout in India

Airtel partners with Intel to accelerate 5G rollout in India

As our earlier report mentioned, Apple has yet to roll out an update for enabling 5G services in its 5G supported devices in India. So, despite having a 5G supported device and living in an area covered by 5G, iPhone users are currently not able to use 5G services. According to a <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/apple-will-roll-out-5g-software-updates-in-india-in-december/94800740">report</a> by Economic Times, this is not going to change anytime soon, and iPhone users may have to wait until December to use 5G. Apple has reportedly informed ET that an update to enable 5G services will be rolled out in December. "We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance are completed. 5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December," Apple said in a statement to ET. This means that iPhone users may have to wait for a long time before they will be able to use 5G services. As the Cupertino giant has said that the updates will “start rolling out to iPhone users in December”, it may take some time before all users receive the update, so, users may have to wait until next year to use 5G on iPhones. This comes when the Indian government has called for a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/news/indian-government-wants-apple-and-samsung-to-quickly-roll-out-the-update-to-enable-5g-support/articleshow/94788906.cms">meeting</a> to discuss a speedy rollout of software updates to enable 5G services. If you have an iPhone, you may not be able to use 5G before December

As <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> prepares for the 5G era, the installed base of smartphones with 5G capabilities crossed 5 crore in the country, a report showed on Friday. The 5G smartphone shipment share reached 29 per cent of overall shipments in the second quarter (Q2), which was the highest ever. "The 5G spectrum auction and commercial availability will accelerate 5G smartphone adoption among users," said research analyst <keyword id="325148" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="shilpi-jain" source="Orion">Shilpi Jain</keyword>. The government has reached new heights in introducing the 5G technology with an auction of over Rs 1.5 lakh crore for 5G spectrum. India's total smartphone installed base crossed 600 million (60 crore) during the April-June quarter as shipments grew 9 per cent (on-year) but fell 5 per cent (on-quarter) to reach almost 37 million units, according to latest research from Counterpoint's Market Monitor service. The annual growth was primarily driven by a lower base in Q2 2021 due to the second Covid-19 wave. The quarterly drop was due to macroeconomic headwinds affecting consumer demand. "Consumers are preferring to repair their device or buy a refurbished one rather than make a new purchase. This trend is more visible in the entry and budget segments. Due to this decline in demand, almost all the brands are facing inventory issues," said senior research analyst <keyword id="9638737" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="prachir-singh" source="Orion">Prachir Singh</keyword>. At the end of June, India's smartphone market was sitting on more than 10 weeks of inventory, more than double the normal inventory size. <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> grew 63 per cent (on-year) in Q2 driven by a smaller base in Q2 2021 due to the Covid second wave. It remained the top-selling brand in the ultra-premium segment. "The opening of its own e-store, <keyword id="6354606" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="iphone" source="Orion">iPhone</keyword> SE 2022 and offers on other models will further drive Apple's shipments in the coming quarters," the report mentioned. The smartphone retail ASP (average selling price) grew 10 per cent driven by an increasing share of the higher price segments. India's overall mobile handset market grew 6 per cent (on-year) but fell 9 per cent on quarterly basis. The feature phone market registered a decline of 17 per cent primarily due to the decline in consumer demand, the report mentioned. Rajaraman, the telecom secretary. “We urge your intervention to instruct TEC to rescind the existing notifications covering all existing consumer electronic products under the MTCTE Certification regime and to desist in pursuing smartwatches, wearables, and smart cameras under Phase III and 5G mobile phones under the proposed Phase V of MTCTE,” COAI said in the letter. The company said in a statement to IANS that it is currently working with operator partners for a seamless roll-out of the 5G experience for users. "We are working closely with our operator partners and are committed to rolling out OTA updates across all our 5G devices by the middle of November 2022, enabling Indian consumers to experience 5G seamlessly," a <keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword> <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> spokesperson told IANS. "Samsung has pioneered 5G technology development since 2009 and took the leading role in standardising 5G technology globally," the company spokesperson added. In India, Samsung has the widest portfolio of 5G devices. The announcement came as the government convened a meeting of handset manufacturers and telecom service providers on Wednesday to ensure a smooth transition towards the new technology. "What I believe is really impressive is the way India has been systematically building the digital ecosystem. Now the most ambitious and the fastest by a big margin 5G rollout in the world, these are our building blocks for the future economic growth in any country and India is really taking a lead in this respect," Lundmark said. He said that India is now the second biggest market for Nokia and the company is exporting 5G base stations from here to other parts of the world. "The next big thing in India will be industrial digitalization, manufacturing industry 4.0 and the opportunity to use this platform that you've been building to attract more and more manufacturing, and also very importantly R&amp;D to the country," Lundmark said. Ericsson, President and CEO, Borje Ekholm said 4G helped build digital companies in the US and China like Facebook, Tencent etc and with rapid 5G rollout India will have the most modern digital infrastructure. "We saw all the big consumer applications developing over the last few years. We have seen them develop in the two countries that built out the first 4G networks in the world. That happened to be the United States and it happened to be China. Almost all jobs in the consumer sector or digitalized in the consumer were created there. "With 5G, we're going to digitize society and those jobs will be created in the country where the digital infrastructure is built first. With the pace India is building out 5G, it will have the most modern digital infrastructure in the world," Ekholm said. Both Ericsson and Nokia pitched for the world to follow a global standard to keep the cost of technology lower otherwise it will hurt economies of scale, digital inclusion of rural masses and the global economy. General Atlantic (India), Managing Director, Sandeep Naik said that India is a top-growing economy and foreign direct investment worth USD 100 billion is estimated to flow in India over the next 10 years. "In terms of private capital entering India, we did around USD 40 billion in 2021, I see that easily going over USD 100 billion in the next five years. I think that is a conservative number in terms of private capital coming into the country. As General Atlantic, we will have a fair share of that market," Naik said. The company has successfully conducted trials of connected drones on its indigenous 5G network. According to Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), India must complete the migration from 2G to 4G to 5G at the earliest and the rollout of 5G should be India's national priority. <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword> has developed a 100 per cent home-grown and comprehensive 5G solution, which is fully Cloud native and digitally managed. "Because of its converged, future-proof architecture, Jio's network could be quickly and seamlessly upgraded from 4G to 5G," according to Ambani. Nokia and <keyword id="15492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vodafone" source="Orion">Vodafone</keyword> Idea have also partnered to trial 5G services using E-band in areas where fibre is challenging to deploy. Vodafone Idea is currently conducting 5G trials in India using the trial spectrum in the 3.3GHz-3.6GHz band and mmWave band (24.25GHz-28.5GHz). Earlier, Vodafone Idea had achieved peak speed of over 3.7 Gbps during its 5G trials in Pune. The DoT had approved applications of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and MTNL for 5G trials. The 5G technology will represent around 39 per cent of mobile subscriptions in India at the end of 2027, estimated at about 500 million subscriptions, says a latest Ericsson report. According to Viswanath Ramaswamy, Vice President, Technology, IBM Technology Sales, IBM India/South Asia, 5G offers enormous potential to advance industries across streaming, communications, advanced robotics and manufacturing. "However given the complexity of telecom networks today, it is clear that the tools, systems and methods need to be orchestrated for the network of tomorrow," he said. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to quickly enable changes in the network that optimise network performance and reliability by applying Machine Learning, helping "Communications services providers (CSPs) deliver on the promise of 5G by providing faster customer experiences," Ramaswamy added. India being a ‘mobile first' country, cellular internet is central to every person's digital lives as they communicate, consume and create content, commerce and connect with the community. "As smartphone users mature, they use devices more and more for creating 4K/8K videos, clicking high-resolution 108MP+ photos, streaming HD content and conducting video conferencing calls. The higher bandwidth and higher capacity technology such as 5G, thus, becomes the cornerstone to enable these advanced experiences," Neil Shah, Vice President, Research, at Counterpoint, told IANS. Several smartphone players have also started testing <keyword id="4400143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g-in-india" source="Orion">5G in India</keyword> and globally. OPPO in November 2021 announced that it has successfully conducted its first VoNR (Voice/Video on New Radio) call from its Hyderabad 5G lab. The 5G VoNR calls were made using the latest Reno6 series smartphone and an end-to-end 5G Standalone (SA) network powered by Keysight test solutions at the Hyderabad 5G Innovation lab of OPPO. OnePlus has announced that the company is investing almost $30 million to scale up 5G research and development labs to take 5G technology to more users worldwide. Technology services major Capgemini has also bolstered its collaboration with Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson to accelerate the deployment of 5G solutions via its 5G lab in Mumbai. The bigger benefit 5G can bring is beyond personal transformation, "Which is enterprise and social transformation with excess capacity, lower latencies and higher throughputs with use-cases such as Private Networks and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) Broadband, bridging the digital divide," Shah added. In India, an affordable 5G for the masses may take a longer time to happen, but the country must take the first step towards it this year, so that it catches up with the world on 5G fast. A significant percentage of companies in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> believe the advent of 5G will herald a transformative era in the world of work, unlocking a wealth of opportunities for India's tech talent pool, says a report. According to the report by staffing company <keyword id="6381892" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="teamlease-services" source="Orion">TeamLease Services</keyword>, over 80 per cent of respondents believe that IT and banking and <keyword id="6354241" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="financial-services" source="Orion">Financial Services</keyword> will benefit from the 5G technology in terms of job creation and upskilling. The report titled "India's 5G rollout: Revolutionising the People Supply Chain" is based on responses of over 247 companies on the impact of 5G on the ecosystem and employment generation. "With substantial investments, such as the PLI scheme allocating Rs 12,000 crore to the telecom sector, with approximately 25 per cent dedicated to creating new jobs, we are poised for a positive outlook on job creation and upskilling," TeamLease Services CEO - Staffing, Kartik <keyword id="6386349" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narayan" source="Orion">Narayan</keyword> said. This will boost confidence to harness the potential of 5G, creating unprecedented job opportunities, driving innovation and shaping a transformative future, he added. The adoption of 5G will have significant impact on industries such as <keyword id="6356925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bfsi" source="Orion">BFSI</keyword> (60 per cent), education (48 per cent), gaming (48 per cent) and retail and e-commerce (46 per cent), the report said. On a year-on-year basis, 46 per cent of participants anticipate job creation ranging from 61 per cent to 80 per cent within the first year of 5G implementation. "Telecommunications companies embracing 5G solutions present a promising growth opportunity. As telcos leverage the potential of 5G in network upgradation, migration, IoT/IIoT, mobility, network infrastructure, and network security, we anticipate increased hiring for specialised roles," Narayan said. This advancement creates new opportunities and drives demand for roles such as technical content writers, networking engineers, AI/ML professionals, UX designers, cloud computing engineers, cybersecurity specialists, data science and analytical experts and more, he added. The report, however, noted that the telecom industry is facing a considerable demand-supply gap of 28 per cent, which emphasises the urgent need for comprehensive upskilling and reskilling initiatives. Encouragingly, 88 per cent of employees expressed a preference for upskilling, indicating a strong desire to enhance their existing skill sets, the report said. Additionally, 11.2 per cent of employees showed a preference for reskilling, presenting significant opportunities in the job market for fresh talent, it added. The report also highlighted the impact of 5G on job creation over the next few years, with 41 per cent of respondents expecting an impact of more than 80 per cent on job creation over the next three years of 5G rollout. According to Narayan the impending 5G rollout is expected to lead to an 80 per cent increase in tech-related jobs. 5G adoption to unlock wealth of opportunities for India's tech talent pool: TeamLease

New Delhi, <keyword id="9912774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g-smartphone-shipments" source="Orion">5G smartphone shipments</keyword> in India crossed 10 crore (100 million) in the month of May, creating a record as 5G roll-out continues to happens at a very fast pace in the country. According to data shared by market intelligence firm CyberMedia Research (CMR) to IANS, Since its initial introduction, 5G smartphone shipments have grown more than 28 times. "In May, 5G shipments accounted for 48% of the smartphone market, with Samsung leading the 5G market, closely followed by OnePlus and Vivo. Collectively, these three brands captured a combined 5G market share of 60 per cent," Shipra Sinha, analyst, Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, told IANS. As 5G roll-out now reaches most of the regions in India, The 5G smartphone market is expected to expand by more than 70 per cent (on-year) by the end of this year. The India smartphone market recorded more than 13 times growth in its 5G shipments from the year of its initial introduction in 2020. In CY2022, close to 100 <keyword id="3900349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g-smartphones" source="Orion">5G smartphones</keyword> were launched in the India market. The key for mass 5G adoption in India will depend, among others, on the introduction of 5G smartphones in the affordable smartphone segment (less than Rs 10,000), according to an earlier CMR study. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel begun rolling out their 5G networks from October 2022, and have covered most parts in the country.
