Startup India, Standup India: Here’s everything the Modi government is already doing for startups in India

With a government that has already done a lot to sensitise people about the importance of technology and encouraged the creation of startups, hopes are running high as Indians wait for Modi to unveil his action plan for the startup community at ‘Startup India- Standup India’ event on January 16. 
 
The start up fund in the budget, Digital India initiatives and creation of a number of technology warehouses in many cities are a step in the right direction for the creation of an ecosystem. 
 
According to R Murugesh, Group CEO, WNS Global Services &amp; Chairman, <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasscom">NASSCOM</keyword> BPM Council, these are early days and already start up projects are being positively impacted through incubators, angel networks and <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> funding. “This will encourage youngsters to create technology enabled startups which can transform India,” he says. However, Murugesh feels in order for India to become another start up hub, following measures must be the center of focus: 
 
1) Create 3-4 startup / tech islands across Indian regions where there is free flow of capital and talent from across the world with easy visas and no taxes. International talent (high tech and marketing talent) should find it easy to do work in India in these islands and repatriate earnings without taxes. 
 
2) No taxes on start-ups for 5-7 years to enable them to focus on their business first and pay taxes when they actually have some earnings. 
 
3) State government should provide fitted warehouses as well as free world class office accommodation inside SEZs to encourage startups to set up inside that state. They can charge rentals later and must focus more on quality projects as opposed to rental income. 
 
4) World class residential accommodation, schools and hospitals to be made available inside SEZs by state governments to encourage the best talent to shift to these locations and work with these startups.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent clarion call for becoming ‘Vocal for Local’, has brought about a wave of enthusiasm to adopt local brands. And things are changing slowly. The ban on Chinese apps have further also given rise to numerous Indian players coming into the picture and wooing consumers with their innovative, differentiated offerings. So when we talk about the image of India as a brand, it is safe to say that it is ever-evolving. However, in our attempt to dive a little deeper and decode what Brand India stands for today, we caught up with some experts from the industry. They helped define Brand India for us, told us how it has evolved over the years and told where we stand in the global scheme of things, while also giving us a pitch for Brand India. <div type="image" title="Ambi" msid="77526854" hostid="261"></div> Ambi Parameswaran, Founder, Brand-Building.com Brand India has traversed a vast terrain in the last 74 years. From the days when the Western world gave us a few years to come apart at the seams, to becoming a basket case, economically, today we are the world’s largest functioning democracy. We have our problems and have not achieved a China-like miraculous rejuvenation, but we are not a country going out looking for aid. Brand India has emerged into a brand that stands for a number of things in the minds of the global citizens. On the one hand it is seen as the originator of Meditation, Yoga and nature-based cures. On the other end, we are seen as world leaders in Information Technology services. Our hospitality industry is widely recognized as among the best in the world. But there are pieces missing in all this. We are a poor country. While millions have been pulled out of severe poverty, almost 25% of Indian households live below the poverty line. Is GDP a good enough measure or should we look at a different measure? While arguments may rage over that question, we cannot have a large percentage of our population going hungry, without education, without healthcare, without a proper roof over their heads. So there is a lot of work to be done. Brand India, which was once set to become a global disappointment, is no longer in that corner. The world is wanting Brand India to come out shining. It is up to us to rise to this challenge and become a kind, spiritual, democratic world economic power. But over the years we have not come to mean one thing or a few things to people around the world. Yes of course mystics, spirituality, yoga, elephants, cows, ancient civilisation, world’s largest democracy and land of diversity all seem to stay with us. But as a country we need to mean much more. I remember in the old days we always associated ruggedness and quality with German products. We associated quality with British and American products and so on. When Japan first made an entry into the world market, we associated them with cheaper products. I bought my first National Panasonic two-in-one because it was cheaper than the rest. Some people told me it would work fine but wouldn’t last very long. I was OK with that. But it didn’t take them long to overcome that reputation. Most Japanese products I have bought last me longer than anything else. I know people who finally sell their Toyota Corolla after a good 10 years because they are almost disgusted that it won’t stop. Or the famous triad London-Paris-New York became the epitome of fashion. When China entered the world economy, they were in the same situation as Japan in the 70s. Cheap products. But again, China overcame that long ago. I look at my Apple charger in my MacBook Pro and see that it says it is produced in China. And I wonder why I still can’t fit an Indian 3 pin plug into my wall socket without holding it up with matchsticks or some other packing. I wish we made plugs that would fit perfectly. Again, China is just the world’s supply hub for everything. And they can make batteries but they can make Boeings as well. In this context I would like India to mean something. I know that we are known for software but I am disappointed that we are known to be the cheaper software engineers around the world (code coolies) who are capable of working long hours. I also often wonder why the software that Indian engineers are producing is making the developing countries more developed. Why is that technology not available in India? India needs to be a value-added manufacturer of goods and services in the world economy. It’s not the samething as being an exporter. An exporter rarely dominates the world market. We have the chance to be the world’s supply hub. We have an advantage of being democratic, trustworthy and honest. But let us please leave our pride of jugaad behind. As India enters into its 74th year as a free nation, it’s interesting to look at how we’re perceived by the world and where we clearly need to get to.As far as perceptions go, while we’ve dusted off the colonial legacy of maharajah’s and elephants, we’re still steeped into tradition, and seen as a nation that takes two steps back for every step forward. While nations younger than us have moved ahead and given their citizens a better livelihood, we still find ourselves battling age old disputes, debating reservations, struggling to get basics right – education and healthcare for all; clean drinking water and functional infrastructure. A word-cloud of business related attributes on India would have terms like | poor infrastructure | dysfunctional legal system | unresponsive bureaucracy | corrupt policy makers | archaic labour laws |in short a difficult environment for business. On the positive side, India remains the world’s most vibrant – if sometimes floundering – democracy, with diversity that would make most continents seem homogeneous, in comparison. It’s vast and growing middle class and dramatic growth of the internet and digital services, offers a world of opportunity that Jio platforms cleverly used to woo global tech majors and some of the world’s premier funds. Then of course, we have the shining stars that still make India so alluring – Yoga, Bollywood; world class management talent; tech and software geeks running the world’s back end; an emerging hub for startups; a deep culture of service and the ability to get the impossible done surmounting the odds. From a state of food shortage, to one of disease and death (a very high rate of infant mortality included), a very low level of literacy and a very deep degree of poverty, Brand India has traversed many, many miles. And yes, there are ‘miles to go before we sleep’ for sure! India today is a robust brand in the roster of nations. Our second largest population number makes us a market for many from every nation. Additionally, higher prosperity indices make for a robust domestic consumption market itself. A strong government at the centre, a host of very positive reforms that relate to health and education in particular will lead us to the dreams that India aspires for. It is clear that India does not lack for positive policy initiatives. If at all there is a lack and lag, it is in the implementation. As India evolves, we need to tackle the key issue of jobs for all. And that is the only red flag for now in our brand progress. Brand India today represents numbers for a start. The 1.3 billion plus population number is a number no nation can ignore. The important aspect of Brand India is the fact that we are a vibrant and strong democracy. A democracy that fought for its freedom, went through early tumult of a nation in the making, and has emerged over the years as a strong force to contend with. A strong democratic force. The diversity of India is its other appeal. A diversity woven into a seamless unity under the nation and its positive governance structure. Yes there are differences and noises of dissent and fight of every kind, and that is indeed the true nature of India. Each and every voice of dissent is a positive voice that seeks the same goal: a strong, mature and prosperous India. That indeed is the beauty I see in the political dissent we witness today. No one is right and no one is wrong right now. Time, debate and dissent will cobble together the future for this great land of ours. Largeness in emotions Largeness in meaning Largeness in faith Largeness in consumption Largeness in giving Largeness in living There is good and bad in the largeness - it denotes excesses, history (largeness in time), population, loudness among others. But that unique combination makes it larger than the sum of its parts. India is greater than the sum of its parts.

K Madhavan named President of The Walt Disney Company India and Star India

<ul><li>B Com, MBA and B Pharm graduates are found to be most employable, according to the Wheebox <keyword id="6224961" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india-skills-report" source="Orion">India Skills Report</keyword> 2023 report. </li><li>In 2023, most of the hiring is likely to happen in automotive, engineering and internet businesses. </li><li>Percentage of the employable women workforce increased to 52.8%, compared to 47.2% for men.</li></ul>The employability of Indians has gone up in the last one year according to The Wheebox India Skills Report. As per its evaluation, half of the candidates – at 50.3% were found to be employable as compared to the 46.2% last year. This report is a result of the evaluation of 3.75 lakh candidates or freshers who took the Wheebox National Employability Test (WNET) across India and the participation of 150 corporations from over 15 different industries in the Early Career Edition of the India Hiring Intent Survey. Piyush Nangru, co-founder and COO, Sunstone said the gap between skills that graduates have and industry-required skills continues to persist. “There is an urgent need across the country for multiple stakeholders to remedy the industry and higher education gap,” he said. Amongst the domains, B Com, MBA and B Pharm graduates are found to be most employable. Whereas, Polytechnic and MCA graduates were the least employable. “Improving employability through higher education remains a challenge and can be attributed to many factors.The post-Covid era further requires realignment of the higher education curriculum, up-skilling practices, and training techniques,” Nangru said. Among cities, Mumbai has the highest overall employment percentage of candidates, followed by Lucknow and Mangalore. Increased participation of women at work will give industries an edge with key roles already being occupied by women as we go into 2023,” the report said. Currently, the share of women in India’s workforce at 33% — is much less than that of males at 67%. Whereas, in countries like South America, Asia, and Africa, women account for 36% of the workforce. According to a <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/technology/telegram-being-investigated-in-india-over-extortion-gambling-concerns-article-12806508.html">report</a> by Moneycontrol, Telegram is being investigated by the government over its alleged misuse in criminal activities such as gambling and extortion. The ongoing investigation could also end up with Telegram being banned in India as per a government official. "The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) and MeitY have been looking into P2P communications on Telegram," said a government official to Moneycontrol. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="112798622" title="Upcoming IPOs to look out for this week – Premier Energies, ECO Mobility and more" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> According to the report, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is investigating criminal activities such as extortion and gambling on the platform. <h2>Why has Telegram come under the scanner now?</h2>While Telegram has been blamed for such activities in the past, the investigation might have gained steam as the UGC-NET exam paper was reportedly being sold on Telegram for ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 after being leaked. Durov, 39, was detained by the French authorities at the Bourget Airport. Durov was wanted under a French arrest warrant due to the lack of moderation on Telegram, which allegedly led to the platform being used for money laundering, drug trafficking and sharing pedophilic content. The arrest was criticised by several people, including Tesla cofounder Elon Musk. Telegram comes under the scanner in India for extortion and gambling – will it be banned in India?

2015 was a landmark year for <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> in India. The world stood up and took notice of the amazing startup ecosystem here with investments for over<a href="http://yourstory.com/2015/12/indian-startups-raise-9billion-2015/"> 1000 startups valued at $9 billion</a>.The spotlight was on how startups would be the pillars of India's economy and give a much needed impetus to India's growth by providing employment to millions.

	<keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword>: As I watched the entire startup community descend at Vigyan Bhawan to flag off the Startup India initiative, it was heartening to see the government recognise entrepreneurs as a driving force of modern change. Many new taxation and regulatory changes were promised and we eagerly wait to see how well they are implemented. TRAI's recent ruling on Free Basics is one of the first steps to ensure that any startup can leverage a free and open Internet to disrupt the status quo. Government needs to increase their focus on connecting millions through an open Internet and nip in the bud restrictive practices introduced by corporates only then would an initiative like Startup India be successful. Internet can give a voice to the unheard and to the new, and I hope government supports the startup ecosystem by aggressively ensuring that an unrestricted Internet is within everyone's reach.

	<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>: I was blown away by the fact that the government had attracted investments worth $222 billion towards the Make In India initiative. Strengthening manufacturing is one of the core priorities and given India’s growing potential to be one of the top economic powerhouses in the world, I have no doubt that we can definitely achieve this. Focusing on quality STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Medicine) education and supplementing blue collar workers with modern manufacturing skills is the 1st step towards this. In order to achieve economies of scale, automation is a crucial step and we need to note how it impacts millions of jobs.

	Where Startup India will meet Make In India: "Coding is the new ABC" and must be taught in schools and colleges. Make In India will only be successful if we view technology as a tool for massive, positive societal change. Think about it-Google disrupted libraries, Amazon disrupted shopping malls, Uber disrupted public transportation, and<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mobikwik"> MobiKwik</a> is disrupting cash. In order to see startups make in india the government needs to encourage more hardware startups by the means of doing away with certain import duties.

	If India is to give birth to many Silicon Valleys and encourage indigenous manufacturing then we need to start thinking on the lines of 3D Printing, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and the like. It will propel us towards living up the ‘Make in India’ vision.

	On the Wallet Sector: Internally at <keyword id="143842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobikwik">MobiKwik</keyword> we have a saying that "MobiKwik exists so that cash does not". According to a recent report until 2015 over 200 million still remain unbanked in India and <a href="http://www.livemint.com/Industry/v4zrym0BCjNvXg3qcUD30K/Indias-unbanked-population-halves-to-233-million.html">even the remaining don’t have 100% access to all the banking services</a>. The propagation and rapid adoption of mobile wallets is a step in addressing this gap. Government needs to start right at the grassroots-level and allow tax rebates to retailers in order to increase wallet usage. <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/technology/tech-news-technology/indias-e-commerce-revenue-may-touch-38-bn-in-2016-assocham/">Cash-on-delivery still accounts for over 45 percent of e-commerce orders</a> since people are apprehensive or don’t have means to make online payments. Government needs to relax its banking norms so that mobile wallet companies can function better than banks and offer financially inclusive services to millions more.

Speaking at the 'Aero India' show here, the Minister said: "We have taken many steps to strengthen our security apparatus recently. Domestic manufacturing of bigger and complex <keyword id="32723" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence">defence</keyword> platforms has now become the focus of our policy under the <keyword id="9215149" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="atmanirbhar">Atmanirbhar</keyword> <keyword id="2592711" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-abhiyan">Bharat Abhiyan</keyword>. We plan to spend 130 billion dollars on military modernisation." To achieve the twin goals of self-reliance and exports, he said, a target has been set to achieve a turnover of Rs 1,75,000 crore, including exports worth Rs 35,000 crore in aerospace and defence goods and services by 2024. He pointed out that India holds the potential to become a reliable supplier of defence equipment to many friendly nations. "We have a strong and diversified Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises sector, having more than 5,000 active units," the Minister said. Talking about 'Aero India', he said that India today offers a <keyword id="9602850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="unique-opportunity">unique opportunity</keyword> in defence and aerospace manufacturing. "This opportunity comes as a 'sangam' or confluence of rising demand, greater innovation, conducive policies and maturing ecosystem in defence and aerospace manufacturing sector," he said. The Minister said that in aviation sector, the air show and aviation exhibition is one of the brightest galaxies which offers a wide variety of options, solutions, partnerships and, most importantly, opportunities. Singh expressed gratitude to the Defence Ministers of Maldives, Ukraine, Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Comoros and Madagascar, who were present on the occasion, and others who joined in virtually. About 540 exhibitors, including 80 foreign companies, defence ministers and delegates, services chiefs and officials from more than 55 nations are participating in the event. "It reflects the growing optimism of the global community," he said. In order to maximise the reach and participation, the event was planned in a hybrid format with a concurrent virtual exhibition that will integrate seminars, B2B interactions and others. He said that 2020 was a challenging year for the entire world and saw adverse impact on the lives and livelihood of the people as well as industrial growth and economy of many countries. The Minister said that despite the constraints caused by the global coronavirus pandemic, large participation was witnessed in this year's air show. Singh also pointed that the existing supply chains, developed by aerospace and engineering firms, an investor-friendly government, with simplified procedures and fast-track business approvals through single-window mechanism combine to make Karnataka a very attractive destination for the industry. The core group of secretaries on disinvestment— all finance ministry secretaries, corporate affairs secretary and law secretary— is likely to meet today (October 28) and discuss the proposed stake sale in Air India by the Indian government. It will be the group's second meeting this month. The Narendra Modi government is striving to sell Air India to a private player after failing to find a bidder in its previous term. Recently, the cabinet approved new process for strategic disinvestment making possible stakeholder consultation before inviting bids. So far, the strategic disinvestment process didn't allow for stakeholder consultation before the government issued EOI. Today's meeting could move towards the next step of Expression of Interest (EoI) draft of Air India, sources told IANS. Air India's total debt stands at around ₹58,000 crore and cumulative loss, ₹70,000 crore. In the financial year ending March 31, 2019, the airline is estimated to have reported a loss of ₹7,600 crore. At the earlier meeting, the group of top bureaucrats cleared strategic sale in Bharat Petroleum Corporation of India (BPCL), Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), BEML and Container Corporation of India, and also discussed the EoIs for Air India. Stake sales in two power PSUs —THDC India and Neepco — were also approved. These two PSUs could be taken over by state-run NTPC.
