<ul class="summary-list"><li>Boris Johnson's unpopularity in Scotland is driving voters to back <keyword id="1418386" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Scottish-independence">Scottish independence</keyword>, according to new polling on the prospect of a new referendum.</li><li>A large majority of swing voters said Boris Johnson being the leader of their country was a persuasive argument for independence.</li><li>Boris Johnson has refused to grant Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's first minister, an independence referendum.</li><li>But the prime minister may find it increasingly difficult to deny the Scottish government an independence referendum if support for independence continues to increase.</li></ul>Boris Johnson's unpopularity in Scotland is pushing swing voters to back Scottish independence, according to fresh polling on the prospect of a new referendum which paints a grim picture for unionists.A <a href="https://www.jlpartners.co.uk/polling-results">survey of Scottish voters</a> carried out by polling firm JL Partners found that the most persuasive argument for independence among swing voters and undecided voters was: "Boris Johnson is not the leader I want to have for my country."A total of 79% of those voters agreed with that statement, meaning it was more persuasive than other popular arguments for independence. Those included the prospect of a closer relationship with the EU, with which 74% of swing voters agreed, and finally ending the debate over independence, a sentiment with which 65% agreed.<div type="image" title="image002" height="195" width="1270" msid="78953162" hostid="261"></div>The survey of 1,016 voters was carried out in September, and it was <a href="https://www.politico.eu/article/loathing-of-boris-johnson-fueling-surge-in-support-for-scottish-independence-poll/">first reported by Politico</a>. It also reflected what appears to be growing support for independence for Scotland, recording 56% support for independence, with 44% opposed.Other recent polls have also indicated a majority support for independence. An Ipsos MORI poll in published earlier in October, for example, <a href="https://www.ipsos.com/ipsos-mori/en-uk/record-public-support-scottish-independence">found 58% of voters in favour of independence, with 42% opposed.</a>The survey could fuel concerns in Downing Street that Boris Johnson's personal lack of popularity north of the border could be driving support for independence to higher levels.A net total of 80% of respondents said that Boris Johnson was doing badly as prime minister, compared to 18% who said he was doing well. By contrast, a net total of 73% of voters said Nicola Sturgeon was doing well as Scotland's first minister, compared to 25% who said she was doing badly.The prime minister has consistently refused to entertain the prospect of a fresh independence referendum, telling a reporter earlier this year that the poll held in 2014 — in which voters rejected independence — was a "by common consent a once-in a-generation event."Nonetheless, Johnson may find it increasingly difficult to deny Nicola Sturgeon an independence referendum if support for independence continues to increase.Sturgeon's Scottish National Party also appears poised to win a majority in the Scottish parliament elections next year, with the party enjoying <a href="https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2020/08/12/scottish-independence-yes-leads-53-47">a comfortable lead in the polls</a>, which will increase pressure on Downing Street to grant the country a fresh referendum.The UK government appears to have become worried about the increasing support for Scottish independence. <ul><li>The non-executive directors or <keyword id="6373267" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Independent-Directors">independent directors</keyword> will now have to go through an online assessment exam to be hired on company boards. </li><li>The assessment exam will be based on corporate literacy including <keyword id="7821650" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-company-law">Indian company law</keyword>, ethics, and capital market norms. </li><li>Experienced directors will not be required to take the test, but will need to register on a government portal.</li></ul>Independent directors will soon have to pass a test before they are hired onto the board of directors of a company. According to the Corporate Affairs Secretary, Injeti Srinivas these non-executive directors will be tested by an online assessment exam that the ministry will design. Testing Corporate Literacy These assessment exams will test the corporate literacy of ‘budding’ independent directors. The questions on the exam will cover the basics of Indian Company Law, ethics, and capital market norms, corporate government standards among others. Aspiring directors will be able to take as many attempts as possible to pass these tests within a limited period of time. “This is a step in the right direction. Anything which potentially improves the quality of independent directors thereby improving the quality of governance is welcome.Government is trying to ensure that Independent directors are qualified to add value that companies today are looking from them,” said Ankit Bansal, CEO and Founder of Sapphire Human Solutions, an executive Search firm. This move will result in many ‘active’ independent directors, experts say. “The independent directors are hired for a fixed time period, which can be extended with mutual consent. Several companies hire via executive search firms or market networks. However, the online test will focus on producing independent directors who are active corporate employees and possess relevant knowledge and experience to serve the industry,” Agamjeet Dang, Managing Partner of Executive Access told Business Insider. According to Dang, the demand for independent directors is expected to rise in the coming years. And, the government will also make it easy for companies to access talent and vice versa. However, experienced directors — who are furnished with the unique Director Identification Number (DIN) — need not go through the test. They can register on a government database. This will bridge the gap between hiring companies and aspiring independent directors. Active directors As the incidence of corporate fraud is rising, the government is increasing scrutiny on the internal workings of boards. In the current system, the remuneration committee of a company tends to choose independent directors after a member proposes a name. Now, the government wants to vet these directors beforehand. Independent directors are expected to bring in diverse experience and knowledge to the decisions taken by the board of directors of a company. In many cases, family owned businesses in India tend to bring in their own relatives, friends or acquaintances on board who tend to sway the votes in favour of them. And, that has led to many indiscrepancies in companies which are passed, without objection from the board. “This will promote appointment of directors on merit rather than network or connections. Government is trying to ensure that Independent directors are qualified to add value that companies today are looking from them. "In this decade we have to speed up the drive to bring talent, technology and professionalism into sports in the country." Drawing the nation's attention to the Olympians present in the audience, the Prime Minister said, "The athletes who have made us proud at the Tokyo Olympics are here among us today. He also highlighted the achievements of Indian women athletes when he announced that Sainik Schools, for the first time in their history, will be opened up for girls. "It is a matter of pride that India's daughters are performing splendidly, be it in Board exams or the Olympics," the PM declared. Emphasising the importance of sports in the school curriculum, he said: "There was a time when sports were not considered to be a part of the mainstream. Parents used to say to children that they would spoil their life if they kept playing. But today, awareness about the importance of sports and fitness is widespread all over the country. We have experienced it in the Olympics this time." As many as 240 Olympians, including gold medallist Neeraj Chopra and silver medallist Mirabai Chanu, the men's and women's hockey teams, their support staff, and officials of the Sports Authority of India were present to listen to the Prime MInister. On his way out of the Red Fort, the Prime Minister's cavalcade stopped at the enclosure reserved for the Olympians and he walked around waving at them. In view of the Covid protocols, the sportspersons remained seated. The athletes surely were excited and shared pictures from the Red Fort on social media platforms as well. PM Narendra Modi applauds Indian contingent at 2020 Tokyo Olympics in his Independence Day speech

As India gears up to celebrate its 74th <keyword id="28240" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Independence-day">Independence Day</keyword>, microblogging website <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> on Friday has unveiled a specially designed emoji to honour the Indian Armed Forces, which is a vibrant depiction of the National War Memorial. The design of the emoji represents the innermost structure of the Memorial, called the 'Amar Chakra' or the 'Circle of Immortality'. The emoji will be live until 18th August and will be available in English and several Indic languages, such as Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, Kannada, Punjabi, Marathi, Malayalam, Bengali, Telugu, Gujarati, and Oriya. "We hope this emoji will not only add to the Independence Day celebrations but will also encourage Indians across the world to learn more about and pay respects to the lives of India's brave soldiers," Mahima Kaul, Director, Public Policy, India and South Asia, Twitter said in a statement. <keyword id="749437" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter-India">Twitter India</keyword> is also supporting the Ministry of Defence's special initiative #SaluteTheSoldier that pays respects to the lives of Indian soldiers. The Ministry on its part has launched a dedicated Twitter account for the National War Memorial (@salute2soldier). Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be launching the emoji on the eve of Independence Day. Twitter celebrates India's 74th Independence Day with a new emoji

A little over 100 years ago, India had released its first film. It was a silent Marathi movie titled ‘Shree Pundalik’ that was screened at Coronation Cinematograph in Mumbai (then known as Bombay) on May 18, 1912. 
 
Thereafter, India produced a number of silent movies on a gamut of issues and finally, we had our first sound movie ‘Alam Ara’. 
 
With growing production of movies in different Indian languages, India also saw the advent of its own movie theatres. Theatres started coming up in 1930s, prior to which movies were screened in studios and in tents! 
 But in pre-independent India, movie theatres were called ‘talkies’ and were considered a big thing. Even British used to throng these talkies to entertain themselves. Yes, we even screened English movies. The <keyword id="6365313" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="East-India-Company">East India Company</keyword> has also, for the fact, produced Indian movies. 
 
So, on the eve of 69th Independence Day, we bring you stories of theatres from four metropolitan cities born in the pre-independent era.

#IndependenceDaySpecial: Let’s take a look at India’s cinematic heritage

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=india">India</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/India-wants-friendly-relations-with-Pakistan-Rajnath-Singh/articleshow/47911348.cms">Pakistan’s</a> relationship has gone through more high and lows than the helpless rupee. Most often than not, the relationship follows this pattern- one minute, we’re bickering about our border feuds, the next minute, we’re admiring each other’s spirit but the moment someone mentions- Kashmir, everything suddenly goes haywire. 
 It's been over sixty years, but the exact status of the bond between these two countries is still unknown, just like the status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Just kidding. Jammu and Kashmir belongs to <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, obviously. 
 
But all said and done, it would be a colossal mistake to not acknowledge that over the years, our closest neighbour/blame-game player has been a source of great help and never-ending guffaws. 
 Thus, in celebration of <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword>’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Independence-Day-special-7-Movies-based-on-Indias-independence-movement/articleshow/48480987.cms">Independence Day</a>, Business Insider draws up a list of five reasons why Indians should be making a ‘thank-you card’ for Pakistan. 
 
1. World-class cricket rivalry: Without Pakistan, would the world cup or cricket matches ever be the same? I shudder to think of the boring matches’ women who can’t differentiate a ‘wide’ from a ‘no-ball’ would have to endure. An India- Pakistan match has the power to unite families and induce patriotism like nothing else. Moreover, the rivalry between both these cricket teams put the rivalry between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to shame. Winning a match against Pakistan is of greater significance than discovering the cure for a deadly disease or just about anything else. That’s right. And, let’s not to forget, the easy retweets that can be garnered by cracking Shahid Afridi and Inzamam-ul-Haq jokes. We might not like to admit it, but Indians need you, Pakistan. 
 
2. Fawad Khan: Fawad Afzal Khan, better known as the only reason women all across India endured Khoobsurat, a two-hour long snoozefest masquerading as a movie. I’m not exaggerating when I say that Fawad Khan is Pakistan’s national treasure. His chiseled face, perfectly sculpted body has us swooning and watching Khoobsurat on repeat, at the cost of damaging our brain. Don’t think it’s possible to thank you enough for his existence, Pakistan. 
 
3. Pakistan army gives the Indian army a much needed practice: When our neighbour is in one of their no-so-friendly moods, it results in a couple of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Pakistan-resorts-to-ceasefire-violation-shell-mortar-bombs-in-Poonch/articleshow/48449239.cms">infiltration bids</a> and the sacred LoC being violated. As a result, the Pakistan army unknowingly motivates the Indian army to stay on their feet by providing much-needed net practice. Additionally, it also keeps them prepared for any plausible serious confrontations with other nuclear states. (China, we’re looking at you) 
 
4. Helping Bollywood directors with movie plots: Bollywood Directors just like Bollywood lyricists would have been ‘inspired’ by works of others while figuring out plots for movies had it not been for the partition and the subsequent creation of Pakistan. If you’re one of those who loves Gadar, 1947, A Love Story, Veer Zara and the recent <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Bajrangi-Bhaijaan-the-highest-grosser-of-2015/articleshow/48145585.cms">Bajrangi Bhaijaan</a>, you have to no one to thank, but thy neighbor. Thank you Pakistan for providing our directors with the perfect storylines for <keyword id="28240" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Independence-day">Independence Day</keyword> special films since 1947. 
 
5. Chand Nawab: Nawazuddin Siddiqui might have kept us laughing with his antics as Chand Nawab in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, but he undoubtedly failed at overshadowing the original Chand Nawab on whom the character was based. Chand Nawab, a Pakistani journalist with Indus News had to face many hurdles while recording his PTC in a crowded railway station. The video of his attempts to get his PTC right while having to dodge people who would walk in front of the camera went viral and made us fall in love with this man, who has become our new favourite. All due to Pakistan, guys! 
 
Special mention- If there’s one thing that India has gotten horribly wrong while Pakistan has hit the bull’s eye, it is Coke Studio. With their version, Pakistan showed us what a music programme should ideally be about.
