The taxpayers and tax professionals made their compliances in time, leading to a surge in the filing of Income-tax Returns (<keyword id="20458564" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITRs" source="keywords">ITRs</keyword>), which resulted in a new record of ITRs filed till <keyword id="22468495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="July-31" source="keywords">July 31</keyword>, 2024. July 31 was the last due date for filing the <keyword id="19948101" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="income-tax-returns" source="keywords">income tax returns</keyword>, without having to pay any penalties. The total number of ITRs for assessment year 2024-25 filed till July 31, 2024 is more than 7.28 crore, which is 7.5% more than the total ITRs for assessment 2023-24 (6.77 crore) filed, a <keyword id="19908390" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Finance" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ministry of Finance" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Ministry of Finance">Ministry of Finance</keyword> release stated on Friday. An increasing number of taxpayers have opted for the <keyword id="19935168" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-Tax-Regime" source="keywords">new tax regime</keyword> this year, the <keyword id="19900485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance-ministry" source="keywords">finance ministry</keyword> said. Out of the total ITRs of 7.28 crore that have been filed, 5.27 crore have been filed in the new tax regime, as compared to 2.01 crore filed in the old tax regime. Thus, about 72% of taxpayers have opted for the new tax regime, while the rest 28% continue to be in the old tax regime. The filing of ITRs peaked on July 31, 2024 (due date for salaried taxpayers and other non-tax audit cases) with over 69.92 lakh ITRs being filed on a single day. The <keyword id="20404575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-filing-portal" source="keywords">e-filing portal</keyword> also observed its highest per hour rate of 5.07 lakh of ITR filing between 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on July 31. A total of 58.57 lakh ITRs from first time filers were reported, a fair indication of widening of tax base. "A lot of emphasis was provided to educate taxpayers about old and new tax regimes. FAQs and educational videos on the same were designed and uploaded on the e-filing portal," the ministry said. Focused outreach campaigns were carried out on social media to encourage the taxpayers to file their ITRs early. Along with this, unique creative campaigns were also carried out on different platforms. Informational videos in 12 vernacular languages, apart from English and Hindi, were displayed on digital platforms. The ministry said it is encouraging to note that over 6.21 crore ITRs have been e-verified, out of which more than 5.81 crore are through Aadhaar-based OTP (93.56% ). Of the e-verified ITRs, more than 2.69 crore ITRs for the 2024-2025 have been processed (43.34%) till July 31, 2024. Note that e-verification is the final step in filing your ITR. If you do not e-verify your ITR within 30 days of filing it, your ITR will stand invalid. The e-filing Helpdesk team has handled approximately 10.64 lakh queries from taxpayers during the year up to July 31, supporting the taxpayers proactively during the peak filing period. Taxpayers are also requested to verify their unverified ITRs if any, within 30 days of filing the ITR. Taxpayers are urged, who for any reason, missed filing their ITR within the due date, to complete their filing expeditiously.

And before you ask, the <keyword id="19903456" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-department" source="keywords">Income Tax Department</keyword> has not come out with any notification informing the taxpayers of a deadline extension. That is why you should not delay filing your <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/personal-finance/article/heres-your-ready-reckoner-for-itr-filing/articleshow/111402608.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">income tax returns</a> anymore! The <keyword id="20171597" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-department" source="keywords">IT department</keyword> noted that as of July 26th, 2024, over 5 crore ITRs had already been filed, marking an 8.5% increase from the number of ITRs filed during this period, last year. The IT department, in an X post, highlighted that last year, it had reached the 5-crore <keyword id="22083160" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ITR-filing-deadline" source="keywords">ITR filing deadline</keyword> on July 27th. However, this year, it had breached the milestone a day earlier, i.e., on July 26th, 2024. Earlier, the All Gujarat Federation of Tax Consultants and Income Tax Bar Association had requested a deadline extension for AY 2024–25 from July 31st, 2024, to August 31st, 2024, citing issues and glitches in the tax filing portal. However, there has been no response from the finance ministry on the same. <h2>What happens if I don't file my ITR until July 31st? </h2>For AY 2024–25, you can file a <keyword id="6380232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="belated-ITR" source="Orion">belated ITR</keyword> until December 31st, 2024. But remember, it comes with many disadvantages as well. Here's a snapshot of all the benefits you will have to forego: <h2>What are the penalties for late filing of ITR? </h2>1. You will have to pay a penalty of Rs. 1,000 if your total annual taxable income is below Rs 5,00,000. But if your taxable income exceeds this threshold, you will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000. 2. Even if you have to file a <keyword id="17933087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIL-ITR" source="Orion">nil ITR</keyword>, you must do so before July 31st. This is because if you do not end up filing it on time, you will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000. 3. According to Section 234A of the <keyword id="19936187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-act" source="keywords">Income Tax Act</keyword>, you will also have to pay interest on your outstanding tax amount at the rate of 1% per month, starting from the due date, i.e., July 31st. <h2>No carry forward of losses, old tax regime</h2>1. You will not be able to carry forward any losses, including those from your mutual funds or stock investments, business income, and other sources. You will only be allowed to carry forward your losses from house properties. This could significantly raise your total tax liability and lead to you incurring hefty losses. 2. After July 31st, 2024, you will not be able to opt for the old tax regime for tax calculation purposes. Starting August 1, the new tax regime, which offers significantly fewer deductions and exemptions as compared to the old regime, will be considered default for you. ITR Filing: Today is the last day to file your income tax returns, so file today to avoid penalties

<keyword id="20190045" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Industry-body" source="keywords">Industry body</keyword> <keyword id="21568150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SME-Chamber-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="SME Chamber of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="SME Chamber of India">SME Chamber of India</keyword> has urged <keyword id="19956758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Minister" source="keywords">Finance Minister</keyword> <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> to continue the 45-day <keyword id="21233021" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="MSME-payment-rule" source="keywords">MSME payment rule</keyword> for <keyword id="20008810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="corporates" source="keywords">corporates</keyword> and other buyers. According to Section 43B(h) of the <keyword id="19936187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Income-Tax-Act" source="keywords">Income Tax Act</keyword>, introduced through the <keyword id="19955404" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance" source="keywords">Finance</keyword> Act 2023, if a larger company does not pay an MSME on time -- within 45 days in case of written agreements -- it cannot deduct that expense from its taxable income, leading to potentially higher taxes. The government in last year's Budget added a new clause under Section 43B of the Income Tax Act to address the challenge of delayed payments faced by MSMEs in the country. "We are pursuing not to change the 45-day MSME payment rules imposed by the Department under the pressure of corporates or multinational companies to save the life span of the MSME sector. Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act reinforces the importance of timely payments by mandating that companies settle payments to MSME vendors within 45 days to qualify for deductions," SME Chamber said in a statement addressed to Sitharaman. The industry body argued that this provision serves as a powerful incentive for companies to adhere to payment timelines, thereby supporting the financial health of MSMEs. "Many MSMEs are NPA victims of corporates, who are buying from them and not dealing through the TReDs platform. Most of the corporates and multinational companies are forcefully insisting to deregister from the Udyam Portal and insisting not to deal through the TReDs platform," SME Chamber stated. The industry body also urged the finance minister to consider providing Rs 5 crore loans under the "Differential Rate of Interest" scheme for micro and <keyword id="20569966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="small-enterprises" source="keywords">small enterprises</keyword>. It suggested changing the NPA definition from 90 days to 180 days for the MSME sector. The chamber also sought the setting up of a task force to review various issues, hurdles, grievances and difficulties faced by MSMEs for availing credit facilities and the lack of approach by the financial institutions towards enhancement of credit flow to the MSME sector.

While modifications in tax and taxability of income from insurance policies (other than ULIPs) are among the most notable changes that have drawn a lot of attention, there are a couple of lesser known changes one should be aware of when filing one’s taxes. We take a look at these changes. The first is about disclosing income from virtual digital assets (VDAs) such as cryptocurrencies. “The taxpayer must disclose income from VDAs such as cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and so on in the "schedule VDA" provided in the ITR form,” says Aashish Sharma, co- founder and litigation head, Lex N Tax, a tax consultancy firm. Schedule VDA requires information such as the acquisition date, transfer date, category of income for taxation, acquisition cost in the case of a gift, and consideration received. “Those who get VDA income are not eligible to file ITR-1 or ITR-4. Such income can instead be declared in ITR 2 or ITR 3. Further, income from VDAs can be taxed either under the head of business income or capital gains,” says Sharma. Budget 2022 had introduced new NFT (non fungible token) and VDA regulations. The transfer of such assets will be subject to an income tax rate of 30% plus a surcharge and a levy beginning April 1, 2022, as per recent regulations. “TDS will be deducted at 1% of the sale price beginning July 1, 2022. This tax will be deducted by the developer, intermediary, broker or donor. Taxpayers must provide the necessary information regarding their donations in the relevant 'Schedule 80G' within the ITR form in order to claim the deduction. “All approved u/s 80G charitable institutions, NGOs, and research universities must submit Form 10BD for all donations received during the fiscal year. They must also provide form 10BE to the recipients,” says Dasari. Form 10BE, containing a unique registration number, will be issued to benefactors after form 10BD has been filed by the institution. It is essential to enter donation details accurately in the appropriate table while filing the ITR. There is a new column under Table D for disclosing the donation reference number (ARN) for donations made to eligible entities where a 50% deduction is allowed, subject to the qualifying limit. The ARN, obtained from the form 10BE donation certificate issued by the institutions who received the donation, must be included in the ITR. This has been implemented to match donor and donee records and reduce the prevalence of fraudulent donations claims.

Form 26AS is a consolidated tax statement that provides details of various tax-related transactions, including TDS. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Discrepancy in tax deducted and TDS credit">Discrepancy in tax deducted and TDS credit</cmsannotation> In some cases, the amount of tax deducted, and the TDS credit displayed in Form 26AS may not match the actual amount. “This discrepancy can occur due to various reasons, such as the deductor failing to provide TDS details to the Income-tax Department, or deducting taxes using an incorrect Permanent Account Number. “Taxpayers are advised to verify the tax credit displayed in Form 26AS, and reconcile any differences, if present,” says Aashish Sharma, co- founder, and litigation head, Lex N Tax, a tax consultancy firm. Sometimes, the TDS may not have been deducted by the employer. “Generally, the employers provide the tax computation to the employees for their approval. The employees may raise any concerns regarding non-deduction of TDS to their employers in case no such TDS is deducted,” says Suresh Surana, Founder, RSM India, an audit, tax and consulting services provider. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Steps to view form 26AS">Steps to view form 26AS</cmsannotation> To check if your employer has deducted TDS, follow these steps. First, register on the Income Tax Department's portal by visiting their website, and completing the registration process. Once registered, log in to the e-Filing portal using your credentials. Look for the "View Form 26AS (Tax Credit)" option, which can be found under the e-file section. Confirm the disclaimer, and proceed by selecting the relevant tick box. Next, choose the assessment year for which you want to view Form 26AS. Remember that the assessment year usually corresponds to the financial year. Finally, you'll have two viewing options: downloading the Form 26AS statement as a PDF, or viewing it directly on the portal in HTML format. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="What to do in case of a discrepancy">What to do in case of a discrepancy</cmsannotation> “If you find that TDS has not been deducted by your employer, or if there are discrepancies in the TDS details, you should take the following steps,” says Sharma. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Contact your employer:">Contact your employer: </cmsannotation>Reach out to your employer, and discuss the issue. Provide them with the necessary details, and supporting documents to rectify the situation. They should rectify the TDS deductions in their records, and provide you with updated Form 16. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="File an online complaint:">File an online complaint:</cmsannotation> If your employer does not take appropriate action, or if you face difficulty in resolving the issue, you can file an online complaint with the Income Tax Department through their e-Filing portal. Look for the "File Grievance" or "File Complaint" option, and provide the required information. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Follow up with the IT Department:">Follow up with the IT Department: </cmsannotation>After filing the complaint, regularly check the status of your complaint on the e-Filing portal. The Income Tax Department will investigate the matter and take necessary action to rectify the TDS discrepancy.
