<ul class="summary-list"><li>High prices helped Trump get elected. Economists say his proposals could also be inflationary.</li><li>Lower taxes, new tariffs, and deportations are seen by some as driving inflation and higher rates.</li></ul>A key sticking point for the 73,479,065 Americans (and counting) who voted for President-elect Donald Trump <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-trump-won-election-high-prices-cost-of-living-unemployment-2024-11">was inflation</a>.Many people tired of high prices on everything from cars to gas to eggs and milk ended up voting with their wallets. Some of the states that saw the biggest swings towards Trump were ones where real <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-trump-won-election-high-prices-cost-of-living-unemployment-2024-11">wages had declined</a>, giving people less spending power to fend off rising prices.However, if Trump follows through with his campaign promises, some economists say it is likely that his second term will result in the type of inflation increase that helped him secure the White House.While the extent to which the new regime is inflationary depends on how many proposals actually get executed, a consensus is building that the more heavy-handed versions of Trump's agenda would lead to higher prices.It's a notion the Trump camp has pushed back against. In August, on the campaign trail, the president-elect said his proposals would not influence US prices are swore to push them lower.In the week leading up to the election, Taylor Rogers — a Republican National Committee spokesperson — <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-expensive-goods-price-impact-presidential-election-scenarios-trump-harris-2024-10">told BI in a statement</a> that, if elected, Trump would "once again cut taxes and unleash American energy to lower prices on groceries and other goods."<h2 id="192b47c8-9f61-4858-a383-70b2e3a515cc">Inflationary promises</h2>The main Trump proposals viewed as inflationary are: sweeping tariffs on imports, mass deportation of immigrants, and lower taxes.Trump has proposed a universal tariff of as much as 20% and as high as 60% for goods from China.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-trump-won-election-high-prices-cost-of-living-unemployment-2024-11">According to the US Census Bureau</a> broad tariffs would impact the price of automobiles, drugs, food and beverages, furniture, and household appliances, and an <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" class="" href="https://taxpolicycenter.org/taxvox/tpc-trump-tariffs-would-raise-household-taxes-and-slow-imports">analysis</a> by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center said that Trump's tariff proposals would decrease post-tax incomes by an average of $1,800 in 2025.Tariffs are paid for by the companies importing goods into the country, rather than by the companies exporting their products to the US.Typically, US companies simply pass the tariff costs to consumers via higher prices, and company executives <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trumps-tariffs-threats-world-ceos-thoughts-trade-2024-11">are already signaling this to investors.</a>"If we get tariffs, we will pass those tariff costs back to the consumer," Philip Daniele, CEO of AutoZone, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariffs-higher-inflation-fed-interest-rates-taxes-mortgage-rates-2024-11">said on a pre-election earnings call.</a>"We're set to raise prices," Timothy Boyle, CEO of the retailer Columbia Sportswear, told the Washington Post about potential tariffs in October. "It's going to be very, very difficult to keep products affordable for Americans," he added.Trump's promise to deport of millions of immigrants <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/immigration-jobs-economic-impact-inflation-job-market-wages-paul-krugman-2024-7">is also seen as likely to boost inflation by shocking the labor market,</a> especially in the sectors with large immigrant workforces like construction and agriculture.A shortage of labor in these areas of the economy is expected to force companies to raise wages to attract new workers, which could then in turn raise prices to make up for the higher cost.The CEO of the National Association of Homebuilders<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-deportation-immigration-policy-election-housing-home-prices-construction-costs-2024-10"> told Business Insider</a> before the election that mass deportations would ultimately lead to higher home prices and a slower pace of building."It's pretty clear to me, all else being equal, you reduce the labor supply very abruptly, and you're going to get an increase in inflation because of an increase in prices," economist Wendy Edelberg <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-mass-deportation-immigraiton-plan-federal-reserve-inflation-2024-9">told Business Insider in September.</a> "That's relatively straightforward."Finally, lower tax rates are typically viewed as stimulative for the economy and could unleash a wave of spending on goods and services by both consumers and businesses, with prices rising in the face of higher demand.<h2 id="ad348b73-8929-4bf9-b3cc-6702834bdfdc">Possible inflation fallout</h2>If Trump delivers on all of these proposals, then a rebound in inflation is all but guaranteed, economists have said."We're talking about an inflationary shock that is bigger than almost anything else that you could do through federal policy," <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://wwnorton.com/books/9780393333138">left-leaning</a> Nobel laureate <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-harris-economy-outlook-inflation-job-market-election-paul-krugman-2024-10">Paul Krugman said</a> of the tariff plan.A new bout of inflation would put the Federal Reserve on notice to start hiking interest rates again, which would further strain consumers via higher borrowing costs.The bond market is already signaling this. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/surging-treasury-yields-after-trump-win-show-borrowers-may-not-get-relief-2024-11">Yields have surged since Trump's election victory</a> and market-based inflation expectations have jumped to the highest level since April, as measured by the five-year breakeven inflation rate."It reflects legitimate worries about the path of government spending and what that could mean for inflation," Ned Davis Research economist Veneta Dimitrova said in a note on Friday."With the economy already operating slightly above potential, additional government stimulus at this stage of the business cycle will likely be inflationary," Dimitrova added.It's worth noting that the tariffs Trump enacted in his first term did not result in a significant inflation increase. The difference this time around — and the reason inflation forecasts are more stark — is how much deeper and more wide-reaching Trump's tariff proposals are for not just China but also the rest of the world.

Economists say Trump could give Americans the very thing they voted against

Soon after former President Donald Trump selected <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-vice-president-jd-vance-career-facts-2024-7">Sen. JD Vance</a> to be his running mate in July, the Ohio senator's 2021 comment about "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-defended-his-childless-cat-ladies-comment-2024-7">childless cat ladies</a>" recirculated and set off a social-media firestorm. America, he said, was being run by "a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives" and who "want to make the rest of the country miserable, too."Women were quick to respond: Jennifer Aniston, who has talked openly about having fertility struggles, pushed back on social media. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-endorses-kamala-harris-2024-8">Taylor Swift flipped the language on its head</a>, signing off her endorsement of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-gen-z-2024-election-obama-2008-young-voters-2024-8">Vice President Kamala Harris</a> with "Childless Cat Lady" beside a photo of Swift and her cat, Benjamin Button. Meghan McCain, a daughter of the late Sen. John McCain, said in a social-media post that the comment displayed an "insensitivity and cruelty to women." But Vance's crass comment, he later said, was driven less by a concern about women's personal lifestyle choices than by an anxiety about the growing influence that single women wield in American society. On that front, he's not wrong: In just a few years, single women have become a largely united voting bloc, casting votes overwhelmingly for Democrats.Part of the shift is demographic: Over the past few decades, the number of single women in America has skyrocketed. In 2023, there were 43 million single women living in the US, a 55% increase since 2000. An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/06/28/a-record-high-share-of-40-year-olds-in-the-us-have-never-been-married/">analysis last year from the Pew Research Center</a> found that one-quarter of all 40-year-olds in 2021 had never been married, up from just 6% in 1980. Single women are older, more educated, and more financially independent than they were a generation earlier. And they are motivated to vote. In 2000, 48% of single women <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://cawp.rutgers.edu/facts/voters/gender-differences-voter-turnout#NPGC">reported voting</a>. In 2020, that jumped to a record 61%. According to the political data firm Catalist, single women now make up one-quarter of the electorate. (Single men, on the other hand, make up 19%).But demographics don't explain why this voting bloc has become so critical to Democrats' success. In a 2023 Pew survey, more than seven in 10 single women identified as a Democrat or leaned Democratic, compared with 45% of married women. In 2020, single women accounted for nearly one-third of Joe Biden voters. When Harris took over the ticket, her support among single women swelled. In June, before she became the Democratic nominee, less than half of single women in a YouGov poll reported having a favorable impression of her. By September, that jumped to nearly two-thirds. And her support is growing: A recent Ipsos survey found Harris leading among single women voters by nearly 40 points.Conservatives have started to recognize the growing problem for their party. When 2022 exit polls found that unmarried women overwhelmingly backed Democrats, the Fox News personality <a target="_blank" href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/women-marry-settle-down-stop-005849281.html">Jesse Watters said</a>: "Single women and voters under 40 have been captured by Democrats. So we need these ladies to get married." On the other side of the coin, Democrats are taking advantage of their newfound momentum, seeking to cultivate support among single women by more vigorously advocating for women's issues and abortion rights. The 2024 election is poised to further entrench a growing political gender divide.When the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade</a> in 2022, it shattered the uneasy status quo of abortion politics. The Dobbs decision put Republicans firmly on the defensive, mobilized pro-choice voters, and transformed the political landscape. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-vote-abortion-top-issue-2024-biden-trump-guide">Abortion became a call to action</a> for many women, especially single women. Shortly before the 2022 midterm elections, 54% of single women in a poll my team at the Survey Center on American Life conducted said abortion was a critical priority.In a 2020 Gallup survey, 21% of single women said they could not support a candidate who did not share their views on abortion; this year, that jumped to 35%. The General Social Survey has found that Americans across the board have become more supportive of access to abortion in any circumstance, but the shift among single women has been especially dramatic. In its 2022 survey, two-thirds of single women said that abortion should be available for any reason, a view held by less than half of single women a decade earlier. While men have also become more supportive of abortion, they haven't shifted nearly as much as single women.It's no coincidence that the Harris campaign is emphatic in its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harris-trump-abortion-presidential-debate-women-reproductive-rights-2024-9">support for abortion and reproductive rights</a>, most recently proposing the elimination of the filibuster to pass federal legislation legalizing abortion. Unlike Biden, Harris has approached the issue <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-trump-biden-abortion-rights-roe-arizona-ruling-2024-4">more directly and unapologetically</a>. To underscore the political power of single women, Trump — after previously <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-abortion-views-biden-arizona-2024-election-2024-4">refusing to answer the question</a> — recently said that if elected, he would veto a national abortion ban.Earlier this year, I wrote about the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-gender-gap-young-men-women-dont-agree-politics-2024-1">growing political divide between young men and women</a> and how the gap began to form in the wake of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/me-too-movement-founder-tarana-burke-says-it-needs-a-narrative-shift-2019-4">#MeToo movement</a>. As celebrities, whistleblowers, and regular women felt emboldened to speak out about their sexual mistreatment, women gained a sense of solidarity with each other. A 28-year-old woman <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2022/09/29/more-than-twice-as-many-americans-support-than-oppose-the-metoo-movement/">interviewed by the Pew Research Center</a> in 2022 about her support for #MeToo said: "I feel it's good for people to know they aren't alone and there are a lot of people out there that have gone through the same things they may have."The cultivation of shared experiences, especially online, helps explain why so many unmarried women believe that what happens to other women in the US has a direct bearing on their own lives, a phenomenon referred to as "linked fate." In a 2022 Survey Center on American Life study, 63% of single women said that in all ways or in most ways, what happens to other women in the US affects their own lives.This newfound alliance has thrived even as gender inequality and sexual misconduct have persisted. A 2020 Pew Research Center study found a dramatic uptick in the number of incidents of sexual harassment on social media young women reported. More than one in three young women reported being stalked, called a derogatory name, or threatened. In a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/from-swiping-to-sexting-the-enduring-gender-divide-in-american-dating-and-relationships/">2023 study</a> my team conducted, four in 10 single women said they had received unsolicited sexual images. In the wake of #MeToo, more women have reported feeling afraid of becoming a victim of sexual assault, a fear that is felt more acutely among unmarried women. In a 2023 Gallup survey, nearly four in 10 single women reported that they frequently worried about being sexually assaulted or raped. Only 16% of married women said the same.These fears gain more weight considering that being single is no longer a temporary stage for many women — it's a permanent lifestyle for many. With the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/death-of-typical-american-nuclear-family-economic-crisis-marriage-divorce-2024-3">average age of first marriages</a> continuing to climb, even women who end up married or in long-term partnerships now spend more time living and working on their own. Issues such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-expensive-cities-for-childcare-daycare-us-affordable-care-cost-2023-5">childcare</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pay-gap-by-state-how-much-women-and-men-earn-2024-3">wage gaps</a>, and protections for women become even more important when you're building a life without a partner.More than anything, what defines the politics of single women is the growing unease they feel about women's place in American society. For most of the past two decades, women felt largely content with their treatment in the US. That all changed after Trump's election and the #MeToo movement. Less than half of women in a 2021 Gallup survey said they felt satisfied about the way women were treated in American society, a historical low. Single women were the least satisfied.The combined feelings of connectedness and discontent have critical political implications. The belief that women across America face similar struggles fosters a sense of solidarity that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/21565503.2021.1908371">research</a> has found can spur political engagement.In one way, the Democrats got lucky with Harris. Even though single women typically support Democrats, they were not overly enthusiastic about Biden's candidacy. But poll after poll has found that single women have become strongly supportive of Harris.While she has downplayed the historic nature of her candidacy, the possibility of electing the first female president is important to single women voters, which could explain the surge in support for Harris. In a new poll by my team at the Survey Center on American Life, 60% of single women voters said the election of a female president was "very important." Far fewer married women voters, 43%, shared this view. But even if Harris has been circumspect about the issue of gender, her campaign has engaged in extensive outreach to women's groups, such as Win With Black Women, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and She the People. She also recently appeared <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/podcaster-new-politics-power-broker-harris-and-trump-know-it-2024-10">on the hit podcast "Call Her Daddy,"</a> which is extremely popular among Gen Z women.Harris can do something that Biden never could: convince Americans that she represents a break from the past. Biden, an 81-year-old white guy who has been in politics for half a century, was always going to have a difficult time making the case that he's an agent of change — especially among single women. Even if Harris has not diverged much from Biden on the issues, voters are more likely to believe she represents change. And for single women who increasingly believe the status quo is intolerable, the promise of a new direction voiced by a candidate who says she understands their struggles is a critical part of her appeal.For now, Republicans seem more intent on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-targets-young-men-theo-von-logan-paul-adin-ross-2024-8">appealing to young men</a> than to single women. The Trump campaign recently ran ads in key swing states criticizing Gov. Tim Walz, Harris' running mate, for raising taxes on Zyn, a tobacco-free nicotine pouch popular with young men. Another ad featured Jake Paul, a YouTuber who has a large following of young men, criticizing Harris. In a close election, every group of voters is important, but if Harris maintains her lead among single women, it could provide her with a critical path to victory.<a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/daniel-cox">Daniel Cox</a> is director of the Survey Center on American Life and research fellow in polling and public opinion at the American Enterprise Institute.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Trump and Biden are set for a rematch this fall, and the stakes couldn't be higher.</li><li>Yet some voters are likely to sit out the election for a variety of reasons.</li></ul>President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-trump-november-election-abortion-israel-gaza-swing-states-2024-5">set for a rematch</a> this November — and most Americans aren't happy about it.An April survey from the Pew Research Center found that 49% of voters <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2024/04/24/in-tight-presidential-race-voters-are-broadly-critical-of-both-biden-and-trump/">would replace both candidates</a> if they could. Poll after poll has shown that the race is essentially tied at the national level.The stakes of the election couldn't be higher. Voters face a choice between a continuation of the status quo — and perhaps a more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/democratic-agenda-2025-control-house-senate-president-2024-4">aggressive slate of progressive reforms</a>, if Democrats regain control of both chambers of Congress — and a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-would-donald-trump-do-second-term">radically different vision for America</a> that could bring mass deportations and fewer restraints on executive power. Some believe that American democracy itself is at stake.Yet plenty of voters are likely to choose neither candidate in November, either casting protest votes for third-party candidates or staying out home altogether.<h2 id="a07bb1f7-fde3-4a49-8474-a9716bcc12ee">Voter apathy and non-voting are very common</h2>We've never had an election where voter turnout is 100%.In the last six elections since 2000, between one-third to one-half of eligible voters have failed to cast ballots, either because they chose not to do so, forgot to do so, or were prevented from doing so for some other reason.It's difficult to make generalizations around why some Americans don't vote, but there are some broad theories that could apply. One theory posited by the 2017 book <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=4f394eacbfa6a234c7b4def099ea9558a42e2aa7a3cb1a3309e9275038e53e7c&amp;postID=6661bc7eb38735ca9de38bd7&amp;postSlug=why-people-wont-vote-trump-biden-rematch&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FAmerican-Nonvoter-Lyn-Ragsdale%2Fdp%2F0190670711">"The American Nonvoter"</a> is that a sense of uncertainty, especially driven by a national crisis such as a pandemic, plays a key role in motivating less engaged people to vote.This year's election presents a scenario that's relatively rare: Both Biden and Trump have been president, they have both been fairly unpopular, and everyone knows who they are.More importantly, almost every voter — aside from the most recent immigrants — has a sense of what life in America is like when one or the other is in office.While a Trump versus Biden presidency has massive implications writ large, some Americans may not feel especially impacted in their day-to-day lives by who sits in the Oval Office.<h2 id="aa363235-11b5-42f2-af33-3b5611110ecc">Some are intentionally sitting out over the war in Gaza</h2>Aside from pre-existing reasons of voter apathy, some voters are intentionally planning to stay home out of protest.The single biggest driver of such protests this year are left-wing voters who would otherwise support President Joe Biden but wish to protest his support for Israel's war in Gaza, which has killed over 35,0000 people and led to dire humanitarian conditions.In the Democratic presidential primaries this year, hundreds of thousands of voters have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uncommitted-democrats-biden-gaza-israel-trump-blame-michigan-2024-3">cast "uncommitted" ballots</a> to signal their displeasure.Depending on whether a cease-fire agreement is reached before the election, those voters could sit out November, at least at the presidential level. And more radical groups like "Abandon Biden" are already pushing for voters to do that, regardless of what happens between now and then.These voters, many of whom are Arab or Muslim Americans, say that they know what a Trump victory would mean for them. The former president has long made Muslims a scapegoat for his brand of politics, and he has vaguely pledged to expand upon the so-called "Muslim ban" that he enacted when he was president.Yet they're preparing to stay home anyway, arguing — in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uncommitted-democrats-biden-gaza-israel-trump-blame-michigan-2024-3">words of Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud</a> — that "a genocide outweighs all of this."

The Trump-Biden rematch has incredibly high stakes. Here's why some Americans might not vote anyway.

Back in 2015, when Donald Trump first descended from his golden escalator in New York City, Alexis García was attending high school in the Texas border town of Rio Grande City. In those days, it seemed, everyone in his classes hated Trump. The town of 15,000 serves as the seat of rural Starr County, which is 97% Latino and has voted for the Democratic candidate in every presidential election for the past 100 years. García was too young to vote in 2016, but he supported Bernie Sanders. That year, Hillary Clinton destroyed Trump in Starr, winning 79% of the vote.But after Trump took office, García began to find himself drawn to Trump's bombast. He liked the nicknames Trump came up with for his opponents — they reminded him of his own nickname, Pelón, meaning baldy for his buzzed hair. "Trump is like a schoolyard bully," García tells me, meaning it as a compliment. By the end of 2017, as a high-school senior, he'd become a full-fledged Trump supporter.At first, seeing how his classmates went after other Trump fans, García chose to keep his political conversion to himself. "Tienes nopal en la frente," his friends would tell Trump supporters — you've got a cactus on your face. The meaning of the insult was clear: You're only Mexican on the outside. When García finally told people he liked Trump, he was denounced as a racist. "How can you do this to your own kind?" people would ask."Coming out as a Republican was probably worse than coming out as an LGBT person," says García, who works at a local supermarket. "They would shame you for it."<div type="image" title="Alexis García" height="1500" width="2000" msid="113985767" hostid="261" sizebytes="137552"></div>At the time, García felt like he was part of a minority in South Texas. MAGA was a sort of counterculture among Latinos, a tiny band of provocateurs who enjoyed pissing off the dominant Democrats. But beneath the surface, a seismic shift was underway. When the results were counted on election night in November 2020, García was as shocked as everyone else to discover that Republican turnout in Starr County had nearly quadrupled from 2016. Joe Biden still won, but barely — 52% to Trump's 47%. Trump had gained more ground in Starr than in any other county in America.Since then, political analysts have been questioning whether Democrats are losing their long-standing advantage among Latino voters. How had a candidate who once called Mexicans "rapists" done so well in a Mexican American county? In July, before Biden exited the race, polls found his support among Latinos had fallen below 50%. And even since Kamala Harris won the nomination, polling has indicated she's likely to win no more than 58% of Latino voters — a far cry from what Democrats used to muster. That's especially significant this year because Trump doesn't need to win a majority of Latino support to retake the White House. If he can peel off enough of the 36 million Latino voters, especially in hotly contested swing states such as Arizona and Nevada, it could prove to be the margin of victory.<div type="image" title="An empty street in Roma, Texas" height="1500" width="2000" msid="113985769" hostid="261" sizebytes="294998"></div>In late July, after Biden dropped out of the race, I traveled to Starr County to see why this longtime Democratic stronghold has been shifting steadily to the right. To be sure, Starr differs from other border towns in some significant ways, especially in its relative dearth of recent migrants. But the county underscores how being Latino is becoming less predictive of how someone will vote. The area is working class, and its politics are similar to much of rural America. There's a reverence for law enforcement and the military, a sense of economic instability, and a nagging suspicion that liberal elites in Hollywood and on Wall Street think of locals as ignorant hicks. In Trump, they see a man who offers something different. "People tell me they're going to vote for him," García says. "Trump is going to win."On a humid July morning, Benito Treviño, 77, is walking along the dirt road of his ranch, nestled among the thickets of Tamaulipan thornscrub that grow north of Rio Grande City. Reaching up, he grabs a bean pod from one of the large mesquite trees. "We can grind these into flour with a hammer mill we built," says Treviño, a biochemist and botanist by training who now runs a native-plant nursery. Like the mesquite and huisache that thrive in this arid climate, he has deep roots in Starr County.Treviño traces his family's ancestry back to the earliest Spanish colonists, who made their homes on thin ranches along the Rio Grande. When the US annexed half of Mexico in 1848, those Mexican ranchers suddenly became American. Instead of them moving to America, America moved to them. Today, many South Texans like Treviño see themselves as more Tejano than Mexican American.This explains, in part, why Biden's campaign struggled to get traction among many Starr residents. His 2020 playbook for Latinos was built around celebrating immigrants and affording them a sense of belonging — one of his slogans was "Todos con Biden." But many here don't identify as immigrants. Treviño was born in 1947 and grew up helping his parents work the lands his family had been on for generations. He's American.Like almost everyone in his generation, Treviño was raised as a Democrat, he says, for one simple reason: There were no Republicans in Starr County. "I never heard the word 'Republican' growing up," he says. "There was no Republican Party here." For more than a century, Democrats enjoyed complete control of local government, often running unopposed in general elections. That dominance, at its worst, led to graft and corruption as powerful families passed down elected offices like heirlooms. When Treviño's father spoke out against the local leadership in Starr, the Democratic bosses found a way to show their displeasure: Treviño claims that when officials decided to improve a dirt road that ran through the county, they left the stretch in front of the Treviño home unpaved.<div type="image" title="Benito and Toni Treviño" height="1500" width="2000" msid="113985772" hostid="261" sizebytes="326624"></div>The machine politics compelled Treviño to turn away from the Democrats. He was also prodded by his wife, Toni, a chemist turned lawyer who moved to Starr from Houston. As an outsider and self-identified libertarian, she was shocked by the county's rampant cronyism. "Why are you a Democrat?" she asked her husband. "You're a hard worker. You're very conservative in your values." The Treviños became Republicans, and today Toni serves as the chair of the Starr County GOP.While the worst instances of machine politics were eradicated by the 1980s, many old-timers like Treviño remain deeply suspicious of the Democratic Party. In South Texas counties where Democrats have controlled local politics for generations, Republicans can offer themselves as the party of something new. And polls indicate the same shift taking place across the country: Latinos are much more likely to see Trump, rather than Harris, as the candidate offering a chance at major change.If any place embodies the dual identity among Latinos in Starr County, it's the Rancho Cafe in the tiny town of Roma. On the outside, the restaurant has the wooden facade of an Old Western saloon, complete with a covered wagon in the dirt parking lot. Inside, however, it's classic Tex-Mex. Traditional Mexican dresses hang for sale along the walls of the café, and the servers greet you in Spanish.<div type="image" title="Rancho Cafe" height="1500" width="2000" msid="113985757" hostid="261" sizebytes="276360"></div>At lunchtime, Aliriam Perez sits sipping a bowl of caldo. Both her parents are from Miguel de Alemán, a Mexican city across the border that would blend in seamlessly with Roma if it weren't for the heavily patrolled river separating them. Perez grew up mostly on the US side, though she crossed over frequently to spend time with family. Her mother was adamant that Perez never lose touch with her culture — she didn't want her daughter to become "pocha," Americanized. Though Perez at times rebelled against her mother's wishes, at 34 she's come to appreciate the importance of her Mexican heritage. Now that she has two boys of her own, she's raising them bilingual. "It's part of their history," she says. "It's where they come from."Growing up, Perez wasn't very political. But that changed when she married a local police officer. In 2020, during the Black Lives Matter protests that followed the murder of George Floyd, Perez was deeply offended by the way Democrats supported calls to "abolish the police." It felt like an affront to her husband, who was "out there putting himself in danger," she says. Breaking with her mother, who believes that it's crucial for Mexican Americans to vote against Trump, Perez began volunteering with the local Republican Party. As she sees it, a vote for "law and order" Trump is a way to both honor and protect her husband and other first responders. Democrats maintain a significant advantage among Latinos like Perez's mother, first-generation immigrants who speak Spanish as their first language. But that advantage weakens among the second and third generations — not because American-born Latinos like Perez are more distant from their heritage but because they've started to prioritize other issues in the voting booth. The top two concerns among Latinos this year are the same as those for their fellow Americans: the economy and healthcare. In one recent poll, only 9% of Latino voters cited immigration as their top priority.Starr's economy is propped up not only by law enforcement, including the Border Patrol, but also by the oil and gas industry. During García's childhood, he recalls, his immigrant father would make the long drive out to the Permian Basin in West Texas, where he worked as pipe fitter. Oil production has grown under Biden, and Harris says she has no plans to ban fracking. But to García, it's obvious that Republicans are far more keen to expand drilling. Voting for Trump, as he sees it, is his best bet to keep his dad employed.To be sure, "oil worker" is not a big part of Latino identity in swing states like Arizona and Nevada. Democrats, in fact, have long played to Latino voters by emphasizing the discrimination they face in the energy industry and law enforcement. But that appeal is beginning to lose its appeal. Perez says she knows racism exists in America — a white worker in an Alabama Dairy Queen once refused to serve her because she's Mexican. But she doesn't see discrimination as the province of any one political party. "There are Democrats who are racist and there are Republicans who are racist," she says. Latinos still tell pollsters they consider the Democratic Party more welcoming to them than Republicans. But there are signs the political cohesion of "Latinidad" is beginning to fracture. Across the country, Latino Republicans say they feel more able to wear their politics on their sleeve. When people give them a hard time about voting for Trump, they've adopted a proud and defiant comeback. "¿Y qué?" they reply — "So what?"In his home on his ranch along the northern edge of Starr County, Rick Guerra keeps one room as a sort of museum of his time in the Army: his vest from his days as a tank gunner during the invasion of Iraq, his boots from his deployment in Afghanistan. On one wall, there's a collection of medals and challenge coins. As a teenager, Guerra helped his father and brothers build this very house. After he retired from the Army, he moved in with his wife and two children.<div type="image" title="Rick Guerra" height="2667" width="2000" msid="113985775" hostid="261" sizebytes="288906"></div>Leaning conservative since he was a kid, Guerra became a dedicated Republican during his time in the Army — and he'd like to see America return to the days of George W. Bush, when the military was flush with cash. Like many Latino-majority counties in Texas, Starr sends a higher percentage of its young men and women to the military than the rest of the country. Most families have at least one veteran in their family tree, and that has contributed to the fiercely pro-military tenor of the local political culture.There's another dynamic at play on Guerra's ranch: This is rural America, where Democrats have been hemorrhaging support for over two decades. Today, the political gulf between urban and rural areas is a greater divide than the split between North and South. While three-quarters of rural Americans are white, huge swaths of rural counties in Texas and other states are majority Latino. As a result, millions of Latinos are beginning to experience what demographers call "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/10/20/midterms-rural-urban-divide-resentment/">rural resentment</a>" — like other MAGA supporters, they feel disrespected by politicians and the media on the urban coasts. And efforts by Democrats to counter such perceptions, like passing the Inflation Reduction Act to create energy jobs in rural areas, have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/biden-rural-voters-big-spending-infrastructure-inflation-reduction-act-8df204b9">had little effect on attitudes</a> among Latinos and other rural voters."If you're blue collar, you're blue collar — it doesn't matter where you're from," Guerra says. "And if you're blue collar, you want a president who is going to get his hands dirty and do stuff for the country and its people."Trump's working-class support in Starr has been most visible in the string of "Trump Trains" that have been taking place across South Texas. In June, at the first rally of the summer, I speak with a professional portrait photographer named Roel Reyes as he's adjusting the flags on his motorcycle on the southern edge of Route 83. He's flying the Texas Lone Star flag next to the Stars and Stripes; on the front of his bike are two signs that proclaim "TRUMP 2024." Reyes smiles as pickup trucks and other bikes pull over behind him, all of them flying Trump banners. Before long, the parade of vehicles snakes 15 miles southeast from Roma to Rio Grande City.In 2020, during the early days of the pandemic, Reyes helped organize the county's first Trump Train. At the time, the riotous parades felt like a protest as much as a rally, a way to openly flout the COVID shutdowns being enforced by local Democrats. Reyes recalls getting plenty of "single-finger salutes" from townspeople. But the trains also gave him the sense that Trump was more popular in Starr than the polls might indicate. During the rallies, he'd get waves from local folks he knew would never admit to supporting Trump in mixed company.<div type="image" title="A patrol vehicle" height="2667" width="2000" msid="113985764" hostid="261" sizebytes="586914"></div>"Trump puts the country first. He puts God first — he's for border control," Reyes says. Next to him, an off-duty Border Patrol agent who has joined the Trump Train nods in agreement.Local Democrats and Republicans agree that the trains gave Trump an electoral advantage in 2020. During the pandemic, Democrats — following strict instructions from the Biden campaign to avoid spreading the virus — stopped knocking on doors and focused instead on their digital strategy. Republicans, meanwhile, kept staging the Trump Trains, knocking on doors, and throwing well-attended barbeques and "asadas." Democrats have become accustomed to hemorrhaging support from working-class white voters. But now it's clear that more and more Latinos — who are overrepresented in the working class, especially in South Texas — are flocking to the Republicans. Being Latino, it appears, no longer dictates how someone will vote.The Trump Train being held is small, but Reyes already has plans to hold larger rallies all across the border lands. This first train, he says, "will be like the trailer before the movie." But it's hard to hear him. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2024/09/09/issues-and-the-2024-election/">Pew Research Center</a> survey from August 26 to September 2 found that among registered voters, 68% of Kamala Harris supporters and 93% of Donald Trump supporters said the economy is "very important" to their vote.Additionally, an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://apnorc.org/projects/registered-voters-are-split-on-trusting-harris-or-trump-to-handle-economic-issues/">Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research</a> poll conducted in October found registered voters were nearly split on who they thought would do a better job handling different areas of the economy, such as jobs and unemployment.The good news is that the economy is broadly doing pretty well these days."We've seen new highs for the stock market's major averages, falling inflation, the Federal Reserve shifting into easing mode and a job market close to the level associated with full employment," Mark Hamrick, a senior economic analyst at the financial services company Bankrate, said in a recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bankrate.com/personal-finance/2024-election-and-the-economy-survey/?tpt=a#top-economic-issue">commentary</a>.While data suggests the US economy is robust, Americans may not agree. The index of <a target="_blank" href="http://www.sca.isr.umich.edu/">current economic conditions</a> from the University of Michigan's Surveys of Consumers has stayed stubbornly low throughout the pandemic recovery.Kurt Reiman, cohead of ElectionWatch at UBS Global Wealth Management, told Business Insider that he doesn't think people feel "euphoric" about the economy. "Voters are reminded daily of the high price of goods and services — whether they're renewing their car or home insurance, or they're going to the grocery store," Reiman said.They're not completely off base. There are a few less-rosy data points out there, like rising long-term unemployment and a historically high level of federal debt.As people get ready to head to polling locations or vote by mail, here's how the US economy has been looking.<h2 id="b1568735-2b7f-4c59-a18d-2eedb9252f8b">The unemployment rate has been under 5% since September 2021</h2>After it rose to around 15% during the height of the early pandemic in April 2020, the unemployment rate has fallen to historically low rates. Even though the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.3% this past July — the highest rate since October 2021 — it has dropped since.While unemployment remains low, the average time unemployed workers were out of a job increased to 22.6 weeks in September. So, those out of work are spending more time looking for their next job.<h2 id="a377c75d-6f92-4f82-9cde-9b55e3445625">Job gains have cooled but remain strong</h2>The economy keeps adding jobs, but the labor market has slowed from its red-hot pandemic recovery.The cooler-but-strong job growth is one indication that the US has continued to avoid a recession — the last one being in 2020.<h2 id="3c79dc9c-b337-418f-8654-44a48ca9035f">There aren't as many job openings per unemployed person as a few years ago</h2>One key measure of the labor market has been turning against job seekers. The number of job openings per unemployed person rose to a record-high ratio in 2022 during the Great Resignation but has declined to 1.1 openings per unemployed person in August and looks more like pre-pandemic levels.It's not impossible to find a job, though; Hamrick said there is "still a reasonable chance that someone who's going to be a job seeker will have a measure of success" depending on their sector and location.<h2 id="b156886f-3057-4ae3-81ab-96249d28aa4c">The inflation rate has slowed dramatically</h2>Inflation has been mostly slowing down after spiking in 2021 and 2022 based on year-over-year increases in the consumer price index.While inflation has slowed, Hamrick said consumers feel constrained by still-high prices. However, Hamrick said, "Americans will continue to claw back some" lost buying power as long as inflation continues to settle down while the job market holds up.Wages have been catching up, and real wages, which are adjusted for inflation, grew 1.5% in September from a year ago.The Federal Reserve has targeted a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-economy-outlook-data-points-to-soft-landing-no-recession-2024-9">soft landing</a> where inflation comes down without mass layoffs. So far, that seems to be happening. Additionally, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interest-rate-cuts-decision-this-week-federal-reserve-powell-inflation-2024-9">Fed cut interest rates in September</a> — the first cut in four years. There's a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">high chance</a> it will decide to do a smaller cut in November, depending on how the data looks and other factors.<h2 id="3d0817c5-b03c-4e0a-a06d-bb0b9cf4edbf">Real disposable personal income per capita has been looking healthy</h2>Real disposable personal income per capita — a widely used measure of the money people have to spend or save — spiked in the early pandemic due to stimulus checks in 2020 and 2021 and the expanded child tax credits for the 2021 tax year.While real disposable personal income per capita cooled off as inflation accelerated in 2022, it has been gradually rising — and is above where it was before the pandemic and close to the pre-pandemic growth trend.<h2 id="28d1bb36-d16a-4262-837c-72d756c3510e">The S&amp;P 500 in 2024 has hit several all-time highs</h2>During 2024, the S&amp;P 500 has been historically high multiple times. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/these-6-charts-suggest-investors-should-proceed-with-caution-as-s-p-500-hits-47th-record-high-of-2024-197f7c0a">MarketWatch</a> reported it has hit 47 record highs this year. This index of large publicly traded US companies reflects corporate America doing quite well, and the rising figures may be good for people's retirement savings portfolios.Reiman chalks it up to strong consumer spending, slowing inflation, and lower interest rates leading to higher corporate profits and valuations.<h2 id="940327d3-930a-4b04-ae6e-e7a1a18f7e9a">Confidence among home builders is still low compared to recent years</h2>While the labor market is showing a lot of strength, the housing market is one area of the economy where there are some concerns. More single-family builders are feeling better about housing than a few months ago but are falling short of the confidence seen a couple of years ago. That's based on the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index, which tracks the health of the single-family housing market.The index, based on what single-family builders surveyed reported, was a not-too-confident reading of 43 out of 100 in October.<h2 id="5596c1a8-aaad-4fe9-8a2a-12db5abc4c25">Federal public debt as a share of GDP is elevated</h2>Reiman said the Biden administration will be "handing off an economy with higher levels of debt than when taking office." Federal debt is high compared to GDP, even looking beyond the spike of the debt as a share of GDP during the pandemic.While federal debt as a share of GDP was slightly above 100% before the pandemic, recent figures are much higher than in the past. Federal debt was 120% of GDP in the second quarter of this year. In the long run, a high debt-to-GDP ratio may lead to expensive interest costs and future tax hikes or spending cuts.

It has been edited for length and clarity.I was delighted when a worker at my local early <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unique-polling-places-usa-2020-10">voting station</a> gave me a sticker that said, "I secured my vote."I put it on my coat and felt proud. It was the first time I'd voted in my life, I turn 82 on Sunday.My husband, William, who died in April at the age of 91, never voted either. We didn't really discuss it during our 64 years of marriage. I'm not exactly sure why he didn't vote himself, but it's not as if he told me I couldn't do so.I got the idea to vote a couple of months ago after talking with my great-niece and a neighbor about the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harris-trump-national-polls-election-2024-10">presidential election in November</a>. "I'd like to vote," I told them, " but I don't know how to read or write."It seemed intimidating, and I couldn't imagine myself going alone. Wanda read out the form to me, I signed my name, and we were good to go.Then, on Wednesday, she took me to the early voting station. I was excited because I didn't even know what one looked like. The poll worker explained the process, and Wanda took me to a booth.She read out the candidates' names, and I pressed the button I wanted on the screen. It was my choice and my decision, and I didn't tell anyone who I voted for.I felt more emotional than I thought I would. It was like getting your first date, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/couple-scheduled-first-kiss-on-google-calendar-took-away-anxiety-2023-2">your first kiss</a>, or being baptized. Something you will never forget.Wanda took me out for a celebratory lunch, and I wore my sticker. Addressing a rally on Friday at Concord, in the run-up to the New Hampshire nominating contest, <keyword id="19906203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trump" source="keywords">Trump</keyword> said that the former South Carolina Governor, who finished third in Iowa, "is OK, but she is not presidential timber". "And when I say that, that probably means she is not going to be chosen as the vice president," Trump, fresh out of his landslide caucus victory by claiming 50 per cent of the vote, told his supporters, The Hill reported. "When you say certain things, it sort of takes them out of play, right?" he added. "I can't say, 'She's not of the timber to be the vice president' and then say, 'Ladies and gentleman, I'm proud to announce that I've picked'." Polls show she is much closer to Trump in New Hampshire, where she is expected to benefit from a more moderate Republican primary electorate -- with undeclared voters participating in the January 23 contest. A recent CBS/YouGov poll had revealed that it is Haley who right now holds a bigger lead over President Joe Biden than either Trump or Florida Governor <keyword id="20189922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ron-desantis" source="keywords">Ron DeSantis</keyword> in potential head-to-head match-ups. With the New Hampshire primary scheduled for January 23, and South Carolina on February 3, the former UN Ambassador said that the Republican presidential race will be a contest between her and Trump. In recent weeks, Trump has stepped up attacks against Haley, saying she needs Biden's supporters to "infiltrate" the party primary to perform well in New Hampshire. Early this week, he reposted a report from the right-wing website The Gateway Pundit that said Haley was not a US citizen because her immigrant parents were not citizens at the time of her birth. The former President also used the Concord rally to take potshots at New Hampshire Governor Chris <keyword id="20264959" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sununu" source="keywords">Sununu</keyword>, who is endorsing Haley, and fellow presidential rival DeSantis. Trump said Sununu was backing a candidate who wasn't "capable" of doing the job, adding that Haley wasn't "tough enough," "smart enough" or "respected enough" to win the Republican party nomination. He dubbed Florida Governor DeSantis one of the greatest "self-destructions I think I've ever witnessed" and claimed that Sununu "didn't have the guts' to run for President". An average of New Hampshire surveys compiled by Decision Desk HQ and The Hill shows Trump ahead 11 points over Haley at roughly 46 per cent and 35 per cent, respectively.
