<p class="p1"><span>The 30-year-old actress stars on The CW's new series "Jane the Virgin," about a young, religious woman who gets pregnant after a mix-up at the doctor where she's accidentally artificially inseminated.</span></p>
<p class="p1">As silly as the concept may sound, the series is based on a very successful Venezuelan telenova, "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312151/">Juana la Virgen</a>."</p>
<p class="p1">The show was received as <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/jane-the-virgin/s01/">one of the best fall premieres</a> with several outlets calling it the best new show of the season.&#xa0;</p>

"They were getting the best education and they were shattering stereotypes. <p class="p1">Rodriguez also turned down a role in Lifetime's "Devious Maids," <a href="http://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/news/a12518/gina-rodriguez-interview/">telling Cosmopolitan</a>, "<span>I am not going to take a role because there's money. It might extend my checkbook but not my integrity."&#xa0;</span>&#xa0;</p>
<p class="p1">While the actress already has a second season of "Jane the Virgin" ahead of her, Rodriguez is keeping busy, working on her own record album.</p>

In addition to the up-front cost of the devices, customers pay Best Buy a $29.99 monthly fee for access to a smartphone app that helps seniors and family members monitor health data and activity. Assured Living's in-home installation service provided by the Geek Squad is a process consumers are already accustomed to - it's no different than installing a smart TV or connected speaker into a customer's home. This could help to normalize RPM technology.</p><p><strong>The proliferation of RPMs will benefit tech companies and health organizations alike:</strong></p><ul><li><strong>RPMs open up opportunities for consumer-facing companies to push into the health space. </strong>As consumers become more comfortable with self-monitoring their health through remote devices and smartphone apps, retail companies and tech giants are presented with an opportunity to leverage their existing consumer-facing products as health monitoring tools. This trend has been seen in Amazon's development of Alexa's healthcare <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/digital-health-briefing-amazon-is-building-a-health-team-for-alexa-hlth-conference-roundup-job-search-app-for-healthcare-adds-full-time-positions-2018-5">services</a>, and Apple's re-positioning of its Watch as a health monitoring <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/digital-health-briefing-apple-watch-shipments-grow-by-double-digits-nokia-settles-on-buyer-for-digital-health-business-healthcare-should-mimic-retail-cms-says-2018-5">tool</a>.</li><li><strong>Access to more elderly patient data could help insurers and providers cut healthcare costs.</strong> Tracking vitals and lifestyle behaviors could help caregivers improve treatment and medication adherence. Providers and insurers are eager for tools that can help clamp down on the 80% of healthcare costs that come from chronic diseases, especially as the US healthcare system stares down an expanding aging population.</li></ul><p><strong>MOST AMERICANS ARE UNAWARE, CONCERNED ABOUT PRECISION MEDICINE: </strong>Two-thirds of Americans haven't heard of personalized medicine or precision medicine, accor<span style="background-color: #ffffff;">ding to a <a href="https://www.genomeweb.com/sites/default/files/public_perspectives_on_pm.pdf">new study</a> commissioned by the Personalized Medicine Coalition and GenomeWeb. Precision medicine, which uses variations in patients' genes, environment, and lifestyle to guide the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, has the potential to drive down healthcare costs</span>. F<span>or example, the Alzheimer's Association </span><a href="https://www.alz.org/documents_custom/2018-facts-and-figures.pdf">reports</a><span> that earlier detection of Alzheimer's can reduce the per-person cost of treatment by $64,000</span>. But low rates of patient awareness as well as uneasiness around how precision medicine will be used are a significant hurdle to increased adoption by providers and insurers. Fifty-two percent of respondents said that the use of personalized medicine tests to deny coverage was a "major concern." While it's illegal for payers to use precision medicine tests to deny coverage, patient misinformation on the matter could prevent hospitals from successfully deploying precision medicine in a clinical setting.</p><p><strong>At the same time, clinician understanding of precision medicine is lacking. </strong>Just 14% of providers would be comfortable interpreting genetic tests for their patients, <a href="http://www.clinical-innovation.com/topics/clinical-practice/74-providers-see-use-genetic-testing-only-14-ready-interpret-results">according</a> to Clinical Innovation+Technology. Still, health systems anticipate long-term savings from precision medicine. That's why providers like John Hopkins University are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/health-leaders-say-amazon-will-disrupt-medical-supply-delivery-cerner-va-finalize-10-billion-deal-clover-health-bets-on-in-home-primary-care-2018-5">developing</a> clinical decision support tools that make it easier for clinicians to interpret genetic test data. LabCorp's renewing its contract, while Quest's contract makes it an in-network provider for all of UnitedHealthcare's members.  The emergence of the VBC model, in which providers are paid based on positive patient outcomes rather than the number of services the patient uses, is good news for insurers - they get the benefit of healthier members at lower costs. And it makes sense for UnitedHealthcare to emphasize its VBC push in a lab setting - as much as $200 billion is wasted annually on excessive testing and treatment, <a href="http://www.healthcarefinancenews.com/news/unnecessary-medical-tests-treatments-cost-200-billion-annually-cause-harm">according</a> to Healthcare Finance News. For providers, the benefits of the VBC model are less clear-cut. In the current fee-for-service reimbursement model, health systems benefit from prescribing additional treatments and services. However, insurers such as UnitedHealthcare argue that the VBC model encourages a faster patient turnaround, which could lead to greater volumes of patients. UnitedHealthcare's Spine and Joint Solution, for instance, reduced hospital <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/digital-health-briefing-unitedhealthcare-demonstrates-benefit-of-value-based-care-walmart-adds-employee-health-tools-cvs-partners-with-chatbot-2018-5">readmission</a> rates by 22%.</p><p><strong>ALIBABA HEALTH SPENDS $1 BILLION IN LATEST HEALTHCARE EXPANSION: </strong>Alibaba Health Information Technology agreed to spend $1.4 billion to purchase several health-related categories on the online shopping platform of its parent company, Alibaba Group, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2018/05/29/alibaba-group-agrees-to-sell-several-tmall-healthcare-categories-to-subsidiary-alibaba-h">according</a> to TechCrunch. The deal gives Alibaba Health ownership of categories that include medical devices and services and other healthcare products, which generated over $3 billion in gross merchandise volume in the fiscal year ending in March 2018. The deal, which expands Alibaba Health product offerings and enables it to reach more consumers, comes soon after Alibaba Health <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/digital-health-briefing-alibaba-doubles-down-on-ai-for-healthcare-providers-fret-over-online-reviews-digital-health-investments-hit-record-high-2018-5">announced</a> plans to increase investments in AI for healthcare. Consolidating business-to-consumer products under Alibaba Health is the next logical step to shore up against the healthcare efforts of competing Chinese tech giants Baidu and Tencent.</p><p><strong>IN OTHER NEWS:</strong></p><ul><li>The <strong>Food and Drug Administration</strong> (FDA) approved a new AI-enabled diagnostic software from <strong>Imagen Technologies</strong> that analyzes X-ray images to detect wrist fractures, <a href="https://www.healthdatamanagement.com/news/fda-approves-ai-algorithm-to-help-detect-wrist-fractures?brief=00000152-14ad-d1cc-a5fa-7cff19540000">according</a> to Health Data Management. The FDA <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/digital-health-briefing-fda-aims-to-expand-digital-health-oversight-fitbit-google-partner-for-health-american-well-will-buy-avizia-2018-4">announced</a> an expansion of its pre-certification process to encourage the development of AI-enabled health tools in April 2018.</li><li><strong>Uber</strong> launched an in-app 911 calling feature that makes it easier for users to contact emergency services, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2018/05/29/uber-adds-911-assistance-to-rider-app/">according</a> to TechCrunch. Uber is piloting additional functionality in seven markets that would enable users to automatically share their location with 911 dispatchers.</li><li>A team of researchers from the US, <span>Germany, and France </span>developed an AI diagnostic tool that's nearly 10% more effective than dermatologists at using images of moles to detect melanoma, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/may/29/skin-cancer-computer-learns-to-detect-skin-cancer-more-accurately-than-a-doctor">according</a> to the Guardian. More accurate diagnostic tools could lead to faster disease detection and help mitigate unnecessary surgeries.</li><li>Georgia-based health system<strong> Emory Healthcare</strong> and personal health platform <strong>Sharecare</strong> <a href="http://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2018/05/25/1512179/0/en/Emory-Healthcare-and-Sharecare-to-launch-Emory-Healthcare-Innovation-Hub.html">announced</a> they're launching The Emory Healthcare Innovation Hub on September 1, 2018. DIGITAL HEALTH BRIEFING: Best Buy sees opportunities in healthcare - Patients uneasy with precision medicine - UnitedHealthcare adds value-based care partnerships

<p>Philae, the first probe that humans have ever landed on a comet, is already sending back images from its journey.</p>
<p>Here's the first shot, <a href="http://www.dlr.de/dlr/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-10081/151_read-12091/#/gallery/17139">taken by Philae from about 1.8 miles above the comet</a> surface, with it's ROLIS instrument, which is a downward-facing camera that was tasked to take images of the comet as Philae descended.</p>

<p>These shots came in Wednesday, Nov. 12, a history-making day for humans in space, and the culmination of a 10-year project that has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-weve-learned-from-rosetta-2014-9">already taught us</a> much about our solar system.</p>
<p>Ten years ago, the European Space Agency launched the Rosetta spacecraft to intercept a comet named 67P/Churyumox-Gerasimenko. For the last decade it has approached, orbited, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rosetta-smells-comet-and-its-bad-2014-10v">smelled</a>, and studied the comet, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rosetta-images-of-comet-67pchuryumov-gerasimenko-2014-9">taking thousands of mind-blowing images along the way.</a></p>
<p>During all this time it's been carrying some very precious cargo inside called the Philae lander.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>On Nov. 12, Rosetta deployed that cargo - the Philae lander - on humanity's mission to make physical contact with a comet for the first time ever.</p>
<p><strong>The lander successfully touched down on the comet at 10:35 am EST (7:35 am PST) on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Right on schedule!</strong></p>
<p>It took Philae 7 hours to descend to the comet's surface - one of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rosetta-land-on-comet-67pchuryumovgerasimenko-2014-10">most difficult maneuvers we've ever tried in space</a>. For the scientists at the ESA and NASA - it was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rosetta-7-hours-of-terror-with-philae-probe-2014-11">7 hours of terror</a>.</p>

But something went wrong and the lander is currently hanging on to the surface but entirely secured.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Philae will have enough battery power, scientists suspect, to obtain data for about <a href="http://www.planetary.org/blogs/emily-lakdawalla/2014/11051415-philae-landing-preview.html">two-and-a-half days</a> after landing. During that time it will collect data from the surface to study the comet's composition.</p>
<p>Comets, like 67P/Churyumox-Gerasimenko, could have supplied Earth with water that was essential for life. Discovering how the solar system evolved, including life on Earth, is one of the goals of the Rosetta mission.</p>

authorities after breaking out of Mexico's most-fortified prison.</span></span></p><p><span><span>How?</span></span></p><p><span><span>Del Castillo, was contacted&#xa0;by the farmer-turned-billionaire-drug lord in&#xa0;</span></span><span><span>2012 after she tweeted about her mistrust in the Mexican government and her anger with the administrations'&#xa0;</span></span>shortcomings in combating&#xa0;the country's poverty.</p><p><span>"Today I believe more in El Chapo Guzmán than in the governments that hide the painful truth from me," del Castillo tweeted and then later deleted in 2012, according to&#xa0;<a href="http://www.hoylosangeles.com/hoyla-web-mensaje-de-kate-del-castillo-dirigido-a-el-chapo-guzman-20150714-story.html" target="_blank">Hoy</a>,&#xa0;a&#xa0;Los Angeles Times's Spanish-language newspaper.</span></p><p>Following her admissions on Twitter,&#xa0;Del Castillo was contacted by one of Guzmán's lawyers who asked her for an address so that <em>El Señor</em>&#xa0;could send her flowers in a show of gratitude for her words.</p><p>She never&#xa0;received the flowers, but did maintain contact with Guzmán and Mexicans are lashing out at their own government over Trump's border plans

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0252230/?ref_=tt_ov_st">Chiwetel Ejiofor</a>&#xa0;is quickly becoming one of the most reliable actors in the movie business with a string of impressive roles, from his Oscar-nominated performance in 2013's "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2024544/?ref_=nm_knf_i1">12 Years A Slave,</a>" to, earlier this year, playing the NASA mission director who has to get Matt Damon home in "The Martian."<p>In theaters this weekend, we'll see Ejiofor opposite Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman in the thriller "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1741273/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_4">Secret in Their Eyes.</a>" A remake of the 2009 Argentine movie that won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2010, it stars Ejiofor as&#xa0;Ray, a former FBI investigator who returns to the Bureau after tracking down the man who killed the daughter of his partner (Roberts) 13 years earlier.&#xa0;Ejiofor and Roberts give intense performances playing two people who are obsessed with the past and go to extreme lengths to find "justice."</p><p>Business Insider chatted with Ejiofor while he took a break from shooting the next Marvel movie, "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1211837/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_1">Doctor Strange,</a>" to talk about his role in "Secret in Their Eyes" and the challenge of staying away from the "rabbit hole" while acting in a movie like this.</p><p><strong>BI: You're in the midst of playing Baron Mordo, the villain in the upcoming "Doctor Strange," right?</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> We have begun, yeah.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>BI: Pictures of you in costume have hit the internet.</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> Yeah, cool.&#xa0;</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><strong>BI: It looks like a comfortable costume.&#xa0;</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> Yeah. I think it's all right. [<em>Laughs</em>.]</p><p><strong>BI: Well, "Secret In Their Eyes" is a very different project. What drew you to it?</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> I had some initial conversations with [director] Billy Ray and I was just kind of fascinated by it. There's a lot of different things happening in the story and I just felt like the two time periods that it takes place in, 2001 and the present day, and seeing what happens to this guy in the time that we don't see him, having this obsessive quality, this intensity to his life, that was something that I was really engaged in. I was very excited when I spoke to Billy Ray about it. And an amazing cast, Julia and Nicole.&#xa0;</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>BI: Were either of them attached when you were talking to Billy Ray?</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> I don't think so. I think that all happened after that. Which was amazing.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>BI: Did you watch the original movie?</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> I didn't when we were shooting or before, but I have since. I wanted to approach it cleanly, but I always felt there was room to do another version of it. Do a more American version of it. I think the original is great, bit it's a different kind of film. Definitely culturally.</p><p><strong>BI: The way you play the Ray character, I saw a lot of Denzel Washington in it. You've worked with him in two films, "Inside Man" and "American Gangster." Did you think of him when doing this role?</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> Interesting. I wasn't thinking of him actually. [<em>Laughs</em>.] I love Denzel. I loved working with him.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>BI: There are parts when you're controlled and then you explode with emotion and rage, which he tends to do in some roles.</strong><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> I suppose in some of the stuff he's done, there's an obsessional quality, and Ray definitely has that. His mind is always ticking, but it's cool that you thought that.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>BI: The subject matter is so dark. Did you have to think back to difficult moments in your life to play this role?</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> No, not really. In a way you don't want to do personal math on stuff like this. You sort of engage in it, but at some distance, otherwise it renders it impossible to play. And I would feel that's the same for Julia with her role. You're trying to get as engaged with the emotions of it and the sense of it and the narrative of it. And the truth of it. Part of the skill of that is not necessarily having to fall down the rabbit hole yourself.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p><strong>BI: That being said, you and Julia look ragged in the movie. Your character literally says to her, "You look like you're 100 years old." Are these roles fun to play even though the subject matter is so brutal?</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> It was pretty serious by the time we got to the scenes at the end of the movie. There was some room to be slightly lighter earlier in the movie. But things take a turn. By the end these characters are so obsessed and beaten by the circumstance that being in that mindset, it was complex and engaging. In a way it's what you want to do as an actor. So in that sense it's enjoyable. But not in the sense of funny, ha-ha.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>BI: Were there things you used through costume, wardrobe, or makeup to put you in the mindset you needed?</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> For me, I liked that he changes his watch. You can't really catch it in the movie, but I really enjoyed that. When he goes away and starts working for the private sector, he picks it up along the way. When he worked for the FBI in the earlier part of the movie, he has a very basic watch. And as we were changing over from different time spans the watch was always something that clicked me into the difference in Ray.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>BI: You've been very busy since "12 Years a Slave" came out. This is your third film released this year. Is that daunting or do you like the constant work?</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> I like it either way. [<em>Laughs</em>.] But what has been enjoyable are the projects I've been working on I've loved. Film, and over the summer I did a play in London. So trying to find that balance of film and theater has been engaging and important to me and I want to continue that. But maybe have a little more time off.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>BI: We saw you last in "The Martian," and after that movie was released, it was criticized by the <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/the-martian-asian-race-character-change-chiwetel-ejiofor-mackenzie-davis/">Media Action Network for Asian Americans</a>&#xa0;because your role, which was an Asian in the book, wasn't cast with an Asian. Did you catch wind of that, and do you have any thoughts on it?</strong></p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></strong><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> I did hear about it. I feel the film is a great example and a very successful example, I think, of diversity in cinema. And I think that really works. I suppose one isn't going to please absolutely everyone, but I think in general the principal of having both racially and in terms of gender, a lot of diversity in the film which goes on to be that successful and has very strong themes about community, was something that I was personally very gratified with.</p><p><strong>BI: In your view, has the diversity issue improved in Hollywood?</strong></p><p><strong>Ejiofor:</strong> I don't know. It's too early to tell. I feel these things will probably be judged generationally. When we look back at this time in cinema, we'll be able to understand a bit more whether diversity was addressed in any way or if things improved during the '90s and into the 2000s, so it's hard to say. But as I said about "The Martian," I think it was great to have so much diversity in that film and that film being so successful, it is a prototype for how films can do that more.&#xa0;</p><p><em>"Secret in Their Eyes" opens in theaters on Friday. <p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">If you weren't an early adopter of Twitter, or don't spend a ton of time checking your timeline (or if you're just a normal human being with better things to do) you can get a little behind in Twitter abbreviations and acronyms.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Also, with Twitter's IPO coming up, would-be investors ought to be able to understand the medium they're considering investing in.<br /></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Here's our crash course in lingo to help you feel a little less lost navigating the Twitterverse:</span></p>
<p><strong>SMH = Shaking My Head</strong>. You can use SMH when you read something that you don't agree with, or something that disgusts you. </p>
<p><strong>SMDH = Shaking My Damn Head.</strong> This is useful if you REALLY don't agree with something, or if something REALLY disgusts you.</p>
<p><strong>SMH, SMDH = Shaking My Head, Shaking My DAMN Head.</strong> The aforementioned in one phrase. It's important to note that using the two phrases together is a more sarcastic reaction than an earnest one if the reaction is to something empirically eye-rolling.</p>
<p><strong>H/T = Hat Tip.</strong> Use this if you're sharing something you heard through someone else. It's nice to give credit. </p>


<p><strong><br />RT = Retweet.</strong> Retweet means someone said something you either: agree with, laughed at, or wish you thought of first. When you retweet, you are taking someone else's tweet and putting it on your own timeline so that your followers can see it. Retweets are often not endorsements. <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/katienotopoulos/the-latest-twitter-trend-manual-retweet-shaming">Manual Retweets, or, copying and pasting someone's tweet and tacking an "RT" before it</a>, making the tweet your own, is something many people "SMH, SMDH" at. </p>

<p><strong><br />MT = Modified Tweet.</strong> MT is when you copy and paste someone's tweet and add your own comment, but you have to shorten the original tweet to make everything fit. </p>


<p><strong><br />TBH = To Be Honest.</strong> If you're just being honest about your opinions, tack on a "tbh" to the end of whatever it is you're saying. Other variations include: TBQH (To Be Quite Honest).</p>

<p><strong><br />IMO = In My Opinion</strong> (can also be IMHO, In My Humble Opinion). Much like TBH and TBQH, these are acronyms you can tack onto a tweet to help you convey your opinion. It's a shorter way to say 'just sayin', which is the virtual equivalent of a patronizing shrug. </p>


<p><strong><br />ICYMI = In Case You Missed It.</strong> Twitter moves fast. Sometimes you can't see everything or catch every story. If someone sends out a link prefaced with ICYMI, they've likely sent it out earlier or are mentioning something that they assume most people have already seen. </p>


<p><strong><br /># = Hashtag.</strong> An easy way to follow along with an event unfolding on Twitter. Clicking on the hashtag will bring you to everyone tweeting about the same thing. This is good for live events people are watching en masse, like the Super Bowl or the Grammys, as well as breaking news.</p>


<p><br /><strong>The Dot before using someone's @ name: </strong>If you put a period before someone's username at the beginning of a tweet, everyone who follows you will be able to see that tweet. If you start the tweet with someone's username, the only people who will be able to read it are those who follow both you AND the person you are tweeting.</p>


<p><br /><strong>Subtweet =</strong> Tweeting behind someone's back. Subtweeting occurs when you tweet about someone or something without tagging them using the @ symbol. A subtweet can also be a general complaint directed at no one person in particular. </p>


<p><br />There are other common phrases you'll see in certain parts of Twitter. Among Seinfeld fans, a mispelling of the word "imagine" as "imagen" floats around often, paying homage to a humorous Twitter account, @Seinfeld2000. The account creates obscure would-never-be-episodes of Seinfeld but spells everything wrong.</p>

<p><br />If that seems weird to you, be wary of <strong>Weird Twitter</strong>. According to KnowYourMeme, <a href="http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/weird-twitter">Weird Twitter refers to</a> a "loosely connected group of Twitter users who are known to experiment with spelling, punctuation and format for humor or poetry."</p>

<p>Don't forget the Twitter Canoe. A <strong>Twitter Canoe</strong> is where you're stuck in a thread with a bunch of people replying at one another. The earliest mention of a Twitter Canoe is from August 2012 by Lindsey Weber, an editor at <a href="http://www.vulture.com/">New York Magazine's Vulture</a>. </p>
