<ul class="summary-list"><li>A new <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac2e6bhttps://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac2e6b">study</a> describes what would happen to global <keyword id="12343639" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="landmarks" source="Orion">landmarks</keyword> under various degrees of sea-level rise.</li><li>In the best-case scenario, sea levels would rise nearly 10 feet in the next 200 to 2,000 years.</li></ul><p>Several times each year, the tide in Venice, Italy, rises more than 2 feet above the average sea level. Sometimes, this results in mild <keyword id="11919825" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="flooding" source="Orion">flooding</keyword> - inconvenient puddles along the sidewalk. But in certain years, like 2019, floods can swallow the city, damaging infrastructure and costing lives.</p><p>More cities will need to prepare for that reality as global temperatures climb, and sea levels rise along with them. A recent report from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on <keyword id="11896311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">Climate Change</keyword> (IPCC) found that human-caused emissions have already led the planet to warm by 1.1 degrees Celsius in the last 170 years. When global temperatures rise, ice sheets and glaciers melt, sending water into the ocean. Water also naturally expands as it warms, which raises the average sea level.</p><p>The IPCC report warned that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-impacts-to-last-millennia-ipcc-report-2021-8">sea levels will continue to rise for centuries to millennia</a>, no matter what happens next. </p><p>A <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac2e6bhttps://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac2e6b">new study</a> from Climate Central, a nonprofit research group, suggests that 4 degrees of warming could lead to nearly 30 feet of sea-level rise over the next 200 to 2,000 years. </p><p>In that worst-case scenario, according to the researchers, the resulting flooding would force at least 50 major cities to either start emptying out or mount unprecedented defenses against the water. High tides could encroach on land hosting 15% of the global population (about 1 billion people).</p><p>If the world continues on its current emissions path, global temperatures are projected to climb 3 degrees, which would cause seas to rise nearly 21 feet. In that case, more than 800 million people could be vulnerable to sea-level rise - and many the world's most important landmarks could be submerged in water.</p><p>Some of that can still be avoided, though. Under the best-case scenario, global temperatures would climb just 1.5 degrees Celsius over the next 200 to 2,000 years, leading to around 10 feet of sea-level rise. But that would require major systemic changes to cut emissions, since the world is currently on track to exceed 1.5 degrees of warming in the 2030s, according to the IPCC. Plus, even under that limited amount of warming, the Climate Central researchers estimate that 510 million people would be vulnerable to sea-level rise.</p><p>The graphics below show how landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa and Statue of Liberty would look under 3 degrees of warming.</p><h2>Rising seas pose a particular threat to Asian landmarks</h2><p>The Climate Central study estimates that Asian countries - particularly China, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam - are most vulnerable to sea-level rise.</p><p>The Temple of Literature in Hanoi, Vietnam, wouldn't experience any flooding under 1.5 degrees of warming, but it would under 3 degrees. Toggle back and forth on the image below to see the difference. </p><p>Floods would swallow the entrance to the Lungshan Temple in Taipei, Taiwan, if global sea levels rose nearly 21 feet.</p><p>The streets below the Lujiazui skyscrapers in Shanghai would also be covered in water. The study estimates that 83% of Shanghai's population is vulnerable to flooding under 1.5 degrees of warming, and 94% is vulnerable under 3 degrees.</p><p>If emissions continue on their current path, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai could wind up wading in water, too.</p><p>And the Lalbagh Fort in Dhaka, Bangladesh would no longer be accessible on foot. Half of Dhaka's population is vulnerable to flooding under 1.5 degrees of warming. Under 3 degrees of warming, that figures rises to 82%.</p><h2>Landmarks in the US, Europe, and South America are also vulnerable</h2><p>In the US, coastal cities like New York are particularly vulnerable to flooding. Based on the level of warming (1.1 degrees Celsius) alone, nearly 4% of New York City's population will experience flooding over the next 200 to 2,000 years . That figure could rise to 19% under 3 degrees of warming, which would leave the base of the Statue of Liberty inundated. </p><p>On the opposite coast, the Santa Monica Pier in California could disappear underwater if sea levels rose nearly 21 feet globally.</p><p>The UK's Buckingham Palace could get partially swallowed. The warming we've already seen means around 5% of the UK's population will be vulnerable to flooding over the coming centuries. With 3 degrees of warming, that share would jump to 11%.</p><p>If emissions continue on their current path, pedestrians would no longer be able to stroll through Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki, Greece.</p><p>Nor would they be able to enter the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.</p><p>Under 3 degrees of warming, water could form a moat around the Plaza de España in Seville, Spain. Nearly 4% of Spain's population is vulnerable to flooding under 1.5 degrees of warming, according to the study. That figure rises to 8% under 3 degrees of warming.</p><p>A few landmarks, like the Plaza de la Catedral in Havana, Cuba, could get swallowed up entirely.</p><p>But there's still time: The study estimates that cutting emissions in half by 2030 could limit warming to just 1.5 degrees. In that case, the authors write, widespread flooding "may be limited to a handful of locations."</p>

The birds, which are located in remote areas with temperatures as low as -58 degrees, are hard to study. </p><p>"This is an exciting discovery. The new satellite images of Antarctica's coastline have enabled us to find these new colonies," Lead author Dr. Peter Fretwell said in a statement. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Almost half of Canada's last remaining intact ice shelf has suddenly collapsed into the ocean.</li><li>Satellite images show that it formed two icebergs, one of which is almost the size of Manhattan.</li><li>The collapse comes amid a summer that's seen hotter-than-average temperatures, which scientists say is a result of <keyword id="6361617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change">climate change</keyword>.</li><li>A research camp <a href="https://e360.yale.edu/digest/as-record-arctic-heat-continues-canadas-last-intact-ice-shelf-collapses">was lost in the collapse</a>.</li></ul><p style="text-align: left;">A massive chunk of Canada's last fully intact ice shelf, some 4,000 years old, has broken off, reducing the shelf by more than half, scientists <a href="https://twitter.com/ECCC_CIS/status/1290045576692658176">reported last Sunday</a>. After separating from the shelf, the piece split in two, forming an iceberg almost the size of Manhattan.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Climate change likely fueled the collapse of the shelf, researchers said. Satellite imagery shows that about 43% of the shelf broke off, forming pieces that were up to 260 feet thick.</p><p style="text-align: left;">"Entire cities are that size," Copland <a href="https://ca.reuters.com/article/topNews/idCAKCN2523JH">told Reuters</a>. "This was the largest remaining intact ice shelf, and it's disintegrated, basically."</p><p style="text-align: left;">Unlike glaciers, which sit atop land, ice shelves float in the ocean. They're typically hundreds to thousands of years old and thicker than sea ice. Before the Milne ice shelf broke apart, it was larger than DC.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Temperatures rise faster in the Arctic</h2><p style="text-align: left;">The Arctic is warming <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/12/eaaw9883">much faster</a> than the rest of the world, a phenomenon known as polar amplification, and those hot temperatures are causing ice to melt. Today, for example, polar ice caps are melting <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/mar/11/polar-ice-caps-melting-six-times-faster-than-in-1990s">six times faster</a> than in the 1990s.</p><p style="text-align: left;">In Canada, there used to be a continuous ice shelf spanning the northern coast of Ellesmere, but human-made warming has caused it to break apart, White said. By 2005, Milne was "really the last complete ice shelf," she told the <a href="https://apnews.com/8077f82701c655ddebc6aafbb3dd453e">Associated Press</a>.</p><p style="text-align: left;">While <a href="https://newsroom.carleton.ca/2020/nunavuts-milne-ice-shelf-suddenly-collapses/">scientists considered</a> Milne to be less vulnerable to collapse, as it's protected in the Milne Fiord, the shelf has sustained cracks over the years.</p>

That would send massive quantities of ice into the oceans, potentially leading to rapid sea-level rise around the world.<br /><br />If a pulse were to happen, the sea level in South <keyword id="6357385" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="florida">Florida</keyword> could <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/miami-floods-sea-level-rise-solutions-2018-4">increase by 10 to 30 feet by 2100</a>. But because water - like most things - expands when it warms, sea-level rise is inevitable even if the ice sheets don't melt, since the oceans absorb 93% of the extra heat that greenhouse gases trap in the atmosphere.  <br /><br />It's one thing to talk about these threats in the abstract. But it's a different ballgame when we see visual proof.<br /><br /><br />

People are using the viral '10-year challenge' as a stark warning about what's happening to our planet

It's one of the main gases driving global warming.</p><p>An estimated one-quarter of humans' methane <keyword id="12152918" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="emissions" source="Orion">emissions</keyword> come from extracting coal, oil, and natural gas for fuel. Occasionally, the wells and pipelines that carry that fuel will experience a major leak.</p><p>But a new planet-wide map, based on thousands of <keyword id="12292571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="satellite-images" source="Orion">satellite images</keyword>, reveals that fossil-fuel operations are secretly leaking far more methane than researchers thought, and they're doing it on a daily basis.</p><div type="image" title="satellite image show green methane plume in the southern united states" height="1874" width="2499" msid="89332853" hostid="261"></div><p>"We didn't realize initially that every day we would find these giant emitters around the globe," Thomas Lauvaux, a researcher studying greenhouse-gas emissions at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), who led the mapping effort, told Insider.</p><p>"It's leaking everywhere," he added, "and we're not doing a good job."</p><p>Lauvaux led an international team of researchers to analyze two years of daily data from Europe's Sentinel-5P satellite, from 2019 through 2020. The view from space revealed 1,800 methane plumes. Most of these hotspots — 1,200 of them, primarily in the US and western Asia — are linked to fossil-fuel extraction operations, like oil and gas pipelines.</p><div type="image" title="world map shows oil gas pipelines with clusters of orange dots representing major methane emissions" height="4005" width="5341" msid="89332855" hostid="261"></div><p>"We thought it would happen once in a while, and they were very specific events in specific places, accidental mostly," Lauvaux said, adding, "Not at all. They're very systematic. They come back a lot along the infrastructure: pipelines and compressor stations and wells."</p><p>He suspects that many of these methane plumes come from routine maintenance.</p><p>"They open the valves, and the methane and natural gas blow out, and in the meantime, they can fix whatever they have to fix," he said.</p><p>Lauvaux's team consists of researchers from CNRS, the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), and the data-analytics company Kayrros. Their <a href="http://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abm1676">study</a> was published in the journal <keyword id="11896083" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="science" source="Orion">Science</keyword> on Thursday.</p><p>Based on this and a <a href="https://insideclimatenews.org/news/22042020/permian-basin-methane-emissions-texas-new-mexico/">series</a> of <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.0c04117">prior</a> <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aar7204">studies</a> that have <a href="https://research.noaa.gov/article/ArtMID/587/ArticleID/2474/Airborne-research-shows-East-Coast-cities-emitting-twice-as-much-methane-as-estimated">measured methane</a> at particular sites, Lauvaux roughly estimates that human activities could be emitting twice as much methane as governments report.</p><h2>The methane map is 'scary,' but it represents a big opportunity</h2><div type="image" title="yellow gas pipeline above worker in blue jumpsuit in snow" height="1549" width="2065" msid="89332856" hostid="261"></div><p>The methane plumes in the new map have a warming effect on Earth's atmosphere that's comparable to 20 million additional vehicles on the road for one year, according to the study.</p><p>"It's a little scary," Lauvaux said, adding, "Very few leaks are responsible for a huge amount of methane."</p><p>But it also presents an opportunity: If governments and fossil-fuel companies stop these few major leaks, it will make a big dent in their emissions. It's low-hanging fruit, Lauvaux said, and stopping routine leaks could even save companies money.</p><p>In the US, ultra-emitters could save $250 per ton of methane if they eliminate routine leaks, the researchers calculated.</p><p>The US, Turkmenistan, Russia, and Iran are some of the biggest culprits on Lauvaux's map. He was surprised to find relatively few methane flares in oil states like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. He's not sure why — that's a subject for future research. </p><p>Still, Lauvaux's team estimated that their map represents just one-tenth of the fossil-fuel industry's total methane emissions. These are just the biggest plumes, releasing more than 25 metric tons of methane per hour. There are surely many smaller plumes that the satellite can't detect.</p><p>What's more, Lauvaux had to leave the Permian Basin — a major US gas field — out of his analysis, because the baseline methane levels there were too high to detect individual plumes.</p><p>"We have more work to do than we imagine," Lauvaux said, adding, "That's for sure."</p>

A third of the country, an area about the size of Colorado, is now underwater, according to the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/un-issues-flash-appeal-160-million-help-pakistan-with-floods-2022-08-30/">country's climate minister.</a></p><p>Officials estimate that more than <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/25/asia/pakistan-flooding-climate-minister-intl-hnk/index.html">33 million Pakistanis</a> — one in seven people in the country — have been affected by the flooding. Two months of consecutive rain have killed 1,191 people as of Wednesday, according to Pakistan's <a href="http://cms.ndma.gov.pk/storage/app/public/situation-reports/August2022/AQxxCfU9o78SEudlTEyf.pdf">National Disaster Management Authority</a>.</p><p>"Pakistan is awash in suffering," Antonio Guterres, secretary general of the United Nations, said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/antonioguterres/status/1564556094680227841?s=20&amp;t=qsHdbX6KfBkS5JI9pG8fFw">video statement</a> Tuesday, while issuing an urgent appeal for $160 million in aid. "The Pakistani people are facing a monsoon on steroids — the relentless impact of epochal levels of rain and flooding," he added.</p><p>Wealthy industrialized countries have pumped far more greenhouse gas emissions — a key driver of climate change — into the air than Pakistan, a low-emitting nation. Early government estimates put the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-keep-moving-to-disaster-prone-areas-new-report-warns-2022-4">damage from the floods</a> at more than $10 billion. </p><p>"Seventy-two districts of Pakistan are in calamity and all four corners of Pakistan are underwater," Sharif said at a press conference Tuesday, according to <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/aug/30/pakistan-monsoon-on-steroids-flooding-warning-antonio-guterres">The Guardian</a>. Rising temperatures warm up the atmosphere, and warmer air can retain more water, leading to more intense rainfall and flooding events. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/melting-glaciers-reveal-human-remains-plane-wreck-swiss-alps-2022-8">Melting glaciers and snow</a> also contribute to flooding. Tomorrow, it could be your country."</p>

Deadly floods in Pakistan highlight a troubling problem. It's at the center of the climate crisis, but barely contributes to global emissions.

At those temperatures, frostbite can set in within five minutes, according to the <a href="https://alerts.weather.gov/cap/wwacapget.php?x=IL125CE178FDD4.WindChillWarning.125CE198D1E0IL.LOTWSWLOT.d57ab62eb7861a9c588b1dc10e6bce0a">Chicago National Weather Service office</a>. At least eleven deaths in Midwest have been linked to the weather this week. </p><p>The cold snap has prompted some people - <a href="https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1090074254010404864">most notably President Donald Trump</a> - to question how temperatures could get so low given that the Earth is warming.</p><p>Generally, polar-vortex events - which are short-term weather patterns - shouldn't be confused with long-term changes in Earth's climate. A strong polar vortex stays where it belongs, swirling around the North Pole. But sometimes the circulation of the polar vortex weakens, causing surges of frigid air to splinter off and drift south.</p><p>The freezing air is carried by the <a href="http://glossary.ametsoc.org/wiki/Polar-front_jet_stream">jet stream</a>, a current of wind that extends around the hemisphere and divides the air masses in the polar region from those farther south.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>BI Graphics/NOAA</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Although researchers have not yet reached a consensus, many are starting to link the weakening of the polar vortex to the warming Arctic, as <a href="https://insideclimatenews.org/news/27092017/polar-vortex-cold-snap-arctic-ice-loss-global-warming-climate-change">Inside Climate News reported</a>.</p><p>The logic goes like this: Because temperatures are rising in the Arctic at <a href="https://theconversation.com/how-frigid-polar-vortex-blasts-are-connected-to-global-warming-110653">double the rate of the rest of the planet</a>, the difference between temperatures at the North Pole and continents at lower latitudes is decreasing. Less disparity in temperatures means less difference between air pressure levels, which weakens the jet stream. That can lead the jet stream to take longer, less direct paths.</p><p>If the jet stream wanders enough, that can disrupt the natural flow of the polar vortex, weakening it. A weakened polar vortex sends freezing Arctic air south, towards North America, Europe, and Asia. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/NOAA/NASA/Handout </span></p><p class="caption">A NOAA satellite image of cold winter weather descending on the continental US.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>A 2017 study found that the frequency of winter polar-vortex events has <a href="https://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/abs/10.1175/BAMS-D-16-0259.1">increased by as much as 140% over the past four decades</a>, perhaps because of climate change.</p><p>"Stronger polar-vortex states are decreasing and weak polar-vortex states and increasing," Cohen, a co-author on the study, explained. </p><p>He noted that Arctic warming and melting sea ice are amplifying conditions typically associated with a <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/dreaded-polar-vortex-may-be-shifting/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">weakening polar vortex</a><span>. In <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-02992-9">another study</a> published last year, </span><span>Cohen also found a connection between rising Arctic temperatures and severe winter weather in the eastern US.</span></p><p>"I see a direct connection to changes in the Arctic, that it's warming faster than the rest of globe," Cohen said. "But other people look at it and say, 'weather happens and it's not anything new.'"</p><p><span><a href="https://www.wri.org/blog/2019/01/climate-change-frigid-temperatures-and-polar-vortex-3-things-know">The World Resources Institute (WRI) also reported</a> that increasing sea ice melt, particularly in the Barents-Kara seas north of Russia, has been linked to colder winters and more cold snaps in Siberia. </span></p><p>Kelly Levin, a senior associate at WRI, told Business Insider that she believes "this is definitely something we need to pay attention to."</p><p>"Instead of seeing this as a disconnected set of events, we need to really explore links between broader patterns of warming climate and extreme weather," Levin said. </p>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-your-phone-smartphone-stops-working-when-its-cold-2016-10">The science behind why your phone shuts down when it's cold outside</a></h3>        <div>                    </div>    </div>
