We can see how this may show him in a favourable light for green card aspirants. And while we’re not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, it is important to remember that Trump has made his discriminatory nature very public in several instances. At a recent campaign event in Wisconsin, Trump criticised Biden's immigration policies, particularly lambasting a new program allowing undocumented spouses of US citizens to apply for permanent residence without leaving the country. Trump characterised immigration under Biden as an "invasion" and argued against discussing amnesty, urging instead for measures to halt what he perceives as an influx of unauthorised migrants. Estimates from the Department of Homeland Security suggest that approximately 11 million migrants currently reside in the US without authorization, a statistic that has been central to Trump's arguments against leniency in immigration policy.

"And I was also dating him," she said about her now-husband.Bajaj's husband, Darshan Shah, worked as a Sony Pictures producer in Mumbai when she received the offer. He said he was happy with his life in India so the two agreed to do <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dating-long-distance-relationship-online-success-married-switzerland-2024-7">long distance</a> while she tried out the new job.Bajaj first landed in the US in January 2017 and said she didn't adjust until about a year later. "Your chores are taken care of, your food is ready. "We like to do a lot of things other than our full time jobs."Bajaj said if she hadn't had an opportunity in the US, she may have tried out another country. She and Shah enjoy being pushed out of their comfort zones.But moving to the US isn't for everyone.Bajaj warns that navigating the job market requires networking and being able to handle rejections. Bajaj said that if you already have a comfortable life and "made it" in your home country, you should ask yourself if you're ready to start all over again.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Immigration is one of the thorniest public policy issues and one that will define the 2024 election.</li><li>Biden has had to pivot on some of his border policies after running against Trump's efforts in 2020.</li></ul>Very few issues animate Americans more than immigration.And under the presidencies of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden, divisions over the issue have only sharpened further.Trump's 2016 presidential campaign was defined by his hard-line views on immigration: arguing for a wall at the US-Mexico border and insisting that Mexico pay for said barrier, pushing for the deportations of millions of undocumented immigrants, and calling for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country.Once in office, Trump sought to execute his broad vision. His administration constructed 455 miles of fencing along the southern border, but much of the wall simply replaced anti-vehicle barriers with taller steel bars. And despite Trump's rhetoric on ramping up deportations, the number of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/11/us/politics/trump-deportations-undocumented-immigrants.html">individuals who were removed from the US</a> declined from October 2018 to September 2019.Biden in the 2020 election strongly denounced Trump's immigration policies, voicing his opposition to a border wall, blasting the GOP administration's family separation policy, and promising a more humane approach toward migrants at the southern border.But since Biden took office, an explosion in border apprehensions — along with scores of migrants arriving in Democratic-led cities like Chicago and New York — has became a political liability, with voters giving him <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-immigration-us-mexico-border-disapproval-poll-abbott-adams-2023-9">low marks</a> on the issue.Here's a look at Biden and Trump's positions on immigration, one of the defining issues of the November election:<h2 class="premium" id="24b5896f-83f5-4b23-b6a1-42591ce94e58">Where Joe Biden stands on immigration</h2>Immigration has been one of the trickiest policy areas for Biden, as he came into office seeking to reverse many Trump-era policies but has instead often found himself on the defensive on the issue.Republicans across the country have routinely excoriated Biden over border security since taking office, pointing their fingers at him over <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/02/15/migrant-encounters-at-the-us-mexico-border-hit-a-record-high-at-the-end-of-2023/">record levels of apprehensions</a> at the border. In February, the GOP-controlled House of Representatives impeached Homeland Security Secretary <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alejandro-mayorkas-impeachment-trial-what-happens-immigration-biden-2024-4">Alejandro Mayorkas</a>, contending that he had not enforced the country's immigration laws. (The Democratic-led Senate subsequently squashed the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alejandro-mayorkas-impeachment-trial-killed-murkowski-present-2024-4">impeachment charges</a> against Mayorkas.)Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott over the past two years has pushed back against what he said is Biden's lack of border security by sending hundreds of thousands of migrants to Chicago and New York. And it's created a difficult situation for Democratic officials like New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who has had to tackle budgetary challenges in housing migrants.Biden this year pushed for the passage of a Senate-crafted bipartisan bill, which would have overhauled the US asylum system, among other measures intended to strengthen security at the border. "That's what peace looks like."Trump's stance on the war is not quite as clear, and his friendliness with Russian President Vladimir Putin has made his views even murkier. They're likely to be young, male, working in one of three industries, making less than $40,000 a year, and living in one of four states, according to a Goldman Sachs report published in April and based on an analysis of government data.<h2>The typical recent immigrant is more likely than the US-born population to have a college degree</h2>The Goldman Sachs report said much of the recent uptick in immigration to the US has been tied to a rise in "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.dhs.gov/ohss/topics/immigration/population-estimates/unauthorized-resident">unauthorized immigration</a>" — foreign-born people coming into the US who aren't legal US residents.The report said many of these people came from South America, Central America, and Mexico — and that the number of immigrants from these regions likely tripled in 2023 compared to its pre-pandemic average.In recent years, over half of immigrants settled in one of four states: Florida, California, Texas, and New York. The next most popular states were New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Georgia. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/chicago-mayor-migrants-suburbs/">Accommodative policies</a> toward immigrants and proximity to the Southern border have both impacted their destinations.Among immigrants aged 16 and older who came to the US within the last three years, nearly 90% of them were between the ages of 16 and 54, compared to 62% of the US-born population aged 16 and older.Roughly 64% of these recent immigrants were working or looking for work, compared to 62% of US-born workers. Recent immigrants had an unemployment rate of 6.3%, compared to 3.8% for US-born workers.Among recent immigrants aged 16 and older, about 55% were male, compared to 46% of US-born individuals in the same age group.Recent immigrants were much less likely than the US-born population to have graduated from high school. Nearly a quarter of recent immigrants aged 16 or older had less than a high school education, compared to 10% of the US-born population.However, recent immigrants were more likely than US-born Americans to have a college degree. Over 39% of recent immigrants aged 16 or older had a bachelor's or advanced degree, compared to 34% of the US-born population. The biggest disparity was in the share of workers with only "some college" education: about 13% of recent immigrants and 28% of the US-born population.<h2>The typical recent immigrant is likely to make less than $40,000 a year</h2>The most common industries for recent immigrant workers were construction, professional and business, and accommodation and food services.Over 16% of recent immigrants worked in the construction industry, compared to 6.4% of US-born workers. Among the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/iag/tgs/iag23.htm">most common</a> jobs in this industry are construction laborers, carpenters, and electricians, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics.Roughly 17% of immigrants worked in the professional and business industry, compared to 12% of US-born workers. Among the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/iag/tgs/iag60.htm">most common</a> jobs in this industry are janitors, security guards, and landscaping and groundskeeping workers.About 12% of recent immigrants worked in the accommodation and food services industry, compared to 7% of US-born workers.
