According to the dean of the institution, the answer lies in innovative thinking. “The problems are not limited to one particular domain or expertise. However, the basic skills remain the same. But what differentiates an engineer from other professionals is the right attitude and innovative thought process — the ability to think afresh,” Manish Shrikhande, Dean, Sponsored Research &amp; Industrial Consultancy (SRIC) at IIT Roorkee told Business Insider. What gives engineers an edge is ‘the incremental improvement’ they can add while solving a problem. “When we are looking at an engineer graduating from college, we are looking at a productive life of over 30 years. That will only happen when they know how to think,” he said. The dean of IIT Roorkee says what you learn in graduation will be obsolete in 3 years

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are looking forward to better placements this December as compared to last year in the same month. There has been an increase of about 25%-30% in the pre-placement offers (PPOs) and the companies are eager to sign up to recruit the students. 
 The companies that had already hired students as interns have taken the PPO route this year and are ready to recruit them full time. Several <keyword id="6456931" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Roorkee">IIT-Roorkee</keyword> students have been hired by the PPOs in the companies like American Express India, Vodafone, Accenture Services, Visa and <keyword id="193108" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Capital-One">Capital One</keyword> <keyword id="6354241" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Financial-Services">Financial Services</keyword>. Similarly in IIT-Kanpur, Barclays, which used to visit the campus, has offered PPOs to candidates, but has not confirmed its participation in the placement season. HUL is another such company. 
 "Across IITs, we have seen that PPOs are on the rise. We expect the number to go up. The rise in PPOs is the fallout of the internship process getting streamlined," IIT-Madras training and placement advisor <keyword id="3807344" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="manu-santhanam">Manu Santhanam</keyword> told ET. 
 
IIT-Madras, last year, received 69 PPOs and it has already received 64 this year. 
 In <keyword id="6355690" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT-Bombay</keyword>, 125 companies have signed up for the recruitment through the PPO route. According to <keyword id="186045" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rakesh-Patel">Rakesh Patel</keyword>, Placement Team Leader, 270 companies have already signed in and the figure is expected to touch 320. . At IIT-Roorkee, a little more than 110 "quality" PPOs have been offered and 30 are in the pipeline. This marks about 305 rise from last year. 
 
"These are very good PPOs, not those offered by start-ups. Nearly 300 companies are expected to land up on campus for the final placement process," placement head N P Padhy, told ET. 
 <keyword id="1244961" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-BHU">IIT-BHU</keyword> has also seen a hike of about 32% in PPOs to 94 from 72 in 2015. IIT-Kharagpur has received 150 PPOs and is inching closer to its last year's mark of 170. 
 
The institute is expecting 250 companies to arrive on campus for recruitment, which begins, from December 1. Around 1,950 students are gearing up to sit in the placement process.

IITs are expecting a bumper recruitment this year as pre placement offers galore

Students bagging Rs one crore plus packages has shrunk to its smallest in the past three years in Indian School of technology. 
 According to NP Padhy, professor-incharge for placements at <keyword id="6359674" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Roorkee">IIT Roorkee</keyword>, there are many reasons that led to this. Some of them include a sharp decline in international offers from US firms, a cutback in stock options offered by overseas firms and big companies such as <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> choosing to stay away from campus recruitment. 
 It is being estimated that the number of students who have bagged Rs 1 crore-plus packages - including base salary, ESOPs, joining bonuses and relocation allowance - has fallen 30-40% from last year's levels. In all, students at <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> Madras, Roorkee, BHU, Guwahati and Kharagpur, for instance, received 15 Rs 1 crore plus offers this year, compared to about 27 last year. 
 "Crore-plus packages in 2014 would have been upwards of 60 across IITs. They are down over 50% since then. When we ask companies now, they say that their international requirements have gone down because of the current economic uncertainty." This is a far cry from the placement season of 2014," Professor Kaustubha Mohanty, head, <keyword id="3985178" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="centre-for-career-development">Centre for Career Development</keyword> at IIT Guwahati, told ET. 
 The year was the high point across IIT campuses in terms of Rs 1 crore-plus offers, when international recruiters such as <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>, <keyword id="43340" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oracle">Oracle</keyword>, Google and <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> competed with each other to bag talent. 
 
Facebook has stayed away from IIT campuses since 2014. This year, even Google opted out of the traditional placement drive to recruit students directly. 
 
As a result, Uber, Microsoft and Oracle were among the only international recruiters offering Rs 1 crore-plus packages (all inclusive) at IIT campuses this year. 
 
Of them, Microsoft and Oracle cut down on international offers, according to placement officials at IITs. 
 
Uber offered the highest base package of $110,000 for an overseas posting, followed by Microsoft ($106,000) and Oracle ($100,000). 
 
Cost to company among the international offers barely crossed Rs 1.2 crore this year (inclusive of bonuses and stock options), compared to Rs 2 crore-plus in 2014.

Not many IIT students are bagging Rs 1 core-plus packages now. Here’s why

The helmet works like an airbag that can open up in less than 100 milliseconds in case of an impact. It works better than traditional <keyword id="6466767" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="helmets">helmets</keyword> and are also capable of reducing peak impact acceleration and prevent internal brain bleeds. According to the design, the inflatable helmet will be made of<a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/iit-roorkee-students-develop-inflatable-helmet/story-mZpNONfpZ3vWxjeY5Ee4TL.html"> Kevlar</a>. It comes with in-built sensors that measure a host of parameters to detect collision - like acceleration, lean angle and velocity. In case an impact is detected, the helmet inflates and forms a cushion around the cranium to reduce the chances of head injury by four times. The device has been developed by three students, Sarang Nagwanshi, Mohit Siddha and Rajvardhan Singh, who are all in the final year of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Roorkee. They have been guided by Prof. Sanjay Upadhyay from the Department of Mechanical &amp; Industrial Engineering, IIT Roorkee. The three students took inspiration from the <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/science/now-an-inflatable-helmet-for-bikers/article24255799.ece?homepage=true">inflatable space antennae </a>that they came across during an internship project in ISRO. As a helmet like this was being developed in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> for the first time, they got very limited support from any external source. Unlike the inflatable helmets developed overseas, the sensors they are planning to use are cheap and easily available. Therefore, the price of the product will be around ₹1,500-3,000 which is close to the cost of a traditional helmet. The product was recently tested for its productivity and effectiveness, and has shown positive results. However it is <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/education/iit-roorkee-develops-inflatable-safety-helmet-for-motor-cyclists/articleshow/64736183.cms">not ready</a> for mass production yet as the team is still working to make it consumer-friendly and is also looking for industrial partnerships for its launch. As per the<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/road-accidents-in-india-2016-17-deaths-on-roads-every-hour-chennai-and-delhi-most-dangerous-4837832/"> 2016 official data</a>, 17 road accident deaths take place every hour and 27% of the total deaths involve two-wheelers. If the plan on paper is executed well, the helmet promises greater <keyword id="87280" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="road-safety">road safety</keyword> and should reduce the number of these accident deaths.

KOLKATA/MUMBAI: Where is the country’s top engineering talent heading to in a year of subdued hiring? <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> (RIL), <keyword id="43340" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Oracle">Oracle</keyword> and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> topped the hiring charts for the class of 2014, according to data from the top <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> at the end of the first phase of this placement season. 
 With 271 offers, almost a 100 more than the second-largest <keyword id="41007" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="recruiter">recruiter</keyword>, Samsung is the clear winner so far. This number includes 69 pre-placement offers (PPOs) and 28 postings in <keyword id="43918" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Korea">Korea</keyword>. 
 
The South Korean conglomerate has ramped up hiring numbers by as much as 71% from 158 last year, emerging as the biggest recruiter at the IITs so far. It had made 23 international offers last year. 
 
“We focused on campus hiring for multiple reasons — strengthening our core competency in embedded computing and building new skills/capabilities in UX design, enterprise software and data analysis,” said a Samsung spokesperson in a written response to ET. Out of 243 candidates selected for India, 211 are <keyword id="821920" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="from-software">from software</keyword> engineering and 19 from UX design. 
 RIL, another regular recruiter, made 177 offers, lower than last year’s 202. Students have been taken on in the roles of graduate <keyword id="6369183" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Engineer">engineer</keyword> trainees (GETs). 
 
“Other than some 45 PPOs, RIL has hired 132 students from 8 IITs – Delhi, Bombay, Roorkee, Kharagpur, Guwahati, Madras, Kanpur and IITBHU. In addition to this, Reliance Jio hired 5 GETs, one from IIT-Hyderabad and 4 from IIT-Indore,” said a Reliance Industries spokesperson in a written response. 
 
These numbers reflect hiring at the end of the first phase of the placement season in which roughly 50-60% of the batches have been placed across IITs. The second phase will start in the first week of January and will cover the remaining students. 
 
Tech major Oracle was another big recruiter, taking on close to 135 students across almost all IITs. While its overall campus hiring numbers remained fairly consistent over the last three years, it made a few US-based offers for the first time this year. 
 
“Oracle has a number of different business groups internally and we hire students across a variety of positions. 
 Many students will join Oracle, working in product development roles across our hardware, software or industry-specific based groups,” said a <keyword id="154054" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="company-spokesperson">company spokesperson</keyword>. 
 E-commerce major Flipkart, as reported earlier by ET, has been a big draw at the IITs during the first phase of placements. The company increased hiring from around 100 last year to 118. “Campus hiring is strategic for us. It helps us identify and bring new talent,” <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword>, co-founder, Flipkart, told ET. 
 
“Past experience has shown us that talent from tier-I colleges like the IITs and IIMs and the way they meet the challenges posed by a high-growth environment like ours has been remarkable -- and a great fit for an organisation like Flipkart that stresses on ownership and innovation,” added Bansal. 
 
Several other companies emerged as strong recruiters, according to hiring data from six of the older IITs at Bombay, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee, Kanpur and Guwahati. 
 Business process outsourcing company <keyword id="369930" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="EXL-Service">EXL Service</keyword>, for instance, made 97 offers across 7 IITs this year compared to just 46 across 5 IITs last placements. The increase in the number of campus hires in the roles of consultants and analysts is to power the company’s analytics business, which has been growing at more than 30% for the last few years.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore was ranked second in the University Rankings, globally for its research facilities. This makes IISc the first Indian institution to get nearly 100,000 citations in research papers in a span of five years. Last year, the institute was ranked sixth among the top performing Indian universities. “The Indian Higher Education system is making progress in some key areas. The sector requires more substantial, sustained and strategic investments both in research and education,” Ben Sowter, QS Research Director said. Four of the 23 prominent Indian institutions ranked, improved on the performance in the higher education sector. But seven IITs reported a drop in rank. IISc is now the world's second best research institute: QS University Rankings

 Unicorns are <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> with more than a billion-dollar valuation and the IITs have produced 12 unicorns. 
 
Sage, a UK-based accounting, and payroll company stated this in a research and reinstated the belief that the premier institution is still numero uno for attaining success. 
 
In terms of countries that are home to the most number of unicorns, US tops the list with 144 unicorns, followed by China with 47. India grabbed the third spot with 10.

However, indicating that experience literally pays, the research said those who founded more than one company have, on average, a 34.5% higher valuation than those who founded just one company ($4.29bn vs $5.88bn).

New Delhi, State-owned <keyword id="159757" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NBCC" source="Orion">NBCC</keyword> (India) Ltd has reported a 16 per cent decline in its consolidated net profit to Rs 81.90 crore for the second quarter of this fiscal due to provisioning for expected loss in a Gurugram housing project. Its net profit stood at Rs 97.72 crore in the year-ago period. The total income, however, rose to Rs 2,129.09 crore during the July-September period of 2023-24 from Rs 2073.89 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year, a regulatory filing said on Thursday. The company's consolidated net profit increased to Rs 159.31 crore in the September 2023 quarter against Rs 92.87 crore in the year-ago period. Its total income rose to Rs 4,094.90 crore in the first six months of this fiscal from Rs 3,927.13 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. A preferred partner of the government for infrastructure projects, NBCC's 93.22 per cent of business revenue comes from the PMC (project management consultancy) segment and redevelopment works on a consolidated basis. The company is also into real estate development. NBCC's profit declined during the September quarter despite a rise in the total income due to an exception item of provisioning of losses of Rs 65.39 crore. In notes of account, NBCC said that "the group has made an additional provision for expected loss of Rs 6,539.19 lakh against sale of flats/units/interest/cost of stamp duty and registration charges for execution of title deed of flats/units in the favour of group at the quarter and six months ended on September 30, 2023". The matter is related to its residential real estate project 'NBCC Green View', Sector - 37 D, Gurugram. NBCC had sold 392 units (255 flats, 126 EWS and 11 shops) out of 942 units and had received a total amount of Rs 210.12 crore, out of which Rs 159.57 crore was recognised as revenue in the previous year and Rs 40.48 crore were booked as advance from allottees till March 31, 2022. "Subsequently, the buildings in the project exhibited structural cracks. The group received many complaints and representation from some of the homebuyers. Group appointed IIT Delhi to look into the matters," the filing said. IIT Delhi, in its report dated October 6, 2021, advised that the buildings must be vacated within two months in view of the safety of the occupants and further advised to get the feasibility of repairs re-examined. Thereafter, a committee of experts from IIT Roorkee and CBRI Roorkee (Central Buildings Research Institute) was constituted for structural assessment of this project in furtherance to the report of IIT Delhi. "This expert committee opined that no repair/restoration method seems economically viable and safe in the long term. It is recommended to demolish the structure," NBCC said. Further, a review panel of two retired SDGs of CPWD was constituted, which also concurred with the recommendation given by the expert committee. "In view of the advice from the experts and considering the safety of the residents, the buildings were evacuated completely with the help of the District Administration under Disaster Management Act," NBCC said. The company, in its board meeting held on June 21, 2022, accorded the approval to settle with all the homebuyers/allottees by way of buyback of their flats/units by paying the total amount received from the allottees against the sale of flats/units amounting to Rs 210.12 crore and the cost of stamp duty and registration charges paid by them amounting to Rs 9.73 crore. Accordingly, the offer letter for the buyback of their flats/EWS units/shops was communicated to all homebuyers/allottees through posts and mails. "In view of the uninspiring response from the buyers against the first and second buyback offer of the group, the Board in its 529th meeting held on August 18, 2023, decided to reconsider the same in order to arrive at an amicable settlement," NBCC said. Accordingly, the Board of Directors has accorded in-principal approval to settle with all the homebuyers/allottees by way of buyback of their flats/units by paying the total amount received from the remaining allottees against the sale of flats/units amounting to Rs 195.39 crore and the cost of stamp duty &amp; registration charges paid by them amounting to Rs 9.11 crore and simple interest of 6 per cent per annum on the total receipts (excluding stamp duty and registration charges) amounting to Rs 105.79 crore reckoned from the date of receipt of each payment made till the approval date, August 18, 2023. In addition, Rs 12.24 crore (approximately) is estimated to be incurred towards the cost of stamp duty and registration charges for execution of title deed of flats/units in the favour of the group. "Accordingly, the group, in its submission to the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCRDC) on October 6, 2023, submitted its willingness to refund the entire amount received from complainants with simple interest at 6 per cent per annum from the date of respective deposits," NBCC said.
