This year, Vinod Gupta School of Management at <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> campus, witnessed the highest CTC offer of Rs 20 lakh. The placements showed growth in the number of recruiters, number of offers made and diversity in the roles offered. 
 A total of 40 companies visited the institute and the 2015-2017 batch strength of 82 received 100 offers so far. Companies including Amazon, British Telecommunication, <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>, Vedanta, PwC, Titan, JP Morgan and Chase, <keyword id="6358918" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deloitte">Deloitte</keyword>, Spencer's visited the campus. 
 
As of now, the average of the top 25 per cent offers stands at 16.60 lakh and that of the top 50 per cent is set at Rs. 15.31 lakh. With more companies lined up, these numbers are only expected to increase. 
 
Most of the students secured roles in Operations and Consulting, closely followed by Analytics, Sales Marketing, banking, finance and insurance. 
 
The students of VGSoM were also offered coveted roles on the field of management. This includes the roles in Leadership program in Operations, B2B Sales, Project Management, Supply Chain Management, Sales and Marketing. In addition to these, students were offered roles of Strategic Analysts, Digital Operations Consultants, Financial Analysts, Associate Traders, Pre-Sales Consultants, Wealth Managers, Program Managers and Category Managers.

The second phase will commence in January 2020. Students at IIT Delhi and Kharagpur bagged over 1,700 job offers in the <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/education/iit-kharagpur-students-bag-1000-offers-in-first-five-days-of-placement-drive-2145015">first five days</a> of placements. Of this, almost 500 were pre-placement offers and 56 were overseas offers. IIT’s Madras, Delhi and Kharagpur campuses bag over 2,500 job offers in the very first week of placements

IITs are known around the world for being one of the best engineering colleges. However, one of them will soon be recognized as the best medical college as well. 
 
After HRD ministry nod, IIT-Kharagpur is now the first among IITs to offer medicine courses to students soon. Interestingly, IIT-Kharagpur was also the first IIT to have a management school. The <keyword id="2872909" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vinod-Gupta-School-of-Management">Vinod Gupta School of Management</keyword> was started in 1993 and is often ranked among the top 20 <keyword id="112381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="business-schools">business schools</keyword> in the country. 
 
You may think why are IITs venturing into the medical domain. The idea, as per the institute, is to be a research hospital where technological developments can take place, and local patients can benefit from them. 
 Plan is to kick-start the new course by 2019 with a batch of 50 students. However, a 400-bed hospital to be set up on the campus which will act as a teaching facility, will start admitting patients from mid-2018 itself. The super-speciality hospital will include departments, such as cardiology, neurology, orthopedic, out-patient, besides a medical diagnostic centre and an emergency ward. The permission from the <keyword id="49468" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Medical-Council-of-India">Medical Council of India</keyword> will come only after this hospital starts operating. 
 
As per sources, several hospitals of repute have been approached to manage IIT-K hospital's operations. Associated doctors will have an opportunity to carry out medico-technical research. "We aim to introduce videography during treatment, with the patient's permission. This will allow us to gather information, which can be transmitted anywhere across the globe to other doctors, who can then go through the treatment procedure and records to make recommendations," said the institute deputy director. 
 Chances are medical aspirants won't have to appear for <keyword id="6361994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET">NEET</keyword>, as IIT-K plans to have a separate entrance examination. Notably, IITs are governed by a separate law, which enables them to hold their own admission exams, like for engineering courses.

World renowned IITs will no longer just be engineering institutes! They will soon offer MBBS courses too

The startup fever has now gripped faculty members of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) who are now, independently or collaboratively, coming up with their own ventures and turning entrepreneurs. 
 Faculty members of <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> from across India, including Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur and Hyderabad, are leading the trend. Nineteen startups were only from IIT Madras in 2014-15. 
 An Economic Times report quoted <keyword id="2914509" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravikrishnan-Elangovan">Ravikrishnan Elangovan</keyword> (33) who joined <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword>'s department of biochemical engineering and biotechnology as assistant professor in 2010 where he met Vivekanandan Perumal and Shalini Gupta, both of whom had also joined the institute as faculty members after their post-doctoral degrees from the US. The trio wanted to develop a solution for typhoid diagnosis, for which they put up a proposal with the department of biotechnology in 2013 and got funded. 
 
Faculty forming new companies is an integral part of the academia-entrepreneurship intersection in the US, especially in places like Stanford and MIT. But the trend is slowly gaining momentum here in India as well. 
 
As per the report published in the financial daily, IIT Madras has so far spawned 16 startups that have been founded or co-founded by its faculty members. Thirty of the 89 tech start-ups birthed at the institute have faculty members as founders or minority shareholders. 
 <keyword id="2914508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras-Incubation-Cell">IIT Madras Incubation Cell</keyword> CEO Tamaswati Ghosh said, "We are witnessing an increasing trend of joint collaboration between faculty members and their current and graduated students, with research being translated into commercial ventures/companies." 
 
At IIT Kharagpur, the first such registration for a joint venture between a faculty member and a student happened way back in 2007, such instances have gained momentum recently. "For the past two to three years, we're getting registrations from three to four such companies each year," says PP Das, head of Rajendra Mishra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship at IIT Kharagpur. One more such company — in the Internet security business — is likely to get registered next month.

After US, faculty startups are now finding their feet in India

The move came after the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC) after the reports from Empowered Expert Committee (EEC). It recommended 15 public and private institutions each for the status of IoE. However, the scheme will extend to 10 public and 10 private institutions.  The <keyword id="55119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword>, <keyword id="6357441" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kharagpur">Kharagpur</keyword>, has set up a creche within its campus to ensure that kids are looked after even when their mothers are working. Due to this step, young mothers, faculty members and non-teaching staff of IIT-Kharagpur are heaving a sigh of relief. 
 
53 happy babies have already enrolled in the facility, which was earlier a bungalow inside the campus and was remodelled to a creche. The creche-montessori playhouse-cum care-giving centre will handle babies to 10 year olds. Children going to primary schools can come directly to the care-centre for food, rest and homework, till their mothers are free to collect them. 
 
The creche has 14 support staff, including six teachers, six ayahs, one attendant and one supervisor. It opens at 7.30am and remains open till late in the evening. It is fully air-conditioned and packed with specialized Montessori teaching equipment, furniture, play area, activity zone and a computer lab. 
 IIT-Kharagpur director <keyword id="1743506" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Partha-Pratim-Chakraborty">Partha Pratim Chakraborty</keyword> said: "The creche was a crying need. We wanted our talented women on campus to put in their best but it was often difficult for them to work at their optimum leaving their babies at home."

The university rankings featured only six Indian universities in the top 500. In fact, none of them made it to the top 300 universities list. This had happened for the first time in the last seven years — despite an increase in the number of Indian institutions featuring on the list. IIT Delhi’s director too said that they are making a significant contribution to the innovation system in the country. “If Delhi NCR has the highest number of tech startups/unicorns in India, IIT Delhi has played a role in it. In total, over 215 companies from consulting, analytics, banking and finance sectors participated in the hiring. Core and banking sectors contributed almost 40% to the recruitment. The placements "comfortably passed all the previous years' record," the institute said. It crossed the threshold of 1,000 offers in the first five days — including 41 international opportunities. Nearly 19 offers came from the public sector undertakings (PSUs). “This has been the fastest 1,000 offers to date, and in fact a day ahead of last year,” GP Raja Sekhar, head of All IIT Placement Committee <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/education/iits-end-first-week-of-placements-on-a-high-note-beating-last-year-s-show-119120901247_1.html">told</a> Business Standard. In fact, the oldest IIT at Kharagpur bagged five offers exceeding ₹1 crore per annum, on the very first day of the final placement season. More than half of the job offers at IIT Kharagpur came from the software and analytics sectors

<ul><li><keyword id="55119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IITs) had 2,400 dropout cases in the last two years. </li><li>A majority of them were at the postgraduate or PhD level. </li><li>Almost half (50%) of the dropouts were from Delhi and Kharagpur campuses. </li><li>IITs enroll nearly 17,000 students in its undergraduate and postgraduate courses every year.</li></ul>As many as 2,461 students dropped out of <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/education/over-2-400-dropout-from-iits-since-2017-47-6-are-sc-st-obc-2076985">Indian Institute of Technology (IITs)</a> in the last two years. And, a majority of them were pursuing either postgraduate courses or doctoral programmes. “The reasons may be attributed to shifting to other colleges, personal reasons, medical reasons, placement during PG courses and pursuing higher education abroad,” Union minister <keyword id="60487" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh-Pokhriyal">Ramesh Pokhriyal</keyword> Nishank told the Rajya Sabha during a recent session in the Parliament. Every year, the IITs enroll 17,000 students across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Bad health, bad grades The undergraduates are dropping out due to poor academic performance and medical reasons. Almost half of the students, 1,400 of them, who quit are from <keyword id="6354859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIt">IIT</keyword>’s Delhi and Kharagpur campuses. Masters students however could be quitting as they are being offered jobs at state-owned firms, especially in Delhi. “On some occasions, we saw 60 students drop out from an M.Tech batch of 80. Then, we were forced to run the programme with just 20 students,” The Print <a href="https://theprint.in/india/education/2400-students-dropped-out-of-iits-in-2-years-nearly-half-were-sc-st-obc/268626/">reported</a> citing Dheeraj Sanghi, a professor at IIT Kanpur. At least half of the students who dropped out, 1,171 students were reserved categories including SCs, STs and OBCs. At IIT Bombay, all of its 260 dropouts were from the reserved quota. Over 2,400 students dropped out of India’s most prestigious IITs  in last two years

<keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> is clearly going the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/4-qualities-McKinsey-looks-for-in-candidates-during-interviews/articleshow/52007951.cms">McKinsey</a> way at <keyword id="1473422" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-placements">IIT placements</keyword> this year, and it's not going down too well with many IITs. 
 
The search giant, which offers 1-2 crore salary packages for international postings, is on every IITian's mind every year. But what comes as a bad news is that the company has sought to be excluded from the campus placement process in all IITs except Bombay and Delhi. 
 
It has not taken the step because it wants to cut down on hiring, but because it wants to opt for a different route. Testimony to this is the fact that the company and students have already started reaching out to each other directly, as per confirmed sources.

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/9-tough-questions-Google-Apple-Facebook-ask-in-interviews/articleshow/51454056.cms">Google is clearly eyeing direct recruitments</a> of students it finds worthy without involving the schools. This saves the company both, the time and effort, spent in going to campuses. Such off-campus hiring is, however, discouraged by the IITs because it ends up in a scattered arrangement for students. When Google informed IITs that it wanted to go off-campus, not all of them had any choice but to accept the internal company decision. Bombay and Delhi, however, are believed to have a different process in place due to which the company agreed to visit these campuses for hiring. 
 
Last year, Google hired about 20 candidates from the five older IITs (Delhi, Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur and Madras). It's not clear how many IITians they will pick up this time, as the company has declined to comment on placements. 
 Interestingly, <keyword id="6372399" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="McKinsey">McKinsey</keyword> also went off campus last year for its <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> recruitment during final placements. It did not recruit a single student from any campus, unlike Google which will be on the Bombay and Delhi campus in the coming few weeks. However, the management consultant did recruit about 10 IIT Delhi graduates through its alumni network, website and social media.

Why getting into Google is going to be a hell of a task for IITians this year

The Indian Institutes of Technology (<keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword>) are one of the best institutes in India and the history of these institutions date back to 1946. The first IIT was set up in 1951 in Kharagpur. 
 
Since then, a number of IIT campuses mushroomed in different parts of the country such as IIT Bombay was set up in 1958, IIT Madras in 1959, IIT Kanpur in 1959 and IIT Delhi in 1961. The newest IIT has come up in Dhanbad as Indian School of Mines at Dhanbad was conferred with IIT status in 2016. 
 
Each IIT campus reflects a different ideology, geography, culture, rankings and thought process and each of them is fighting to get the number one spot. 
 
Now, link this to the popular American TV series Game of Thrones! Yes, there are striking similarities between IITs and Game of Thrones.
