A team of researchers from the <keyword id="55119" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-institute-of-technology" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (<keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword>), <keyword id="6357478" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kanpur" source="Orion">Kanpur</keyword>, has developed a novel technology that turns ACs into affordable air purifiers. Researchers from the <keyword id="108320" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-kanpur" source="Orion">IIT Kanpur</keyword> and IISc Bengaluru developed an anti-microbial air purification technology which was used by air filters, according to an official report. "The novel air purification technology used in these air filters has successfully proven its efficiency towards protecting us from life-threatening viruses. This innovation is a great addition to the R&amp;D work IIT Kanpur is involved in," Ankush Sharma, Professor-in-charge of <keyword id="14935950" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="innovation-and-incubation" source="Orion">Innovation and Incubation</keyword>, IIT Kanpur said in a statement. In the winter, an air conditioner equipped with this innovative air filter system from IIT Kanpur can purify the air with a 99 per cent filtration efficiency, said the report. "This indigenous revolutionary innovation has tremendous potential to succeed in the global market. This launch is indicative of technology catering to critical world problems," Amitabha Bandyopadhyay, Co-Professor-in-charge of Innovation and Incubation, IIT Kanpur said in a statement. This new type of air filter has proven to restrict microbial growth and is capable of capturing PM 2.5, PM 10, dust, pollen, allergens and germs from the air while purifying, the report added. IIT Kanpur researcher develops technology to turn ACs into air purifiers

Rakesh Gangwal, co-founder of budget carrier IndiGo and an <keyword id="108320" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-kanpur" source="Orion">IIT Kanpur</keyword> alumnus, has made a personal donation of Rs 100 crore to support the School of Medical Sciences and Technology at his alma mater. <keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword> <keyword id="6357478" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kanpur" source="Orion">Kanpur</keyword> Director Abhay Karandikar confirmed this in a series of tweets. "Here is big news from IIT Kanpur. In an extraordinary gesture, our alumnus Rakesh Gangwal, co-founder of IndiGo airlines has made one of the largest personal donations with a Rs 100 crore contribution focused on supporting the School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur," Karandikar tweeted. Gangwal has also signed a pact with IIT Kanpur to set up a school of Medical Sciences and Technology on the IIT Kanpur campus. He also donated Rs 100 crore for the purpose. The IndiGo co-founder will also soon join the Advisory Board of the institution. Gangwal told reporters, "It is a privilege to be associated with such a noble endeavour with my alma mater. I am proud to see that the institution that has produced thousands of leaders across various sectors is now paving the way in the healthcare sector. More than ever, healthcare is intertwined with technological advances and this school will accelerate innovation in healthcare." This school will be completed in two phases. The first phase will include setting up a 500-bed super-specialty hospital, academic block, residential/hostel and service block with a total built-up area of around 8, 10,000 square feet. It will also involve setting up Centres of Excellence (CoE) for pursuing R&amp;D activities in futuristic medicine and is tentatively planned to be completed over 3-5 years. The second phase is planned to be completed in 7-10 years and will see the hospital capacity to grow to 1,000 beds. It will also involve expanding clinical departments/centres, research areas, the inclusion of paramedical disciplines, alternative medicine, hospital management, sports medicine and public health programmes. Former student and Indigo cofounder Rakesh Gangwal gifts  ₹100 crore to IIT-Kanpur

"In the first eight days, the institute received 47 international offers. This is a big jump of 150 per cent over last year when 19 international offers were received. The highest packages so far are USD 274,250 for international and ₹1.2 crore for domestic," an official statement said. IIT Kanpur gets 49 offers above ₹1 crore

The Indian Institute of Technology, <keyword id="6357478" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kanpur" source="Orion">Kanpur</keyword>, has developed a course on drone technology that would be taught at IITs, other technical institutes and skill development centres in the country. The course has been designed on the directives of the Union ministry of electronics and information technology. The ministry sees drone technology from the perspective of the future and believes the move would help in quality supply of specialists in this field. "This is why the ministry has undertaken this task of taking drone technology to students at the macro-level," said a faculty member. The task of designing the course was bestowed on two scientists of aero-space engineering -- <keyword id="13980376" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dr-abhishek" source="Orion">Dr Abhishek</keyword> and Mangal Kothari. The duo has developed a two-year degree course in which theory and practical would be of equal importance. The course also includes new technologies in making drones. Dr Abhishek said the course had been designed keeping in mind the developing needs and the students. The course would shortly be introduced in the academic institutions. The <keyword id="108320" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-kanpur" source="Orion">IIT Kanpur</keyword> has been a pioneer in the drone development programme. The scientists have come up with the smallest of drones equipped with cutting edge technologies apart from doing extensive research. The Uttar Pradesh government has planned to set up a centre of excellence for drone development at IIT Kanpur. The best drones from IIT Kanpur include Alakh that weighs just 225 grams. It has been developed for the armed forces for surveillance purposes. Drone named 'Gauraiya' appears like a sparrow and weighs 239 grams. It has proved its worth in hills and mountains. Hawk is a powerhouse of 300 grams, can fly for 25 minutes and sends live footage in an area of 2 km. The Auto-Pilot is armed with artificial intelligence and this drone sends all the data to the control room even if it has crashed. The Agri-drone monitors the crop, sprinkles pesticides and makes useful suggestions. IIT Kanpur develops drone technology course for IITs, tech institutes & skill development centres

IITian minds are known for coming up with some brilliant <keyword id="6433408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="innovations">innovations</keyword>. The newest is a set of three smart multi-function <keyword id="6370270" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="unmanned-aerial-vehicles">unmanned aerial vehicles</keyword> by IIT-Kanpur students and professors which seem to have swept the <keyword id="43853" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-military">Indian military</keyword> off their feet even before they have had a glimpse of it. 
 
Professors here say that a defence team is likely to visit the institute soon to see a demonstration of these UAVs. They are contemplating its use in surveillance in insurgency-hit areas as well as in battlefields for various operations. 
 
Cheaper than those currently being sourced from foreign countries, these UAVs are fitted with electro-optical and thermal cameras and are ready for mass production.

SWATI - Silent Watch Aircraft For Tactical Intelligence 
Running on either fuel or batteries, it requires a small runway of only 50 to 80 meters and can keep an eye on 100 km radius. It can stay in air for about eight hours when using petrol and for four hours with batteries. 
 
AMITA - Autonomous Man-packable Intelligent Tactical Aircraft 
This does not require a runaway, can be hand-launched and weighs just six to eight kgs. It can remain in the air for more than three hours. 
 
The third UAV is still in process. It's prototype has been developed. 75% of the power requirements of this UAV is met by solar energy, thus increasing its endurance. It's bigger in size and can get charged while flying. 
 
The credit for these innovations goes to Prof Philip who has worked on the development of these UAVs along with Prof AK Ghosh, Prof Nischal Verma, Prof Satyaki Roy and 30 other students from IIT Kanpur.

3 Hi-Tech drones by IIT Kanpur students and professors that may become a part of Indian Military operations soon

Just a few days after Delhi was declared a 'gas chamber' choking its own citizens, now the western city of Lucknow is going through its worst phase of consistent bad air quality. While residents have been requesting the government to devise a way to curn the unrelenting smog, <keyword id="108320" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kanpur">IIT Kanpur</keyword> researchers already seem to have a plan - creating <keyword id="1116741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Artificial-Rains">artificial rains</keyword> through cloud-seeding. It’s a practice of artificially inducing or increasing precipitation through clouds by adding external agents. This stimulation is done by aeroplanes or rockets. Pollution levels in several cities of the north western state of Uttar Pradesh were recently declared ‘dangerously polluted’. Varanasi was declared the most polluted city in the country. A report by the <keyword id="67999" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Pollution-Control-Board">Central Pollution Control Board</keyword> (CPCB) has found that the air quality of holy city Varanasi is most polluted among the 42 cities monitored recently. Following this, the Director of IIT Kanpur, Manindra Agarwal told the media that the state government has asked the civil aviation ministry for its approval regarding artificial rains since the area where artificial rains are required need cloud cover. IIT Kanpur was given a grant of Rs 15 lakh from the state government to experiment on the option of artificial rains. The scientists have finished their experiments and are ready to execute. The UP residents therefore will soon see airplanes flying over Lucknow to create artificial rains to bring down the pollution levels. IIT-K has even agreed to modify its six-seater Cessna aircraft to load it with salt for being dropped on the high altitude 'supercooled' clouds. “The measure will definitely reduce air pollution levels. Aerospace, civil engineering and industrial management engineering departments are working on this project,” said Agarwal. How far will this help bring the pollution levels down in Uttar Pradesh, and the rest of the country is being questioned by human rights organisations across India.

How IIT Kanpur scientists are planning to curb pollution in Uttar Pradesh

Researchers at the <keyword id="55119" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-institute-of-technology" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (<keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword>) <keyword id="6357478" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kanpur" source="Orion">Kanpur</keyword> on Tuesday announced the development of a bio-inspired artificial muscle for next-generation space robots and medical prostheses. Encouraged by the industry demand and growth in the field of miniature, light weight, non-magnetic gear-free actuators, shape memory alloy (<keyword id="12038666" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sma" source="Orion">SMA</keyword>) based actuators have emerged with an excellent power-to-weight ratio as a suitable alternative to the conventional actuators. However, existing SMA actuators have limited scope in terms of higher force or torque output due to the relatively simple architecture of the actuation mechanism. To address this limitation, the team from <keyword id="5019091" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="smart-materials" source="Orion">Smart Materials</keyword>, Structures and Systems (SMSS) Lab at <keyword id="108320" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-kanpur" source="Orion">IIT Kanpur</keyword> expanded the design space of the SMA actuator by leveraging the characteristics of bi-pennate muscle architecture with about 70 per cent enhanced muscle force output per unit weight. This will result in the creation of a new class of space robots which will , the team wrote in the paper published in <keyword id="3686694" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nature-scientific-reports" source="Orion">Nature Scientific Reports</keyword>. "This invention will not only result in the development of next-gen space robots and medical prostheses, but will also help aviation and some other industries. In a way, it will help make multiple sectors self-reliant and more advanced in the long run," said Prof. <keyword id="5413559" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="abhay-karandikar" source="Orion">Abhay Karandikar</keyword>, Director at IIT Kanpur in a statement. The primary goal of an actuator is to generate mechanical output, such as force and displacement, by transforming electrical energy. SMAs are a class of smart materials that can restore their shape after being exposed to high temperatures. The interesting property of the customisable multi-stage hierarchy of the SMA-based bio-inspired muscle design will also encourage researchers in the domain of bio-mechatronics to develop adaptive robotic prostheses for bio-medical application in the country. This will significantly reduce (one third of the current cost) the cost of bio-medical devices and increase the affordability of high performance systems like MRI scanner, CT scanner and surgical robots. The technology will also enable development of patient rooms with low maintenance and quieter operation. IIT Kanpur develops bio-inspired artificial muscle for space robots to boost Indian space technology

Kanpur, The Indian Institute of Technology (<keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword>) in Kanpur has licensed a pioneering technology to Reliance Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd. that has the potential to revolutionise the field of <keyword id="68640" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gene-therapy" source="Orion">gene therapy</keyword>, especially for many genetic eye diseases. There are many inherited disorders caused by a faulty gene. 'Gene Therapy' is a way to replace the faulty gene with a functional version of the gene to treat such disorders. This marks the first time that a gene therapy related technology has been developed and transferred from an academic institution to a company in India. The gene therapy technology from IIT Kanpur will be further developed as an Indigenous Product by Reliance Life Sciences, said an official release from IIT-K. Developed by Prof Jayandharan <keyword id="16753139" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="giridhara-rao" source="Orion">Giridhara Rao</keyword> and <keyword id="4120902" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shubham-maurya" source="Orion">Shubham Maurya</keyword> from the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE), IIT Kanpur, the patented technology modifies the gene of an organism to treat a hereditary disorder. In this case, the site refers to a specific location on an Adeno-associated virus (AAV) (viral vector) used for gene therapy. The technology modifies this location to optimize its ability to deliver genes to the affected cells and improve its effectiveness. The technology has the ability to improve gene therapy for many hereditary diseases, especially inherited eye diseases. It has shown significant promise in correcting the vision impairment in animal models of blindness. <keyword id="9701732" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prof-abhay-karandikar" source="Orion">Prof Abhay Karandikar</keyword>, Director of IIT Kanpur, said, "Gene therapy using viral vectors has recently emerged as a potent tool in the field of molecular medicine. We believe that this technology holds great promise for treating a wide range of hereditary eye diseases including Leber congenital amaurosis, an eye disorder that is present from birth; and Retinitis pigmentosa, a disease causing progressive sustained vision loss." Gene therapy is one of the most potent applications of recombinant DNA technology wherein pieces of DNA from multiple sources are combined to efficiently deliver the healthy copy of the faulty gene in a manner that production of protein from the introduced gene is sustained for life. To enable this, the therapeutic DNA molecule is delivered using a virus that can infect human cells. For successful clinical application, several optimizations of the basic process is needed aimed at ensuring adequate expression of the desired gene. IIT Kanpur licenses gene therapy to Reliance Life Sciences

New Delhi, May 8 () IIT Kanpur-incubated start-up Nocca Robotics has developed an ICU-grade ventilator customised for handling coronavirus patients which will cost less than one-tenth of a high-end imported ventilator, the company's co-founder claimed on Friday. The company plans to start shipment of the indigenously-developed ventilator from May-end or by the first week of June, IIT Kanpur incubation centre in-charge Amitabha Bandyopadhyaya, who is also co-founder of Nocca Robotics, told ."IIT Kanpur and Nocca Robotics have signed an agreement with defence public sector company Bharat Dynamics for manufacturing the ventilators on a not-for-profit basis for India initially which is expected to be available for about Rs 1.5 lakh per unit," Bandyopadhyaya said.The price of imported ventilators starts from Rs 8 lakh and goes up to as high as Rs 25 lakh a unit, he said.Nocca Robotics co-founder Nikhil Kurele said the company has kept safety and security of health workers as a top-most priority while developing a ventilator specially to treat coronavirus patients. "We found that when a virus-infected patient on a ventilator breathes out, he exhales air filled with virus loads. This exhaled air fills the ICU with coronavirus which is hazardous for health workers. In our ventilator we have made ultraviolet filter chambers, which kill viruses, and placed filters thereafter to free the exhaled air from viruses," Kurele said. He said that doctors and medical professionals were taken on board to design the ventilator as per Indian requirements and to understand the challenges around coronavirus. "We analysed 5-6 high-end ventilators that are mostly preferred by big hospitals but did not find filters in them to clear virus load. We found ventilators in use have not been designed to handle virus infection of this scale," Kurele said.He said that the ventilator can be used both in ICU as well as ported out to handle patients in other locations like trains etc."It is portable. The ventilator can work for 4 hours on battery as well," Kurele said. IIT Kanpur and Nocca Robotics have started testing the ventilators. "From May 12, the testing will start in two Pune hospitals. These ventilators will also go through UL and TUV testings. This is critical medical equipment. Therefore testing and strong standards are of paramount importance. We expect it to be available either by end of May or first week of June. We expect to reach 10,000 units production by the end of July," Bandyopadhyaya said. He said that if more demand comes then the production will be raised up to 30,000 units by August.Nocca Robotics has also onboard Indian medical device makers Avi Healthcare and Polybond for the manufacturing of ventilators. Indian startup plans to ship COVID-19 ventilator from May-end

Dr Rakesh K Jain, an IIT-Kanpur alumnus and professor of tumor biology at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Harvard Medical School, will receive the National Medal of Science at a White House ceremony early next year. 
 
Jain is among the nine latest recipients of the National Medal of Science. Eight persons have been chosen for the latest National Medal of Technology and Innovation. 
 
The White House yesterday announced the recipients of the National Medal of Science and National Medal of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Technology+">Technology</a> and Innovation, America's highest honors for achievement and leadership in advancing the fields of science and technology. 
 
"Science and technology are fundamental to solving some of our Nation's biggest challenges.  Jain has received numerous awards for his work on tumor biology, particularly research on the link between tumor blood vessels and improving the effects of <keyword id="6410172" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="chemotherapy">chemotherapy</keyword> and <keyword id="3182062" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="radiation-treatment">radiation treatment</keyword>. 
 
He received his B.Tech degree from the IIT-Kanpur in Chemical Engineering in 1972. 
 
The National Medal of Science was created by statute in 1959 and is administered for the White House by the National Science Foundation. Awarded annually, the Medal recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to science and engineering.

From dealing with the inhibitions of the home owners to the risk of being overcharged by the brokers, a bachelor has to go through a string of such ‘trials’ in order to find a decent place to live. 
	 
	Having gone through a similar situation, three such individuals came together to launch a company that specifically serves the accommodation needs of bachelors and single working professionals in the cities. 
	 “We incorporated Ziffy <keyword id="41366" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="homes">Homes</keyword> in November 2015 and immediately we received several queries,” said Salil Agarwal, a serial entrepreneur and the co-founder of the home rental services. The company not only provides accommodation but also ensures that they are fully furnished with other necessary equipment such as geyser, ACs, refrigerators among others. The other two founders include investment banker Saurabh Kumar and management consultant, Sanchal Ranjan. 
	 
	“We reached out to our alma mater--IIT Kanpur and NIT Suratkal to validate the problem with fresh graduates, who would be soon relocating to metro cities. The responses were no different from what we have experienced long back in their career timelines,” he added. 
	The company primarily ties up with different local rental services and offers a customized package to the end consumer. Currently, the company’s profit margin is Rs 2,000 on every transaction. 
	 
	“It’s a bootstrap company with an initial funding of Rs 40 lakh from the founders. We plan to raise funds this year and are already in advance talks with some of the biggest investors in the realty sector,” Agarwal said. 
	 
	The company aims to expand in five cities—Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad and is currently present in Delhi-NCR. Agarwal tells BI India that the company already has over 100 units and the occupancy rate is a whopping 97%. 
	 
	“Within single visit home owner and brand ZiffyHomes can break the deal on the standard procedures that we have kept uniform across locations, and the brand ensures rental assurance thereafter. Ziffy Homes brings a unique proposition while incentivizing the existing broker network to scale the operations at a much faster pace and extrapolate our brand presence,” he added.
