India has left behind the US to become the world's third largest <keyword id="170160" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="steel-producer">steel producer</keyword>, Union Minister of Steel and Mines <keyword id="6382481" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Singh-Tomar">Narendra Singh Tomar</keyword> said while addressing a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his ministry. 
 
By 2025, the government has fixed a target of 300 million tonnes production capacity and steel ministry is working out an action plan and strategies to achieve this target, the minister said. 
 
"So far India was the 4th largest steel producer in the world only after China, Japan and the US. However, during the first five months of this calendar year, India has achieved the 3rd position in the global steel production," said Tomar . 
 He elaborated that Indian <keyword id="34559" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="steel-industry">steel industry</keyword> is growing at a reasonably good pace and last year the growth in crude steel production in India is more than 8%. 
 
According to Tomar, Indian steel industry is already in expansion mode. The older steel plants are being modernised and expanded. New green field plants are also coming with state-of-the-art technologies. 
 He further said that recently <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> had dedicated the India's largest Blast Furnace of 4160 cubic meter, installed at SAIL's <keyword id="1497976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="iisco-steel">IISCO Steel</keyword> plant at Burnpur and several Blast Furnaces of around 4000 cubic meter with world class efficiency parameters are in the operation in the country. 
 
On Research and Development to sustain the long-term growth of the Indian steel industry, the minister asserted that the problems in raw material area need to be addressed to utilise low-grade ore and high ash coal through R&amp;D and technology interventions. Tomar also emphasised on the need to pursue R&amp;D for development of value added products for which we are dependent on import.

<ul><li><keyword id="107980" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ASANSOL">Asansol</keyword> and Durgapur will go to vote in the phase 4 of the general elections. </li><li>From Asansol, there’s star studded fight between <keyword id="6721" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="babul-Supriyo">Babul Supriyo</keyword> (BJP) and <keyword id="24743" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Moon-Moon-sen">Moon Moon Sen</keyword> (TMC). </li><li>In Durgapur, BJP is trying hard to win a seat with party stalwart SS Ahluwalia. </li></ul>As India begins its fourth phase of polling, two of not just <keyword id="6357783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="West-bengal">West Bengal</keyword> but India’s earliest industrial destinations head to vote. Asansol and Durgapur, the cities which still hold memoirs from the old school British era, used to be the economy’s powerhouses on their own. The cities are home to two steel plants of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) – Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) and IISCO Steel Plant (ISP), and a subsidiary – Alloy Steel Plant in Durgapur – some of the oldest steel plants and largest manufacturers of steel in the country. IISCO is the country’s oldest integrated steel plant. The SAIL plants have been the focus of modernization in the state. But the Indian government had <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/govt-shelves-plan-for-strategic-sale-of-sails-durgapur-alloy-steels-plant-3540461.html">plans</a> to sell the Alloy Steel Plant as a part of a strategic disinvestment. However, the sale has currently been deferred. As economic fortunes fade, the highlight of the 2019 election in this industrial belt, with joblessness and hopelessness, is the clash between two spent stars from the film world. In Asansol, incumbent MP Babul Supriyo from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who <a href="https://www.huffingtonpost.in/entry/moon-moon-sen-repeat-her-bankura-magic-in-asansol_in_5cc28f66e4b0817069670e75">won</a> by a majority of 70,000 votes, this time faces Bengal’s favourite – Moon Moon Sen from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). TMC has <a href="https://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-asansol-lok-sabha-constituency-candidates-for-2019-ls-poll-past-results-all-updates-2743974">never</a> won a seat from Asansol. Sen, who entered politics during the last general elections in 2014, had defeated CPI(M)’s Basudeb Acharia from Bankura, a constituency from where Acharia had won 9 times. Meanwhile, in Durgapur the sitting MP from TMC Mamtaz Sanghamita faces a tough competition from SS Ahluwalia, BJP’s long standing leader who currently has a seat in the Lok Sabha from Darjeeling. And there’s also a lot at stake. Asansol has been a victim of communal violence, after riots erupted in March 2018 on Ram Navami. Even today, the violence is at the <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/communal-divide-to-the-fore-in-asansol/article26960631.ece">core </a>of political campaigning in the city. The other issue that bothers the region is jobs. Illegal mining, which is common in the area, has been put to a stop during the elections, putting thousands of miners out of jobs. According to a <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/with-curb-on-illegal-mining-out-of-job-miners-in-west-bengal-mull-nota-119042800233_1.html">PTI report</a>, these miners will be voting NOTA as a sign of protest. Sail’ing in history Famous for being the industrial zones of West Bengal, the two cities, which are less than 50 kilometres away from each other, house two steel plants of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) – Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) and IISCO Steel Plant (ISP). And they are rich in history too. Queen Elizabeth had visited the Durgapur Steel Plant in 1961. While the Durgapur Steel Plant has a production capacity of 1.8 Million Ton Per Annum (MTPA), the IISCO Steel Plant has a capacity for production of 4.26 lakh tonnes of saleable steel and 2.54 lakh tonnes of pig iron annually, according to the official website. From then to now, the two steel plants have been a part of many historical things in India – including being one of the biggest suppliers of steel to the defence in India. The Durgapur steel plant recently made <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/sail-supplies-steel-for-indian-armys-dhanush/articleshow/68809831.cms">news</a> for supplying steel to the Indian army to make the first homegrown artillery gun Dhanush. Asansol and Durgapur are also home to many other private industries’ manufacturing units. New Delhi, Nov 27 () State-owned SAIL on Wednesday said it has asked management at all its units to improve efficiency and focus on reducing cost of production.
 In a statement, Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) said the move is part of 'Cost Control Drive' at all its plants and units.
 "The company has given renewed thrust on aggressive cost control in the company. (It) not only aims to improve efficiency but also to give a lasting competitive advantage. All the plants and units of the company are working on a mission mode to reduce the cost of production with the guiding principle 'Do More With Less'," SAIL Chairman Anil Kumar Chaudhary said in a statement.
 The company is also organising a series of workshops at all the plants and units to evolve action plans for improving operations and operational efficiency through enhanced production and better techno-economic performances, better utilisation of raw materials and enhancing revenue generation through other means, he said.
 Executives from different units have been grouped into cross-functional teams and tasked to formulate strategies to improve the techno-economic parameters and other cost-related aspects across the organisation, he added.
 According to its website, SAIL has five integrated steel plants -- Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh, Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha, Bokaro Steel Plant in Jharkhand, and Durgapur Steel Plant and IISCO Steel Plant in West Bengal.

SAIL asks units to improve efficiency, reduce production cost

New Delhi, Jan 8 () Thousands of workers at state-owned steel plants boycotted work while some remained absent in protest against the government policies, according to SWFI, the apex body of steel workers in India.
 However, operations remained unaffected at the plants.
 The impact of strike was minimal on Coal India too.
 The protest was against privatisation of public sector companies, change in labour laws, low wages for contactual workers and other issues, Steel Workers Federation of India (SWFI) Working President P K Das told over phone.
 "The strike was observed at some plants. Some boycotted work and some remained absent," he said.
 A SAIL official said production remained unaffected as workers in the night shift stayed back at the plants resulting in 100 per cent attendance in the 6 AM to 2 PM shift.
 Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has about 70,000 employees. It has five integrated steel plants namely Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh, Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha, Bokaro Steel Plant in Jharkhand and Durgapur Steel Plant and IISCO Steel Plant in West Bengal.
 Besides, it has three special steel units in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal and a ferro alloy plant in Maharashtra.
 An official of another steel PSU Rashtriya Ispat Nigam (RINL) said while all executives came to work, 80 per cent workers boycotted work.
 There are about 18,000 employees in RINL, out of which about 6,000 are executives, the RINL official said.
 According to a Coal India official, there was 89 per cent attendance (as of 2 pm ) at all the subsidiaries of the coal major.
 Coal India accounts for over 80 per cent of the domestic coal output.

The constituency of Asansol saw a star-studded fight with Moonmoon Sen from the Trinamool Congress and Babul Supriyo from the Bharatiya Janata Party. The exit polls had shown that incumbent MP Supriyo will lose the fight from his constituency. However, initial trends show that Supriyo is leading to regain power from the constituency. But the fight to the finish wasn’t all that starry. While mudslinging in politics is usual, Asansol was a constituency that was in the spotlight for having been a victim of communal violence. Riots had erupted in March 2018 on Ram Navami. Even today, the violence is at the <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/communal-divide-to-the-fore-in-asansol/article26960631.ece">core </a>of political campaigning in the city. Workers from TMC and BJP had a clash on polling day on April 29 with incumbent BJP MP Supriyo’s car vandalized during the clash. However, that’s not all. The Election Commission had also registered a case against Supriyo for having a heated argument with polling officials and forcibly entering a voting booth. After the violence, the BJP had also requested for re-polls in parts of Asansol. The industrial area of Asansol, along with neighbouring Durgapur, is one of India’s premier industrial zones and house two steel plants of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) – Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) and IISCO Steel Plant (ISP).
