New Delhi, India's industrial production growth perked up slightly to 5.2 per cent in January from 4.7 per cent in December 2022, mainly due to good performance of the power, mining and manufacturing sectors, according to official data released on Friday. There was an improvement on an annual as well as sequential basis. The factory output growth measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) stood at two per cent in January 2022. As per the IIP data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the manufacturing sector's output grew 3.7 per cent in January 2023 from 1.9 per cent a year ago. <keyword id="864464" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mining-output" source="Orion">Mining output</keyword> rose 8.8 per cent during the month under review compared to 3 per cent in January 2022. Power generation also surged 12.7 per cent in January 2023 against 0.9 per cent in the year-ago month. As per use-based classification, the capital goods segment recorded a growth of 11 per cent in January against a growth of 1.8 per cent in the corresponding month of the last fiscal. Consumer durables output declined by 7.5 per cent compared to a contraction of 4.4 per cent a year ago. Consumer non-durable goods output expanded by 6.2 per cent against a growth of 3.1 per cent earlier. Infrastructure/construction goods too posted a growth of 8.1 per cent compared to a 5.9 per cent expansion in the same month of 2022. The data also showed that the output of primary goods logged 9.6 per cent growth in the month against 1.6 per cent in the year-ago period. The intermediate goods output growth decelerated to 0.1 per cent from 2.5 per cent earlier. For the first 10 months of the current fiscal (April-January), the growth in IIP works out to be 5.4 per cent, down from 13.7 per cent in the year-ago period.

According to the Index of Industrial Production (<keyword id="6427912" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="iip">IIP</keyword>) data released by the <keyword id="7734679" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Statistical-Office">National Statistical Office</keyword> (<keyword id="2501810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSO">NSO</keyword>), the manufacturing sector's output surged by 13 per cent in June 2021. The mining output climbed 23.1 per cent and power generation increased by 8.3 per cent in June. The IIP had contracted 16.6 per cent in June 2020. During April-June this year, the IIP grew by 45 per cent against a contraction of 35.6 per cent in the same quarter last year. Industrial production has been hit due to the coronavirus pandemic since March last year when it had contracted 18.7 per cent. It shrank 57.3 per cent in April 2020 due to a decline in economic activities in the wake of the lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus infections. India's manufacturing sector grows by 13% in June, according to NSO data

<keyword id="19896016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-delhi" source="keywords">New Delhi</keyword>, <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s industrial production grew 3.8 per cent in January 2024, according to official data released on Tuesday. <keyword id="6428111" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Factory-output" source="Orion">Factory output</keyword> measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) witnessed a growth of 5.8 per cent in January 2023. "India's Index of Industrial Production grows by 3.8 per cent in January 2024," an official statement said. The data released by the <keyword id="20070866" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-statistical-office" source="keywords">National Statistical Office</keyword> (<keyword id="20067517" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nso" source="keywords">NSO</keyword>) showed that the manufacturing sector's output grew 3.2 per cent in January 2024, down from 4.5 per cent in the year-ago month. In January this year, mining production rose 5.9 per cent, and power output increased 5.6 per cent. The IIP grew 5.9 per cent during April 2023 to January 2024 compared to a 5.5 per cent expansion in the year-ago period.

India's industrial production grows 3.2% in October

(Eds: Combining related stories) New Delhi, Mar 12 () India's factory output showed a marginal rise in January, while retail inflation eased to a two-month low in February, paving the way for RBI to cut interest rate to boost the economy that may be losing steam due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew by 2 per cent in January against 1.6 per cent a year back, displaying moderate green shoots, official data released on Thursday showed. According to the data from the National Statistical Office (NSO), the manufacturing sector output grew by 1.5 per cent as compared with a rise of 1.3 per cent in the corresponding month a year ago. However, going forward, the February factory output may be impacted as several industries such as automobiles, technology, pharma and fashion have some exposure to imports of raw and intermediate materials from China. Retail inflation eased to 6.58 per cent in February, from 7.59 per cent in the previous month, but remained above the Reserve Bank of India's target band of 4 per cent, plus or minus 2 per cent. Manufacturing, which is the largest component of IIP having 77.6 per cent weight, continues to be down. It grew at 1.5 per cent in January 2020 and just 0.3 per cent for the first 10 months of current fiscal. As per use-based classification, out of six sectors four -- namely capital goods, infrastructure/construction goods, consumer durables and consumer non-durables -- recorded negative growth in January 2020. CPI inflation in February reversed six months of increasing trend mainly due to base effect and sequential decline in food price inflation as well as a dip in transport and communication inflation. Core inflation, a measure of demand conditions in the economy, also reversed after increasing for three months and came in at 4.08 per cent in February. Between Q1 FY19 and Q3 FY20, core inflation declined to 3.6 per cent from 6.2 per cent and GDP growth declined to 4.7 per cent from 7.1 per cent. "The news of improvement in industrial activity in January and ease in inflation in February comes as a relief amid the epidemic crisis and economic slowdown and global health crises. The data does not capture the impact of the sharp decline in oil prices on inflation is not captured either," said Rumki Majumdar, Economist, Deloitte India. With the epidemic spreading fast in Europe and the US, a slowdown in these economies will impact the global demand for industrial and manufactured goods. "However, one can only hope that inflation may come down further in March as oil prices are expected to remain low for a while now. This opens up room for further monetary policy stimulus. The RBI may cut policy rates in the upcoming MPC meeting as a pre-emptive measure to offset the impact of the epidemic on demand," Majumdar said. The factory output growth even during FY19 was weak but it remained in the positive territory and averaged 3.8 per cent. In FY20, however, the variation in the factory output growth has increased and is fluctuating between positive and negative territory quite frequently, demonstrating that instability in the factory output has increased. India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) said a sustained weakness in factory output month after month means that recovery on the industrial front is unlikely in the near term and now with the adverse impact of Covid-19 looming large it will get more prolonged. India Ratings said globally a number of economies have either given or planning to give both monetary and fiscal stimulus to overcome this crisis. Some impacts such as the collapsed global crude prices may be favourable for India and boost consumer demand and also impact central government fiscal arithmetic positively, as excise duty on oil products is now a specific duty. "However, many states have increased VAT on petroleum products and this may limit the pass-through to the consumers. However, India has limited monetary and fiscal space to provide stimulus though it is needed to address the demand side issues," it said. KKS NKD ANZ ABMABM

IIP shows marginal rise, inflation eases

New Delhi, Feb 27 () Industry needs to focus on sustainable packaging materials as one can not allow them to be a source of waste to spoil the environment, a top government official said on Thursday. Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan said that packaging material should be biodegradable, re-usable and recyclable. "We need to focus on this aspect. We cannot allow packaging to be a source of waste... littering the environment, spoiling the ecosystem and cause potential damage to animals," he said. He was addressing a national conference on packaging, organised by Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) here. "We need to address this by making right choice of material," he said. Further, Wadhawan said that there was a need encourage entrepreneurship and skilling to promote growth of the sector. Speaking about the sector, IIP Joint Director Madhab Chakraborty said that the current Indian market size of the sector is about USD 32 billion. He said three new centres of the institute are coming up at Guwahati, Bangalore, and Andhra Pradesh. "We have got land for all these three centres," he said adding that there was huge demand in the sector for industry to work on innovative environment-friendly materials. The IIP is a national apex body which was set up in 1966 by the packaging and allied industries and the Ministry of Commerce with the specific objective of improving the packaging standards in the country. In a first of its kind move, India has assembled its top energy research agencies to work together with an aim to develop the next generation of fuel resources for cutting edge commercial applications. These agencies are <keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Railways">Indian Railways</keyword> Organisation for Alternate Fuels (<keyword id="860398" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="IROAF">IROAF</keyword>), which is Indian Railways' alternate fuel arm; <keyword id="536054" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Petroleum">Indian Institute of Petroleum</keyword> (<keyword id="6427912" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIP">IIP</keyword>) Dehradun, and <keyword id="1853234" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Institute-of-Solar-Energy">National Institute of Solar Energy</keyword> (NISE). All these state-owned agencies are working to develop solar-assisted Biomass Pyrolysis technology so that methanol can be produced as an alternate fuel. "An alternate route of Methanol production is by using biomass, wood and waste products. Currently, people use the catalytic route (enzymatic route) for this. We aim to do this through biomass pyrolysis," Ravinder Gupta, Chief Administrative Officer of IROAF told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/energy/oil-gas/indias-top-energy-research-bodies-come-together-to-develop-next-gen-fuel-resources/articleshow/58836621.cms">ET</a>. While IROAF is working with an aim to use <keyword id="6357019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="solar-energy">solar energy</keyword> to convert wood and bio-waste into wood-oil, IIP is researching on ways to convert wood-oil into methanol. Separately, IROAF is also experimenting with Hydrogen-powered fuel cells to generate power. It has also been given the responsibility of exploring new avenues to fuel Indian Railways. "We are also working on fuel cell technology. Hydrogen-run fuel cells have also become affordable. On an experimental basis, we are going to fit a hydrogen fuel cell for powering guard vans attached to trains as a standby. Fuel cells can generate power up to 300 kilowatts," Gupta said.
