<ul class="summary-list"><li>Having an orgasm with a partner may help with <keyword id="12069579" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="congestion" source="Orion">congestion</keyword>, a small study found.</li><li>The research team won an Ig Nobel Prize for their quirky inquiry.</li><li>Future studies might tell them whether <keyword id="11899592" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="masturbation" source="Orion">masturbation</keyword> offers similar benefits.</li></ul><p>Scientists have found a congestion cure that's cheaper than drugs and just as effective: satisfying <keyword id="11899146" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sex" source="Orion">sex</keyword>.</p><p>Having an orgasm during sex was found to clear blocked noses just as well as over-the-counter decongestants, for an hour at least, according to a study published in the <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0145561320981441">Ear, Nose &amp; Throat Journal</a> in January 2021.</p><p>The research team received an Ig Nobel Prize, an award that celebrates quirky scientific research, this September.</p><p>Lead researcher Olcay Cem Bulut, a professor and ear, nose, and throat doctor at the SLK Clinics in Germany, told Insider he developed a hunch based on "self-observation" and recruited some colleagues to learn more.</p><p>They don't yet know how exactly orgasms unblock the nose, but Bulut told Insider "the combination of sexual arousal, excitement, physical activity, and the climax at the end can possibly help to improve nasal breathing."</p><p><a href="https://journals.physiology.org/doi/abs/10.1152/jappl.1983.55.3.860">Exercise</a> and <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1365-2273.1994.tb01256.x">hormonal changes</a> are known to have a short-term effect on how people breathe through their noses, but this is the first study to investigate the effect of sexual activity on nasal breathing. </p><h2><strong>Participants tested their breathing before and after sex</strong></h2><p>Bulut and colleagues recruited eighteen heterosexual couples for the study. They made sure none of the participants had histories of nasal problems, and also specified that both partners needed to achieve orgasm for the data to be valid.</p><p>The couples tested their own nasal function with two methods: a self-rating scale and a device that measures nasal flow. They assessed themselves before and after sex one day, then did the same tests after using nasal decongestant spray the following day.</p><p>With both interventions, the couples tested themselves immediately after, then again 30 minutes, an hour, and three hours later. Their nasal breathing improved comparably for an hour after sex and taking medicine, but the nasal spray offered better long-term relief.</p><p>In an interview with <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/sep/09/upside-down-rhinos-and-nose-clearing-orgasm-studies-win-ig-nobel-prize">The Guardian</a>, Bulut said some of the data may have been compromised post-orgasm - "I think some people couldn't focus on the device," he said.</p><h2><strong>More research is needed before doctors can prescribe sex to cure a <keyword id="6363126" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cold" source="Orion">cold</keyword></strong></h2><p>There are a few limitations to the study: first off, there were only 36 participants, and all of them were healthcare workers. Also, as Bulut underscored, the data collection was not entirely reliable post-coitus.</p><p>Further research could investigate whether masturbation offers similar benefits, but no one so far has agreed to give up self-love to be in the control group, Bulut told Insider.</p><p>If future studies support these initial findings, orgasm could eventually be prescribed to treat headaches related to sinus problems as well, the authors noted. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The UK's finance minister Jeremy Hunt has backtracked on tax cuts announced just weeks ago.</li><li>He put a hold on a cut in basic income tax, the latest government U-turn after the plan roiled markets.</li></ul><p>The pound topped $1.13, adding to earlier gains against the dollar Monday, after the UK's newly appointed finance minister Jeremy Hunt backtracked on huge tax cuts announced just weeks ago.</p><p>"We will reverse almost all the tax measures announced in the growth plan three weeks ago that have not started parliamentary legislation," the chancellor <a href="https://twitter.com/hmtreasury/status/1581961347243585536?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet">said in a broadcast statement</a>.</p><p>The <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/gbp-usd">British pound</a> was up 1% at $1.1320 after the news, having started rising earlier Monday on a Sunday Times report of a coming cut to income tax. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/chancellor-brings-forward-further-medium-term-fiscal-plan-measures">government has put an indefinite hold</a> on plans to reduce the basic rate of income tax from 20% to 19%, and has scaled back the support for households and businesses facing steep rises in energy costs. </p><p>Hunt said the measures should raise an extra £32 billion ($36.1 billion) a year for the Treasury. "It is not right to borrow to fund this tax cut," he said.</p><p>The finance minister's statement is seen as a move to try to settle markets still jittery about the impact of the huge cuts on the economy. Investors were concerned about the lack of information on how the government would fund the fiscal policy.</p><p>"No government can control markets, but every government can give certainty about the sustainability of public finances, and that is one of the many factors that influence how markets behave," Hunt said.</p><p>"But because these decisions are market sensitive, I've agreed with the Speaker the need to give an early, brief summary of the changes, which are all designed to provide confidence and stability."</p><p>Hunt's message was very much one of calm and getting a steady hand back on the tiller, Chris Beauchamp, IG's chief market analyst, said.</p><p>"This greater degree of self-awareness, as well as Hunt's reputation as being more of a 'safe pair of hands' certainly seems to have reassured everyone. For now, the market seems happy to give the new chancellor time and space to put the government's house back in order," Beauchamp said in a note.</p><p>The Treasury brought forward the announcement of the tax measures by two weeks to Monday, after a series of abrupt U-turns by the government on its mini-budget failed to calm worries about its economic credibility. The full plan is still scheduled to be published as planned on October 31.</p><p>Since Hunt <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/uk-news-finance-minister-kwasi-kwarteng-tax-cuts-u-turn-2022-10">took office on Friday,</a> replacing Kwasi Kwarteng, who was sacked after markets were spooked by the tax plans he laid out a mini-budget earlier in October. US stocks finish higher as investors set aside Target's profit warning and World Bank's dimmer growth view

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An August 2018 study that won a 2020 Ig Nobel Prize looked at whether a person could identify a narcissist based on their eyebrows.</li><li>The researchers found people with "distinct" eyebrows were more likely to be narcissists, and identified by strangers as such.</li></ul><p>Thick and defined eyebrows have become a trend in recent years, but according to an award-winning study, a person's brows could signal more than their fashion-forwardness. They could help you determine if they are a narcissist.</p><p>The <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/jopy.12396">study</a>, which was published in April 2018 in the Journal of Personality and awarded an <a href="https://www.improbable.com/ig-about/winners/#ig2020">Ig Nobel Prize</a> this September, is titled "Eyebrows cue grandiose <keyword id="680814" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Narcissism">narcissism</keyword>," and suggests that people with bushier brows are more likely to act self-centered and entitled.</p><p>To study this, researchers Miranda Giacomin and Nicholas Rule first took "neutral expression" portraits of 39 students at University of Toronto. 26 of the photo subjects were female and 13 were male and 32 of the subjects were white, while seven were non-white. The average age of the photo subjects was 21.</p><p>Then, the 39 subjects took a standardized narcissistic personality test to determine where they fell on the spectrum. They were asked how much they agree with statement like, "If I ruled the world it would bea better place" and "I find it easy to manipulate people," which are sentiments a classic narcissist would believe.</p><h2>Volunteers had to guess who was more narcissistic</h2><p>Next, the researchers had 28 virtual volunteers look at the portraits and rate them on a scale from 1 (not narcissistic at all) to 8 (extremely narcissistic), after the researcher defined a narcissist as someone who is "egotistical, self-focused, and vain."</p><p>The researchers also flipped the images upside down, because <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5051945/">research has shown</a> this allows the human eye to look at individual facial features one by one, rather than grouping them all together. Then, they had a different group of 27 volunteers rate the images.</p><p>For the third part of the experiment, researchers put opaque black boxes over the photo subjects' eyes or eyebrows, and then asked volunteers to rate their perceived narcissism levels to see which facial features most accurately tipped them off.</p><h2>Eyebrows were always the giveaway, the researchers found</h2><p>The researchers found that study volunteers were able to pinpoint which photo subjects were narcissists when they were shown both their eyebrows and eyes. The volunteers were inaccurate when shown just the subjects' eye and no eyebrows, though.</p><p>"We essentially conducted a long series of experiments where we narrowed the face features further and further down until we isolated the eyebrows as being the primary cue for people's narcissism," Giacomin told Insider.</p><p>The researchers also classified each subject's eyebrows in terms of density, shape, grooming, and distinctiveness. They found that photo subjects with distinct eyebrows, meaning they were the most obvious face feature, were more likely to be accurately portrayed as narcissists, while grooming style, shape, and density didn't play a role.</p><h2>The approach is flawed, due to brow makeup and social cues </h2><p>There were some caveats to the researchers' narcissist-identifying methods.</p><p>Giacomin said it was difficult to determine if eyebrow-grooming makeup, which is popular today for changing a person's eyebrow shape or thickness, played a role in how a person's eyebrows were perceived. A person with naturally indistinct eyebrows could use makeup to make theirs look thicker, for example.</p><p>Additionally, when a person first meets someone new, they don't only rely on their face to make a first impression, said Giacomin, so the study results might not reflect real-life experience.</p><p>"Although we did hone in on the facial features, in real life, when we're forming impressions of people, we use a wide variety of cues. People with bushy eyebrows may be more likely to be narcissists, according to an award-winning study

He became a goat - or at least he tried to, through some pretty extreme measures.</p><p>And now he has an Ig Nobel Award to show for it. The <em>Ig </em>Nobels, not to be confused with the actual Nobel Prizes, are<span> designed to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ig-nobel-winners-2015-9/">recognize achievements and studies</a> <a href="http://www.improbable.com/ig/winners/">that</a> "first make people laugh then make them think." Thwaites won the biology award alongside Charles Foster, who <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/feb/03/being-beast-charles-foster-review-man-whoate-worms-like-badger">also lived as a number of different animals</a>. </span></p><p>With the help of a team of researchers and the financial support of London-based biomedical research group <a href="http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/">Wellcome Trust</a>, Thwaites built himself a suit to achieve goat status and cross the Alps, all of which <a href="http://blog.papress.com/post/143062473433/pre-order-goatman-how-i-took-a-holiday-from-being">he chronicled in his book, "GoatMan: How I Took a Holiday from Being a Human."</a></p><p>For Thwaites, the project wasn't just a physical adventure. It was a psychological one, too.</p><p>"I started thinking of the project as kind of this investigation into what present-day <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> and technology could do to help me achieve what I think is this ancient human desire of becoming more like an animal," Thwaites told Business Insider.</p><p>Here's what the experiment was like:</p>

This man just won a very special award for turning himself into a goat

<p>They were designed to make people laugh, but the Nobel Prize parody awards known as the Ig Nobels have actually brought attention to some hard-hitting scientific discoveries.</p>
<p>While uncovering the mystery of what makes banana peels so slippery, for example, a team of Japanese physicists <a href="https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/trol/7/3/7_147/_pdf">nailed the fruit's hidden quality</a> that could someday help engineers craft a flexible artificial joint for a prosthetic limb.</p>
<p>As it turns out, the same type of slippery-smooth gels that make banana peels slide also help lubricate our joints. Underneath their brown and yellow exterior, banana skins are lined with hundreds of tiny sacs of the gooey substance, which the scientists dubbed "polysaccharide follicular gel."</p>
<p>We have a similar substance in our own bodies called synovial fluid. It lines the places where our elbows, knees and other joints slip-and-slide and keeps the bones from rubbing together and wearing away. When all those tiny sacs in the banana skin get compressed-or stepped on-they burst, forming a single super-slimy surface prime for slippage.</p>
<p>To land on their finding, the scientists first tested the slipperiness, or friction, of a banana peel on a linoleum plate (to mimic how much a shoe on the fruit would slide on a typical floor) and compared it with how much a shoe would slide on a banana-free floor. A small tool called a "force transducer" was used to measure exactly how much sliding took place.</p>

<p>The shoe on a banana peel was far more slippery (and less frictional, as shown in the chart below), than a plain old floor.</p>

<p>Not to be outdone by other fruits, the researchers compared the slippery qualities of a banana peel with those of other pieces of produce, including apples, oranges and tangerines.</p>

<p>Not surprisingly, the banana skins were the least resistant to slippage. Learning more about the material that makes banana peels so slippery could help engineers created a synthetic substance with the same qualities needed to make artificial limbs behave more like real ones.</p>

<p>In <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0191886913001918" target="_blank">a 2013 paper</a>, a joint team of British and Australian researchers found that night owls tend to have the so-called Dark Triad of personality traits.</p>
<p><span>The traits are:&#xa0;</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><strong>  Narcissism</strong>, or a need for dominance and a sense of entitlement</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><strong>  Psychopathy</strong>, or a willingness to manipulate people and a streak of social charm</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><strong> &#xa0;</strong><span><strong>Machiavellianism</strong>, or a tendency toward impulsivity and regular antagonism toward other people</span></span></p>
<p>The nighttime orientation serves as a kind of evolutionary adaptation for the <span>Dark Triad</span>&#xa0;personality type, argue authors&#xa0;<span>Peter K. Jonason of the&#xa0;University of Western Sydney and&#xa0;Amy Jones and&#xa0;Minna Lyon of&#xa0;Liverpool Hope University.</span></p>
<p>The night - with its lower levels of light in the environment and lower levels of cognitive functioning in people - could be well-suited to the "fast life strategy" that the <span>Dark Triad</span>&#xa0;personality type embodies.&#xa0;</p>
<p>"Such features of the night may facilitate the casual sex, mate-poaching, and risk-taking the <span>Dark Triad</span>&#xa0;traits are linked to," they argue.</p>
<p>The methodology of their research was clear-cut: 263 volunteers took an online study. The study had a range of personality quizzes, testing for narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism - plus a quiz for chronotypes.&#xa0;</p>
<p>The result? People who scored highly in the dark triad traits also tended to stay up late.</p>
<p>It makes a sinister sort of sense.&#xa0;</p>
<p>"Those high on the Dark Triad may be characterized by cognitive biases that orient them to occupy an environment that will facilitate their life history strategy," the authors conclude. "In short, those high on the Dark Triad traits like many other predators (e.g., lions, African hunting dogs, scorpions), are creatures of the night."&#xa0;</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The paper is so impactful it even&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.improbable.com/ig/winners/" target="_blank">won the 2014 Ig Nobel prize for surprising research</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">&#xa0;for "amassing evidence that people who habitually stay up late are, on average, more self-admiring, more manipulative, and more psychopathic than people who habitually arise early in the morning."&#xa0;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The takeaway? The next time you're out late and meet someone charming, look out.&#xa0;</span></p>

Science Says Night Owls Are 'More Manipulative And Psychopathic' Than Early Risers

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>It's not just the religious who claim to see faces in inert objects. From shadowy likenesses of Jesus and the Virgin Mary in potato chips and tree stumps to the Man in the Moon, people have been spotting human portraits in faceless objects for hundreds of years.</p>
<p>Our reactions are perfectly normal, according to recent <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0010945214000288">research</a> from Chinese and Canadian scientists, published earlier this year in the journal Cortex. On September 18, these researchers won the Ig Nobel prize in neuroscience for their study, which uncovered the brain processes at play when someone - religious or not - sees a face where none exist.</p>
<p>The phenomenon of spotting human likenesses in everything from tortillas to the sky is so normal it has a name: pareidolia, Greek for "faulty image." To test how many of us experience pareidolia, researchers showed a group of volunteers a series of black and white image scrambles.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Although all of the images were purely random assortments of dots and blobs, the researchers told the volunteers that half of them contained either faces or letters. Mysteriously, the volunteers said they spotted either faces or letters in the random images nearly a third of the time.</p>
<p>While they had the volunteers look at the images, the scientists measured their brain activity with an MRI. They found that the same parts of the brain that light up when we see real faces lit up in participants who saw non-existent faces - basically our brains are just tuned to recognize faces, even if it's in a piece of burnt bread. They aren't imagining something, but putting together the same pattern recognition that we use when we spot someone's face out of a crowd.</p>
<p>Scientist Carl Sagan theorized that the reason we see faces where none exist stems from an evolutionary need to quickly discern facial expressions. Those of our ancestors who could easily decipher friend from foe had a better chance of surviving, and passed on their genes.</p>
<p>Recent research has suggests that this innate inclination to search out faces has even spurred our <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-are-human-faces-so-complex-and-unique-2014-9">faces to become more unique</a> than those of other species - a potential explanation for why we all look slightly different.</p>

Researchers Studying Why People Keep Seeing Jesus In Toast Just Won An Award 

<p>Taste and flavor are not the same thing, although the two are often confused.</p>
<p>Flavor is how we perceive food and other substances based on a combination of senses, which include taste, smell, and touch.</p>
<p>In addition, the idea that there is a difference between "natural" chemicals, like those found in fruits and vegetables, and the synthetic version of those chemicals is just a bad way of looking at the world.</p>
<p>All foods (and everything else around us) are made up of chemicals, whether they occur in nature or are made in a lab.</p>
<p>From the difference between real and imitation vanilla to chemicals that make up popular spices, here some some facts about natural and artificial flavors.</p>
<p>Although true taste occurs on the tongue, it is only one piece of the puzzle that makes up flavor. As much as 80% of what we perceive as taste actually comes from smell.</p>
<p class="slide-title">Everything we smell or taste is a response to chemicals. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The characteristic smell of cloves, for example, comes from one chemical called eugenol.</span></p>

<p>So, both artificial and natural flavors contain chemicals. The distinction between natural and artificial flavorings is the <em>source</em> of chemicals. Natural flavors are created from anything that can be eaten (i.e animals and vegetables), even if those edible things are processed in the lab to create flavorings.</p>
<p>Artificial flavors come from anything that is inedible (i.e petroleum) that is processed to create chemicals of flavorings.</p>

<p>Here is the official FDA definition of natural flavoring:</p>
<p>"Natural flavor is the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional."</p>
<p class="slide-title">The FDA's definition of an artificial flavor is any substance that does not meet the definition of a natural flavor.</p>

<p>Sometimes a chemical flavoring could be made from either natural or artificial sources - the resulting molecule is the same, but the route to making it can be different. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="slide-title">So, why use artificial flavors at all? Well, the synthetic chemicals in artificial flavors generally cost less to produce than finding natural sources of chemicals. They are also potentially safer because they have been rigorously tested and used. Producing them can be more eco-friendly as well, since it doesn't require growing fields of food first.</p>

The Surprising Truth About How Many Chemicals Are In Everything We Eat

<p>We asked a few of our favorite traders, strategists, and economists for their our best investment ideas for the next 10 years. Here's what they told us:</p>
<h1>1. Greek GDP warrants</h1>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><br />"These instruments are a bi-product of Greek debt restructuring and will pay a cent a year if and when Greek GDP hits certain thresholds. They won't pay those cents for several years yet because Greek GDP is still some way from the triggers, so they are suited to the patient professional investor with a long term horizon. But in the meantime default risk is tiny; it's hard to default when you only have to pay in good times."</span></p>

<h1>2. Qatari stocks</h1>
<p><br />"On a ten year view I'd invest in the Tehran stock exchange, but given its difficult for US citizens in particular to do so, I'd pick the Doha Stock Market in Qatar. Qatar is a country with a GDP per citizen of around $1m that will be investing aggressively into World Cup 2022 to transform itself into a destination for millions of tourists. The country's stock exchange is being promoted to the main MSCI Emerging Markets index this May and trades at under 10x earnings (versus a historic level of 15-20x) with a 5% dividend yield and likely EPS growth of 10%, backed by the government who are extremely shareholder friendly given the locals own the majority of shares. The currency is pegged to the US dollar with appreciation potential. If/when US rates start to rise, net interest margins of local banks will expand dramatically. An easy way to invest is the closed-end Qatar Investment Fund listed in London, which gives you index exposure at a 10% discount to NAV. This should easily triple over 10 years in dollar terms with minimal downside risk."</p>

<h1>6. Farmland</h1>
<p><br />"Ten years is a long time in investments (this time 10 years ago, Eastman-Kodak was a Dow component) so a ten-year single lock-in investment is going to have to meet some criteria: (1) unlikely to be disrupted by technology; (2) meets a need somewhere towards the bottom of Maslow's pyramid; (3) produces a yield; and (4) expectation of capital gain. With this in mind, my ten-year lock-in investment would be agricultural land. The customer base is growing. The customers have little choice about buying the production from agricultural land. It produces a yield. Supply is limited (full disclosure - I own a farm)."</p>

<p><br />"You are getting paid a premium for risk (extension and prepayment) that has largely been removed. Plus supply will be shrinking acting as a natural cap on yields. Banks still have tepid loan demand and rising deposits. Buying Fed induced market pukes has been very profitable."</p>

<p><br />"The one investment I think I'd make to hold over the next 10 years would be in oil services, particularly focusing on international pressure pumping. While crude oil continues to ratchet upwards in price and get more and more expensive to find, natural gas through hydraulic fracturing seems to get easier with the boundaries for ever wider-scale production halted by the factionalism and arbitrary hypocrisy of government controls, particularly in the shale rich areas of South America. Those barriers must fall, given the price differential that continues to expand between crude and gas; and the international services group will be the most likely long-term benefactors - think Schlumberger (SLB) and Baker-Hughes (BHI)."</p>

Once these start to run out and when we see a proper return to growth here in Europe and the US, I would expect to see these very much in demand. On the rare earth metals, the fact that China is moving to tighten control on this industry. Their uses in defence and telecommunications, particularly make them a relevant investment for the future."</p>

White flight and the de-industrialization of our cities is a trend that's over. The white population of Detroit shrank by <a href="http://cornersideyard.blogspot.com/2012/05/what-really-makes-detroit-different.html" target="_blank">96% from 1950-2010</a>. Meanwhile, while the outer suburbs of those cities continues to shrink, the inner cores are getting younger and more educated. While house prices per square foot are north of $1,000 in parts of San Francisco and New York, you can buy into most of these cities for under $100/square foot. It's only a matter of time before we start talking about places like Buffalo and Pittsburgh and Milwaukee as the Berlins and Brooklyns for the next generation. Not all of these cities will be home runs, and it'd be preferable to live in one yourself if you're going to invest, but the list of options is very long: Milwaukee, Chicago, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Hartford, Providence, Kansas City, St. Louis, Memphis, and Birmingham, for starters. I'd focus on ones with pro sports teams, strong universities, and busier airports."</p>

This demand acceleration will likely coincide with continued build up of health threats to the emerging markets from internal pollution and environmental degradation, and accelerating ageing and health concerns in the advanced economies. Timing for the demand pressures materialisation is a lot longer than 10 years, but investment window for pricing these risks forward is closing fast. The next 'perfect storm' in global economies is likely to be ageing-related one."</p>

<p><br />"For the next 10 years, I like shorting commodities. I expect little inflation-and more likely, deflation-so changes in real and nominal commodity prices will be about the same. The attached chart shows that real commodity prices have fallen steadily since the mid-1800s, despite huge growth in commodity demand from <span>the American Industrial Revolution after the Civil War, forced industrialization of Japan in the late 1800s, </span><span>mass-produced autos starting in the 1920s, etc. </span><span>Commodity price spikes caused by demand leaps in the Civil War and World Wars I and II were soon </span><span>reversed as were price leaps due to the oil supply constraints in the 1970s. Many look for jumping </span><span>commodity prices in future years since there are limited amounts of copper in the earth's crust, two billion </span><span>more mouths to feed, upgrading of diets and rising consumer spending in developing countries, etc. </span><span>The reality, however, is that human ingenuity always beats threatened shortages. Coke made from coal saved </span><span>the Industrial Revolution, which was threatened by a shortage of hardwood trees to make charcoal to smelt </span><span>iron. In the early 1800s, overhunting had decimated the world's whale population to the point that the lights </span><span>would go out from a lack of whale oil, many feared. Then in 1858, Edwin Drake drilled a crude oil well in </span><span>Titusville, Pa., and kerosene lamps rode to the rescue. I can recall when serious economists forecast the end </span><span>of telecommunications growth because of shortages of copper for wires. Then came fiber optics."</span></p>

<h1>20. The S&amp;P 500</h1>
<p><span><br />"I hate to be unimaginative here, but 10 years is a long time to hold a very specific investment.  Sure the energy renaissance has a long time horizon, but what will it look like in 3 years much less 10? Who can say? I'd say the S&amp;P 500. I have a chart below that is my favorite chart of all time. I created it over a decade ago and it hasn't failed me yet.  It simply shows the trailing PE and the next 10 years price return for the S&amp;P 500.  Below is the shortened version of the one I have going back many decades. It's amazing right? Future Nobel Prize, baby! AMIRIGHT?! Take that Shiller-this one actually WORKS. But I digress… Anyway, right now it shows the S&amp;P 500 will generate about an 8% price return on average over the next 10 years. Add a 2% dividend and you get 10%. A 10% annualized total return is not a bad deal compared to bonds, commodities, or cash for the next 10 years. I'll take it."</span></p>

<h1>21. Energy-intensive U.S. manufacturing</h1>
