The Indian Council of Medical Research (<keyword id="6364396" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="icmr" source="Orion">ICMR</keyword>) has come up with the country's first Ethical Guidelines for the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Research and <keyword id="6354525" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="healthcare" source="Orion">Healthcare</keyword> to provide an ethical framework for the development of <keyword id="6355999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ai" source="Orion">AI</keyword>-based tools which will benefit all stakeholders. According to a document drafted by the Department of Health Research and ICMR's Artificial Intelligence Cell, AI for health, to a large extent, depends on data obtained from human participants and invokes additional concerns related to potential biases, data handling, interpretation, autonomy, risk minimization, professional competence, data sharing, and confidentiality. "It is therefore imperative to have an ethical framework that addresses issues specific to AI for biomedical research and healthcare," the guidelines stated. The adoption of AI technology in healthcare is growing in India. However, AI as data-driven technology has many potential ethical challenges which include algorithmic transparency and explainability, clarity on liability, accountability and oversight, bias and discrimination, said ICMR Director General Dr Rajiv Behl. "The DHR-ICMR AI Cell has identified the need to develop these guiding ethical principles concerning artificial intelligence and machine learning-based tools. "These guidelines will provide the ethical framework for the development of AI-based tools which will benefit all stakeholders, including innovators, developers, patients, technologists, researchers, healthcare professionals, ethics committees, sponsors and funding agencies involved in research related to AI in biomedical research and healthcare," he said. NTAGI chief Dr N K Arora said the purpose of the guideline is to provide an ethical framework which can assist in the development, deployment, and adoption of AI-based solutions for biomedical research and healthcare delivery. The guidelines are intended for all stakeholders involved in research on artificial intelligence in healthcare, including creators, developers, technicians, researchers, clinicians, ethics committees, institutions, sponsors, and funding organizations. It includes separate sections addressing ethical principles for AI in health, guiding principles for stakeholders, the ethics review process, governance of artificial intelligence for healthcare and research, and the informed consent process involving human participants and their data. The guideline has been formulated after extensive discussions with subject experts, researchers and ethicists, said Dr Arora. The induction of AI into healthcare has the potential to be the solution for significant challenges like diagnosis and screening, therapeutics, preventive treatments, clinical decision-making, public health surveillance, complex data analysis, and predicting disease outcomes. This list is likely to grow in the future, the document said. The purpose of these guidelines is not to limit innovation or recommend any disease-specific diagnostic or therapeutic approach but to guide effective yet safe development, deployment and adoption of AI-based technologies in biomedical research and healthcare delivery, it said. These guidelines will be used by experts and ethics committees reviewing research proposals involving the use of AI-based tools and technologies. Instead of thinking about what you may need, the app or grocer will suggest what you can buy and what other ingredients you can try. “Something we tend to forget ingredients. The AI will help remind you. If you’re grocery shopping, physically, you tend to forget because it's not there in front of you. You’ll have to go looking for that ingredient in some aisle, on some shelf. Photo studios in Kerala are using the opportunity to print masks with partial faces on them so that people can still recognise you as you go about town. “This is a classical case of very low hanging fruit of use of AI — facial recognition, take an image and put in on a mask,” said Natarajan. “You see a new business for that operator — an MSME. They differentiated among other mask producers in the market,” he added. New Delhi, May 4 () Indian Council of Medical Research has deployed IBM's artificial intelligence tool Watson Assistant to expedite and simplify responses from testing to provide accurate and updated data on COVID-19, the IT company said on Monday.The virtual chat assistant will give responses based on the final guidelines issued by ICMR and also filter old rules that remain valid for handling tests, sample collection, diagnostics, data entry etc related to coronavirus cases.ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava said that it is critical to remain focused on testing, diagnosis and treatment of coronavirus patients in order to lower the growth curve.He said with the number of on-field testing teams expanding across the nation as part of India's COVID-19 measures, collaboration with IBM will help automate responses from the field and facilitate access to accurate and updated data on the coronavirus diagnostics and reporting."This will help augment our teams' response time and allow them to concentrate on priorities like developing and updating testing and treatment protocols and guidance for COVID-19," Bhargava said.Coronavirus cases in the country have increased to 42,533 till date and killed 1,373 people."Technology continues to play a significant role in India's fight against COVID-19, and it is crucial to evaluate and leverage the most effective solutions to support these initiatives. The deployment of IBM's chatbot AI platform is aimed to help ICMR effectively manage the process of capturing data relating to COVID-19," Ministry of Electronics and IT Additional Secretary Gopalakrishnan S said.The virtual agent has been deployed on protected pages of the ICMR website that can be accessed only by authorized personnel who are involved with sample collection and testing in hospitals and diagnostic labs, the statement said."As India rises to meet the challenge of COVID-19, it is crucial to enable government bodies such as ICMR to utilize data and capabilities effectively for rapid detection and treatment," IBM general manager for India and South Asia, Sandip Patel said.Watson virtual agent will handle text based queries in Hindi and English language."Queries will be categorized under various headings such as governance, logistics, data entry and sharing, staff training and testing and for complex questions, pre-defined contact information of ICMR is made available. The virtual agent is also expected to help in on-boarding new data entry operators and staff of diagnostic centres, as the COVID-19 test network expands across the country," the statement said. Business Messages will also be available on mobile websites so that a business can add the ability for customers to quickly "Message" right from their website and offer the same smart automated replies, paired with live agent connection, Google said in a statement on Thursday. "Messaging has become such a valuable way to connect with customers that twice as many businesses are messaging via Google now, compared to last year," the company informed. Business Messages provides brands a comprehensive messaging solution across Android devices, and through Maps on iOS. Several organisations, including MyGov in India, were among the first to try the updated Business Messages experience to make customer care more effective and efficient, particularly during Covid-19. "MyGov, with partner Amplify.ai, is providing help and answering live questions from Indian citizens about hours, Covid-19 helplines, and ways to volunteer and donate, for more than 11,000 food and night shelters across India," said Google. The tech giant this month launched a new feature on Google Search, Assistant, and Maps for users in India to help them find information on Covid-19 testing centres near them. The search giant partnered with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and MyGov to provide the information on authorised testing labs. The Search, Assistant, and Maps currently feature 700 testing labs across 300 cities in India. The feature is currently available in English and eight Indian languages including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Gujarati, and Marathi.
