The Indian <keyword id="22196321" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-card-industry" source="keywords">credit card industry</keyword> is struggling to grow, as new issues slow down on a year-on-year (YoY) basis. Not only has the growth i.e. issuance of new credit cards slowed down, but lenders are also becoming increasingly cautious of the asset qualities, a recent report by Nomura showed. From 19% in July 2024, the growth in the <keyword id="6368202" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-card" source="Orion">credit card</keyword> spendings came down to 13% in August 2024. The year-to-date (YTD) growth has also significantly declined in FY25, currently standing at 17%, markedly down from 28% in FY24. For the fifth consecutive month, the number of new credit cards added to the system remained well below the 1-million, or 10 lakh mark. Around 9.2 lakh credit cards were added during the month, a slight uptick from the 7.55 lakh cards that came into the system In July 2024. However, there is growth in this space nevertheless, with about 10.55 crore active credit cards at present, marking a 15.6% YoY increase. Even the annualised spend per card, or the average amount spent via an annual card during an year grew 1% YoY to Rs 1.87 lakh. But this was far less than the 7% growth annual spends via one credit card saw in FY24. Meanwhile, what continues to burgeon consistently is the outstanding amount on these credit cards, which ballooned to Rs 2.7 lakh crore in June 2024, up from Rs 2.6 lakh crore in March 2024, and around Rs 2 lakh crore in the year ago period. To put this in perspective, pre-pandemic, the total outstanding amount stood at Rs 87,686 crore, which marks a 24% CAGR in this amount, in just a span of 5 years. <h2>Large drops, slowdown to sustain</h2>Even the monthly expenditure per card dropped 2% YoY to Rs 16,000 in August, 2024. Subsequently, the transaction volume via credit cards also dipped to 1.6% in August, along with the total amount of <keyword id="21084888" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="credit-card-spending" source="keywords">credit card spending</keyword>, which fell to Rs 1.69 lakh crore in August, from Rs 1.73 lakh crore in July. Also, there has been a hefty cutdown in provisions made for credit card reward points, which reflects in the quantum of credit card benefits that have been mowed out by companies of late, making credit cards far less lucrative than before. <h2>HDFC takes lead </h2>During August 2024, <keyword id="19895995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC-Bank" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="HDFC Bank" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="HDFC Bank">HDFC bank</keyword> added a total of 2.41 lakh credit cards, taking its total tally of active credit cards to 2.19 crore. <keyword id="19900482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Bank" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="ICICI Bank" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="ICICI Bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> came a second distant, adding 1.45 lakh credit cards during the month, which means that the second-largest credit card issuer now holds over 1.75 crore active credit cards. Axis Bank and SBI Cards also added 1.27 lakh and 1.1 lakh cards, respectively to their repertoire during the month, while the growth numbers at Kotak Mahindra Bank remained largely flat, stagnating the bank's total card tally at 54.13 lakh. This was due to the ongoing ban on the bank due to its weak IT infrastructural issues imposed by RBI in April 2024. If anything, the bank's number of credit cards declined by 61,191 during the month. Even as the festive season approaches, experts think that it is unlikely to make a major dent in credit card spendings, which are expected to see a further slowdown in the quarters to come.

Credit card growth experiencing a slowdown, as borrowers struggle to pay back loans

<keyword id="19895282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai" source="keywords">Mumbai</keyword>, <keyword id="19900482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="icici-bank" source="keywords">ICICI Bank</keyword> on Saturday said its consolidated net profit for the December quarter jumped 25.7 per cent to Rs 11,052.60 crore, up from Rs 8,792.42 crore. The second largest private sector lender posted a 23.6 per cent rise in standalone net profit for the third quarter of the current fiscal to Rs 10,272 crore. The bank's core net interest income was up 13.4 per cent to Rs 18,678 crore, on the back of net interest margin narrowing to 4.43 per cent and the domestic advances growth coming at 18.8 per cent. The bank's other income grew 19.8 per cent to Rs 5,975 crore during the reporting quarter. Its provisions came down to Rs 1,049.37 crore from the Rs 2,257.44 crore in the year-ago period, helping the profit growth.

ICICI Bank is one of the few banks in the Indian market that is optimistic about how the future will play out. While its peers laid in cautious commentary and guarded predictions of the future, ICICI Bank was clear in its stance that the Indian economy is getting back on its feet during the second-quarter earnings call. However, ICICI Bank’s numbers weren’t solely based on the turnaround of the Indian economy — the sale of its stake in ICICI Securities worth ₹305 crore helped. According to the bank, it has seen credit card spends have returned to 85% of pre-COVID levels. Mortgage disbursements, on the other hand, beat pre-COVID levels to reach an all-time high in September. Auto loan disbursements and disbursements across ICICI Bank’s rural portfolio also exceeded pre-COVID levels at the end of September. The management believes that pandemics are also short-term, so even COVID-19 will eventually blow over. Although there’s no vaccine on the market yet, people are getting used to going back to work with the relevant precautions in place, which means more business activity —- which, in turn, is good news for the bank. Even though it hasn’t had to use any of its COVID-related provisions yet, ICICI Bank is still keeping ₹8,772 crore in its coffers to cushion its balance sheet.

ICICI Bank surges 6% after it posts six-fold jump in net profit at over ₹4,200 crore

ICICI Bank on Saturday reported a 50 per cent jump in net profit to Rs 6,905 crore in the first quarter of the current fiscal aided by a decline in bad loans. The second biggest private sector bank had posted a net profit of Rs 4,616 crore in the same quarter of the previous financial year. Total income during the April-June quarter of 2022-23 improved to Rs 28,336.74 crore, from Rs 24,379.27 crore in the same quarter in FY22, ICICI Bank said in a regulatory filing. On a consolidated basis, ICICI Bank reported a 55 per cent jump in net profit to Rs 7,385 crore for the reporting quarter as against Rs 4,616 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal. Interest income of the bank during the quarter increased to Rs 23,671.54 crore from Rs 20,383.41 crore in the year-ago period. On the asset quality front, gross non-performing assets (NPAs) declined to 3.41 per cent of the gross advances as of June 30, 2022, from 5.15 per cent on June 30, 2021. Net NPAs or bad loans too slipped to 0.70 per cent from 1.16 per cent. As a result, provisions for bad loans and contingencies more than halved to Rs 1,143.82 crore in the quarter, as against Rs 2,851 .69 crore put earmarked in the year-ago quarter. During the quarter, there were net additions of Rs 382 crore to gross NPAs compared to net additions of Rs 3,604 crore in Q1-2022. Recoveries and upgrades of NPAs, excluding write-offs and sale, were Rs 5,443 crore in the first quarter. Provisioning coverage ratio on non-performing assets was 79.6 per cent at June 30, 2022. Total capital adequacy ratio was 18.74 per cent and Tier-1 capital adequacy ratio was 17.95 per cent, on a standalone basis, at June 30, 2022. The net interest margin rose to 4.01 per cent as compared to 3.89 per cent in the same quarter a year ago. Total advances increased by 21 per cent year-on-year to Rs 8,95,625 crore while period-end term deposits increased by 11 per cent to Rs 5,58,235 crore at June 30. ICICI Bank Q1 profit zooms 50% to ₹6,905 crore

Former <keyword id="6653" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="icici-bank" source="Orion">ICICI Bank</keyword> CEO and MD <keyword id="45875" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chanda-kochhar" source="Orion">Chanda Kochhar</keyword> and her husband <keyword id="2621036" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="deepak-kochhar" source="Orion">Deepak Kochhar</keyword> were released from jail on Tuesday morning, a day after the Bombay High Court granted them interim bail in a loan fraud case, a police official said. Chanda Kochhar walked out of the Byculla women's prison in Mumbai, while her husband was released from the Arthur Road jail, the official said. The CBI arrested Kochhars on December 23, 2022, in connection with the Videocon-ICICI Bank loan case. The couple had filed petitions in the Bombay High Court challenging their arrest, terming it as illegal and arbitrary. The HC on Monday granted them interim bail and came down heavily on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for making the arrest in a "casual and mechanical" manner and without application of mind. The CBI named the Kochhars, <keyword id="6354248" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="videocon" source="Orion">Videocon</keyword> group founder Venugopal Dhoot along with <keyword id="3152077" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nupower-renewables" source="Orion">Nupower Renewables</keyword> (NRL) - managed by Deepak Kochhar - Supreme Energy, Videocon International Electronics Ltd and Videocon Industries Ltd as accused in the FIR (first information report) linked to the case registered in 2019 under Indian Penal Code sections pertaining to criminal conspiracy and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The central agency has alleged that ICICI Bank, headed by Chanda Kochhar from 2009 to 2018, sanctioned credit facilities to the tune of Rs 3,250 crore to these companies in violation of norms. It further claimed that as a part of quid pro quo (Latin expression literally meaning "something for something"), Dhoot made an investment of Rs 64 crore in Nupower Renewables through Supreme Energy Pvt Ltd (SEPL), and transferred SEPL to Pinnacle Energy Trust managed by Deepak Kochhar through a circuitous route between 2010 and 2012. The Kochhars were arrested by the CBI on December 23, while <keyword id="18489" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="dhoot" source="Orion">Dhoot</keyword> was arrested three days later. All three are currently in judicial custody. Dhoot had challenged his arrest claiming it was illegal and sought immediate release from the case. His lawyer S S Ladda, along with advocate Viral Babar, argued that Dhoot was arrested only because the investigating officer came under pressure after the Kochhar couple's arrest. During the first remand hearing of the Kochhars their lawyer questioned why Dhoot had not been arrested yet, the <keyword id="6379256" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="videocon-group" source="Orion">Videocon group</keyword> founder's lawyer pointed out. The Kochhars were afraid that Dhoot might become an approver, advocate Ladda said. The Kocchars' lawyer made sure it was recorded in the remand order that Dhoot had not been arrested, which put pressure on the investigating officer leading to Dhoot's arrest, he claimed. Special Judge M R Purwar, however, didn't find merit in the arguments and rejected Dhoot's plea.
