<ul><li>The stock of ICICI Bank jumped by 4% in early trade, due to strong quarterly earnings.</li><li>The bank not only posted strong growth in profits but also managed to reduce the amount of bad loans.</li><li>Global broking firm CLSA called the numbers as a sign of turnaround in the bank that has been hamstrung in recent years by rising bad loans and allegations of a financial scandal.</li></ul> The stock of ICICI Bank jumped by 4% in early trade, worth over ₹10,600 crore ($1.5 billion), on the first trading day, after it announced better-than-expected earnings. The bank not only posted strong growth in profits but also managed to reduce the amount of bad loans. Global broking firm CLSA called the numbers as a sign of turnaround in the bank that has been hamstrung in recent years by rising bad loans and allegations of a financial scandal. ICICI Bank posted a consolidated net profit of ₹2,513 crore for the quarter ending June 2019, which is a massive increase on the stressed quarter it experienced last year where it posted a mere ₹4.9 crore in profit. It is also fair improvement on the ₹1,170 crore profit posted three months ago. Signs of recovery But that is not the only thing which could be driving the stock which was trading at ₹432.8 at 11 am, on Monday (July 29). The country’s largest private bank is showing strong signs of recovery. This quarter its net interest income went up by 27% to 7,737 crore from last year. More importantly, the bank has made lower provisions which are made to cover for bad loans, at ₹3,496 crore as compared to ₹5,971 crore last year. “ICICI is exiting the corporate non-performing loans cycle, reflected in the 31% year on year fall in slippage and some upgrades below-rated loans to the steel industry). Moreover, its rise in better-rated clients and low exposure to new stressed corporates will insulate from risks,” said a report by CLSA. Improved loan book All of its top 20 loans are rated A- or better, according to the brokerage which gave the stock a ‘Buy’ rating, as it see 2019-20 as the year of turnaround. The brokerage predicts that its shareholders will be able to make as much as 15-16% returns from the stock, as the company chugs on its path to recovery. “As structural changes become more entrenched at the bank , ICICI Bank’s reported financials will improve and stabilise. Continuous stability and improvement in core parameters underpin our thesis of its trajectory towards normalized earnings,” said a report by HDFC Bank. ICICI has been emerging from last year’s revelation of bad loans weighing on its books year. Adding fuel to fire is a scandal involving its long-time CEO Chanda Kochhar , who allegedly gave loans to Videocon Group <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/its-the-end-of-the-road-for-chanda-kochhar/articleshow/66082441.cms">in exchange for favours</a>. An Enforcement Directorate probe is still underway in the case. Kochhar was later ousted and asked to pay back all her hefty bonuses as well.

ICICI Bank shares gain over a billion dollars in value after signs of turnaround

<keyword id="13222" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SBI">SBI</keyword> cuts <keyword id="6354730" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Home-loan">home loan</keyword> rate; ICICI cash in on the festive fervour, banks including SBI and ICICI have unveiled a host of benefits such as reduction in rates, waiver of processing fee and overdraft facility. 
 SBI has further slashed interest rates by 0.15 per cent for its home loans up to Rs 75 lakh, while <keyword id="6653" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> is offering overdraft facility along with the home loan. 
 SBI Home Loans are cheapest in the market and provide an excellent opportunity for both new home buyers as well as those who wish to switch over their home loan to SBI to save on <keyword id="6357050" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="EMI">EMI</keyword>, the bank said in a statement. 
 
SBI home loan would be available at 9.15 percent while women borrower will get at 9.10 percent. 
 
Another market major ICICI Bank is offering the salaried having an account with it, credit from Rs 5 lakh going up to Rs 1 crore against property owned by them. 
 The product, 'ICICI <keyword id="3805058" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bank-home-overdraft">Bank Home Overdraft</keyword>', will offer dual advantage of a term loan as well as an overdraft facility, the bank said in a statement. 
 
"While the term loan provides customers with quick funds for immediate needs, the overdraft facility offers them the flexibility to access funds instantly for expenses, as and when required," it said. 
 
Those buying the overdraft loan from the bank would be able to utilise the funds for their personal needs such as for education, medical treatment, home renovation, marriage and overseas travel among others. 
 
Beginning from a minimum of Rs 5 lakh to a maximum of Rs 1 crore, customers will have the facility to avail a minimum 10 per cent of the total amount as term loan and maximum 90 per cent as an overdraft. 
 
ICICI Bank said the interest on term loan would be charged as per the equated monthly instalment, while on the overdraft the charges will be only on the utilised amount for the period the funds are used. 
 
On a Home Loan of Rs 50 lakh, reduction in interest rate by 0.15 percent by SBI will help a home buyer to save Rs 542 per month and approximately Rs 2 lakh during the loan tenure of 30 years, SBI said. 
 
According to SBI, the value of the savings on EMI of Rs 542 per month, if invested in a recurring deposit, will be approximately Rs 6 lakh at the end of the loan tenure. offers overdraft

Mumbai, Apr 3 () Moody's Investors Service on Friday placed private sector lender Indusind Bank's ratings under review for downgrade and cut its outlook on ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and IDBI Bank by a notch due to asset quality concerns in the current challenging times.The global ratings agency also affirmed the deposit ratings of ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and IDBI Bank.The ongoing COVID-19 crisis is bound to have a major impact on various sectors, including banks, according to experts. The RBI has already moved by offering a three-month moratorium on loan repayments.The review for downgrade of IndusInd's ratings reflects the downside risks to asset quality amid the deteriorating macro environment and financial market volatility, the agency said in a note.The proportion of microfinance and vehicle finance for IndusInd Bank is higher than the peers and these loans have a high risk of getting impacted due to the current stress as they have limited capacities to repay, it said.The bank's funding is also weak when compared to other rated Indian banks, as reflected by its high deposit concentration and low share of retail deposits, the agency said, adding this makes the bank more susceptible to the dislocations in the financial markets, including on wholesale funding sources.Meanwhile, the outlook on Axis Bank and ICICI Bank's ratings has been revised down to negative from stable, while the same for the LIC-run IDBI Bank has been made "stable" from "positive" earlier.The agency attributed that the changes in outlook are driven by potential deterioration in asset quality."The economic shock, resulting from the nationwide lockdown will exacerbate existing negative pressures on asset quality from the already deteriorating operating environment prior to the outbreak," it explained.ICICI Bank and Axis Bank may stand to suffer because of their exposures to the small and medium enterprises, given the fact that such businesses have limited liquidity buffers to withstand difficulties, it said.The rating agency also said that retail loans, especially the unsecured ones like credit cards can also face reverses if the salaries of borrowers suffer as a result of the lockdown.For IDBI Bank, it acknowledged that very low new business origination provides a cushion, but flagged risks from poor loan underwriting standards.The agency has also lowered its assumption of systemic support for ICICI Bank and Axis Bank to 'moderate' from 'high', resulting in a one-notch downgrade of their counterparty risk assessments and local currency counterparty risk rating, it said. it covered Being a large private sector bank, JM Financial forecasts that ICICI Bank is likely to see limited impact from the moratorium even with 17.5% of loans opting to delay their interest payments. Even though margins dropped and there is a slowdown in credit demand, ICICI Bank still managed to post 36% yearly growth in profit at the end of the first quarter. Merrill Lynch picks up ₹341 crore worth of ICICI Bank shares Betting on the bank's growth, Merrill Lynch Markets Singapore picked shares worth ₹341 crore from Societe Generale. Data with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) shows that the block deal was more 90 lakh shares were sold at ₹378.6 apiece. This is the second time that Merrill Lynch has bought into ICICI Bank within the last six months. ICICI Bank's share price is expected to surge as much as 34% in the coming year — despite having more loans under moratorium than other lenders

<ul><li>The banking sector is struggling with weak asset quality due to mounting non-performing assets</li><li>Axis's core capital ratio is unlikely to meet the threshold for higher-rated banks, the agency said</li><li><keyword id="42456" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI">ICICI</keyword>'s core capitalisation is higher than most Indian banks but poses only a moderate buffer against risks</li></ul> Fitch today slashed the ratings of two of the top Indian private sector banks-ICICI Bank and <keyword id="6355975" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="axis-bank">Axis Bank</keyword>. Amongst other things, the rating agency is concerned that these private banks might rank low in priority for government support, if they need them. Why would a private bank need government support? They might if they are too big to fail. While they have not required government support yet, many experts are worried that they might need it in the future. The country, on the other hand, has too many banks with too many bad loans, and too many of them are too big to fail. A whole bunch of them such as <keyword id="6354731" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-bank-of-india">State Bank of India</keyword> are owned by the government, and are likely to be bailed out first. That puts private banks behind many others on the priority list. “Fitch believes that the sovereign's constrained finances and the large number of majority government-owned banks that are systemically important and have weak capitalisation means that these banks will have priority in terms of timeliness of government support,” said Fitch in a report where it cut the long-term issuer default rating International Depository Receipts (IDRs) of Axis Bank to BB+ from BBB-. <keyword id="6653" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword>’s long-term issuer default rating of IDR was also revised to (IDR) to 'BB+' from 'BBB-'. Depleting coffers The rating agency is worried about ‘possible government support’ to these banks as the sector in general is struggling with weak asset quality due to mounting non-performing assets--basically those which are not yielding interest nor repaying loans. As the number of borrowers who cannot service their loans increases--banks’ core capitalization—or the amount banks maintain as reserve as per the law— is hit. As per the agency, ICICI's core capitalisation is at 12.7%, which is higher than most other Indian banks. But within the current operating environment, that poses only a moderate buffer against risks. “Axis's core capital ratio is unlikely to meet the threshold for higher-rated banks even if the bank proceeds with the conversion of $400 million of warrants into equity and fresh equity issuance in the near term,” the agency said. Eco growth This state of affairs of the banking sector will continue for the next one or two years. This is in spite of the fact that the agency expects high economic growth in the country, with improved business prospects. However, banks should recover from their damaged balance sheets before they take advantage of any growth in the system. “Banks in India - which remain the biggest credit intermediaries in the country - are positioned to take advantage of this opportunity, provided their damaged balance sheets recover sustainably with the infusion of fresh equity that encourage them to support credit growth in a meaningful way,” Fitch said. Two big private banks get downgraded-- because the Indian government has enough problems at its own banks

<ul><li>All of SBI’s windfall from SBI Life stake sale went into provisioning for bad loans.</li><li>ICICI Bank stock could be re-rated based on its exposure to latest list of troubled firms.</li><li>HDFC Bank’s retail loan quality has not deteriorated but slow pick up in auto loans might affect it in the future.</li><li>Kotak Mahindra Bank is already affected by slow uptake in loans and its credit costs are also growing.</li></ul>There has been a lot of fear around the health of Indian banks, including the large ones, for a while now⁠— largely due to rising bad loans. However, if you look at some of the top banks in the country⁠— like the State Bank of India (SBI), ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Yes Bank⁠— one would find that the factors that affect the earnings are largely different. Yes Bank’s gross non-performing assets or basically loans where recovery is tough stands at ₹17,134 crore which is more than four times what it was in the same quarter last year-- ₹3,866 crore. And it might have <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/finance/yes-bank-stock-falls-by-15-as-investors-worry-over-hdil-dhfl-exposure-119093001180_1.html">more to come </a>because of its extensive exposure to troubled shadow banks like Housing Development Infrastructure (HDIL) and Deewan Housing Finance (DHFL). Not just that, it also has exposure to Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group and Essel Group as well. In this regard, SBI has more to worry about the crisis in the country’s shadow banks, whereas Kotak and HDFC Bank are largely untouched by the same crisis because they lend more to individuals than corporates, while ICICI Bank too has managed to curb its exposure to troubled sectors like telecom and real estate financiers. The same cannot be said for Yes Bank, whose bad loans have been consistently rising over the last one year.

 The SBI story The fortunes of India’s largest bank State Bank India depends on the survival of the shadow banks that it has lent to. After the IL&amp;FS debacle last year, a lot more are in the line and it has an exposure to Dewan Housing Finance which has not yet sunk but on thin ice. Yet this quarter has been better than expected for SBI as its profits went up three times over from the same quarter last year. But that is not the best news it has received this quarter. Its slippages which is basically the extent of loans that have turned bad---have come down by half. Going ahead, its health will depend on how it holds onto this number and DHFL’s survival is extremely important. But the bank is confident that its slippages will not go down below 2%. For a bank with a vast loan book, it is as high as ₹8,000 crore. Basically, it’s a good enough quarter for SBI if its loans worth this ₹8,000 crore turn bad, and not more! ICICI Bank has corrected its course over time The country’s largest private bank ICICI Bank too has an asset quality problem and its extent of slippage is lower too. Its slippages came at ₹2,480 crore for the quarter -- at around 1.7% of its total loans. The improving asset quality has helped the stock price which has gained 17.2% in the last six months. “Importantly, it displays no large stress exposure to some downgraded groups or emerging stress groups, while also has lower exposure to telecom, housing finance companies, non-banking financial companies and builders,” said a report by Prabhudas Liladher. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[

 As much as ₹1,260 crore worth loans recovered to get off the ‘dud’ category and that is much better news. When banks have fewer bad loans on their books, they have to keep less amount aside -- as per regulations. It means they will have more amount at their disposal to lend, which also doubles as growth money in case of banks. This will help the bank compete with other private banks on a war path of growth like Kotak Mahindra and HDFC Bank which are exhibiting double digit growth. Individual borrowers in India are better in repaying loans than companies⁠— and that helps HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra. While HDFC’s loan growth is at 15% from last year, in spite of the fact that this bank which lends to individuals instead of corporates is seeing lack of interest for two good segments -- auto and housing. The loan book of Kotak Mahindra which has a mix of retail and corporate clients grew by 20%. But these banks will see the effect of slowdown that is lulling the economy. “Slower-than-expected loan growth will likely delay the leveraging up process and higher than expected slippages and credit costs given weaker macros. Weakness in capital markets would impact the flow businesses,” said Nomura in a report on Kotak Mahindra Bank. While other banks are offering lower rates for deposits, an aggressive Kotak Bank is offering rates as high as 8% to ensure it has enough money to lend to its borrowers. But that has also meant that it has a narrower profit margin.
