Banking jobs: HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and more are hiring across the country for various roles

In the ongoing <keyword id="6387088" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="campus-placement" source="Orion">campus placement</keyword> season in the <keyword id="55119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (<keyword id="108320" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-kanpur" source="Orion">IIT Kanpur</keyword>), a total of 49 offers above ₹1 crore were received in the first eight days. "In the first eight days, the institute received 47 international offers. This is a big jump of 150 per cent over last year when 19 international offers were received. The highest packages so far are USD 274,250 for international and ₹1.2 crore for domestic," an official statement said. The top recruiters are Axtria, EXL, Graviton, Goldman Sachs, <keyword id="6653" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="icici-bank" source="Orion">ICICI Bank</keyword>, Intel, Microsoft, OLA, Rubrik, Samsung, Quadeye, Uber, Tiger Analytics, among others. IIT Kanpur gets 49 offers above ₹1 crore

Well, the new CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank Ashok Vaswani thinks that a lot more technology can be deployed in banks. As the CEO of Barclays Bank UK, Vaswani knows how the lives of consumers can transform with digitisation. He is also cognisant of the fact that a bank does not only cater to millennials or GenZ population. At Barclays, he had a team of tech experts to help consumers who were even in their 1990s such that they could learn not just digital banking but even chat with grandkids on Skype or Zoom. That is how the new CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank thinks, given that his head and heart are in the right place. At a time when banks are struggling to keep consumers happy while maintaining high profit margins, Vaswani could well be the man who can plug the gaps. And, if there’s something he can talk about for hours, it is the technological transformation of financial services. Not only is he cognisant of the ease that digital banking brings, but also the risk that comes along with it. This generational shift at India’s fourth largest private bank in India clearly wants to up its game in the years to come by leveraging technology to transform not only its operations but also create new and better services for its customers. Imagine an AI Bot that actually tells consumers every month on how spending on eating out is much more than feasible or that average monthly savings are not good enough when you retire. Yes, Vaswani believes that is the next stage of banking as it can open up different ecosystems. In an interview a few years ago at the University of West England, Bristol, he said: “I would submit that a lot more digitisation can happen. Why would I not be able to tell you, you are earning so much, you are spending this much and you should be saving. Can you imagine, you spent so much money on Uber and that you should be careful?” There are so many aspects of digital transformation that limits are frankly only set in the mind. As the CEO of Barclays UK, he has not just built a lot of products for consumers but even their confidence in the bank and the banking system. It is a refreshing change to hear a CEO talk about confidence in the company and not just on margins. Vaswani has a proven track record spanning three and a half decades across the world’s leading banks. He was initially at Citigroup and more recently, at Barclays, where he built and grew the business to a scale. He brings with him significant executional experience with a high degree of compliance and industrial strength across corporate and consumer businesses. Vaswani was Chief Executive Officer of Barclays Bank, UK and subsequently CEO of their global consumer, private, corporate and payments businesses and Member of the group executive committee. Earlier, he was CEO Citigroup Asia Pacific and Member of the Citigroup Global Operating Management Committees. He also built and ran various country and regional businesses across geographies. What makes him interesting is that he has not only run global banks but has even been president of Pagaya Technologies, a US-Israeli AI fintech company. This kind of exposure makes him a much better candidate than any insider at Kotak Mahindra Bank. At last count, there were three top contenders for the job, but Uday Kotak has roped in an outsider given the extent of the transformation that the bank will need to undertake to remain relevant in the face of competition from other fintechs. Ashok is married to Veena and their daughter is working in the United States of America. It is interesting that Uday Kotak, first generation founder and promoter of Kotak Mahindra Bank, has brought in an outsider to run the bank. Organisations typically are wary of bringing in outsiders at top jobs mostly because of the friction that results from such hiring due to cultural fitment and acceptance of a known candidate. It is easier for the rank and file to accept an insider rather than an outsider but Uday Kotak has chosen to take the risky route. While in some unfortunate cases like Infosys, where Vishal Sikka did not fare too well when promoters stepped away in 2014, the experiment of outsiders has been rather successful at the Tata Group. When Ratan Tata took over the reins at the Tata Group, he brought in Kishor Chaukar who came from ICICI Securities to head Tata Industries. Ravi Kant came in from Philips India in 1999, and headed commercial vehicles for Tata Motors before becoming MD in 2005. In 1998, the then vice-chairman of Hindustan Lever (now known as Hindustan Unilever), moved to Tata Sons as executive director. Typically, Indian corporations bring in overseas talent when they believe that the requisite skills are not available in India. But given that India’s private banking sector has grown and flourished under the stewardship of homegrown talent, this shift is an interesting move by Uday Kotak, who clearly sees merit in Vaswani’s experience outside of India. No wonder Uday Kotak, Founder and Director, Kotak Mahindra Bank said: “I am proud that we bring a ‘Global Indian’ home to build Kotak and India of tomorrow.” Interestingly, Ashok Vaswani is a Bachelor of Commerce, Economics and Accountancy, from the Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics (Bombay University), CA from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, CS from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India and Executive Education from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Uday Kotak too is alumnus of Sydenham College and has a postgraduate degree in management studies in 1982 from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.

The CEO who believes that there’s a lot more to digitise at banks

<ul><li>NASSCOM and Bank of America are at odds about the job cuts set to occur across the Indian IT industry in the ongoing fiscal year.</li><li>Bank of America asserts that up to three million people could find themselves unemployed as a result of automation while NASSCOM asserts that only 1.4 million are employed in the ‘low skill’ segment to begin with.</li><li>Companies in the Indian IT sector may continue to be ‘net hirers’ in FY22, but that doesn’t mean that people won’t be losing their jobs to software programs that can perform day-to-day tasks better than humans. </li></ul>India’s leading information technology (IT) lobby, NASSCOM, and analysts at Bank of America are sparring over how many employees in the sector are set to lose their jobs this year. Whether it's half a million or three million, ‘low skilled’ <keyword id="57650" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-jobs">IT jobs</keyword> are under threat of automation — and even the executives recognise this. Bank of America has estimated that Tata Consultancy Services (<keyword id="6357150" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs">TCS</keyword>), <keyword id="6354512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>, <keyword id="141968" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HCL-Tech">HCL Tech</keyword>, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Cognizant and others will see a 30% reduction in ‘low-skilled’ jobs globally by 2022 because of robot process automation (RPA). The global financial services company gauged that around 9 million people are employed in such roles in India, which means 3 million — one third of the total — will find themselves unemployed by the end of the year. NASSCOM has hit back saying that only 1.5 million people are employed in low-skilled and BPO roles, not 9 million. Which means, even if there are to be job losses, at the same rate as Bank of America is predicting, they may only amount to around half a million. Prior to his appointment as the head of the life insurance business, Bakhshi held a variety of roles at ICICI’s other businesses. He was the Deputy Managing Director and head of retail operations at ICICI Bank between 2009 and 2010 and CEO of the bank’s non-life insurance business - ICICI Lombard General Insurance - between 2007 and 2009. Before joining ICICI Lombard in 2002, he looked after corporate lending operations at ICICI Bank’s Northern and Eastern divisions. He has an engineering background Bakshi received a mechanical engineering degree from Chandigarh’s Punjab Engineering College before going on to complete a masters degree in Management from Xavier Labour Relations Institute in Jamshedpur. His first job was for ORG Systems, a computer manufacturer, where he started working in 1983. Investors seem to be happy with his appointment As a company veteran who knows the ins and outs of ICICI’s business, investors seem confident about Bakhshi’s promotion. ICICI Bank’s share price on the NSE has risen nearly 4% since the announcement. Bakshi has his work cut out for him in the near term. He needs to rebuild ICICI’s image and improve corporate governance while weathering the fallout of the Videocon case. Technology is transforming banking at an unprecedented pace. It’s impacting every part of the business including customer expectations, products, processes, and people. We believe, in 2017 disruption of the Indian banking industry will be led by five technologies. Following the success of the Jan Dhan program, the Government has asked banks to step it up by enrolling all customers in mobile banking by 31st March. While it may actually take much longer than that, there is little doubt that mobility will continue to be at the forefront of a changing banking landscape. Next, open banking, riding on initiatives such as Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="6358921" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPI">UPI</keyword>), will make it extremely simple for customers to engage with providers of the best, most contextual experience, regardless of where they have their bank accounts. With a number of data centers springing up in the country, including the ones by leading global providers, Indian banks now have more avenues to run their systems from the cloud. If banking is to become a platform business, such as Uber or Airbnb, involving open collaboration with an ecosystem of providers, there is no option but to run it on the cloud. The fourth technology to disrupt banking is clearly Artificial Intelligence. Early signs of AI are visible in <keyword id="6653" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword>, which has used Robotic Process Automation on 200 processes or more, and in HDFC Bank, which has deployed a robot in its branch. But this is just the beginning. Banks will follow with AI investments across functions spanning the front, middle and back office. Last but not least is blockchain, where once again, ICICI Bank has taken the lead by setting up a pilot network with Emirates NBD for trade finance and remittance transactions. Blockchain has also attracted the attention of the regulators; <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/rbi-arm-tests-tech-behind-bitcoin/articleshow/56575335.cms">recently</a> RBI’s research arm, IDRBT, completed an end-to-end test on blockchain in a trade application that had multiple financial institutions, banks, clearing houses, and regulators involved. These technologies will not just change things at the front end; they will transform business models. And that will obviously create an impact on the workforce as well. For instance, just one technology – AI– could automate several processes and help banks achieve scale without adding new resources. <a href="https://www.icicibank.com/aboutus/article.page?identifier=news-icici-bank-introduces-software-robotics-to-power-banking-operations-20160809103646464">ICICI Bank</a> strongly believes that automation will enable their employees to focus on more value-added services while having better work-life balance. Our view is that while new digital technologies will automate a number of routine, repetitive jobs, they will also create a sizeable demand for new skills such as experience design, data scientists, among others. The point to note is that unlike static jobs of the past, these roles will constantly shift and change; some will go away in a few years and others will be added. This will pose a tricky workforce management challenge for Indian banks, who until now have trained people for specialized positions and lifelong careers. Going forward, they will have to nurture a versatile and flexible workforce that can slip in and out of different roles, not once, but several times in a career. An important part of that is to have employees who can work at the intersection of banking, technology, and value – people with reasonable knowledge of both the business and technology domains – given that the lines between various functions within an organization are rapidly blurring. A good example is an initiative by <keyword id="6355975" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> called <a href="http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/business-wire/axis-bank-launches-axis-academies-twin-tracking-capabilities-for-the-future/article9461215.ece">Academies</a>, to build the proficiency of its workforce partnering with institutions such as INSEAD, CRISIL, INSOFE. The bank is enabling its employees to become future ready as digital bankers, while selecting an area of specialization. The bank calls it “Twin-Tracking”. Rotation policies will assume great significance in this scenario. Banks must shift personnel around to challenge them to adapt to new roles, acquire new capabilities, and be more creative in whatever they do. ICICI Bank credits its innovativeness to a policy that says any project must go live in 90 days. The Bank says that the only way it can meet such a demanding target is by assigning each project to a specially assembled cross-functional team, which works exclusively on it for that period. The future belongs to banks that are “truly digital”. Among other things, such banks are highly empathetic to customers. If a bank has to be empathetic as a whole, all its people, and not just customer-facing staff, need to walk the talk. For that, all p<a name="_GoBack"></a>ersonnel must be sensitized to customer needs, and trained to think “customer first” regardless of whether they serve in the front or back office. A good example here is DBS Bank, <a href="http://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/digital-mckinsey/our-insights/the-digital-reinvention-of-an-asian-bank">which won the Digital Bank Award</a> from Euromoney recently. The bank has a big focus on getting their company technology literate with a slew of initiatives for enabling their employees, changing the culture of their organization and embracing digital more pervasively. Can our banks turn these changes around overnight? Clearly not. People-related change is the hardest kind; hence banks need to approach it thoughtfully. It will also take them several years to reskill the workforce at so many levels. In the short-term, to make the most of opportunities which will not wait, banks can look at partnering with fintech companies and other startups to partly bridge their skill gaps. In the long-term, however, they would have to do it the hard way by establishing a culture of lifelong learning.
