 The <keyword id="23050" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sweden">Sweden</keyword> India Nobel Memorial Week 2016 has a string of events such as seminars and board discussions among well known Indian and Swedish chiefs from government and business and in addition the scholarly world, to rivalries for understudy and social exhibitions.

India and Sweden do share common basic values and interests, and at the same time, we see a great potential to take inspiration from each other and expand our cooperation across a range of sectors. India is a great example of unity in diversity and Sweden collaborates with India under the India's "Smart Cities" initiative. Many Swedish companies specializing in the sustainable urban development sector have been working in India for many years." 
 The Sweden India Nobel Memorial Week is held in memory of Swedish innovator and giver <keyword id="233417" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alfred-Nobel">Alfred Nobel</keyword> to observe Indian Nobel laureates and is sorted out in participation with leading Swedish organizations in India. The topic for the tenth version of the Week is Swedish commitments - "Sweden Makes in India", including sustainability and innovation. Sweden is showing innovations by Swedish companies in line with ‘Make in India’ initiative

Mumbai, Dec 8 () A senior Swedish minister has opined that the US finally quitting the Paris Climate Accord throws up a big opportunity for Stockholm and New Delhi to set an example for the rest of the world on the need for collaborative efforts to meet the challenges of climate change. 
Swedish minister for business, industry and innovation Ibrahim Baylan believes that such a collaboration between the two nations is very possible because of the many shared values and the democratic framework both the countries operate in. This can help fill the void created by the US formally withdrawing from the pact to a large extent, he feels. 
"With the US withdrawing from the Paris Agreement and now that we are daily getting reports on how the climate is changing and the number of people migrating, it is necessary that India and Swedan collaborate and set a good example globally for transitioning to sustainable growth," Baylan told in an interaction during his visit to the city mid last week as part of the royal entourage.
It can be recalled that last month, the US had formally announced its decision to leave the Paris Climate Accord singer by the past president Barack Obama. The Donald Trump administration also formally submitted the relevant notification to the United Nations.
Trump had stated that the decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement was taken because of the "unfair economic burden it imposed on American workers, businesses, and taxpayers".
Baylan notes that there are nearly 100 million refugees globally and if steps are not taken right now , this number will go up to one billion, which is a cause of concern.
"If so many people start to move from their lands, it will create conflicts at a scale we haven't seen before," the minister warned. 
 The minister also said at a time when there are discussions about the transition from pollution and climate change issues which will hit economic growth, it is necessary that India and Sweden take urgent initiatives in the right direction.
"We still have the debate globally if we should do (the transition) or not. Those who are against the transition are arguing that it will lead to job cuts and growth slowdown. But I think, together we could make the transition and at the same time develop the economy and create new jobs," Baylan said.
He further said some of the challenges faced by India are different but the intent and the direction in which the federal government functions is same as Sweden, which is working for the benefit of their citizens.
"Some ways we have a trade off here, but I think we still have opportunities and possibilities to change our way and that's how innovation can power change and development.

India, Sweden can collaborate on efforts to mitigate climate change, says minister

New Delhi, Dec 3 () The scale of Modi government's flagship Ayushman Bharat has attracted Swedish pharmaceutical industry which is exploring to use data from the health scheme for the development of better medicines here, Swedish Minister Ibrahim Baylan said Tuesday.
Underlining pharmaceuticals as one of areas of co-operation between the two countries, the minister for business, industry and innovation said Swedish pharmaceutical companies have "innovations that hold huge potential" but what India has and the nordic country does not is masses.
"Data collected will be so important. The new ambition that Indian government has for additionally 500 million people getting health care and Swedish know how, if that can be linked and utilised in a way that it will also (help) develop new medicines...it has huge potential," Baylan said.
He is accompanying Swedish Royal Couple King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia on their five-day state visit to India.
Ayushman Bharat is India's national health protection scheme, which will cover over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families.
The minister lauded tax reforms initiated by India during last few years, saying such measures are huge steps for a country which is so big and diverse.
"I am hugely impressed that the government has managed to do things that they have been doing because it is a federal state that we are not. A huge state. And seeing that a couple of years ago when they made tax similar in all the states and now with moves on the corporate tax, I think they have great ambitions there. It is a huge task because you have very autonomous states, but seeing that direction in itself is the right direction," he said.
Baylan said looking at India makes one, as a representative of a small country, very humble in one's conscience.
The minister said Sweden can offer its expertise in sustainable development and circular economy.
Swedish companies like Ikea have already demonstrated that circular economy is not only possible but also good for the environment.
Rather than a quest for "virgin resources", he said, circular economy aims at reusing resources.
"Sweden has been working for a long time trying to substitute fossil energy and going to more sustainable energy. Waste has been our way of doing it. This is a huge problem all over the world and also in India. It could be an area of cooperation," he said. ABS ABS ABH

Swedish firms interested in Ayushman Bharat data to develop new medicines in India

New Delhi, Feb 19 () Union Minister Nitin Gadkari who is representing India in a global road safety event in Sweden will hold bilateral dialogue with his Swedish counterpart for infrastructure Tomas Eneroth, the government said on Wednesday. The Road Transport and Highways Minister is in Sweden to represent India at the "3rd High Level Global Conference on Road Safety for Achieving Global Goals 2030" being held in Stockholm from February 19-20. During his stay in Stockholm, Gadkari will have bilateral dialogue with his Swedish counterpart for infrastructure Tomas Eneroth, Minister for Foreign Trade Anna Hallberg, Minister for Business, Industry &amp; Innovation Ibrahim Baylan and also with the British Minister for Road Safety Baroness Vere. Gadkari will also hold talks with the World Bank Vice President (South Asia) Hart Schafer, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said. Also on Gadkari's itinerary will be a Sweden-India Transportation Safety and Innovation Partnership meeting to be attended by a number of CEOs. Swedish and Indian businesses are likely to exchange several MOUs on this occasions. Gadkari on Wednesday visited the Swedish Logistics Automotive manufacturer 'Volvo' in Gothenburg. The Minister was accompanied by Ambassador of Sweden in India Klas Molin. Volvo is one of the world's largest manufacturers of heavy-duty trucks, construction equipment, buses and heavy-duty diesel engines as well as a leading supplier of marine and industrial engines. The objective of the two-day conference is to bring road safety on the global agenda and renew the world community's commitment to safer roads. New Delhi, Feb 17 () Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will represent India at a two-day global conference on road safety in Stockholm on February 18 and 19. The objective of the conference is to bring road safety on the global agenda and renew the world community's commitment to safer roads, the highways and road ministry said in a statement. "Road Transport &amp; Highways and MSMEs Minister Nitin Gadkari reached Stockholm today to represent India at the '3rd High Level Global Conference on Road Safety for Achieving Global Goals 2030'," the statement said. Leaders from participating countries will draw up a road map for reaching the goal of reducing road crashes by 2030 set under the 'UN Decade of Action'. The conference, a follow up of the 2nd High Level Global Conference on "Traffic Safety-Time of Results" in 2015 in Brazil, is being organised in collaboration with the World Bank, World Health Organisation (WHO) and other agencies. A significant highlight of the conference will be sharing of the expertise by the nations which have gained experience in road safety management with those who are behind in the learning curve, the statement said. Emphasis will also be on adopting best practices that are emerging in different parts of the world. It said developing countries, particularly in the South Asian and the South East Asian region, including India, are expected to focus on certain specific issues and challenges facing them on account of a significant number of their motorised vehicles consisting of two-wheelers. India alone accounts for about 5 lakh road accidents every day in which 1.5 lakh people die. India has signed the Brasilia Declaration in 2015, which committed the world community to reducing the number of deaths in road accidents.
